FLORIDA STATE USBC WBA NEWSLETTER October 2017 Margo Buzzard, Editor SW 47 Terrace Miami, FL Greetings from your President Toni Maddux I know that everyone is glad that Irma has come and gone. As Irma made her way through the state and changed her path I thought of all the bowlers in those areas. I thought in particular how devastated the Greater Miami association would be if they lost their one center Bird Bowl. I know one center was destroyed in the Sebring area; how sad for that city and bowling, I have heard some centers had some damage but are still open. I prayed that our bowling business partners and our bowling family in Florida, the women, men, and youth would be safe and no lives would be lost. I know that many of you had extensive damage to your homes. I hope that you can get your lives back to normal real soon. Well we are down to the wire and as we work through the process of the State Merge for August 1st, 2018, I hope all women bowlers continue to support the Florida Women's State Bowling Association You can do this by paying the $2 state dues and continue to bowl in our tournaments. There seems to be a misconception that we won't have a women's tournament after the merge. There will always be a women's only state tournament as required by USBC just like in your local associations. Please spread the word to your league bowlers so they will continue to participate after the merge! The October 15th deadline is approaching for the Sr. Women's State tournament in Ft. Lauderdale on the East Coast. (The deadline has been extended to Oct. 22.) Entries can

be found on our State Website or from your local association presidents or managers. The tournament will be held the first 2 weekends in November. Once again you can pay your entry by using your credit card. The tournament is open to all women 50 and older. Mark your calendar! The election of the new Florida State USBC Board will be February 17th at 1:00pm in Lakeland. Remember to elect your voting delegates. All members are invited to attend but only elected delegates can vote. The Florida State Women's Championship entries are out so make plans to bowl. The tournament will be held in Ft. Lauderdale. Entries are available on our women's state website. Tournament opens May 5th and ends June 10th, Plan early and don't forget that you can use your credit card to enter. Congratulations to all our State Hall of Fame award and Pilar Cohalla award winners. All the ladies are very deserving to be recognized for their talents. Please see chairperson Dalia Keyes report in this edition for the names of the honorees! These women will be recognized May 18th in Ft. Lauderdale on Friday at the Women's State luncheon after the final annual meeting of the Women's State organization. I encourage each association to submit articles to Margo for the December Newsletter. We have recommended that the Newsletter continue with the new organization. That will only only happen if you support the Newsletter by submitting articles to support it. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Jamboree in a few weeks in Lakeland. Happy Halloween, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Next this is a little cheesy of an announcement but the inner child in me was thrilled to receive the FSUSBCWBA Publicity Award, 1 st place, 1 st time Venture, THANKS. National Women's 500 Club Were you there? Hope so. Did you miss it? Hope not. The National Women's 500 Club tournament held in Las Vegas is always a lot of fun and do you know who had the best time ever? The 12 th Annual Doubles 1 st place winners: Julie Upton & Edie Dooty and Singles Champion: Ester Farro and in all events, it was Lorre Ramirez. Be sure and MARK YOUR CALENDARS and join us next year for the 13th Annual Doubles & Singles Tournament, July 28 th & 29 th, Daytona Beach 500 Club Fun, Fun, Fun, what can I say, our 9-Pin No Tap Invitation was just plain Fun, and the bowling was out of sight, taking 1 st place was Lorrie Geiger with a 798, WOW Our next tournament is our 4 th Annual Liz Cocks Christmas Open Tournament on December 10, at 2pm, at Ormond Lanes, 260 US-1. Besides a great day of bowling, raffles, profit sharing and prizes, we are collecting nonperishable food and an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots to help make someone s holiday a little brighter. Space Coast USBC BA Charlotte Mateo We have finished the transition to merge two WBA s, a BA and a Youth association. We have accomplished quite a bit over that last few months by selecting the merged association name, the by-laws and a very competent and qualified Board of Directors. As of August 1 st, we completed elections, a proposed budget, hired an Association Manager (Charlotte Mateo) and have also announced our 1 st tournament as a new organization. The Open Tournament will be held December 2 nd & 3 rd at Harbour Center in Melbourne. We are looking forward to a great turnout.

