Arizona is not generally a place we think of when we think of fly fishing destinations (except for Lee s Ferry). However, high in the White Mountains lie dozens and dozens of lakes surrounded by Ponderosa pine forests and clear blue skies. The highlight of the trip was a day on Christmas Tree Lake. It s a limited access lake (20 people per day) on the Apache Indian Reservation featuring Apache Trout, a beautiful species found only in Arizona. Like any new water, it took a while to figure things out. With only one fish in the morning, I had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, especially the bald eagle flying overhead with a trout in its talons. It s a lake known for its dry fly fishing but on this day I didn t see anyone having much success on the surface and my offering was repeatedly refused. Adding a small mayfly nymph dropper brought in a fish or two. Thinking they might be eating a little deeper, I tried a couple flies under an indicator. I didn t give this technique it s full due by varying the depth and changing flies so I can t say for sure that it wouldn t have worked if explored fully because I heard someone say he used to fish where I was at with a lure and catch fish all day long and I thought maybe I should try stripping a streamer. I broke out the intermediate line and put on a Six Pack I had tied the night before and added a Copper Wire soft hackle off the bend (thanks Jun) and it was game on! After a dozen or so fish and several inquiries as to what I was using, I now know why it s called a Six Pack. Rumor has it that that s the bartering price for anyone wanting one on the water. The Six Pack brought in the most fish and the soft hackle brought in the largest fish (19 ). I like to catch fish as much as the next person, but I also like to try new venues and techniques. While it can be frustrating trying to figure out how to fish new water or use a new technique, it s all too easy to limit yourself to your favorite spots that you know well and use your favorite techniques that you know will produce some fish (at least most of the time). We offer a variety of classes and outings you can use to expand your horizons. We also have many, many members with a wide set of skills all too happy to share. And don t forget about our extensive library of books and videos. The easiest way to learn something new is to improve your casting. 2 2 TARGET TALK JULY 2013 It s Time for Greater Clarity DOUG SMITH, FLY TYING CHAIRMAN As the chairman of the LBCC Fly Tying Program I m proud to be a part of one of the best educational programs offered to fly tiers. We have a great classroom, superb instructors and helpers and a comprehensive list of flies that build on skills and knowledge acquired over 16 weeks. After so many years of offering this program free you would think that hardly any room exists for improvement. But there is one very obvious limitation: the poor clarity of the front room visual screen. In order to see the fly on the screen you have to turn the lights down. Tying a fly in the low light is not a good situation! It s time for us to improve. We need to add a large flat-screen TV at the front of the classroom. Our beginners fly tying class has been very successful for a long time and will continue to be so with this new and important teaching tool. In addition, the upgrades will benefit everyone at our monthly meetings. You shouldn t have to choose between seeing a speaker and watching the presentation on a clear screen. Recently, I was talking with past president Rick Hilles who recalled that we considered this 3 or 4 years ago but the cost was too high and we were still recovering from all the costs after the fire of After doing a little homework, it looks like we can upgrade to a 72 inch flat screen for about $4,000. I ve talked with our board and they endorsed the program to upgrade if the project team (me, Al Ross and Rick Hilles) can raise the funds. That s where you come in. If you would like to help, please let me (gulfkingfish@cox.net) know. If we can find 40 members in the club who are willing to donate $100 (or more) each, that will do it. The last time I asked anyone to make a donation was when my two daughters sold candy for their elementary school twenty-five years ago. His insight into fishing in the eastern Sierras kept everyone's attention. If you want to find out more information about fishing the eastern Sierras look David up. Bishop, CA 93514, ) and get those items you forgot to pack for your fishing trip. Our June speaker, Aaron Grabiel, hails from Redding, California. Born for the outdoors, Aaron has developed an incredible sense of the rivers in the area. Leading drift trips on the Lower Sacramento, Trinity, and Klamath Rivers, walking and wading trips on the Upper Sacramento and McCloud Rivers along with Hat Creek, his fishing skills are without question among the best in the area. I know I ve spoken the guys at the Fly Shop in Redding. We look forward to the tips, techniques and lore that Aaron will add to our personal storehouse of fishing knowledge. Our guest will be Mike Chapman, a member from the Fly Fishers of Orange County. Mike will be speaking about local waters and Mike is the guy to tell us where and how to get our fill of fly fishing right in our own back yard. His specialties are the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountain ranges along with surf fishing on Orange County beaches. What could be sweeter than that, our fill of fishing without having to fill our gas tank? Consider Trying Something New continued from page 1 intended spot (hopefully a rise) and presenting your offerings more naturally via better mending. In addition to our summer Tuesday night casts, we ll be offering a few casting clinics focused on mends and streamer casts. If you can t make the clinics, simply practicing your regular casts a couple times a week will pay big dividends in more fish and fewer injuries. Our outing this month is the Brookie Bash. It s a great opportunity to throw some dries but the multitude of nearby waters also presents a chance to swing some streamers or soft hackles, nymph without an indicator, or maybe try an indicator if you ve never used one. Spend a couple hours trying a new technique to enhance your skills. The ads claim there are hundreds of places to fish in the Mammoth area so venture out beyond the usual Hot Creek, Owens, and East Walker spots to try some new water. Yosemite is relatively close and offers some beautiful scenery, as do several creeks in the June Lake and Saddlebag areas. With the expected low flows this summer, many of the area lakes (including their inlets/outlets) may also offer a viable option, especially if you re willing to hike a short distance. So plan on trying something new this summer. Even if you end up not liking the new experience, it may enhance what you already know and improve your tried and true approach.

