2 Volume 5 Issue 1 Melissa Carlson Vice President Wisconsin Hello from Wisconsin! I am glad that spring is breaking in Wisconsin. Time to start breeding for the fall shows and planning for convention winners. Putting in the time now will pay off this fall on the show table. I personally didn't have many litters this winter and am hoping change is coming to my barn. I hope everyone is planning on making the drive to Sedalia Missouri for Silver Marten Nationals on April 28. We have a great show planned. You can show your martens 3 times that weekend, National show and specialty on Saturday and an all breed show on Sunday (martens are a starting breed). The deadlines and other show info should be elsewhere in the newsletter. Make sure you get your entries in to me. There is no excuse to not attend the Marten family reunion. If you are a newer breeder, we are always looking for long lost cousins and occasional crazy uncles to join our family. I'll keep this short and hope to see you all in Sedalia. Can't wait to talk to everyone there! Ron Riddle, Director Indiana First I would like to thank Bonnie Saunier for her past years of doing the newsletter. Hard job and I am glad she was able to do this for the Silver Marten Club. Always seem hard for our directors on getting an article for the Marten News (ME INCLUD- ED). Always hard to find something to write about, especially during the winter months. Not many shows to go to, and see any Marten members. On the bright side, this February at the Huntington, IN show, a Black Silver Marten doe in the youth won 4 class in the first show. It was one that I sold after the convention to a young lady in Indiana, and I was real glad to see her take such good care of it all through the winter. Her dad said she had it bred in hopes of Juniors for her county fair. Spring National Silver Marten show will be held in Missouri, last weekend in April. Host club putting it on is the WI Silver Marten club. I am sure between Connie and Melissa they will come up with some nice awards, they always have in the past. Last reminder, we need Marten members to step up and get a petition to run for office. That includes ones that are already in office and any new persons interested in running for an office. 3 Tex Thomas, Director Missouri 3 Its certainly been an eventful winter in Missouri. I finally broke down and got that bad knee replaced in January. Needless to say I was laid up with Tonna having to do the feeding of the cows and rabbits, and of course that was the worst stint of winter weather we had all year. Luckily, I was back up and able to do the chores after 2 weeks, but if you ask Tonna, it was more like 2 years. I m progressing fine and was up judging again after 6 weeks. I m certainly able to get around better than I was in Indianapolis, where carrying rabbits back and forth started to become a painful experience. On to brighter news. I hope everyone has marked their calendar for April 28th for the Marten Nationals in Sedalia, Mo. I m enclosing a flyer with the motel and banquet information listed. I wouldn t wait too long to book motel rooms as the Dwarf Hotot Nationals and a horse show will be going on that weekend. While Sedalia is home to the state fairgrounds (where the show will be held), it is a fairly small town with limited motels. Judging for the National Marten will be conducted by Joel Marshall, with Cindy Wickizer judging the specialty show all on Saturday. On Sunday there will be a double all breed show available for those looking to rack up some sweepstakes points. Entry fees will be doubled for any sore heads, so put on your fun shoes, and lets have a good time in Sedalia. Looking forward to seeing everyone. 4 4 Stephanie Keranen, Director Minnesota Greetings from Minnesota! I have recently taken over the newsletter from Bonnie, sorry it has taken a little longer to get out to you. I would like to possibly start highlighting a breeder each issue, it will not only add things to the newsletter but also get to know everyone better. I have not had any luck with litters this spring, none of the does have been in the mood. I have my hopeful litters due in the next couple weeks. Unfortunately I will not be making it to spring Nationals this year, I do not have enough to show to make the journey alone. Shows around my area are just starting to kick off. Finding a place big enough host with heat is a big challenge for our area, as well as chances of poor weather. I hope to travel into WI more this year to see some more silver martens on the table. I do have some youth breeders starting to get hooked on martens and I hope they continue. If you have any concerns or suggestions for the next newsletter please let me know. The next one should go smoother and I will make sure I will start asking for newsletter articles sooner. Good luck and safe travels to everyone going to Sedalia! I wish I could be there. Due to the extremely low number of breeders registered, Silver Martens are considered critically endangered by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. The most famous painting called Young Hare was Painted in 1502 by Albert Durer. The rabbit as well as the hare have been associated with moon deities and may signify rebirth or resurrection. The oldest rabbit on record was 14 years old The largest rabbit on record was 4 ft long, he also died on an airplane. The Origin of the Easter Bunny? According to some sources, the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called Osterhase or Oschter Haws. Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across the U.S. and the fabled rabbit s Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests. Additionally, children often left out carrots for the bunny in case he got hungry from all his hopping.

In 1929 the blues were accepted, and in 1933 the sable variety was approved. These are the same 4 varieties still shown today.