At this time I want to introduce you to our new Officers and Directors so when you see them on the lanes, say hello!! They are: President: Angelo Cianfrocco, Vice President s: Alicia Mateo and Bob Nicolette, Director s: Dave Asquith, Jim Barrett, Chrissy Council, Mike Demole, Carol Douthett, Brian Klug, Doreen Mezzacappa, Darlene Nicolette, Linda Sprague, & Anna Wood. Youth Director s: Mary Cianfrocco, Dee Dee Cohen, Veronica Petrinee, & Randy Wheeler. If anyone were to tell you that merging is an easy process, they would be incorrect unless they have a wonderful group of people such as ours. These people are dedicated to the bowlers and the sport. They moved mountains to ensure that the transition was smooth as possible. I wish to thank them all for their wonderful strengths and their continued perseverance. This is going to be a real pleasure working with them. Believe me when I say that they are determined in everything they do and touch to make this organization the best it can be. We have a new awards program and by the time you read this article should be posted at all the centers we will be servicing. We are also working on a business card that will have all the upcoming tournaments and the months they will be held to be conveniently stored in your wallets for easy access. We will also post reminders on our website ( periodically throughout the season. So please look for those. We welcome anyone to join us at any one of our events. As of this publishing we have had (3) three 300 games shot (Cliff Cooper, Bobby Patterson & Scott Walters) and multiple games of 250 and up. With 26 leagues so far, you can expect that there will be a lot more high scores happening. We are continuing to raise money for our youth (High School Bowling) and will continue to assist anyway we can. We know there are some exceptional bowlers out there and we want to recognize them whenever possible. Our continued Bunko event has increased again. It seems the word is out for some food and fun!! This event does very well in raising money for our youth. September 30 was our first one of the season. We had 135 tickets purchased. What a great fundraiser for our Youth! If anyone would like some information on this event, please feel free to contact us at , we will be more than happy to share.

Ocala USBC WBA Debbie Whitten WOW where has the time gone. October already. First, I hope you and yours survived Hurricane Irma with little to no damage and that all your family and friends are safe and sound. To those that suffered a loss of any kind our deepest sympathies are extended to you and your family. Leagues were just getting on the lanes to start the league season when Hurricane Irma decided to make a visit and cause power outages and destruction in our little neck of the woods and throw all league schedules out the window. Some leagues were able to bowl on their designated day/night and some had to postpone and some have decided to cut the league short a week. Best laid plans of mice and men often go astray - and this is a good example of the mess that Hurricane Irma caused the Ocala/Marion County area. Most of the residents have started recovery and their daily routines are almost back to normal - whatever that might be. This has been a year of loss of several long time friends of the bowling community (bowlers) and of devastating news of health issues for others. Don t put off working on that bucket list or making amends with family or friends. Life is precious and all too short. Our general membership meeting was held on April 8, 2017, and a decent number of members turned out to participate in the approval of the By-Laws, election of officers and directors and election of delegates to represent the membership at the State meetings and the National Convention. The name of the new merged board is Marion County USBC. We now serve as one board to service the bowling needs of the men, women and youth bowlers of the Ocala/Marion County area. Elected were: Debbie Whitten President Steve Stahl 1 st Vice President Mary Cummings 2 nd Vice President Mike McKinney Sergeant-At-Arms Robin Sisto Director #1 (Youth Director) Helyn Hollenbeck Director #2 Tyson Kurth Director #3 (Youth Director) Lora Howard Director #4 (Youth Director) John Whitten Director #5

Joyce Rumbaugh Director #6 Tim Ballas Director #7 Jenny Mayhew Director #8 Cheryl Knox Director #9 Celeste Forsythe Director #10 Lisa Aeschliman Director #11 We have a busy season ahead of us with our local tournaments and hosting the Florida State Senior Tournament in January/February, We hope to see you in Ocala! We will be holding a special membership meeting in November to elect the delegates to attend the State General Membership Meeting in reference to their merger in February in Lakeland. That is a much bigger undertaking than our local association merger was and we wish all those involved a smooth transition from three boards into one board and that the changes that are necessary for that board to move forward are not met with resistance but with ideas and solutions. We have restructured our youth program and all youth bowling is taking place at one center this season. If we continue to grow possibly we can have youth leagues at both centers again someday. Awards, banquets and other things from the past are being discussed by the board to see what is viable to continue into the future and what services or programs have outlived their usefulness. Change is hard for all involved and we are striving to make the transitions from we did it this way... to we are doing it this way now. Everyone needs to have patience, ask questions if they do not understand and go to the source to get the correct information. Rumors hurt all involved, make for hard feelings where it is not necessary and only spread incorrect information. Don t be a party to fueling the fire - be the person that stops the fire from getting out of control and relays the correct information about the situation. Be the solution not the problem. Enjoy the upcoming holidays with family, friends, and families (those friends that are family) in whatever way you deem appropriate. We hope the is a successful one for all boards and bowlers.

