1 Bowbrook E-News Friday 27 th November 2015: With a full school Carol Service rehearsal at the Abbey yesterday and an excellent Christingle Service led by J6 today in Peopleton Church I think it is official Christmas has arrived! With two weeks to go I have attached the Run Up to Christmas schedule which includes all the important dates for you. I look forward to seeing many, if not all of you, at some point over the next two weeks. The Carol Service, The Nativity, School Discos and Christmas Film Nights It promises to be a very busy fortnight. Please Note: Term dates: Term finishes at 3.30 p.m. on Friday 11 th December. Term Starts for Year 11 only on Tuesday 5 th January. Term starts for all other year groups on Thursday 7 th January Book Fair: A big thank you to everyone who supported the Book Fair this year It is very heartwarming to see The Book still very much in demand and how many avid readers we have in our midst. You helped raise an excellent , which means we will be able to choose a very healthy worth of books for both the libraries. Thank you! Also- a very special thank you to: Mrs Stephenson, Mrs Wiles and Mr Heyes for their invaluable help in running the fair over the past few days and also to Tom Dayer. Art News: Mrs Mellor was inspired recently by the sheer energy and enthusiasm of Steve Backshall who hosted a show at Malvern Theatres earlier this month. He likes getting up close and personal to wildlife and the footage in his film show was awesome. He shared with us some of the statistics about the rate at which species are dying out and at risk of becoming lost forever. His aim is to raise awareness and encourage humans to be mindful of this in the way we coexist. I would like to make 'Endangered Species' the theme for a whole school Art competition. From the Hawksbill Turtle to the Hummingbird or right down to the Honey Bee, I want to see these creatures celebrated in your art works. *Anyone can enter and the entry can be made from any materials or media. You can paint, draw, model, collage, stitch, knit. *I am giving everyone plenty of time to think and make. Entries can be brought back to school in January during the first week of the Spring Term. It may seem like an age, but it is only seven weeks away! *There will be some cute and cuddly prizes on offer for the winning entries, as well as some art materials. ALL work will be on show. The judge will be someone from the world of wildlife conservation. *With Arts Week coming soon afterwards (in February) there will be a chance to display the work as an exhibition for all parents and friends to see. So, come on...let's have a really big response from you, Bowbrook! Look out for the flyers coming soon.
2 Year 9 visit to Worcester Museum and Art Gallery: We spent an industrious morning at the Gallery in Worcester, collecting research materials for our sketchbooks. From the tiniest fossil to the huge sturgeon, no stone was left unturned. Pupils responded well and it was a real treat to see so many engaged in sketches and note taking. Five lucky pupils had Mr. Allen as their companion for the morning and they together shot a good selection of photographs to work from back in the classroom. Well done, once again, for making the trip rewarding with your good conduct and mature response. Mrs Mellor News from the Lower School: A very big thank you to all J6 pupils for leading our Christingle service this morning at Peopleton Church and to their parents that supported us. I have been asked by several members of Lower school staff to politely remind parents of our morning drop off times; Infants and Juniors from 8.10 am Nursery and Reception from 8.20 am Next Friday we have Festive Friday across the school. To add a little extra festive cheer the pupils of N/R to J6 are invited to come to school wearing a Christmas jumper! Mrs Ridge Miss Worcestershire: Laura Morris is a past pupil of Bowbrook and a Miss Worcestershire finalist. This is a competition for the next ambassador of Worcestershire. The competition is judged on personality, initiative and charity fundraising. Laura writes: I am very excited and honoured that Bowbrook House School has sponsored me as a finalist which I hope will bring positive publicity to the school. When I was asked to find a sponsor I immediately thought of Bowbrook as I truly believe that my time at the school helped to "shape" me as an individual and give me confidence in my abilities. Laura still has strong connections with the school as her sister, Samantha, is currently in year 8. Her next task in preparation for the final (which is on the 10th January 2016) is to make an Eco dress and she is running her ideas past Mrs Mellor. In connection with this she is currently collecting all types of unwanted green coloured fabric to make the skirt - if you have any at home, please bring it into school - all donations will be greatly received. Laura would like to display her dress at school at some point in the future. Laura adds: If you wish to follow my progress throughout the competition you are more than welcome to "like" my Facebook page:' Laura Morris 2016 Miss Worcestershire Finalist'. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Laura Mathematics Puzzle No 5:
