2 RAMBLING EIGHTS Caller David Pearce With the colder weather some club members have been absent for various reasons, but with Noel stepping in while David is away, the gaps have been filled with his loyal supporters. All Rambling Eights dancers greatly appreciate the support from Noel, Merle and their dancers. We have been entertained with the differences in music and style of calling, as well as challenged when the moves were presented in ways other than what we have become used to. It was also wonderful to have a visit from Teagan who was on leave from the RAAF. It is great to know that even the young dancers like to come back for a dance with us when staying with family. David and Faith will be sorry to have missed a rare chance to catch up with this beautiful young lady we have seen grow up in our midst. Our intrepid tourists will be back with us by the time you are reading this, and hopefully relaxed and refreshed from the European summer. Normally to have been away in July would have meant missing the coldest depths of winter, but this year has been out of whack and it looks like August will be much more frosty than July. At least our regular soup for supper night will be a warm welcome for all. We will have a variety of soups on offer, with accompanying bread and fruit. Dancers don t forget to be environmentally friendly and bring your soup bowls and spoons (of course there will be some spares for those caught unawares). As much as we appreciate attendees who dress in square dance style, it also understood that it is better to be comfortable and dress according to the climate, rather than feel obliged to keep up a standard that may inhibit your enjoyment of a night out. Please feel free to dress appropriate to the weather but no one wearing bikinis in summer will be welcome on the dance floor! We have themed dress up nights for those who really want to let their imaginations run riot. Our next is planned for October. Wearers beware! We look forward to meeting up with our friends on the dance floor, either at our club or other dances. Please have all Bugle Advertisements in prior to 25th of each Month Thank You. 2

3 Join Us at Hervey Bay for Awesome Whale Watching and Square Dancing Greetings from Hervey Bay on the Fraser Coast. We are heading into the Whale Watching Season. Already whales have been sighted heading north up the coast. Two days there was a rare event when a pod of twelve Killer Whales or Orcas were in the Sandy Straits between Hervey Bay and Fraser Island. Unfortunately, despite the sustained efforts of the park rangers, three died. However, the rest have now swum off to deeper waters and it is hoped will be safe. We are also making sustained efforts to recruit new members.we recently did a half hour demonstration at the local Expo. We have utilized community radio sessions, personal invitations to friends and have flyers everywhere. The Come n Try on 13 th of July was led by Gary Petersen with a focus on socialising, as well as introducing square dancing. We had a wonderful morning with Gary, great atmosphere and more than 3 squares. As a result of the Bring-a-Friend session we started a new learners class on Wed. 17 th July with 2 new recruits, with at least 2 more expected next week. (Thanks to the Rugby Finals on the 17 th!) We are trying out a new format for our Club. Learners will be involved from 7-10pm with Learners and Mainstream brackets interwoven throughout the night. Again we will focus on socialising as well as learning square dancing moves. In the evening of July 13 th Gary called a Mainstream Dance with the theme Aussie Aussie. The Hall looked fantastic with lots of flags, Aussie Aussie beach towels and plenty of Green & Gold. Thanks goes to our visitors who helped to make it another successful night. In the PLUS session Gary made sure most of us got to dance by using 6 couple formations. Wow! Lots of noise from the brains running at full power, an excellent challenge with lots of laughs, thanks Gary. Our next function will be a first for Hervey Bay. On the 10 th & 11 th of August the Quarterly QCA meeting and training session will be hosted at Dan Dinna House, 459 Boat Harbour Drive, Torquay. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday 10.30am, followed by a PLUS session from pm and an evening dance from pm. The Caller Training Session is held on Sunday pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to dance to a good variety of great callers. An extra influx in numbers is bound to enthuse those callers and will definitely increase the vitality in the hall, so do come and join us. On the 10 th of August or at any time when you are this way, you re always welcome. Whilst you are here you could do some Whale Watching. Seeing the Hump-backed whales is one of the most awesome experiences and just slightly better than dancing at our Club. Kind regards from the members of the Hervey Bay Square Dancers Club. GUMDALE GRANDSLIDERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB INC. CALLER: ALAN EVANS Tuesdays mornings continue to attract three to four squares with one or two plus squares in the afternoon. Our mainstream learners are coming along well and attend regularly. The State of Origin night saw only one square of loyal die-hard dancers. Our numbers may have been fewer but we had great fun. On Saturday the 20 th July, a dozen dancers from Gumdale Grandsliders travelled down to Burleigh Heads, where Alan also calls, to celebrate their 25 th birthday. Another great night. 6 RE CANE COUNTRY SQUARES The mid year social event this year was a Winter Warmer Dinner. Members provided some delicious hot food and sweets before dancing commenced. Our learners are doing well and enjoying their dancing with us. Please note that due to our usual venue at the Norville Hall, Maynard Street, Bundaberg being demolished, we will dance at the Rum City Silver Band Hall, Targo Street, opposite Dan Murphys, as from 30th August We are planning a Farewell to the Hall Night on 23 rd August for our last night there. 