3 EVENT HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS Did you know that Sylvan Lake has a rich musical history? Much greater in scope than its relatively small population of 13,015 might suggest. From the legendary days of the Varsity Hall with its travelling bands to its famous dance hall days, the town has been home to some of the country's best jazz artists including two time Juno Award winner P.J. Perry. Sylvan resident Cheryl Fisher has been internationally recognized as one of Canada's most gifted jazz vocalists. MacLean's Magazine listed Sylvan Lake as one of the top ten beaches in Canada, the only one in Alberta to make the list. Described as the 'shining jewel nestled in the heartland of Central Alberta', Sylvan Lake attracts an estimated 1.3 million people annually, with many of them visiting during the summer. The success of the festival for the past 11 years has surpassed the community's wildest dreams with capacity crowds at every performance and uniformly rave reviews from public and press. Tuck Andress is a world-class guitarist, but he's also imbued with the rare gift of good taste. His musical partner and wife, Patti Cathcart, is an uncommonly soulful and inventive jazz stylist and among the best scat singers since Ella Fitzgerald. If ever a musical pair embodied the term "simpatico" it would be guitarist Tuck Andress and singer Patti Cathcart. The duo's knack for original interpretations of other people's songs remains their strong suit. Patti isn't afraid to contour her vocal stylings to enhance the material, proving to be a match for such heavyweights as Anita Baker, Anita O'Day, and Cleo Laine. Andress, whose complex, multilayered fretwork make him a force, can evoke shades of Earl Klugh or the legendary Wes Montgomery. You won't believe your ears (or eyes) when Tuck sounds like a whole orchestra with Patti soaring soulfully over the top! SATURDAY NIGHT Jack Semple Juno winner Jack Semple is one of those rare guitar players who leaves a crowd speechless, in absolute awe of what they have just experienced. He is a guitar player s guitar player. An absolute virtuoso of his art form, Jack plays with unparalleled feeling and total technical control. Jack Semple may live in Regina, Saskatchewan, a bastion of country music, but he plays with the soul and fire of a Mississippi Delta blues man. Jack has spent decades honing his craft and establishing himself as one of North America's premier guitar virtuosos. Now did we mention the man can sing? Jack has a set of pipes that are smooth as silk and as raw and jagged as rocks cutting through an ocean shore line. His vocal talents alone are an event to behold. Jack s album In the Blue Light won a 2013 Western Canadian Music Award for Best Blues Recording. This concert will showcase his amazing talents in both the blues and jazz genres.

5 2014 FESTIVAL FEATURED ARTISTS Johnny Summers Kickoff Swing Dance The Johnny Summers Little Big Band is an 8-piece ensemble with a smoking horn section that has been the featured band by public demand for the last 8 consecutive years at the festival kickoff Swing Dance. Johnny is a multifaceted musician: trumpet player, vocalist, arranger and bandleader. An engaging presence on the bandstand, he recently won the Global Music Award for Best Male Vocalist. Johnny formed the Calgary Jazz Orchestra in 2004 and presents a regular themed concert series annually with this great big band. This event always sells out and recalls the heyday of Sylvan Lake s 3 operating dance halls and the timeless sounds of big band music -- don't miss it! Caravana Gypsy Jazz Gypsies, Jazz & Fiddlers Concert At the beginning of the 1930's there was a new music being played at Parisian cafes and nightclubs. This new style was pioneered by Gypsy guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt and his musical partner, violin master Stephane Grappelli. Django was strongly influenced by American jazz masters like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and other jazz greats. He also drew on the passionate European styles of Flamenco, Tango and Bolero, combining these elements with his own Gypsy musical heritage. Let the Caravana Gypsy Quartet transport you back to the Paris of the 30's and 40's with their authentic and infectious Gypsy swing. If Caravana's music doesn't make your head bob and toes tap, better check your pulse! The Alberta Playboys Gypsies, Jazz & Fiddlers Concert Deep in the heart of Alberta, along the greasy pipeline, live The Polyjesters. When bored with their own repertoire the band transforms magically into a vintage country swing band known as The Alberta Playboys. Add some twang, vintage cowboy attire and a dash of whiskey and you have some country wannabe s that have never been on a horse. You will be whisked away to a time when jazz music was played by hillbillies and the crowd would square dance into the wee hours of the morning. Flashy guitar licks played by Aaron Young, Swingin beats brushed on skins by drummer Jon May, Sweet virtuoso melodies bowed by fiddler Jonathan Lewis and thumpy bass notes woofed by Jason Valleau on Upright Bass creates the provinces super group: The Alberta Playboys.

15 $1,500 SATURDAY, AUGUST PM PROJECT DISCOVERY The Jazz At The Lake Project Discovery is a provincially recognized performance program whose aim is to bring an innovative model of performance development to Central Alberta youth. Project Discovery provides young people the opportunity (for many the first time) to perform for a discerning but supportive audience at a major music festival. The workshop and master class attached to the program offers development for youth in a performance training program designed to introduce young people to the demands of the music performance world. We are currently looking for sponsors to support this innovative performance and development program for local youth. Help nurture our youth by creating a venue for new rising Alberta music Stars that will give them the opportunity to perform to a wider audience in the longest continuously running Jazz Festival in Central Alberta. In an afternoon concert, the 5-piece HOT Dixieland Jazz Band, attired in matching fire engine red vests and caps, entertains the crowd with all their old favourites and encourages them to sing along to the timeless classics of Tin Pan Alley. The concert traditionally ends in a New Orleans street parade with the band marching through the delighted audience to the strains of When the Saints Go Marching In. Both instrumentalists and vocalists will enjoy this unique learning experience. Each year Jazz At The Lake presents one of the headliners in an intimate, face to face, heart to heart jazz workshop. We have prided ourselves in keeping this event free and open to the public, who flock to the workshop to hear these musical masters demonstrate playing techniques, teach the secrets of their art, talk about their lives in music and even invite aspiring players to join them in a spontaneous performance. While the event is geared toward young musicians eager to learn more about their craft, it attracts just as many non-musicians who love to try to get inside the music more, and hear these world class artists discuss their art and life. Project Discovery participants are invited to perform, ask questions or just come and listen to these world class musicians in an intimate setting. Enveloped in a twinkle of glitz, sparkles and Stars, a select group of guests will return to the heyday of Las Vegas in the 50 s and the 60 s when the Rat Pack was king. Complete with a Sinatra crooner in the big band tradition, this stylish event is always our first to sell out. Held at the Meadowlands Golf Course in the big tent under the stars, this dinner, dance and silent auction event hopes to raise $10,000 towards the continuation of Jazz At The Lake, its performances and programs.
