That s all there is to it, right? The United States Bowling Congress knows there s more to it than that. That s why the sport s national governing body has started a multi-phase study to expand on earlier research and gather data about how bowling pins the 3-plus pound, 15-inch tall objects that stand at the far end of a lane interact with bowling balls in today s bowling environment, which has changed dramatically over the years. For 25 years, the USBC and its predecessor organizations have studied how the an- SANTIAGO, Chile - Team USA exuded its dominance in the opening event of the 2008 Pan American Bowling Confederation Women s Championships, sweeping the medals Monday in singles. Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., took the gold medal with 1,482 for six games, an average of 247. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of North Richland Hills, Texas, won the silver with 1,449, while Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, earned the bronze with 1,448. Competing on the opening squad, Johnson got off to a strong start with games of 258, 279 and 224 and finished with 248, 215 and 258. She led from the first game and never looked back. I guess it s a little bit of a confidence booster bowling on the short pattern for me, Johnson said. I had a good shot and made good shots. There s a lot of games to go and it s all about team play right now to just get our feet going and see what happens. Heading into the final game, Dorin-Ballard was mathematically eliminated from gold medal contention but closed with a 279 game to edge Barnes, who finished ****************************************** FRIDAY NO-TAP Office: Fax: USBC Begins Research on Bowling Ball Entry & Exit Angles Study seeks to find out how modern bowling environment affects pin carry gles that bowling balls hit the pins affect a bowler s ability to strike. That alone, however, doesn t tell the whole story. USBC researchers now are venturing into new territory by examining what happens to pins when balls enter the pocket, roll through the pins and off the back of the pin deck. The other part of USBC s expanded research is to study how the modern bowling environment plays a part in pin carry. The combination of recent advancements in lane oiling machines, lane conditioners and cleaners, bowling balls, lane surfaces and player skill allows today s bowlers to create steep angles of entry into the pins, resulting in continued on page 9 Team USA Sweeps Singles Medals at PABCON Women s with 227. This is a great team, and for us to sweep the medals in the opening event is amazing, Dorin-Ballard said. This puts us off to a good start, but there s a lot of work left to be done. We ve all got our eyes on the team gold medal. Team USA s Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., just missed earning a medal, finishing seven pins behind Barnes with 1,441. Diandra Asbaty of Chicago totaled 1,338 and finished in 10th place, while Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., took 29th place with 1,254. Action next shifts to the doubles event Tuesday with Dorin-Ballard and Johnson pairing up for the morning squad. Kulick and Macpherson are together in the afternoon, and Barnes and Asbaty will take to the lanes in the evening. The 2008 PABCON Women s Championships features 16 countries from the American Zone competing in singles, doubles, trios, team, Masters and all-events. Jim won only 4 of the 8 matches, and Dave won all 8 of his matches. Their scores for the 8 games in the finals, were only 10 pins apart. The difference of this 69 pin victory over Dave, was the qualifying scores, Jim, 2359, and Dave, Another key to the victory for Jim, that he rolled a 299 In game #2 of the finals. Bedell off to the title game vs Ngheim Tran. The title game was now underway. Bedell led off with a strike but Tran answered with a turkey. Bedell opened in frame 3 and Tran then fired another double and now had a big five bagger. Bedell was in a hole with two opens. Tran coasted to the title in a 194/ /212 win. It couldn t go to a finer man. Ngheim is here every week and tries his best. He is a true supporter and true champion. It is nice to see him gain title #2. He is very deserving! He didn t wear his ABTA Shirt or would have had another $100 but he says $2,200 is fine with him. Great Bowling! Great bowling by Bedell who was bowling with his left hand in this one; he did very well! Also a great guy for sure. He got $500 for Las Vegas. Mitch Lesh bowled well in 3rd and his Mom Rhoda was on hand to watch as she hadn t seen him bowl for 14 yrs. He surely could have won this one as he performed so well. Eighty five men with averages ranging from several with 150 up to Maryland s Bobby Fuller s 206 and Californian Ed Abakumoff s 209 entered in this handicap double elimination event. The seniors, 55 years and older came from 23 States and Alberta, Canada. After the Wednesday s 4 games qualifying round, hometown bowler Sammy Sain led with for the event s high scratch 867plus 80 handicap 947 total. Followed by Larry Berke, AZ in 2nd place with ( ) 781 plus 144 hdcp 925 and Allan