The rest of the students and staff joining in gave the GCSE dancers and Miss Edwards, the energy boost they needed to get through the final three hours.

The whole school had dressed up for the event sporting 70 s/80 s Disco gear and paying 1 towards this worthy charity. The dancers began their five hour stint with a bit of a shuffle, a lot of twists and even some moon walking. However as they hit the two hour mark they were joined by the whole school on the playground for a bit of YMCA, Macarena, and Hey Baby! along with many more classic party hits. The rest of the students and staff joining in gave the GCSE dancers and Miss Edwards, the energy boost they needed to get through the final three hours. As the last hour approached fifty other students, including Sixth Formers, joined the group for a bit of Zumba, and finally You ll Never Walk Alone to finish the day off. The group raised a total of 510 for the charity and I think it is fair to say they were all aching for the rest of the week, but openly admitted It was well worth it! Wolgarston High School hosts a number of dance, performing arts and music events throughout the year and welcomes all members of the public to the evening shows they produce. Coming up before Christmas there will be a dance event involving not only Wolgarston students but also showcasing the Middle Schools. It is great to see the youth of today becoming so involved in such events and we look forward to welcoming you into our school for the productions. This was Zack's third visit to the school after also giving talks to parents during the recent Year 11 Sixth Form Open evenings. This week saw the first Fun Friday of the term for Sixth Form students. Mr Swinnerton and Mr Rogers demonstrated the powerful effect of Newton's Third Law via the medium of ethanol, combustion and a plastic bottle! The students were then given the opportunity to fire arrows from cross bows into a set target in order to win a special (chocolate) prize. Fun Friday is a half termly activity in which all students are given the opportunity to take part in something fun together within the Sixth Form. Staffordshire University Visit Year 10 Computing students went to Staffordshire University to discover first-hand what it is like to be a University student. Students had a tour of the campus and took part in various workshops organised by the Computer Science Faculty. The workshops involved games programming, visual effects, music technology and film making. Here are some student quotes: I learnt a lot about University and I really want to go now. Visual effects was good because we learnt how to edit a person s image so that it looked realistic after being green screened and put onto a background. It was very good making beats on the Macs. I really enjoyed it and I want to get more into it.

3 Former 400m Indoor Champion DANIEL CAINES visits Wolgarston. Daniel is a World, Commonwealth, European and Europa Cup Champion in the 400m and 4x400m relay, having represented his country at two Olympic Games, a remarkable achievement considering he was once confined to a wheelchair by sporting injuries. Daniel had an action packed day when he visited Wolgarston; this included him putting the Year 10, 12 and 13 BTEC sport groups and numerous members of the PE Department through their paces as he demonstrated some of the exercises that he would have to do as part of his daily training regime on his way to winning the World Indoor Championships! Daniel also met with the Year 10 and 11 GCSE PE students. In these sessions, Daniel discussed various parts of his career and the hurdles he has had to overcome in life to enable him to compete in two Olympic Games! As part of the Sky Sports Scheme Daniel has been providing support and guidance to the Year 13 BTEC Sport group in their quest to set up and run an afterschool club, the club enables a range of Year 10 students to have the chance to participate in a variety of different sporting activities. Daniel was hugely impressed with the activities that the group have set up and are now running on a weekly basis! We were lucky enough that Daniel brought his medals into school; hopefully this won t be the last time a Wolgarston student gets their hands on an Olympic or World Championship Medal!

The Year 9 Football Team Have an Eventful Away Day! On Thursday 24 October the Year 9 Football team travelled to Weston Road High School in Stafford.

4 The Year 9 Football Team Have an Eventful Away Day! On Thursday 24 October the Year 9 Football team travelled to Weston Road High School in Stafford. Unfortunately it was a disappointing evening in many respects, the team coach broke down on the way to the fixture but thanks to a quick replacement being sent out to us we managed to get to Weston Road in enough time to get a game in. Wolgarston started strongly and took a deserved lead through George Powell thanks to a 25 yard wonder strike which flew in to top corner. Unfortunately Weston Road equalised just before half time thanks to some sloppy marking from the Wolgarston defence. The goal before half time appeared to have upset our passing rhythm as we struggled to keep the ball and in the end Weston Road ran out deserving 3-1 winners but we look forward to a rematch later in the school year! Year 11 Basketball County Cup After the successful season last year which saw the lads win the School Games Competition our Year 11 Basketball team have been handed a difficult looking draw in the first round of the County Cup! We will play De Ferres School from Burton at home, please see the next SNU for pictures and a match report! Y11 Boys Programme in County Cup! The Year 11 football team have progressed into the third round of the County Cup after an impressive display in difficult conditions at Alleynes (Stone). We started brightly moving the ball around quickly on a boggy surface. Joe Barclay started the scoring off, finishing a well worked one touch move with ease. The lads kept pushing on and were creating chance after chance; one of these chances resulted in a Wolgarston corner. Josh Eyre delivered with perfection for Charlie Sneddon to power the header home. Alleynes started the second half well and it was the Wolgarston defence that was under pressure but were coping well until a good bit of individual skill saw Alleynes pull it back to 2-1. The final 15 minutes saw the light fade dramatically and made for very testing conditions for both teams. Lewis McDermott made an outstanding save tipping over from a powerfully struck shot, thankfully the final whistle sounded shortly after and the third round spot was Wolgarstons! The Team: Lewis McDermott, Dom Mees, Will Pickstone, Josh Eyre, Ben Gibson, Jay Gibson, George Cumming, Charlie Sneddon, Reece Boult, Matty Ellis, Mark McDonald, James Burdett, Callum Head, Joe Barclay. Street Cheer Leadership During half term week we hosted a dance leadership course for our students. Almost 20 girls signed up for the course and gave up a day of their holiday in order to gain the nationally recognised award. The course was partly funded through our School Games Coordinator and the great news is that all of the girls passed the award some even gained 100% in their exam at the end! The girls are now qualified to lead dance sessions under supervision and assist at Dance Clubs. Well done to all involved!

5 What Did You do Over Half Term??? One Student Became a National Sailing Champion! Over the weekend of the 2-3 of November, Year 11 student Will Hawkins took part in the very wet and windy 2013 GP14 Youth National Sailing Championships held in Staffordshire. Will competed against other youths up to the age of 21 years old and finished a respectable 6th overall. However, after beating off all of the other junior competition, Will won the title of Under 16 Youth National Champion with a tally of 24 points in 6 one hour races. Congratulations Will! Cross Country Well done to the Cross Country team who battled against mud, wind and rain at Stafford Grammar School in order to complete a tough course. Wolgarston had some high placed finishes with several of our runners being selected to represent Staffordshire. A special mention goes to Pippa Roebuck who was the highest placed Wolgarston girl ( 12 th ) and to Charlie Sneddon who was the highest placed Wolgarston boy (3 rd ).