4 4 TARGET TALK JULY 2013 The Fifteenth Brookie Bash JEFF SADLER, PAST PRESIDENT Brookies, Rainbows, Browns, Cutts and yes, maybe Goldens a chance for The Sierra Grand Slam. Since 2007 only 14 of us have won this most prestigious award. You can be next with a little luck and perseverance. RULE: Catch all 5 species on this trip with the Brookie being caught in the Rock Creek drainage on Saturday. Brookies and Rookies were made for each other! Probably as close to a guarantee for catching trout that there is. An absolute guarantee for a lot of fun (unless you re a Brookie). Older (more experienced) members will assist the beginners until they too become Brookie bashers. Pre-Trip: Wednesday, July 10, 7:00 pm Lodging & Stuff: Chateau de Montagne in Mammoth. It generally is around $30 - $35 per night per person. But I will only get a condo if I have enough folks to mostly fill it to save cost. The problem is volume and mix. Volume is obvious but it s hard to fill rooms with king sized beds (holds two) with only guys (or gals). Also, the availability can be spotty so the sooner I know, the better arrangements we can make. I will honor 1 st come, 1 st reserved. I request $100 for Thursday-Friday-Saturday nights, $75 for Friday- Saturday and $35 for Saturday only. The only request I honor is cash or check made out to me, Jeff Sadler. A Brookie Bash Primer JEFF SADLER, PAST PRESIDENT So, how do I catch the 5 challenge trout? Well, here s the way Danny Rivett and I (and a lot of other folks) do it Brook Trout: Must be caught on Rock Creek drainage on Saturday. Brookie Basher fly rules. Golden Trout: We turn off 395 on our way north at either 9 Mile Canyon just north of Pearsonville toward Kennedy Meadows and fish the south fork of the Kern, or left on Lubken Canyon just south of Lone Pine then left on Horseshoe Meadows Road toward Horseshoe Meadows. I prefer Horseshoe Meadows but they both work. Small dry flies, small but incredibly beautiful fish. Goldens have also been caught at Chickenfoot Lake and Serene Lake on Rock Creek and the Saddleback Lakes loop. There are other places. Cutthroat: Generally early (8:00 am) on McLeod Lake about a 20 minute hike from Horseshoe Lake in the Mammoth Lakes area. Mostly dry attractor patterns but last year it was soft hackles. Browns and Rainbows: Everywhere: Upper/ lower Owens, Hot Creek, Bishop Creek, any lake, etc., etc.

MICK WOODBURY, PAST PRESIDENT AND HOST It s Yards and Inches time again where in just one morning you can earn a whole year of bragging rights, get your name added to a perpetual trophy; and enjoy home-made posole, chips and cold beer at the noon "add in" (as opposed to weigh in...). Plan now to join the Fleet on Saturday, August 24 th to pursue spotted bay bass, sand bass, various croakers, halibut, mackerel, perch, etc. With a 4ft. +/- tide coming in through the entire morning there will be an extended prime catching window! Rule em and return em Y&I rules are simple. Measure the length of all sport fish you catch (no sharks or rays; fly rods and flies only; no bait) and keep a running total of the length of all fish caught. Highest total length wins. All fish are released to grow bigger for next year. Last year 13 fisherpersons caught a total 522 inches of fish that s 14 and-a-half yards! Winner Kevin Green three-peated with a total of inches! Incidentally, Kevin not only logs each caught fish, he photographs them too. Second and third finishers both scored over 70-inches. Fish don t have to be heavy; think lots and think looooong When and where Launch time is at 6-ish (low tide is at 5:55) and fish till noon (high tide is 12:32). The location is Huntington Harbour, just inside the PCH bridge. Posole is served at the launch spot. Whatever floats You ll need to fish from something floatable like small boats, kayaks, pontoon boats, dinghies or float tubes. For float tubers, there are hundreds of boat docks to fish where you won t have to fight current or tides. You can rent kayaks along PCH. They normally open at 8:00 am, but they typically will let you rent them the night before so you can start fishing early. The Pre-Trip is at the clubhouse on Wednesday, August 14th at 7:00 pm. You ll learn everything you need to know: maps, launch sites, lure du jour and the lunch spot. To be considered a competitor must complete a minimum of three scores that event in at least one event. 8 8 TARGET TALK JULY 2013 Fly of the Month: Dave Cox s Delta JOHN VAN DERHOOF, EDITOR remember the day like it was yesterday. It was a bright, warm summer morning without a cloud to seen I anywhere. The headlands above Dana Point were visible about two miles in the distance. I was being teased unmercifully by Harry Kime, my fishing partner that day, for not taking anything to prevent what I was feeling now as we bobbed along on the swells. I hate when that happens. A few hundred yards in the distance an eruption of white water and diving birds magically appeared. Harry spun the boat around and we flew over to the activity. It was a school of 10 to 20 pound yellowfin tuna covering an area about the size of a football field enjoying a late breakfast of anchovies. Harry immediately had the boat out of gear and as we drifted along the edge of the school we frantically were grabbed rods and cast into the melee. We