Temple Visit Year 11 and Year 13 Philosophy and Ethics students had an informative and enjoyable visit to the Hare Krishna temple in Newcastle, where they were able to have frank, in-depth discussions with the Priestess about Hindu attitudes and beliefs. They also had fun with the ceremonial drums, handpaints and saris, and were given a delicious Indian meal for lunch. An Evening of Art On Wednesday 14 November Miss Gordon and Mrs Wallace invited Art and Textiles students to an evening of Art. 48 of our dedicated and enthusiastic students stayed after school from 3-7pm working on their projects. Year 10 students took the opportunity to catch up and present their sketchbook work while Year 11 students were keen to develop ideas in preparation for their Art mock exam on the theme of the seaside. Well done to all who attended.
Art Competition Students were invited to create entries for Art and Textiles on the theme of winter or Christmas. Well done to all of the Art Competition winners! There were some amazing entries and the judges, Mrs Wallace and Miss Gordon, had the difficult task of choosing the top prize winners. They were: Daisy 9JL Emma 9JL Dylan 9LET Alina 9TLA Emmy 9RW Amber 9RW Artwork by Amber 9RW Performing Arts Department The department proudly presented a full-scale production of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein earlier this month. This was a culmination of months of hard work, collaboration, rehearsal and design. Students took this classic gothic novel and adapted it for the contemporary stage. It was very well received and played to large audiences on both nights. We are now working towards full productions of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg and The Crucible - both of which will afford the students the opportunity to develop their skills towards a wide range of assessed units. Watch this space for further details Philosophy Conference On Friday 23 November, Year 13 Philosophy and Ethics students attended a University-style lecture conference in Newcastle s St. Nicholas Cathedral, hosted by the renowned philosopher Dr Peter Vardy. Dr Vardy commented on the students attentiveness, enthusiasm and grasp of the very difficult concepts discussed, and some of the students (and Miss Wills!) couldn t help but get involved in the debate at the end of the day: This house believes that individual conscience is the best guide to moral decision-making... what do you think?
Curtain Up Year 10 students from the Drama department enjoyed a Saturday matinee performance of Macbeth as their second visit to see live theatre this term as part of their GCSE Drama course. The production was excellent, with a really innovative stage design. This was a double-value visit as it will also support the same students with their GCSE English Literature set text. Well done everybody on a really enjoyable day out! Watch this space for details of our next theatre trip. Noughts & Crosses
Year 11 Macbeth trip On 15 November, 35 Year 11 English students enjoyed a visit to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle, where the National Theatre s production of Macbeth played to packed houses. It is the most popular Shakespeare play for GCSE Literature study, so this was a great opportunity for our students to get it from page to stage and everyone left with a better understanding. The production was surreal in some respects with pole dancing witches, decapitated heads being inexplicably deposited in plastic carrier bags raised a few eyebrows. A Porter with a broad Geordie accent got a massive round of applause just for sounding local. A good time was had by all. Science Club Science Club has kicked off this year with bang! It is aimed at Year 9 students every Wednesday lunch time in room 134. Students are currently growing crystals, creating methane bubbles, elephant s toothpaste and setting off methane rockets! Ira Lightman - Visiting Poet On Monday 5 November the English department had a really lovely opportunity when Ira Lightman, local Greenside poet, came into school to work with students on the theme of the Armistice. No stranger to the Prudhoe community, Mr. Lightman designed The Glade installation - a thought provoking feature of the town. Despite the short notice, we were able to arrange for Mr. Lightman to work with students in Years 9, 10 and 11; the words of many of our students were recorded to be used in an installation about WW1 at Alnwick Garden. The students also enjoyed finding out about the work of Hexham WW1 poet Wilfred Gibson, and used his poetry to inspire their own thoughts about war.
Year 9 MFL Pen Pal links with France and Spain Students in 9JL were ecstatic to receive personalised Christmas Cards from Year 9 Spanish students in a school in Seville, Spain. As the students from Seville kindly wrote to us in English, our students responded with letters or cards written in Spanish. In addition, 9RW, 9DRH and 10D wrote personalised letters in French to Year 9 and 10 French students in a school in the Nord-Pasde-Calais region of France. Well done to all of our MFL students, we look forward to receiving more letters from our French and Spanish pen pals in the future! Sixth Form Reverse Advent Calendar What started as one Tutor group s good idea to support the local food bank very quickly became something everyone in Years 12 and 13 wanted to get involved in, so the reverse advent calendar was born. Rather than GETTING something, the point was to GIVE, so students started bringing in toiletries and non-perishable foodstuffs. It was perhaps a shock to some students to learn that there actually is a locally based food bank which is in the Spetchells Centre in Prudhoe, and to discover the number of families who depend on this vital service. They surpassed their goal and their donations filled a huge trolley which was a massive boost to the Prudhoe food bank stock. Hopefully their efforts will make Christmas a little better for the families using the service. May we encourage you to join us in our efforts and drop any donations into the collection point at Prudhoe Co-op. Every little helps!
