Club News From the Board Room Well, March is here. Where have the last few months gone? I suppose in the coming few weeks we will see Woolworths selling Christmas stuff as soon as all the Easter Eggs have been sold. Inside The EMERGENCY CALL BUTTONS which are located on the stands between Greens 1 & 2 and 2 & 3 when activated in the event of an emergency GO DIRECT to the ambulance service which in turn despatch an ambulance to the club. Bowls Reports... Women s Mixed Men s The emergency button is NOT connected to the club. If an emergency happens again (which we hope it doesn't) as it did a few weeks ago - activate the emergency button & contact the staff at Reception who will in turn arrange for trained staff to attend to the greens as quickly as possible. There has been criticism that the staff did not attend quickly enough. The fact was no one told them until sometime later when trained staff attended as quickly as possible. This event has a happy ending with Jim receiving a heart pacemaker & now at home recovering. A message from Dr Bob Member Profile Emergency Call Button All Duty Managers & key staff must hold a current certificate to use & operate the Defibrillator. This certification must be updated on a yearly basis. All key staff are required to hold a First Aid Certificate which has to be renewed every three years. These courses are normally done by St John s Ambulance or someone who is suitably qualified. These courses are normally done on the premises as part of our staff training. Gil Steinhardt Easter Long Weekend Club Grants: The Board has approved to support an application from the Cudgen Rural Fire Brigade for upgrade works to their building/headquarters on the Coast Road as well as a further application from Little Wings which does not receive any Government funding but is a vital service that provides transport for sick children & their parents from all parts of NSW to Sydney & Newcastle for specialist treatment. Clubs NSW have agreed to support Little Wings for a three year period & the Tweed Club Grants Committee has also now agreed to provide ongoing support for the same period of time. Your Club will be investing $5,000 per year for the next three years to this very important services as part of our ongoing Club Grants requirements. Club Grants funding is a requirement for all Clubs who generate income over $1 million from Gaming to support local charities, sporting bodies & community needs with strict guidelines & controls. The Clubs can choose not to provide this service & nominate to pay the required funds directly as Tax to the Australian Tax Department which then gives no support to the much needed entities in local communities. Our Club has always been very supportive of local applications & are proud to be in a position to offer this financial assistance to local groups that meet the requirements. We are currently looking at how we can be more involved with supporting more Junior sporting projects in our local area at a time when local families & sporting groups are struggling financially. There has been $5.6M in club grants from all the clubs in the Far North Coast area in the past 12 months which overall equates to $101M dollars State wide to the benefit of local communities. There have been a few staff changes. Mitch has resigned as a fulltime Duty Manager to go to University to study Bio Medical Science. However he will be remaining on staff working a few casual shifts per week. continued overleaf Marine Parade, Kingscliff NSW Website: Phone: (02) Facebook: Car or the Cash

Club News Gary Day (Boof) has also resigned as a part time employee to take up a fulltime position as Manager of a caravan park. He also will be doing a few casual shifts per week so we can still enjoy his friendly commentary whilst enjoying the ride home in the bus. It is good to see Angela back at work after her illness. She still has some minor surgery in the future, we wish her well & a speedy recovery. I have been asked what has happened to the old bus as a Club asset, it was put up for tender. A notice was placed on the club notices board for 14 days (as required) in January. After tenders closed the Club had only received one Tender application which was accepted by the Board. During the months of March & April fire safety/fire warden training will be undertaken. This training is conducted every 2 years & is compulsory for all staff. Directors may also take part. This training covers all aspects of Fire safety which our staff need to make sure in the case of a fire emergency that we are all kept safe (hopefully they will never need to use their skills within the Club). All directors now have completed their current mandatory training courses as required by the NSW State Government & will still be required to attend training days once every 2 or 3 months. The Directors will still have further Mandatory Training over the coming year which is yet to be set by the regulators. The Board has approved, at the February meeting, 201 new Social Members, 5 male & 2 female full Bowling Members & we take this opportunity to welcome them all to our Club. With all the new & current bowlers coming here, both men & women, we should be very competitive. Whilst on the subject of bowls a very noted bowler Sir Francis Drake said, as the Spanish Amada approached Plymouth Hoe, he uttered the immortal words there is plenty of time to win the game & beat the Spaniards too (just try & put that one over when you are late going home). Another famous bowler Freddie Trueman once said Sir Francis drake was the last bowler to be knighted. Did you know that Melbourne, in 1880 was the richest city in the world. And speaking of wealth Australia's richest woman Gina Rinehart earns $1M every half hour or $598 every second. Hopelessly wrong predictions: After Alexander Graham Bell founded the telephone in 1880 in the USA a group of British experts said in 1900, The telephone may be appropriate for our American cousins but not here because we have an adequate supply of messenger boys. For & on behalf of the Board R. A. Graham JP Deputy Chairman

