FLORIDA STATE USBC WBA NEWSLETTER February 2018 Margo Buzzard, Editor SW 47 Terrace Miami, FL Greetings from your President Toni Maddux Wow! Where is the time going? We just finished the Women's State Senior tournament in Broward County. The Broward County USBC board did a great job helping for the two weekends of the tournament. Thanks to all who worked to make it a success and congratulations to the winners. The final standings are posted on our state WBA website. Now the State Women's Championship tournament deadline is fast approaching. The final deadline is March 1st. Entries and information can be found on our website at The tournament will be held in the Broward County/Fort Lauderdale area. Katheryn and I met recently with the Broward County board to finalize everything for the 5 weekends of the tournament and our final annual meeting. The state transition committee met Jan. 13th to review everything for the organizational meeting of the new Florida State USBC Merged association. The meeting will be held in Lakeland at the Lakeland Center, Saturday, February 17, at 1 pm. All members are invited to attend but only elected delegates can vote. This will be an historical meeting for all the bowlers in Florida, Hope to see you there!

I will be attending the National USBC annual meeting and convention in Reno. Nevada this year, in April a long trip out west but well worth it when you get there, I always learn something new every year I go; the seminars are always great. I hope your association has someone to submit an article for this February Newsletter but if you don't please have someone write an article for the FINAL Newsletter in April. It would be great to have something from all of our associations and bowling clubs. Happy Valentine's Day, Happy Easter and Happy Passover to all. Florida 500 Club, Inc. Sadie Compton Who likes Guessing Games? Well I have one for you, how many members are there in the Florida 500 Club? Answer: 4,956, we only need 44 more to make it 5000, who wants to help us make it to 5000? And if you become a member you too can get in on all the fun, like the 29 th Annual Doubles & Singles Tournament, October 20 th and 21 st, 2018 in Lakeland at the Hyatt Place, where the Polk County 500 Club is planning a banquet with the theme from the Roarin 20's so grab your boa, for a roaring good time with us

National Women's 500 Club MARK YOUR CALENDARS and join us next year for the 13th Annual Doubles & Singles Tournament, July 28 th & 29 th, 2018 in Las Vegas, did you hear me? LAS VEGAS Daytona Beach 500 Club Thanks to all that brought food to our 4 th Annual Liz Cocks Christmas Food Drive, 9-Pin No-Tap Tournament, we were able to help 7 families donated to the Community Partnership for Children. Bowling an exciting 300 was Mike Nardandrea & for his efforts we gave him a pair of Superman glasses. 1 st place winner in the men's division was Tim McLaughlin and Penny Miller was our women's division winner. At our annual meeting our 2018 DB 500 Club Hall of Fame Award went to Susan Graziano. Our Doubles Champions are Bobbi Allman & Isabel Nichols. 1 st place Single 1 Divisions Panda Carlile, 2 nd Division Debby Benedict, 3 rd Division Sarah Kunerth.

FVL/BVL Maryann Adkins Happy Valentine s Day to all and hope you can be with that Special someone on this Heart filled day! I want to Thank all the associations that have sent in their FVL (BVL) funds this year, and of course some of these are very outstanding donations again this year! I want to remind the other associations that the deadline is March 1, in order to be included in the FVL report at our annual meeting in May. Please also send in your direct donation information, as these will also be included in the report. Again this year we will be recognizing associations with a certificate. THANK YOU for all your hard work and support of this worthwhile cause that benefits our 7 VA Hospitals here in Florida. Greater Miami USBC Sharon Colon Well, it is a new year and we are now in the second half of the season. We just finished our Women s City Tournament and our Youth City Tournament is taking place right now. Next week we will be running our Bowl for the Cure Mail-O-Gram event and next month we have our Open City Tournament. Things will be hopping right up until the Easter Bunny arrives and then maybe we can take a moment to breathe! For a recap of some of the tournaments held since our last newsletter, read on. In December we held the Don and Paula Carter Adult/Youth Tournament. It was a wonderful event and attracted a number of entries. The first four spots in each category are listed below:

14 years old and younger 15 years old and up 1 st G. Caro/C. Caro 1560 N. Mariscal, Jr./N. Mariscal, Sr nd E. Cheney/R. Cheney 1533 A. Osorio/C. Osorio rd A. Johnson/C. Johnson, Jr S. Barbara/C. Brewer th - J. Fernandez/A. Fernandez 1464 J. Mena/J. Fundora 1470 In a separate part of the tournament Kevin Monjarrez bowled a 659 series to qualify for the Jr. Gold entry spot. Great bowling by everyone!! Next we had the Women s City Tournament; however, the turnout was really disappointing. Those that did attend had a great time and lots of good competition. Our winners were: Handicap Doubles- Patricia Giraldo and Adriana Alvarez Scratch Doubles Yanette Shipp and Janeka Butler 1207 Handicap Singles Mireya Gomez Scratch Singles Graciela Dube 687 Hopefully we will find a way to convince more ladies to compete next year! We had a few honor scores bowled lately that included a 297 game by Sherry Cockfield and a 760 series by Caitlin Graham. The men were a little more productive with these nice scores. An 832 series (299, 278, 255) by Shane Nevers, first time ever 300 s by Scott Johnson and Richard Christie, a 300 by Kevin Morrissey, Sr. (bowling on the Irritable Bowl Syndrome team), and Luis Santana bowled a 7 count in the first frame followed by a strike in the remaining frames for a 277 game. Keep up the good work! Our goal of $10,000 for our Bowl for the Cure donation is well on its way to being accomplished. Right now we have about $8,000 and the Mail-O-Gram tournament next week will surely put us over the top. Thank you to all of our league bowlers for being so generous. Sadly though, one of our inspirations to push the cause, Gloria Guest, daughter-in-law of one of our board auxiliaries, passed away on Christmas Eve. What a tremendous loss this was for so many. We will continue pushing the cause in her memory and for all of our family members and friends who continue their fight against this abominable disease. We are looking forward to the Florida State Merger Meeting where our new board will be determined. We know that it will be a tough job this first year, but we are also confident that the newly elected group will lead us in an efficient manner. Good luck to all and congrats to those that will be voted in.

