WAVELL WHIRLAWAYS Well what a great State Convention. The Venues were chosen well and suited each Session of dancing. A Big thank you to Sid Leighton and Lynette MacPherson for putting their lives on hold for nearly two years to put this Convention together. Everything was thought of even though the gremlins crept in occasionally. Even though I was not able to dance as much as I would have liked I defy anybody to say they did not have a good time dancing and catching up with old friends in dancing and making some new friend as well. I know that our new dancers from Taigum Square Dance Club enjoyed their first Convention and are looking ahead to the next Convention at Cleveland when they will be able to do more dancing, even though they gave the Mainstream dancing a go to sometimes much hilarity. A big, big, thank you again to Sid and Lynette and all the helpers from three clubs who did in any way help with decorating halls, barbecuing many dozens of sausages, serving the same, keeping the cold water flowing, and the urns hot for tea and coffee, supper on two nights and helping with the evening meal on Sunday. A lot of tired people at the end of the weekend but a good tired knowing they had done their best. June Lambert Please have all Bugle Advertisements in prior to 25th of each Month Thank You. 2

CHRISTMAS IS COMING. COME TO THE PARTY CARINA CAROUSELS INVITE YOU TO THE SENIORS HALL AT 1 EDMOND STREET.CARINA. FROM 1PM THURSDAY 5 TH DECEMBER. A PLATE FOR AFTERNOON TEA WILL BE APPRECIATED. Suncoasters It's almost as though this is the year of the cruise ships for the Suncoasters. As well as Nev and Bev McLachlan working on the popular Cruisin Country ship a number of our members have been sailing the high seas, sometimes with unintended landfalls, leading to a drop in numbers at many of our dances. While Nev and Bev were away, Helen and Barry Ball helped out by continuing the popular round dance lessons. Like our last intake of square dancers the new round dancers were attracted by the large sign outside the hall. Since Dixon Road was opened on to the Sunshine Motorway the through vehicle traffic has increased significantly and this sign seems to be the most effective way of advertising our Club. Lyn Please have all Bugle Advertisements in prior to 25th of each Month Thank You. 5

THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL CONVENTION I would like to say a very big thank-you to Lynette Macpherson & Sid Leighton for convening the best State Convention that I have ever been to. Having danced for more than 30 years in various parts of the country, I can honestly say that I have never been to anything like it. They thought of everything. The food was fantastic and the venues were amazing. I heard many people say that they were having a really good time during the weekend and when several callers stated that "Lyn & Sid have put the fun back in Square dancing" many, many dancers agreed. Three cheers for the dynamic duo. The atmosphere was electric on Saturday night with the different music and great calling and incredible costumes. I had the pleasure of visiting the Basic Hall on Friday night and could not believe the atmosphere in there either, it was rocking. All ages had a smile on their face and even the line dancing was popular. From the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank-you to you both for your efforts. Events like this just don't happen without a lot of effort and that showed in the organisation of the Convention. This dance was put together by skilled, caring people and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to attend. Regards Carol Roberts Qld Dancer Please have all Bugle Advertisements in prior to 25th of each Month Thank You. 6