Football The Year 9 football team beat Kings Priory 8-0 at home to progress to the next round of the Tyneside Schools Cup. A major highlight was Zach netting 4 goals and putting in a fantastic performance. The Year 10 football team beat local rivals Ponteland 5-1 in their opening league game. A fantastic performance from the boys in their first league game together. Their next league game will be after Christmas away at Astley. The Year 11 football team are through to the next round of the County Cup after beating North Gosforth at home on penalties. A really hard fought 0-0 game after 90 minutes led us to penalties. Some heroics from Thomas and a winning penalty from Harry sent us through to the next round. U19 Football The U19 football team continue to go unbeaten in the league and all cups. They are now over half way in the league and are sitting proud at the top of Division 1. See below for the current league positions. They finish the year with a game against Whickham on the 19 December 4pm kick off, in the Tyneside cup. All support would be welcome. 9 Sixth Form Sports Leaders It has been a busy few weeks for the Y12 and Y13 Sports Leaders. Y13 have been working with both Ovingham Middle School and Highfield Middle School by introducing them to the sport of handball. The students will be running the lunchtime and after school clubs at the Middle Schools in the run-up to Christmas, resulting in a tournament with other Middle Schools in the Tynedale area. Year 12 spent the afternoon working with Highfield Year 6 Playground leaders. They were delivering activities and workshops to help the Year 6 develop their leadership skills. Great work by all involved. Basketball results Year 9 Prudhoe 14-6 Cramlington TSSSA Tournament 2nd Year 10 TSSSA Tournament 3rd Winning games against RGS A team Losing against RGS B and St Cuthbert s Year 11 Prudhoe Cramlington TSSSA Tournament 2nd Prudhoe is proving to be a hotbed for basketball with teams doing well at all age groups. The Year 9 team have played with maturity and cool heads throughout every single game with four victories and only two narrow losses. Year 10 & Year 11 players have kept a positive attitude throughout their tournaments and only missing out on progression by a few baskets. The Year 11 team demonstrated that they have developed well with an excellent performance at their tournament, improving on 4th place last year to 2nd place this year and narrowly losing in a tight deciding game against St Cuthbert s. Year 9 Most Valuable Players: Adam and Zak Year 10 Most Valuable Player: Max Year 11 Most Valuable Player: Harry (who also took part in Year 10 tournaments)
Rugby The U15 rugby team took part in a festival at Kingston Park in November. They won all their games, including victories over Churchill & Bede Academy. A number of Year 9 s stepped up to play at U15 level and did a fantastic job. England Rugby Under 18 s Congratulations to Year 13 student Maisie who has been selected for the England Rugby Under 18s. Girls Rugby Festival The first Girls rugby festival of the year was held at Kingston Park. We had 24 Year 9 and 10 girls competing that day in two different teams. Both teams played some outstanding rugby in tough conditions. We can t wait for the next festival in the New Year. All girls are reminded that Rugby training is on Wednesday nights after school 3-4pm. Rowing On Tuesday 11 December students from all year groups travelled to Cambois rowing club to take part in the annual area indoor rowing competition. The event was tough, with students pushing themselves to achieve some fantastic distances within their allocated times. A massive well done to Zak who finished first in his age category and qualified for the North of England team. Area Cross Country On a cold sunny morning 30 athletes from the High School took part in the Area Championships. The Inter boys team again won this event for the second year in a row. They were led by an outstanding performance by Rowan who won an excellent race, holding off his nearest rival with an impressive sprint finish. Other notable performances came from Charley 3rd in the Inter girls, Oscar 4th, Sam 5th and Megan 7th. The following athletes also qualified for the County Championships Joe, Josh, Dominic, Jake and Matt. Futsal The U16 boys are through to the final of the U16 Tyneside Schools Futsal. In an unfamiliar sport, the boys played exceptionally well and won both of their games 5-1 and 5-3 to go through. They will play the winner of the Durham district competition in 2019.