Club News Women s Bowls Report A successful Kingfisher 2 Bowl Triples tournament was held Monday February 16 with 30 teams participating. Rain stopped play for a brief period during the first game, but the sun returned & all teams were able to complete their games. Winners on the day with two wins & a margin of 18 were Kingscliff team Di Jones, Di James & Sandra Akers. Second place went to Sue Johnson, Sheila Cancillier & June Munn a combined South Tweed/Kingscliff team. A Cudgen team tied on wins & margin with Ocean Shores but managed to take third place on ends leaving Ocean Shores in fourth place. South Tweed & a composite team were round winners. Sue Trickey, Assistant Manager for Aged & Dementia Services at Lifebridge East, visited the Kingscliff Bowls Club Wednesday February 18 to accept a cheque from Women s President Janny Scher. The cheque was a donation comprising the proceeds of the Christmas Charity Raffle which was held in December. Lifebridge East offers age, dementia, & disability services in the area including the Tweed Valley Day Respite Cottage at Kingscliff. Congratulations to Joan Griffiths, Raewyn Liddington, Wyn Butler & Colleen Smith winners of the Open Fours final played Friday January 30 & to runners up Di Jones, June Scott, Robyn Fuller & Brenda Jack. Open singles championship games are progressing & have reached the semi final stage. Pennants begin the first week in March. Kingscliff has teams in all three grades this year & these teams are looking very strong. Can we win the district pennant in all three grades? Good luck & good bowling to all those taking part. Marg Atkinson Publicity Officer Mixed Bowls Report As we head into March summer is officially over for another year & we begin the slide into winter. March will be busy for Mixed Bowls with 3 visits in followed by 1 more in April. Please highlight these dates & times in your calendar: Sunday March 1 Gold Coast Teachers 1:00pm 40 visitors Sunday March 15 Hope Island Social Bowlers 9:30am 25 visitors Monday March 23 Sunshine Coast Social Bowlers 9:30am 57 visitors Sunday April 12 Waterloo Bowls Club 1:00pm 55 visitors QLD RSL Gold Coast Zone has reserved one Green on Sunday April 19 for use by their Members. Keep your eye out for our soon to be released Easter Sunday flyer. We will have a similar format to Australia Day. A fun afternoon for all with non bowlers & families welcome. Easter Sunday is on April 5. From time to time the equipment in the Umpires cases needs to be replaced. The Mixed Bowls Committee has offered us some of the raffle proceeds to replace the old mirrors & gauges. We are able to do this thanks to those of you who generously purchase raffle tickets on our visit-in days. Raewyn Liddington Secretary

Club News Men s Bowls Report The Tweed Valley Shield competition is at the halfway mark with Kingscliff A in second place on the ladder & Kingscliff B struggling a little at this stage. The 2015 Pennant season starts on March14 & as we have six divisions we need all hands on deck so please ensure your name is on the availability list even if you can play for only part of the 6 week season as your club needs you. With regard to Pennant, District & major Club Championships, Tweed Byron District has reminded us that the dress rules for these events are subject to possible disqualification if not adhered to as follows: BA Logo to be worn on shirts & jackets/vests; NSW approved official club attire to be worn; BA Logo to be on headwear; Side to be similarly attired. The Club Open Pairs Championship is down to the final with Ian Taylor & Smokey Dawson against Ken Banks & Jim Gibson which should be a great game. In the first District event for 2015, Ken Banks, Greg Barrack & Trevor Hills won the District Triples & Bob Reaburn, Jim Gibson & Gil Steinhardt won the District Senior Triples for a quinella for the club. Kingscliff had entries in the District Reserve Triples & the team of Michael Scott, Tom Green & Kim Taylor narrowly missed out on making it an all Kingscliff final on three greens. It was good to see Kingscliff players entering the district Reserve events. One of our oldest Bowling Members Roy Norris past away recently short of his century & was still bowling fiercely at 95 at our Christmas party in Roy s family have donated a new bowling arm to the club which is much appreciated. The $2,000 Easter Two Bowls Triples event commences at 10am on Easter Saturday (April 4) & a Mixed Triples all day event is on April13. Greg Barrack Publicity Officer ******* We are now over 8 weeks into the New Year & unlike last year we have lost a few days through inclement weather. Number 1 Green has been in tremendous condition; unfortunately it is being renovated shortly & will be out for about 3 weeks. Number 3 Green is slow but true & time & patience will see this Green in top order. Our Membership is climbing steadily with bowling numbers increasing week by week. Saturday numbers have been in the high 60 s, Thursday numbers around 100. Unfortunately some Fours games have to be played while we have only 2 Greens in play. It should be noted Kingscliff Men s Club has over 40% of District bowlers. Coming Events: Easter Saturday (April 4) - A Two Bowl Men s Triples event Monday April 13 - Open Two Bowl Triples event. This day can include mixed teams, Men s or Women s teams. Entry forms are available on the Men s notice board. It would be nice if members supported their teams in District events. It makes a difference to their play if they know they are being supported. Good Bowling! John Julius President