both hooked up instantly and spent the next two hours following the school, catching and fighting fish the whole way before they slipped below the surface. I used only one fly pattern that day Dave Cox s Delta. Developed for stripers in the Colorado River and Lake Mead the Delta is durable, easy to cast and works just about anywhere you would want to use a baitfish imitation. The secret to the Delta, and the reason for its name, is the wide flair of the wing. This is the result of winding down the wing against a large diameter body. The original fly tied by Dave used mylar pipe cleaners. The wire added weight but would rust out quickly in saltwater. I quickly switched to using a 5-minute epoxy body and now find hot glue even better. Tie the Delta in any color you would consider using to match a baitfish or just to create as an attractor. Here are some of the popular combinations and I have marked (*) some of my favorites: *all white, all yellow, all red, all black, *dark green/white, *green/yellow, red/white, *red/yellow, black/white, *blue/white, *purple/ blue, *dark green/green/white, *green/yellow/white, *blue/green/white. The Delta is a great pattern to have along and the wing flaring technique is valuable for a wide range fly types. Materials for tying the Delta: Hook: Mustad 3407, (stainless steel) or equivalent in sizes from 6 to 4/0. Thread: Flymaster Plus in white or other color that blends with the fly. Body: 1/8 to 3/8 diameter hot glue ball at the mid-point of the shank. Tail: Krystal Flash in a color to match the fly. Gills: Red rabbit skin. Wing: Pugisi Sea Fibers or other similar synthetic, translucent hair or bucktail. Head: Eyes: Tapered thread wraps covered with Krystal Flash in a color to match the fly. Doll eyes, 3mm to 9mm diameter depending on the size of the fly, glued to the hot glue ball on the shank.

9 TARGET TALK JULY Instructions for tying the Delta: 1 To start tying this pattern begin by getting out your glue gun, plugging it in a safe location and allow it to heat up. Place the hook in the jaws of a pair of hemostats and apply a small amount of hot glue to the shank over a safe surface. Turn the hook while the glue cools and sets to keep from allowing the glue to sag too much to one side. Apply more glue as a second or third coat until you achieve the diameter you want. The glue should be slightly forward of the mid-point of the shank on a Mustad or Tiemco 811S hook and at the mid-point of the shank on shorter hooks such as the Tiemco 800S and the Eagle Claw Now place the hook in your vise and attach the thread behind the hot glue ball and wind down to the bend of the hook. Tie in a clump of about 20 to 30 strands of Krystal Flash for the tail. The tail should be about twice the length of the hook. Wind back to the hot glue ball and tie in another 3 or 4 strands of Krystal Flash. Wind the Krystal Flash to the tail and back and tie off. Cut off 2 small triangles of dyed red rabbit skin and tie in one on either side of the hook. Whip finish next to the hot glue ball and apply a drop of head cement on the thread and the Krystal Flash but not the rabbit. 3 Re-attach the thread at the headspace and wind to the hot glue ball and back forming a secure base. For this instruction we will be tying a 3-color wing. The tying order for a 3-color wing is as follows: 1) top, 2) far side, 3) bottom, and 4) near side. Remember that the sides are the same color. For a 2-color wing the order would be: 1) top, 2) far side to bottom, 3) and bottom to near side. Select a pencil diameter s worth of your top wing material and lay onto the top, near side of the hook shank and as you wind allow the thread tension to pull and fan the material equally to the other side. With about ½ to ¹ ³ the amount of the material apply the side color starting where the top ended and using thread tension to fan it slightly. Using the same amount of material as the top apply the bottom color starting where the side ends and fanning around the under side of the hook to the same point on the near side of the hook. Add the near side in the same fashion as the others. Inspect the wing from all angles to make sure that all the color sections are where they are supposed to be don t let the top color slop over too much to one side or the other. Use your thumbnail to push sections of wing that are too dense or lopsided to where they need to be. Watch out for the hook point! 4 Start smoothly winding the thread to form a neat, tapered head. As you wind farther down the shank towards the hot glue ball you will notice that the wing will flair more and more outward. With the head formed tie in 2 or 3 strands of Krystal Flash right behind the eye of the hook and wind them to the end of the head and back and tie off. Whipfinish the head and apply head cement. 5 Prepare the doll eyes for gluing by scratching the backside with a sharp knife blade. Apply glue from the hot glue gun on top of the hot glue ball and be sure to work it into the wing along the side of the hook. Place the eyes onto the hot glue and let them set. The Delta is now ready for action. The pond looks great thanks to you guys. The next cleaning is scheduled for July 20th. Come on out and help your fellow club members work on the pond and also (if we get enough people) cleaning the clubhouse.