7 The Rocky Twirlers Square Dancing, Rockhampton Qld Caller Michael Mills Rocky twirlers held their 16 th Birthday dance Sweet 16 on the weekend of the 13,14&15 th July. Everyone had a great time, we had three squares and some spares. We danced to some great duets with Michael and our guest caller Kay Walker. We enjoyed the company of Kay's partner Aaron Hoppe and guests from Adelaide Eddie and Rosalie. After we had danced the night away we all enjoyed a delicious supper and a beautiful Birthday cake made by Rachelle Mills. Following the Sunday morning dance the club had a barbecue lunch before everyone headed home. The Saturday night held a special presentation for our long standing member Mavis Marshall as she was presented with a life membership to The Rocky Twirlers. Mavis was presented with a plaque with many thanks for her assistance with kitchen duties, decorating the hall and helping with learner dancers, Mavis has always been there to help. Our club nights are going well, we have 1 to 2 squares doing mainstream, plus and A1,this week we have had visitors form Adelaide and Brisbane. Friday night learners are progressing well, some are ready to step up to full Mainstream. We have a number of dancers for rounds and 8 couples are learning Bolero Rhythm in round dancing. Sunday afternoons twice a month we have a learning session for A1 and Plus after this session we all enjoy a social dinner at the local hotel. Happy Dancing from our club to yours. TAIGUM TWIRLERS At the end of June we had our Pot Luck Dinner or Twinterfest as it was affectionately called. The meal started at 5.30pm with savoury s and then progressed to soup, pumpkin or pea and ham. Mains were varied and many with most of us trying a little of everything. Desserts soon followed with some of us trying our hand at making things we hadn t made in quite a little while. Dancing started a little late as everyone was enjoying the meal so much. We would like to once again thank all of our good cooks and helpers for such an enjoyable evening. Our Club members are starting to get excited about attending their first State Convention in just a little over two months. New petticoats and skirts are being purchased or made. Have you got your ticket to join us yet? It s not too late you know and you re in for a real treat. June Lambert Please have all Bugle Advertisements in prior to 25th of each Month Thank You. 7

9 PINE RIVERS SENIOR CITIZENS All our globe-trotting members have returned and our numbers are starting to pick up again. We do still have some members recovering from surgery and/or bouts of flu. We wish them all a speedy recovery. We are enjoying the cooler weather to dance in and are looking to the big dances coming up in the next 2 months. Our next Saturday night dance is on 31st August with the theme "Black and White". At the time of writing this report the date of the Federal Election has not yet been announced. IF THE FEDERAL ELECTION IS SET DOWN FOR 31ST AUGUST - THIS DANCE WILL BE CAN- CELLED If you have any further queries please phone Margaret or Jan WAVELL WHIRLAWAYS Well the State Of Origin may have been won yet again by Queensland but there is still a lot of maroon around the Club. We all are proudly wearing our jackets advertising the 33 rd State Convention that we are jointly hosting with Taigum Twirlers and Sunshine Square and Rounds. On the three Wednesdays of sate of Origin we are asked to wear maroon to club to support our mighty team. Most dancers are happy to do so but we still have a few rebels wearing blue to see the reaction. I think if you have adopted our state as your own then you should support the Maroons. We have been dancing around 4 sets on a weekly basis. Welcome to John and Denise who have been coming on a regular basis. SUNCOASTERS Suncoasters have enjoyed better attendances at workshops and dances this month despite the rain and bad weather. The challenge of combined complex calls which we ve experienced has been a reminder to us of just how much brain activity is involved in square dancing, leading to enjoyable and laughter filled squares, both in Mainstream and Plus. We appreciate the effort that our callers Nev and Gary put into providing us with choreography which gives us so much fun. Tuesday night Basic lessons continue to retain their numbers, and it s obvious that both the learners and the angels are happy. The number of round dance lesson participants has continued to increase, with more people attracted by our outside sign and by word of mouth, and many of these stay and watch square dancing which starts afterwards. 12 STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING Smiles all around as CHUG-A-LUG CLOGGERS take up TUESDAY night residency of the COORPAROO SCHOOL OF ARTS, corner Cavendish Road and Halstead Street, as their new home after having to move, after 19 years of wonderful, happy dancing, from the Red Cross Hall at Greenslopes due to its imminent demolition. To those dancers and visitors who took part in both our End Of An Era Dance at Greenslopes and our very first TUESDAY night of teaching and dancing at Coorparoo, THANK YOU for being a part of these two special nights for CHUGS. Thank you also for the many messages of support and best wishes from dancers all around Australia. P.S. There is plenty of parking close by at Coorparoo, plus public transport and two Supermarkets 5 minutes away. The AUSSIE CLOG weekend was yet again a great time of fellowship, teaching, dancing and fun and games. Our thanks to Olive, who in turn really appreciated the efforts of all those who attended and those who bucked in and assisted with the running of the event. The Get Rhythm Dance Team were pleased to be part of the entertainment at the Seniors Expo at Strathpine, and Cazna Gardens at Sunnybank Hills played host once again to the Team, firm favourites of the residents. Blue Care at Acacia Ridge have issued an invitation to Get Rhythm for an end-of-the-month appearance which they readily accepted. The 50+ Club, located on the lower ground floor of the Brisbane City Hall (Adelaide Street entrance), continues to attract Clogging beginners for the start of the session, followed by more experienced dancers, every Monday morning, often on the basis of bring-a-friend. So easy to get to by public transport, everyone has a very enjoyable morning. Welcome back home to Sally, Amanda, Aaron and Adrian Lim from their trip to Malaysia. Please support DAFFODIL DAY and the Cancer Council of Queensland on Friday 23 rd August. Best Wishes Always, Frances FRANCES LOOK O.A.M.
