1 22 May 2017 P A R E N T S insite EQUESTRIAN NEWS SHOW JUMPING Students from Caedmon College Whitby competed in the National Schools Equestrian Association competition at Northallerton on Sunday 14 May. This was a North of England qualifier for the National competitions to be held later in the year. In the 70cm class Sophie Morrison, Tia Woods and Katarina Harrison-Gaze went clear with Katarina Harrison coming fourth and Sophie Morrison sixth individually; they both qualified for the Championship Plate at Keysoe Equestrian Centre in Bedford. In the 80cm class Tia woods had a double clear, Olivia Morrison and Katarina Harrison-Gaze had only four faults each and Sophie Morrison eight faults. In the 90cm class Katarina Harrison- Gaze had twelve faults, Keira Gallagher clear and Olivia Morrison had four faults. The 90cm Team came second and qualified for Champs at Addington Manor. Keira Gallagher also came fourth individually. In the 1m class Keira was clear and fourth individually and also qualified for the Championship Plate at Keysoe Equestrian Centre in Bedford. Congratulations to all the students who took part. WHITBY AGAINST LITTER Litter is an increasing problem and in particular the amount of disposable plastic entering the food chain should be a concern for us all. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Economic Forum, in a report called the New Plastics Economy, which looks at the amount of plastic that ends up in the sea, predict that there could be more plastic in the sea than fish. Litter also has a negative impact on our own enjoyment of the local area as well as the potential impact that our litter may have on tourism. Walking around Whitby it could seem a daunting task. However, by working together I believe that we can make a real difference. Whitby Against Litter is registered on the Campaign for Rural England s website with the simple aim to reduce the amount of unsightly litter in and around Whitby. I have created a Facebook group (Whitby Against Litter) and I personally plan to collect at least 52 sacks of litter in the next year (excluding those collected working as caretaker for Caedmon College of course). If you would like to help please join me on Facebook: or contact me at whitbyagainstlitter@gmail.com. It is early days but every journey starts with a single step. George Pearson, CCW Site Team

3 BOOK OF THE WEEK FROM THE GCSE SUGGESTED READING LIST Beowulf A New Verse Translation by Seamus Heaney Composed toward the end of the first millennium of our era, Beowulf is the elegiac narrative of the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel s mother. He then returns to his own country and dies in old age in a vivid fight against a dragon. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on in the exhausted aftermath. In the contours of this story, at once remote and uncannily familiar at the end of the twentieth century, Seamus Heaney finds a resonance that summons power to the poetry from deep beneath its surface. Drawn to what he has called the foursquareness of the Utterance in Beowulf and its immense emotional credibility, Heaney gives these epic qualities new and convincing reality for the contemporary reader. MUSIC CLUBS/ SUPPORT Mondays: folk band (Normanby, lunchtime) Tuesdays: Y12 catch up, 9.30am Wednesdays: Y11 revision, 3.30pm Thursdays: Theory day (KS4 and 5) Fridays: Scoresby music club (lunchtimes; all welcome to come and get involved with our primary schools tour!)