Sellman, MN in 3rd with ( ) 846 plus 76 hdcp 922. The eventual winner Mike Landry, Louisiana scored the tournament high game 250 in his 821 plus 84 hdcp 905 placing him 4th. Top average seniors Fuller and Abakumoff placed 20th and 29th with 861 and 846 respectively. Fuller had ( ) 849 plus 12 hdcp while two-time Deaf Team USA member Abakumoff s was ( ) 846 with no handicap. The low cut-off score for the 32 places match play was 838 by former Deaf Team USA member Joe Ed Thompson, TX with his ( ) 798 plus 40 hdcp. In the Thursday s all day one game match plays, 56 years old Landry in his first Deaf Seniors tournament and Abakumoff who lost in the 2006 title finals by one pin, were the only two, winning all their matches without a loss and faced each other in the 5th round. Abakumoff gave Landry his first loss 218 to 172, sending Landry into the loser bracket s semi-finals round. Abakumoff as 1st seed waited in the championship finals for the winner of the semi-finals match. Through the match plays, all including Sain, Berke, Sellman, Fuller and Thompson suffered two losses and were out. One dark horse, Jack Sickinger a 150 average Californian who qualified in 27th place with 850 won his first match and got his first loss in the 2nd round. Then Sickinger won four straight matches to move into the semi-finals against Landry and lost /207 to Landry s /225. In the title finals against the rested Abakumoff, Landry got even by jumping into lead with 4 strikes from 5th thru 8th, giving Abakumoff his first loss 225 to 188. Then in the Championship match while Abakumoff struggled with early two wide splits in 2nd and 5th frames, Landry again jumped with 4 strikes from 3rd to 6th frames and never looked back. Landry beat Abakumoff 235 to 159 for his first Deaf Seniors title. Landry averaged 206 plus for his 12 games. He will receive $ and Abakumoff $ in the mail. Jack Sickinger might get $220 and the rest of 32 will get their prize money all in the mail. Next week there will be the Singles and doubles results and also the senior women s elimination results. MALUCCI ROLLS 300/780 AT RED ROCK BOWLING CENTER IN LAS VEGAS LAS VEGAS During the Deaf Senior tournament I got the news from Melchora Lee that Carl Malucci who now works and bowl in Las Vegas, rolled a 300 game in the new bowling center at the Red Rock Hotel. I asked her about his series and got 780 from her also that Carl will come and tell me more. The following day Carl stopped by and gave me a copy of his team Team Nation results in the 7670 Sunday Mixers League at Red Rock Lanes. It showed Malucci at anchor of his foursome shooting games of for 780. So that is his 41st career 300 game. He said it was not pretty because he had three open frames, missing two 7 pins and a split. That hurt his chance of hitting 800 but that is bowling and that s the way it counted. Right now he is at 237 average. More important, let look at the team result sheet. Carl has Melchora Lee at leadoff, Joey Harris in 2nd sport and Barrett Lee as third man. In the first game they hit 910, a lofty score for a deaf 4 players mixed team (I have to check my records and report later). In this game Melchora had 213, Joey 248, Barrett 214 and Carl 235. In the next game the team dipped below 800 with a 793 but bounced back with 882 for a 2585 series. That is a big one for a deaf foursome mixed team, which I will look back to find one. In addition to Carl s 780 series, Melchora had 587, Joey 642 and Barrett 576. The team clicked well together and should enter in the USBC National Mixed Tournament. Hopefully Carl will report back to me with the team s better scores. Congratulations to him for his 41st 300. USBC continued from page 1 higher strike percentages as balls roll through the pins after impact. The aim of USBC s research is to find new ways to precisely measure how modern bowling balls rolled with different amounts of speed and hook enter and exit the pin deck and how those ball paths influence how pins fly upon impact. It s important that, in today s setting, USBC better understand what exactly happens when a bowling ball hits the pins from different positions and angles, said USBC Technical Director Steve Kloempken. We have never before studied a bowling ball s impact on the pins after it goes through and off the pin deck. In the big picture, this research is important because it impacts scoring levels in our sport. WINNETKA It was such a relief to hear the words, 100% contained regarding the recent fires. Thanks to the firemen who did a great job. And to all the families who have suffered losses, we extend our thoughts and prayers. I was hoping so after the two week break. Brent Shern is our star of the week with an even 800. His high game was 230. Jeremy Glover showed up with a rather disappointing 766 and 211 high game. Justin Gadaire followed with a 758 and 212 high game, and Keyon Lemus had a dismal 746 and 201 high game. I m using these terms only because I ve seen much better performances. One thing that I ve really noticed is that there seems to be more horseplay there than at any other center we stop at. I d like to think that you appreciate Bowl-O-Drome for its decent lane conditions and not for the large concourse space apparently suitable for chasing each other around. Since some of you play football, also, that can be pretty scary. Steven Alford shot 217, Austin Gadaire a 199, Claudell Redwine a 198 and Lawrence Merriweather a 190. Pepsi league qualifying starts in two weeks. Congratulations to Matthew Jones for making his first Farm Club cut at Palos Verdes, and John McCullin who came in 3rd. Shout out to Keyon for his 289! Did you make cut? I don t remember? Our next meeting will be at AMF Midtown Lanes in Los Angeles. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the center, it is not an easy shot. However, it hasn t been as hard as people have been touting. You can take Crenshaw north to Venice, right on Venice and right on San Vicente, or take the 110 North to 10 West, exit Crenshaw, right on Crenshaw, left on Venice. Did I mention cuts? I m going to start cutting those of you who can t seem to make it to league, or can t call. It was nice of you to join, but if you re not interested in the long haul, it just makes it difficult for the ones that do. It really makes me wonder how you re going to make it in adult leagues. See you at 1:30. SED Jr. Travel by David Gordon NORWALK Keystone Lanes played host to SED Jr. Travel last Saturday as we held our first double-session of the season. We were placed on the high side of Keystone and was treated to fresh oil for both sessions. Our thanks goes out to the management for the days accommodations. In the first session, we had a few break out with some excellent scoring. Max Slevcove started the day off with a near perfect 299 game. He later added a 232 for a 902 four-game series. J.D. Pelow put up scores of /888 while Mark Curtis had /810. That s the way to handle Keystone, gentlemen. Other high scores for the first set came in from Deanna Carrillo /772 and Brandyn Roque 224/744. Lastly, we had Kevin Jones pacing with us and he put up 269/822. In the second session, we added some incentive as yours truly got out his equipment for a little improv Beat the Coach. I was joined by parents Eleanor Mandzuch and Pete Slevcove to give some additional challenge to the juniors. The results will be posted next week after I reduce the requirements to win a patch and recuperate from my making it through FOUR games. The leader of this session (happen to be on my pair) was Pelow with /791. Right behind him was Curtis with /790. Up next and really going after that patch was Jon Morales with 211/783 and Roque 225/758. We also had Slevcove at 200/723 and Kim Ferdnance 207/718. This coming Saturday, we will be at AMF Valley View Lanes in Garden Grove. League rules will be handed out and tested on at a later date. Have a good laugh and a good week. I ll see you there. Presentations and Information Add Spark to Fall Bowling Classic RENO The bowling proprietors of northern and southern California celebrated their 14th annual meeting and trade show in the new Reno Event Center and Silver Legacy meeting areas. Meetings were preceded by a Bowl-a-Palooza at the National Bowling Stadium where trio teams bowled two games (with a house ball yet) while onlookers and fans enjoyed good food and the libation of their choice. Several took part in a Karaoke contest and some were pretty good! BPAA/USBC introduced Bowlopolis, which to me is one of the most exciting things to come along in a long time. The program will target the 6-13 year olds to be unified under the joint Bowlopolis Branding platform. The program has a story line of a typical young boy (Layne who has a dog named Reset), enthralled in his video game environment, forced out of his limited world on a mission to save his father (Mr. Kegler), who has been kidnapped by the nefarious King Pin. To accomplish this he must visit Bowlopolis and ultimately bowl King Pin to save his father. The story and animation was developed by Keith Alcorn who created Jimmy Neutron and it is interesting and clever. There will be several CD s that will tell the story and they will be distributed to the kids at places like Wendy s in each kid s meal and proprietors have the opportunity to by them en mass at only $38 per hundred. The focus is to Introduce more youth to experience the fun of bowling; Increase frequency of youth visits which means greater revenue and Convert more youth to organized programs increasing league participation. We got a sneak preview of the first two CD s and they were well done and definitely left you wanting more. This program will tie in with all kinds of activities and have four phases: Activation Kits, Branded Birthday Kits, Bowlers Ed in schools and on-line games. The entire program will be geared to get kids in bowling centers and teach them how to bowl eventually stirring them into youth leagues. There will even be a Bowlopolis membership card! BPAA s vision is to make our proprietors more profitable said BPAA President Jim Sturm who noted there were 18,000,000 young people out there and just 286,000 are youth bowlers. They want to grow the market and are willing to invest in doing this and carry it