News & Views Issue April 2017 YEARS 8 AND 9 STUDENTS SKI IN FRENCH ALPS The Years 8 and 9 Ski Trip to Les Deux Alpes during the Easter break was a huge success! 38 students, girls and boys, enjoyed a week of Spring skiing in one of France's most popular glacier skiing resorts at this time of year. Despite ever increasing temperatures during late March, early April, Les Deux Alpes continued to offer amazing opportunities for skiers of all abilities. Dry and slushy nursery slopes meant our beginners had the excitement of starting their lessons higher up the mountains and were already practicing small jumps on Day 2. The advanced skiers were led by a very experienced instructor and had the privilege of experiencing rocky off-piste skiing. CONGRATULATIONS TO.. Pelham pulled it out of the bag and astounded us all by & Pelham also entered VIEWS the Skate Copenhagen International competition at the beginning of April, where he had to skate a short and long programme for the first time. (Something he will only do at level 8 in this country.) Despite a bad cough and little sleep, he came first in both categories and proudly came home with the Gold. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 Pelham Wright (8F) who entered the Skate Southern ice-skating competition in March. This is his first big competition in over a year. Pelham skated like a demon. He was completely focussed and determined to give it his all, despite a pulled abductor hamstring. His aim was to score 30 which has always been a distant dream. There were 7 skaters in his level and Pelham was by far the smallest. This just made him try harder! scoring 37.2 and coming in 2nd. A huge result considering he only started to learn his routine in December with his new coach Peter Christmas Kjaer. This score has moved him up to level 7 and amazingly he has now also qualified for the British Championships in November. He is fired up now for his next competitions in Guildford in May and Coventry in June where he hopes to introduce some new higher level jumps to his routines. 3 Issue April 2017 YEARS 8 AND 9 STUDENTS SKI IN FRENCH ALPS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Learner jacket nominations and Donkey T Shirt awards were all taken in good spirit with some hysterical stories about skiing mishaps on the slopes. Staff commented on how well our Years 8 and 9 students got on in the evenings, having fun with a range of Apres Ski activities such as a Quiz, Games Night, Ten Pin Bowling and Ice Skating. Families staying at the hotel and the hotel management complimented our students for their behaviour in the hotel and around the resort, with the hotel staff saying that we were one of the easiest groups they had had in that season. Thankfully we returned with no injuries and the goggle marks from a week of sunny skiing weren't too bad! A wonderful week of skiing with a smashing group of Collingwood students. Massive thanks to those members of the admin department who spent hours tirelessly co-ordinating the trip and those fantastic members of staff that gave up part of their Easter holiday to come on the trip. Next year s Years 8 and 9 Ski Trip is already scheduled to go to Serre Chevalier in France, next Easter and there are plenty of spaces available for any students interested in going. Please ask Mrs Fuller in Barossa Reception for details. Mr J Beer - Head of PE Department/ Ski Party Leader RETURN TO PAGE 1
CONGRATULATIONS TO... CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Phoenix Govey-Gray (9J) who recently competed in the Northern Ireland Judo Open Championships. We are extremely proud to say that Phoenix displayed excellent judo, winning all of her fights by Ippon (maximum score) becoming Northern Ireland champion for her category (Pre cadet U63); this is her biggest achievement at international level yet! Luke Mann (10C) who competed in the Sportshall UK Athletics Finals last weekend in Manchester. He was the only U15 boy from the Surrey team to be invited to compete at the finals as an individual. He came third with a jump of 8.21m so took home the Bronze medal. So now he is third in the UK for Standing Triple Jump! Holly Davies (11K) who has just been informed that she has made Captain of the U17's England Basketball squad! Amazing achievements for all students!!! RETURN TO PAGE 2