Club News Men s Selectors On behalf of the Selector s I would like to thank everyone who put their names forward for our Pennant season. We had 85 names listed. The season starts March 14. Teams have been selected for the 1 st game, look on the Pennant Board (names not on the list cannot be selected). We still require a Manager for Division 4. Tweed Valley Shield is still going on. A team is running 2 nd & B team are struggling a bit. We wish all teams the very best for the season. Good bowling, see you on the Green. Peter Murphy Men s Selectors A message from Dr Bob... OK, so now you have reached the biblical two score and ten ; where to from here? There are some evidence based recommendations to follow: Drink in moderation; eat a diet based on the Mediterranean model i.e. plenty of fruit & vegetables, fish & oil rather than butter with minimal or no salt. Maintain a sensible weight. Exercise body & mind regularly & get plenty of sleep. Make time for yourself & avoid stress. Avoid too much TV & protect yourself from the sun. Maintain social contacts with friends & relatives. Keep a check on your blood pressure & blood sugar levels your friendly GP will assist with this. What about the big C (cancer). Your family history will indicate your major risk; charred barbecue meat is not a big risk factor, red wine is not protective but chocolate may be! Here are the 7 basic signs that should prompt immediate action: Change in bowel or bladder habit A sore that does not heal Unusual bleeding or discharge Thickening (or lump) in breast or testicle or elsewhere. Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing Obvious change in size, shape, colour or thickness of a wart mole or mouth sore. Nagging cough &/or hoarseness. Further do not ignore persistent & unexplained fever, fatigue, weight loss or headache. Good luck & good health. Dr Bob Reaburn 58 years of General Practice

Club News Member Profile Gilbert Steinhardt (Born ) Walkways in Life I was a public servant at Police Headquarters, Brisbane. Later joined the Qld police force & became the first to be stationed at Surfers Paradise approximately 50 years ago. After 5 years I went into tenpin bowling finally moving to Sydney to manage the centre at Rockdale. Returned to Brisbane to be married & bought a fruit shop at Oxley. Looking to expand the business I made up fruit trays for the bowls club, where it all began in In the first year I won the Novice, B & A Grade Singles & then went on to win the A Singles 8 out of the next 9 years. In 1974 I became President of the club. My bowling expanded to the following clubs: Jindalee - Tarragindi - South Tweed Heads - Coolangatta & then appointed Bowls Co-ordinator & Coach at Cabarita Beach. I moved to Merrylands, Sydney in December 1995 where I stayed for 17½ years after which I returned to the Gold Coast & finally settled here in Kingscliff. During the years I amassed a long list of achievements including the following: 77 club championships, which includes 16 major singles, over 25 district titles which includes a Grand Slam whilst a member of South Tweed, Queensland Gilbert Steinhardt State Singles, Queensland State Fours (twice), Gold Coast Winter Carnival singles & pairs, Gold Coast Tweed District Player of the Year (3 times), many invitation singles including City of Light at Tamworth (twice), invitation singles South Tweed Heads, dual State Skipper (Qld & NSW), inaugural invitation fours at Neutral Bay, Sydney with Kelvin Kerkow as my third. I have so many great & fond memories during my journey with this wonderful game of ours. Park Beach brings back fun times with Tails & the boys. The crowds that came & supported me whenever I clashed with the showman, Rob Parrella. Over 2000 fans came to Banora Point BC to witness the antics during the final of the winter carnival singles. We have met 12 times, the score remains 6 all. I regard Rob as the best 4 bowl player I have ever encountered. The best 2 bowl player I would give to Rex Johnson. There are numerous stories I could tell but space won t permit. With the experience I have gained over 42 years of bowling I do hope that I can give something back to bowlers who are keen to improve in any part of their game. Believe me - there are many things to be learnt. Especially how to lose like a winner and win modestly. See you on the Green one day. Yours in bowling, Gil.