Greater Miami USBC Sharon Colon Greetings from down South! We are feeling pretty lucky right now as we were spared from the devastating effects of Hurricane Irma. Yes, we had power outages and downed trees, but it could have been so much worse. Some of you in the Keys, on the west coast and in Puerto Rico were not so fortunate and we hope that you are able to bounce back quickly from the horrible wrath of Mother Nature. I know that when we were finally able to return to bowling, it brought back some sense of normalcy in our lives. With that said, we are looking forward to a great bowling season this year. Well, the lane inspections were completed and we have a schedule that will keep us on our toes, so it is onward and upward that we move. A list of all of our upcoming tournaments can be found on our web site, but here are just a few of the ones in the near future: Oct. 29 Bowl for the Cure Tournament, November 6 thru 11 Mail-O-Gram BVL League Tournament, and December 3 Adult/Youth Gold Qualifier Doubles Tournament. Please join us in the fun! Our 51 st Annual Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner is just a week away, at which time we will be honoring our newest Hall of Fame inductees and other bowling champions from last season. The two inductees are Shelley Goldstein in the Service category and Chris Szymanski in the Ability category. Shelley has served on our board of directors for many years and has always been so supportive of our leagues and tournaments along the way. Chris has been named our bowler of the year numerous times over the last ten years and has bowled a great number of 300 s and 800 s in his career. Congratulations to these two for a job well done. In addition to that we will be presenting our Bowlers of the Year: Ladies- Caitlin Graham, Men-Shane Nevers, Youth Male-Charlie Forero and Youth Female- Katrina Hernandez. All of these bowlers had numerous honor scores and are so deserving of this award. Near the end of last season, we hosted our very popular Seniors Tournament. The top five finishers in each category were: Open Handicap Singles (4 games) 1 s t - Israel Velasco- 1025, 2 nd - Larry Hopkins-1017, 3 rd tie between Rolando Medina and Arnold Ginsberg 1007 and 5 th Wilfredo Berrios Ladies Handicap Singles (3 games) 1 st Rosie Mendez -642, 2 nd Paula Gant 636, 3 rd tie between Ronnye Weisberg and Jackie Yaniz 611 and 5 th - Linda Reilly 607. Congrats to all the winners. Over the summer, Richard Rump was finally able to get a 300 game under his belt. He has been bowling for decades and holding a 200+ average for most of that time, but the perfect game kept eluding him. Well, now he can wear his ring with pride as he achieved this feat on one of the most difficult pairs in the house. Lanes 1 and 2 are notorious for playing differently and that night they were true to form. Rich said that one of them was hooking and the other ran straight so it kept him busy remembering which was which. It was a long time coming so enjoy the moment. We hope that you will bowl many more in the future. Our State Bowling Associations are finalizing the merger that will take place next year. For those that have attended and participated in meetings for this I would like to say

thank you and hope that all goes smoothly. When the time comes to choose the new officers and board of directors, vote wisely! As Breast Cancer Month begins please keep those afflicted with any type of cancer and their families in your prayers. I am sure all of us know someone who is presently fighting this horrible disease or living in fear that it will come back. Please God, let them find a permanent cure in our life time! In the meantime, please give generously to the cause. Until the next time, may all of the good scores be yours. Tallahassee USBC Lisa Tajdari Can you believe fall is here? The season has started and we have voted in our first female president. Congratulations to Minnie McNeil. Minnie has served on the board for over 5 years and her time and service have been greatly appreciated. Our previous president, Michael Fleischacker, has graciously taken over our youth program. So many new things are coming and I can t wait to share them with you throughout the season. On top of changing our leadership, our leagues continue to grow in size. Our Wool Insurance Trio league grew from 117 bowlers to 141. With it being a trio league, they filled up our 40 lane house. I m sure our proprietor is very happy. So as not to only report the league increase, some of our leagues have fell a little behind in their numbers from last year. Buster s Triple X, from 201 to 180 and Helbuster s, from 88 to 83. These numbers are expected to rise so we have no reason to alarm ourselves.

Some bowlers have gotten off to a roaring start. All high awards reported are from the Buster Triple X league. And the winners are: (Way to go!!) Series o George Tucker Series o Robert Julun o Calvin Ross o Terry Wilkinson o Timothy Williams Series o David Beck o Manny Costilla o Jerome Flanders, Sr o John Soeder, IV o William Tramel From the editors desk I hope everyone enjoys our newsletters. I m sorry that we didn t have as many submissions this time. This year may be the last of the newsletters unless the new association decides to continue it. Please make sure that you share this with your fellow bowlers and let them know that anyone can submit an article. All you have to do is it to: margob126@gmail.com. The deadline for the next one is Dec. 1, Hope to hear from you all soon.