RUGBY. Year 7 Our Year 7 team has played two rugby tournaments this term at Gordon s and Winston Churchill. Most of the team have never played rugby before so I was delighted when so many came to training to try a new sport. Next year I'm sure they will improve and develop. Over the summer months I m hoping many of these boys will join a local rugby club to learn more skills ready for the rugby season of Well done to all. Team: George Hodgkinson 7A, Tom Dunn 7F, Luke Hannaford 7A, Luca Ward 7J, Dougie Evans 7I, Luke Stanton 7E, Ruben Murphy 7A, Alex Wiseman 7G, Luke Whitbourn 7B, Joseph Wilson 7F, Nathan Cummings 7J, Nathan Barnes 7E Year 8 Unfortunately, every county 13-a-side tournament this season has either fallen on the same date as Collingwood s open evenings or a frozen pitch has meant that the tournament was called off. However, the boys did manage to play at the Gordon s and Winston Churchill 7s tournaments last term. Year 8 have many very good club players and have the potential to be a very good College team. Training has been regularly on a Thursday all year. I will be excited to watch their progress when they move into Year 9 15-a-side next season, with regular training together. Team: Luke Stewart 8I, Mackenzie Dyche-Brookes 8D, Jack Laker 8H, James Alcock 8K, James Wilson 8E, Hayden Hackett 8, Jack Johnson 8B, Alex Murray 8D, Nathan Everett 8J, Joe Handley 8K, Joe Ford 8D, Jack Matthews 8B, Jamie Sturt 8E, Kye Woolston 8E, Jason Richards 8C, Neeseph Ria 8D Year 9 also cancelled. Finally, the last two weeks we have played The Year 9 team has had another excellent year, winning their first Surrey 15-a-side tournament against Howard and Effingham in the final. The second tournament they made the final pool in the semis but lost to Graveney school in a 5 minute game. The last tournament was cancelled due to frozen pitches the week before the Year 8 tournament was the District Gordon's 7s tournament in which we came second to Gordon s, losing on points difference. On Monday 27 March they won the Winston Churchill 7s beating an excellent Howard and Effingham side in the final. I m incredible proud of them all! Cannot wait for next season to see what we can achieve! 7s players: Harry Johnson 9E, Josh Lovell-Smith 9I, Luke Wiseman 9C, Tom Wyatt 9K, Chris Lear 9E, Cameron Voss 9C, Danny Watson 9K, Sam Attard 9A, Finn Ward 9E, Toby Nowell 9C, George Inoke 9K, Matt Hill 9A, Dan Parry 9E CONTINUED ON PAGE 6
RUGBY. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Year 10 The Year 10 team has played only 7s this season due to low player numbers. The Year 10 club players play in the Year 11 team. They played so well in the week leading up to the end of term considering they learnt very quickly rugby union s rucking, maul, line out and scrum! I was very proud of these obviously talented sportsmen and the way they picked it up! Team: Tom Handley 10A, Alex Winfield 10F, Josh Winton 10I, Finn Irwin-Hill 10A, Joe Foster 10B, Stanley Emerson 10C, Owen Heard 10F, Oliver Merrett de Souza 10F, Ben Griffin 10B, Louis Elmer 10B, Chris Hockey 10I. Year 11 The Year 11 team s last tournament of the season was bitter sweet. They are lovely boys and unfortunately couldn t play the Surrey Plate final due to so many injuries courtesy of Rosslyn Park v Camberley the weekend before the final! Despite this, they managed to get a team together and went to Gordon s to play the 7s tournament. The problem was only Gordon s turned up to their own tournament and they have roughly 15 players and we had 8 so one sub! Despite this they played superbly never giving up and showing so much heart. I wish them all well in the future! 7s team: Euan Murray 11I, Cameron Reid 11J, Harry Sawyer 11G, Richard Lovell-Smith 11E, Josh Martin-Jones 11B, Devraj Juneja 11A, Antony Snook 11K. Miss Robinson - PE Department
PARENTS INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA SAFETY SESSION - THURSDAY 4 MAY KINGSTON THEATRE 7.00PM UNTIL 8.00PM On Thursday 4 May at 7.00pm we would like to invite parents along to a session that will help you to keep your child safe both on the Internet and on Social Media if they are using it. This will take place in Kingston Theatre from 7.00pm until approximately 8.00pm. We are increasingly worried about some students who have open, unmonitored access to social media platforms and the internet. Ex-Collingwood College member of staff Miss Eaton (expert in this field) will run the session with support from Mr Cleary (Safeguarding and Behaviour Lead). The session will cover: The current, popular Apps what they can/cannot do and access. The legalities of some of the behaviours young people are carrying out nationwide How to control/monitor the usage on your child s device/s. Top tips to keep them safe online. As a prelude to this, Miss Eaton and Mr Cleary will deliver a session to the current Year 7 students, that very afternoon. All other year groups that have received a similar session in the past 12 months will have refresher assemblies delivered by Mr Cleary at the beginning of the term. If you cannot attend please can we ask that you take a vested interest in monitoring your child s internet and social media usage. In the vast majority of the few potentially serious situations we have encountered at Collingwood, parents were not aware of what their children were posting or accessing via their devices. I will be issuing an abridged version of the presentation but urge you to attend if you can spare around an hour of your time. Mr Cleary - Assistant Principal / Designated Safeguarding Lead I would be grateful if you could confirm your attendance and how many places you require at this session by ing j.cleary@collingwood.surrey.sch.uk.