May all of you have a wonderful Easter and/or Passover celebration..and as always, may all of the good scores be yours. Marion County USBC Debbie Whitten Brrrr!!! I thought we lived in Sunny Florida... At any rate a little cool weather makes us appreciate the fact that we do live in Florida and do not endure as much cold weather as our neighbors in the North. The flu and pneumonia have hit the Marion County area hard and a lot of bowlers and board members have been down with these illnesses and we wish everyone a speedy recovery. The Marion County USBC Board has hosted the Florida State Senior Tournament for four weekends and have two to go at the time of this article. To date things have run smoothly for the most part. There will always be a pin down or a ball return call but those are minor in the scope of things. Next up for our local association will be the Open City Championship Tournament for two weekends followed by the Women s City Championship Tournament for one weekend and then... the board can breathe and take some time off. Nine weekends in the bowling center has been a test of the boards commitment to serving on the board which in turn serves the bowlers. Volunteers have helped cover for those that were unable to fulfil their areas due to sickness and a big THANK YOU to everyone for pitching in to help where needed. In a couple of weeks the general membership meeting for delegates will be held in Lakeland wherein the new state board of officers and directors will be elected,

state bylaws will be adopted and delegates to the national convention in 2019 will be elected. It will be a big change going from three separate associations to one and there will be bumps along the way; however, all the local associations and the bowlers in the State of Florida need to support the new State Board and give them a chance to move forward with the best interests of the bowlers in mind. Also please remember that comments on how we did it up North or out West or even in your local association are not what the new board needs to hear. Suggestions should be made if you see something you think can be improved; however, do not criticize unless you also have a solution to present. You can draw more flies with honey than with vinegar. Our thoughts and prayers to Larry Butler and his family for a speedy recovery from his recent heart issues. Thank you to the Florida State USBC Women s Bowling Association for their years of service to the women bowlers of the State of Florida. You have laid a foundation that should make the transition to one board an easier one for everyone. We also want to thank the Florida State USBC Bowling Association and the Florida State USBC Youth Association for their years of service to the men, women and youth of the State of Florida. You also have laid the groundwork of programs and services to make the move forward easier.

Greater Tampa USBC Dalia Keyes The Greater Tampa USBC Association has been busy getting ready for our women s city in February and our open city in March. Our entries are way down and we have tried to increase but this doesn t seem to happen. If anyone reading this has any suggestions, we would certainly like to hear from you. In November we held our annual BVL drive and I am pleased to say that we collected $ for our Veterans. Our bowlers were very generous this year and we thank them for their donations. We held our youth city tournament in December and awarded over $ in scholarship money to our youth. Our youth picnic, where we give out awards, was held January 28 th and we had over 125 people in attendance. The weather forecast was rain, but once again someone was looking over us as it started to rain on the way home from the picnic. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we had lots of food. I would like to thank our board members and volunteers who came out to help. The Greater Tampa USBC awards two $ scholarships to graduating seniors in our association each year. The deadline is May 1, 2018 so make sure to get those applications in on time. The Florida State USBC Youth also awards $ scholarships to high school graduating seniors, college students and trade/technical schools students. The deadline to submit applications is May 1, We are very proud of one of our youth director s, Kaitlyn Eder, who recently earned a spot on Junior Team USA as one of the top three bowlers to represent our country in international competition. Way to go Kaitlyn! Florida is also very lucky to have two other bowlers from our state also competing on Junior Team USA, Crystal Elliott and Pete Vergos. Congratulations to all three and know you will represent Florida well. The Florida State Youth Scholarship tournament is being held in Titusville and Melbourne and the deadline to enter is April 15, 2018 so get your entries in now.

I also want to give kudos to two of our board members who recently attended a coaching seminar at Kegel. Bill Walker received his bronze certification and Dan Hoagland received his silver certification. We are very proud of them. We also have 3 delegates ready to attend the organizational meeting for the Florida State USBC on February 17, They are looking forward to attending the meeting. Until next time, I hope everyone stays safe. From the editors desk Once again, I would like to thank all of our writers for their contributions to our newsletter. Remember any one can submit an article. Please share our newsletter with all of your fellow bowlers. I think that we get great information from all over the state and it should be seen by all! Our next issue is in April. Please get your articles in by April 1. Have a wonderful Valentine s Day!