into retaining these bowlers through high school and into college. BPAA Secretary Candy DiSoccio heads the In-Center Youth Directors Program. The Skills Center is a contemporary bowler development tool and planned for centers is a Kiosk that takes the place of human interaction. Bowlers can order equipment, get information even including Pro tips Ṁembership is down 4-5% and open play is stagnant but BPAA membership grows. BPAA is helping state proprietors manage their organizations approximately 30 are under their wing now. BPAA has a great website template and will help or manage. They currently have 3400 centers. John Berglund spoke briefly on what proprietors could face with the current financial situation, impending election outcome, and the political environment in general. The newly organized Bowling Foundation will manage funds for BVL, Hall of Fame, Susan B. Komen and the Earl Anthony Scholarship. There are 2.6 million league bowlers and if the loss continues at 5% per year it means the loss of centers and valuable programs like Pepsi and SMART. BPAA is working hard to revitalize the base product and protect the competitive side of bowling. There are 65 million occasional bowlers and the aim is to get them into the centers more often. There are good things planned for the Test Center in Arlington, TX. The center has 20 lanes and is slated to be functional in days (November ) The lanes will have a variety of finishes and pin setting machines. Bowling balls and patterns will be tested and programs such as a management school, coaching and educational training will be offered. Amy Acurri gave a lengthy dissertation of the advantages of SYSCO, a purchasing program currently being used by 800 centers. She showed that street pricing is definitely NOT better than BPAA s price. SYSCO houses who provide supplies are consistently audited to insure what they pay for costs and that the mark-up to centers is consistent. BPAA meets with vendors continuously to negotiate good prices for member centers. They say the money saved through this program can pay for the proprietor s dues in BPAA. Frank DiSoccio who heads Strike Ten Entertainment told of a variety of promotions going on, Popcorn, Sara Lee, Budweiser, Miller Brewing and Coors, NASCAR, and are looking for good activation programs with sponsors. Highlighting the Trade Show were presentations by Bowling Proprietors of America (BPAA,) Southern California BPA, Max Brown on the Carrot Principle and Colleen Byrnes spoke on Going Green. Educational programs included Eric Martin Violence in the Workplace Are you and your employees prepared? Are you proactive instead of reactive? Kelly Bednar Youth Academy 101 designed to help youth directors get started with their youth program. Max Brown The Carrot Principal Getting Better Results from Your Employees show that you appreciate and value employees for their contributions, creating passion and performance. So-Cal President Scott Frager and pp Jason Altman held a seminar that promoted sharing ideas that work and allowed input from the attendees. One good idea was working with your centers to give a game of bowling to Halloween Trick or Treaters instead of candy! On the fun side was a Roast for past president Dennis Fanucchi lots of laughs and when Dennis finally got up to rebut everyone got up and left the room only to return with the old nose and horned rim glasses get up. Ted Hoffman Jr. emceed the events and wife Marilyn navigated the ever popular reverse drawing. Dennis Fanucchi and Hank Malatesta received and award of thanks from retiring president Stacy Allred for their help in planning and implementing the Trade Show each year. New Nor-Cal president Jim Decker, 111 was introduced. Thanks go to Brunswick, Qubica/AMF, The Lighting Store, Pepsi, National Bowling Stadium, Silver Legacy, Patton Vending, Western Bowling Proprietors Insurance, Herzog Insurance, Berry Cutler Hosiery, Bowling Industry and Nor-Cal Bowling Centers. The California Bowling Writers held their Fall interim meeting on October at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV. Following the meeting CBW hosted a booth at the Trade Show and offered their signature home baked cookies. They know who we are! On display were several binders with CBW history and memorabilia and the opportunity for people to donate to our 2009 Phone Card for the Troops charity. We brought home $300 plus to add to funds collected so far. I can t believe it but we got talked into getting up and doing Karaoke again. We had run into a fellow who made us believe we could be back up singers while he did the Celebration routine. Must be a lot of tin ears out there but people thought we did great. California Bowling Writers, formed in 1998, is open to all California bowling journalists, promoters and supporters of the sport of bowling. The purpose of the organization is to encourage and educate both members and non-members in communication through print, promotion and use of electronic media. CBW will recognize and reward those who create media awareness by providing outstanding bowling photography and journalistic excellence.
