1 News & Views Issue 5-12 October 2016 CO-PRINCIPALS AWARD RECEIVED BY OUR STUDENTS On Tuesday 4 October the Red Carpet was rolled out for a selection of students who received the CoPrincipals special award for achievements in various activities. All the students received 25 praise points for this award. The award winners included our successful Status Racing Team, members of our winning Spelling Bee team, students who have excelled in sports outside of College, among others. Please click here to view the full list of awardees. COLLINGWOOD CELEBRATES LANGUAGES At the end of September the MFL Department organised a series of events and competitions to celebrate European Day of World Languages. New Language Lessons at Lunchtime This was very popular. Huge thanks to Mr Bunter, Mr McKay, Mrs Ramires de Dixon and Mrs Lambert for giving up their lunchtime to offer our students the opportunity to broaden their minds. "This week there have been taster sessions for many different languages to celebrate diversity in Europe. I took part in a Portuguese session where we learnt simple greetings and numbers. We also tried some of Portugal's extravagant food and drink. It was delicious; thank you to Mrs Lambert." Nicole Sturcke - Year 8 CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
2 COLLINGWOOD STUDENTS EXCEL IN ENGLISH SCHOOLS X-COUNTRY EVENT Teams: On Wednesday 5 October seventeen of our students travelled to St Swithun s School, Winchester for the Hampshire round of the English Schools X-Country. Arriving to glorious sunny weather the students were very keen to get going and soon enough the first race for the Years 7/8 girls was underway. All the girls performed magnificently well but notable performances from Jules Rabey (7th) and Jessica Gates (9th) who both ran very well to get inside the top 10. Following the girls race the Years 7/8 boys event got underway and Max Duckworth went out fast and led from the front the entire way to win comfortably in the end, a magnificent achievement against some strong competition. Years 9/10 boys and girls races followed and all students who took part were a credit to the College on what was a very hilly course in some strong winds. All runners are now looking forward to our next event at Lightwater Country Park in November. Years 7/8 girls: Jules Rabey, Emily Dillamore, Nicole Sturcke, Maya James, Jessica Gates and Lara Pearson Years 7/8 boys: Max Duckworth, Toby Mann, Sam Hillman, Oscar Watkin and Luke Stanton Years 9/10 girls: Hannah Barratt and Sophie Wilkinson Years 9/10 boys: Cameron San Emeterio, Giles Rhoden, Bertalan Berenyi and Jack O Hara Mr Andrews Year 11 Manager and PE Department DATES FOR YOUR DIARY - DON T MISS OUT! Wednesday 12 October: Thursday 20 October: Friday 21 October: Celebration of Student Achievement (by invitation only), 7.00pm until 9.00pm, Camberley Theatre 6th Form Revue, 7.30pm until 10.00pm, Kingston Theatre End of Half-term, finishing at 3.05pm 6th Form Revue, 7.30pm until 10.00pm, Kingston Theatre Monday 31 October: Start of term for all students
3 COLLINGWOOD COLLEGE CELEBRATES LANGUAGES Le Petit Prince Book Cover competition Many students took part in this fun competition. The winners who recognised the most book covers in different languages are: Magnus Brodie Cooper and Daniel Sawyer - Year 8. Both students won a copy of the book Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint- Exupéry. Poetry Competition Every Year 7 and Year 8 class has taken part in this competition based around the word languages. The quality of the poems was so overwhelmingly good that we are still going through them and picking out the very best ones. We will announce the winners in next week's Newsletter. Ms Bauduin - Head of MFL Department CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 RETURN TO PAGE 2 YEAR 11 COUNTY CUP MATCH: COLLINGWOOD VS CHEAM HIGH SCHOOL Cheam arrived earlier than expected and were out on the pitch warming up before most of the Collingwood team had changed! This meant Cheam started the first half the dominant team, although they created very few chances. On Collingwood s small home pitch it is difficult to get in behind the defence and get a shot off, therefore most of Cheam s attempted shots were outside the penalty box making it easy enough for Collingwood to block, stopping the ball before it got anywhere near goal. Despite various changes to the Collingwood defence due to the absent Calum Wright and Sonam Gurung s early exit, Collingwood stood fast and managed to make it through to half time without seriously testing Scott Heard in goal. Collingwood were, therefore, well aware they needed to up their game in the second half in order to win the match. Following a firm half-time talk from Mr San Emeterio the team came out with a new found drive and regained control of the game, creating many more chances whilst restricting those of the opposition. Eventually Collingwood broke through, thanks to the introduction of Jake Hughes who played a taunting back heel pass through the legs of Cheam s left back into Joe Burrell s feet, who drove across the touch line before playing a pass to the arriving Connor Pearson on the edge of the box, who swept it home just inside the near post. Although this breakthrough was to the great relief of Collingwood they knew they still had a long 10 minutes to go to the final whistle. Cheam threw everything they had at Collingwood but could not & break through, even VIEWS when gaining multiple free kicks in the last five minutes of the game. Overall Collingwood were happy with the win, despite a disappointing lacklustre performance. Team: Scott Heard, Gavin Cox, Callum Palmer, Ryan Monkham, Connor Pearson, Elijah Anyan, Harry Rice, Beeshesh Rana, Sonam Gurung, James Barnett, Joe Burrell, Jake Hughes, Shane Clifford, Jamie Hobbs Connor Pearson - 11G
