2 Sophie Scholl Awards March 10 th, 2014 at Runshaw College Sophie Scholl was a member of the White Rose resistance movement in Nazi Germany. She founded the non-violent movement in 1942 and actively fought against fascism. In early 1943, Sophie and the other leaders of the group were caught by Nazi officials, condemned as traitors and then executed. Sophie was just 21. The Sophie Scholl Awards help keep alive the inspirational example of one individual s resistance to oppression and injustice. A massive well done to Kira Lines, Imogen Turner and Jessica Evans who were all highly commended for their entries which were influenced by the life of Sophie Scholl. All of our entries are displayed on the Head s Commendation board in reception. Imogen came 3 rd out of 80 entries submitted by partner high schools in the area- a great achievement! Entries could either be artwork, poetry, a short film or storyanything creative which celebrated the life of Sophie Scholl. Imogen and Kira submitted poetry and Jessica a piece of artwork (see below). 2

3 English Readathon 2014 It s all about reading in English this week for years 7, 8 and 9. We ve signed up to Readathon, a national charity which raises funds for sick children in the UK. Your daughter should have asked for your permission, brought home a sponsor card and started reading. We are reading in every English lesson this week, for homework and in form time whenever time allows. We would like the girls to raise as much sponsorship money as possible there will be prizes for the most books read and the most money raised. Your daughter can read on her Kindle, I-pad or just bring in a good, old-fashioned, paper book! Reading for pleasure is one of the most important parts of your daughter s academic, social and emotional growth and we have recently invested over 1000 in new books for our library to suit all reading levels. So please encourage your daughter to visit and stock up on some inspiring new books. Miss Thackeray has also applied for funding to transform our library into a 21 st Century reading hub watch this space! We will follow Readathon with a series of reading-related activities such as book swaps and reviews. Please encourage your daughter to read at home by reading with them, discussing your favourite books and recommending books to them. Non-fiction reading is also vital so guide them to parts of your newspaper they may find interesting and discuss current affairs with them. Library Competition Aliya Samli in 7S was delighted to be presented with her own personalised mug as First prize in the recent library competition. Congratulations also to Tiffany Wu in 10Y who came Second and Zulekha Selant in 9S who came Third. All the girls were also given a 1 book voucher, to celebrate World Book Day, last week. These can be cashed-in for a free book at many major retailers or used towards a book of a higher cost. If you would like more information about World Book Day or Readathon, visit these websites: Thank you to everyone who entered the competition. Lots of people had a go- even some members of staff were inspired to enter! Keep a look out in the library for the next competition. Francesca Woolley (Head Librarian) 3

4 Jubilee Logo After much deliberation, a winner has been agreed for the Jubilee logo competition. The level of entry was exceptionally high with many original and imaginative designs, making the job of the judges extremely difficult. Following much debate, Charlotte Daley s logo was chosen just ahead of Erin McLernon in second place and Courtney Naylor in third. To see the full list of Commended logos visit the school s webpage, click on the Jubilee tab and select logo competition. Watch out for Charlotte s design appearing on letters, newsletters and presentations in the near future Geography It s been another busy term in the Geography department with desert survival storyboards, mining disaster articles and volcano stories. There has been some exceptional work with a number of students receiving Heads Commendations and Breakfast invites for their efforts, including Beth Aitchinson, Eleanor Drew and Sarah Marsh who produced some imaginative Whatley Quarry conservation plans; and Heather Needham for a number of excellent Gems related homework. Year 11 geographers are now at the final stages of the GCSE course. Our most recent predictions suggest our current crop of geographers have the potential to be record breakers, in terms of achievement and progress. Over the forthcoming weeks we will be turning our attention increasingly to revision and hope to organise a number of joint events with Hutton Grammar. A big final push is needed come on girls, let s break some records! Where s Earthy? 4

5 German On the 26th of a group of 40 Year 8 girls visited the Languages department at UCLAN for a culture and language enrichment session. The girls also took part in a Chinese calligraphy session. The girls learned some of the basic characters in the Chinese alphabet and were able to write out numbers and their names. There were a variety of activities organised for the students. The girls got to have a go at interpreting in the Worldwise interpreting suite. They tried simultaneous interpretation, this involved someone speaking into a microphone whilst the girls listened with headphones. After each sentence they attempted to translate into English. The next taster session involved the use of Rosetta stone language learning software. The girls chose a wide range of languages, inlcuding Swedish, Korean and Portugese. Finally they used the interactive handsets to take part in a quiz testing their knowledge of languages, countries and geography. The girls really enjoyed the day and all the different aspects of language learning that they were exposed to. Year 9/10 Germany trip A reminder that payment is now due for the final installment of 180. Please pass money to Mr Pye. Year 10 are preparing for their first speaking Controlled Assessment of their GCSEs. They will need to give a minute long presentation and will answer a range of questions for at least 3 more minutes after the presentation. Girls have been working hard in class in preparation and should take advantage of lunch time help sessions to work on their pronunciation and fluency skills. Mr Pye MFL Teacher 5