September Report Gumdale Grandsliders Square Dance Club Inc. Caller: Alan Evans Of course, the big event in September, was the Queensland State Convention. With some trepidation, we south siders crossed over the river to the celebration at Ferny Hills. We were rewarded for our effort. The whole event was a triumph of organisation and simple good fun. Quite a number of Grandsliders were among the crowds at the two big dances on Friday and Saturday nights, including some of our newer dancers. We have several new regulars who are coming along well, and enjoying themselves. The final sessions and dinner were also well attended. Only one mishap- Margaret and Ken s car objected to being so far out of its comfort zone, and as we neared the venue, ominous wisps of steam appeared from the engine. RACQ angels took over and we all went on to have a great night. We welcomed the return of our friend Pat, from Tudor squares in Oxford, England. Pat dances with us each year while visiting her family in Victoria Point. We look forward to her return next year. Our next party dances are Halloween and Melbourne Cup day- everyone is invited. Sadly we will be farewelling Mie and Kei at the Halloween dance, as they are returning to live in Japan. They will be very much missed. Thanks to all our dancers and our wonderful Caller, Alan. 8 Society News - for all Dancers and Club Officers Here is a summary of the main points discussed at the Society Management Committee Meeting & General Meeting held on, 1 October, Significant dances to be held next year are: The Society AGM Dance, March 29, - Gala Dance with Sunshine State Round Up, May24, - Qld State Convention September and the Society Christmas Dance (hosted by Bundaberg Clubs) November 22. For the State convention, the committee is asking for Clubs or other groups to manage various aspects of the Convention on the weekend. Please see the State Convention notice on another page. The clubs from Bundaberg offered to host the 2014 Society Christmas Party. Their offer was gratefully received. More details will follow later. The Society Executive is keen to hear from clubs or individuals who want to conduct beginners classes next year. There are some funds available and clubs are asked to detail their proposals and put them to the committee. A new Membership form has been produced. It may be filled out on line before printing and signing it. There are a few changes have been made so that it conforms to the Society's constitution and regulations. Please see that form also in this edition of the Bugle. It will probably be available on the web site soon. Some dancers have asked questions about the extent of cover under the Society's Accident Insurance scheme. I have included a document which describes the cover also in this Bugle. Also at the meeting held last Tuesday, the Society agreed that the price structure of club membership needed to be changed to meet costs incurred and that clubs needed to apply/re-apply for affiliated membership of the Society. New affiliation forms will be sent to clubs in the near future. Please ensure that all clubs wishing to be part of the Society respond ASAP to the Society Secretary. David Pearce Publicity Officer DISCLAIMER The opinions expressed in the Banana Benders Bugle are those of individual contributors and may not necessarily agree with the opinions of the editors or the Qld Society or Qld Clubs, nor are we responsible for any goods advertised for sale. 11 Square Dancing Society of Qld. Inc AGM Dance Keep the date clear:- Saturday - March All dancers and Callers/Cuers are invited to enjoy the fun of a combined dance and to inject your ideas to improve your Square Dance Society We have booked a hall at Salisbury. More information in the coming editions of "The Bugle" Hosted by Rambling Eights Square Dance Club Rambling Eights Caller David Pearce With our theme night for October being "masquerade" we really didn't want it to be the hottest night of the year so far. But it was! 38 o was not a good temperature to be dancing behind a mask. Congratulations to those who kept theirs on for the duration, especially Karen who won a prize for her orange taffeta and black lace creation which perfectly matched her dance outfit. The other winner who was brave enough to wear lots of colour, glitter and feathers was a man who will not be named, in case he is embarrassed by my description of his mask. Dancers who went to the state convention thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It can be hard to find something new and enjoyable for those who have been dancing for many years, and also keep it interesting. Dancing with the new dancers, doing basics and mainstream, amazingly, it was just wonderful - the enthusiasm they brought to the floor. What a party atmosphere. It reminded me of my first convention ever, the air was electric. We are all looking forward to our club social Christmas outing. Dinner followed by a comedic rendition of The 39 Steps on November 9th. If you have not booked already, sorry it's too late - all seats are filled and meals ordered. In the past, Rambling Eights has held one or two "Friends Nights" late in the year with the idea that people who show interest in starting can get a feel for it by joining in a couple of brackets. We ask them to give us their contact details, so we can encourage them to join when we feel we are ready to take more dancers. We will be holding one of these nights on November 15th. Dancers from other clubs can also bring friends with no obligation to bring them back to Rambling Eights if they wish to take up this great activity. Our new hall has a non-slip floor. This means that non-slip shoes can be hard work on those calf muscles if you are used to polished floor boards. Be prepared to lift your feet a little more if you are not wearing dance quality shoes. We look forward to greeting our many friends at the new venue for our club. Watch this space for further news on our facilities. Happy dancing to all our dancing friends from Rambling Eights Dancers Please have all Bugle Advertisements in prior to 25th of each Month Thank You. 11

Noel and Merle Mckenzie PINE RIVERS SENIOR CITIZENS We are certainly heading to the end of another year quickly. Isn't is surprising how fast the second half of the year goes. What a great Convention we had at Ferny Hills and many thanks to the host clubs - Wavell Whirlaways Sunshine Squares and Taigum Twirlers and in particular the Co-Convenors Lynette MacPherson and Sid Leighton. Looking at the Calendar of Events, there is still plenty of dancing before we call it an end of our dancing year, including our own and very last 5th Saturday dance on 30th November. We will be holding our usual Melbourne Cup fun afternoon on 5th November and our last club dance for 2013 will be on 3rd December. After a much welcomed rest, we will recommence dancing on Tuesday 28th January 2014 at 1p.m. On behalf of Margaret, myself and all our dancers at Pine Rivers we would like to wish all our fellow dancers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. We recently held a car observation run, all participants arrived safely and all managed to arrive at the destination without getting lost. The run started from Burpengary Park and after travelling through many suburbs and looking out for key clues finished at North Pine Dam where we all enjoyed a bar-b-q or picnic lunch. Quite a few of our dancers attended the State Convention at Ferny Hills and a fabulous time was had by all. As the year draws to a close we are getting close to our graduation night. We started off the year with 16 new dancers and we have 13 graduating including 4 children, we are so proud of them all. Our local Minimbah School has three squares of children learning to square dance, our club sponsors these children with the hope they will be future members of our club thus advancing the enjoyment of square dancing for all ages. These children are taught in their lunch hour by our own Ken McCulloch who is affectionately known to them as Mr Mac. Our last dance for the year will be our Christmas Dance on 3 rd December and we hope to see lots of visitors in their Christmas attire.
