1 MISSION STATEMENT The K.I.S. Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization committed to inform and educate the public, and raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease through community outreach programs and educational scholarships, and, by supporting the efforts of research institutions to find a universal cure. We are dedicated to improving the social health and quality of life for children, adults, and families living with Sickle Cell Disease, because sickness has no boundaries and compassion has no limits. This year, 2014, the K.I.S. Foundation, Inc. is focusing on ways to aide young adults in transition from pediatric care to adult care. Young adult SCD patients are often denied medical care in emergency rooms due to physicians lack of recognition/knowledge of SCD symptoms and appropriate medical procedures required.

2 What is Sickle Cell Disease? SICKLE CELL DISEASE IS AN INHERITED, NON-CONTAGIOUS BLOOD DISEASE THAT CAN BE CRIPPLING, EXTREMELY PAINFUL AND DEBILITATING, AND, IS ALWAYS LIFE-THREATENING. SCD PRIMARILY AFFECTS THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN, HISPANIC, AND ASIAN COMMUNITIES. HOWEVER, ANYONE CAN GET SCD.