3 The last puzzle proved to be a little tricky and I did get some quite strange replies for some of them. I only received 7 correct answers from the following: Mrs Heaume, Daisy Hill Yr 8, Will Stead J4, Felix Miller Mead & family J4, Emma Hudson J4, Tom Worth & family I2 and the winning team from Yr 11 girls Evie Cooke, Freya Seymour, Lois Troughton & Katie Howland. Congratulations to all who did complete the puzzle correctly. The new maths puzzle is attached which has a Christmas theme to it. The closing date for this problem is Monday 7 th December. Good luck. Miss Brookes Sports News: U11 Football V s Heathfield: Lost 5-3 A well fought match which was tight throughout until the closing minutes. All of the boys did well and made this a competitive encounter. Dan Chessman performed how we have become to expect, with vigour and skill to bamboozle the opposition. Henry Siviter defended well and performed an excellent header to keep the attackers at bay. Ben Garside showed his left footed prowess with some excellent passes and clearances. Each and every team member played their part and we are looking forward to our next match against Bredon on Tuesday. Midlands ISA Junior Swimming - Tuesday 24th November: Just three pupils from Year 4, 5 and 6 attended the ISA Midlands Junior Swimming Gala at Walsall Swimming baths on Tuesday. Jack Pickering from Year 4 competed in the Backstroke (5th in heat) and the Freestyle (5th in his heat). It was Jack's first ever swimming gala and he handled the pressure with courage and determination. Jessica English in Year 5 competed in the Breaststroke gaining 3rd place in her heat and in the Freestyle clinching another 3rd place in her heat. Jessica performed very well under the pressure. Callum Caldwell from Year 6 took part in the Breaststroke gaining a 3rd in his heat, and Callum also achieved another 3rd in his heat in the Freestyle. All three competitors performed very well under pressure and we are very proud of their performances. We will wait for the final confirmation of times and places and find out if any of competitors have qualified for the National Gala in the very near future. U16 Football V s River School: Won 6-0 A great result from the boys. We dominated from the start with a very early goal from Will Downey within the first minute! We spent most of the game camped in the oppositions half and although some chances were missed, we managed to score a good number whilst at the same time, switching the team around so that all were fully involved and were able to play in a number of positions. Will added to his tally to make a total of 2 goals. Dan Fellows also scored twice. Tom Dayer and Aaron Whelan added one goal each to make the final score of 6-0 U13 Football V s Heathfield: Won 6-3
4 Another emphatic win to go towards and excellent week. We dominated this fixture from the beginning and were actually 6-0 up come half time. We re-organised the team and offered opportunities for others to play for the school team and the result was a fair reflection of a game of 2 halves. 2 goals from inspirational captain, Ollie Clear, a further 2 from speedy striker, Stan Murry, one own goal and a final scored by Harry Atkinson complete the final score. A great effort boys. Well done. U11 Hockey V s Dodderhill: Won 6-3 The U11 girls hockey team revisited Dodderhill for their final match of the season hoping to come home victorious once again. This they did, in great style, and they demonstrated their best structure and formation to date working extremely well as a team both in defence and in attack. Goals were scored by Isabel Lewis, Holly Allart and Nia Bale. All eight girls worked very hard showing aggression and determination against a bold Dodderhill side. Macy Denney Richards deserves a special mention as she is really in the U9 age category but played with skill and aggression in this team. She was a strong team player in attack despite her young age and was well looked after by the U11 girls - not that she needed it! Well done girls! Next Weeks Fixtures: Students should check the PE notice board to see if they are involved in fixtures.
