As a result, the cycle of events starts all over again beginning with your newly elected Board of Directors. Bill Boehlert will assume the role of Senior Director offering wisdom and continuity. Rich Garrett has graciously offered to circle back and fill the role of Junior Director being as I m renewing as President so there is no past president to move into the Junior Director role. Pablo Grabriel, formerly our Membership Secretary, has been elected to the 1 st Vice President position where he ll arrange for meeting speakers and run the meetings (as well as the Venison Stag). Rix Gano enjoyed coordinating the outings so much as 2 nd Vice President he has agreed to do it again. We have 3 new board members, including Craig Bond as Corresponding Secretary, Michael Fleder will handle Membership, and Tony Smith will keep track of the finances as treasurer. We re still searching for a Casting Captain so if you re interested please contact me. I would like to thank all of the above for offering their time and energy to help keep our club running smoothly. Leaving the Board will be Joe Austin, Dan Rivett, and Joe Gustaff. Many thanks go to them for the time and effort they ve invested over the last several years to keep our records, casting, and finances in order. Looking back over the previous year reveals an impressive list of activities available at the club. If you re not growing as a Fly Fisher, it s not for lack of opportunity. The following are a few of the highlights from another wonderful year. Our club trips continued to grow as the diversity of outings expanded. The Lower Owens has proven to be so popular we held 3 trips, each preceded by a How To workshop. Other traditional trips were also well attended, including the Green River, Little Lakes Valley (Brooke Bash) and Huntington Harbor (Yards & Inches). We also ventured to San Diego Bay, the Kern River, the West Fork, and a new trip to Cottonwood Lakes. Many of the trips also had pre-trip fly tying sessions to better prepare us. The Southwest Tournament went off without a hitch, thanks to the efforts of Mark Tsunawaki, Frank Kropacek and a host of LBCC volunteers. In addition to our annual tournament, we held numerous club casts. While attendance has been down lately at our club casts we re looking to perk things up next year. Our own classes continue to provide tremendous Leader s Line continues on page 3

2 2 TARGET TALK MAY 2013 Gartside on the Royal Wulff JOHN VAN DERHOOF, EDITOR With the fly tying class over, we no longer have to listen to Jeff Sadler extol the virtues of the Royal Wulff. I enjoy teasing Jeff about his passion for this fantastic fly out of jealousy I wish I had gotten there first when it comes to being an advocate for the Royal and not him. The first fly I ever saw tied was a Royal Wulff and it was being tied by Lee Wulff himself and tied in his typical fashion in hand, sans vise. Sooooo, now that my secret is out, here s a little bit wisdom from one of the most deserving, yet lesser known masters of the fly tying and fly fishing world, Jack Gartside ( ). Jack was considered to be one of the most talented and innovative fly tiers of the modern era and was taught how to tie flies by none other than Ted Williams. Here is Jack s view of the Royal Wulff: One of my favorite un-provable theories is that fish, like people, will often see what they want to see at the moment of their desiring. At this time they may ignore distracting or otherwise disturbing elements that do not quite fit the image they have of their heart s or stomach s desiring. As an example, a trout looking to take a natural mayfly dun off the surface will often take a Royal Wulff and here we must be presumptuous because the general shape or outline of the fly is suggestive of this insect and corresponds with what has been called the fish s search image. According to this theory, the trout will ignore the severely segmented body of peacock herl and floss, which is more like the body of an ant than of a mayfly. When ants are on the water, on the other hand, the trout will now focus on the segmented body parts of the Royal Wulff and ignore the parts that suggest the mayfly. It is this combination of disparate, coexisting parts with the potential to be more than just the sum of its parts that makes the Royal Wulff such a generally effective dry fly pattern. Or so I believe. 3 TARGET TALK MAY Secrets for Success in the Eastern Sierra with David D Beaupre JIM THOMASON, PRESIDENT Join us this month as we visit the club s most popular destination and hear about the Secrets for Success in the Eastern Sierra presented by guide David D Beaupre. Fly fishing since the age of 7 and guiding for 17 years, David has fished or guided in Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Canada, Mexico, Belize, Patagonia, and Honduras. He has spent the last 5 years guiding in the Sierra s. David is the owner of Sierra Trout Magnet Fly Shop and Guide Service in Bishop. Since arriving in Bishop, in addition to guiding and fishing the well known waters of Hot Creek, the Owens River, and the East Walker, he has relentlessly explored many other waters found there from seasonal trickles, canals, and ponds to tributaries, lakes, and reservoirs looking for places to take his clients fishing off the beaten path. This has provided him with a very unique perspective on the area. If you re a regular in the Eastern Sierra s come see what you might be missing. If you re new to fly fishing and haven t been there yet, this will be a great way to get started there and shorten your learning curve. David s unbridled enthusiasm for fishing and sharing his knowledge promises to make for a rewarding presentation. The meeting is Thursday, May 30 th at 7:00 pm at the Long Beach Casting Club Clubhouse. New Year, Old Year Leader s Line continued from page 1 fly fishing education to our members and the general public. Fly casting, fly tying, rod building and our On The River classes attract new members as well as teaching continuing ones. I would like to thank Gary Charles, Larry Berg, Doug Smith, Al Ross, and Joe Libeu for running such wonderful programs. We also had Spey and double haul clinics, an entomology class, and several specialty fly tying sessions. The nooner crew continued to provide education, entertainment and great lunches as evidenced by the large number of members willing to sneak out of work (or chores) to get to the clubhouse during the day. Led by George Sieward and Dale Day, they have added a whole new aspect to the club. It is impossible to list all our events and activities here, or to properly thank all the people that make them a reality. I sincerely thank all our members who work so hard to make LBCC the great club it is. It was so much fun I m going to do it again.

5 TARGET TALK MAY El Segundo Surf Fish Outing BOB MIDDO, MEMBER It s time to dust off your shooting heads and running lines folks, we re going where only gremmies and long boarders dare to tread. It s time for some surf fishing in the South Bay. Rips; Troughs; Holes; you name it. We will be on the hunt for Barred Surf Perch, Yellow Fin Croaker, Corbina and possibly Halibut. We will be fishing the stretch of beach at the Grand Avenue parking lot in El Segundo, just south of Dockweiler Beach on Saturday, May 11, This stretch of beach has produced huge Barred Surf Perch, Corbina and Yellow Fin Croaker, plus an exotic or two this year. With spring weather, optimal tides and a predicted Grunion run that weekend, who knows what we may catch. Suggested rigs include 5 to 7 weight rods, using the appropriate weight T-8 or similar shooting heads. An integrated line with a sink 4 to sink 6 head of at least 24 feet will work fine as well. Flies, flies, flies. Clousers, Gremmies, Surf Rats, Solly Clousers, Beaks, Surf Merkins, etc. Bring them all, in all different sizes, colors and weights. Never know what they are hungry for. A Pre-Trip Meeting on May 1 st at 7:00 pm will cover what you may want to bring and answer any questions you may have. The Grand Avenue parking lot is off of Vista Del Mar, just south of Imperial Highway. It is pay parking ($3.00), but there is a parking voucher machine onsite, it only takes credit cards though. You can probably wet wade then, but I would suggest waders and a water proof jacket. A stripping basket and safety glasses are a definite must. We will be meeting in the parking lot at 6:00 am and hopefully on the water by 6:30 am. Hope to see you there. Deep Creek Trip PAUL BURGNER, TRIP HOST The upcoming May trip is scheduled on May 25 th to Deep Creek and will be hosted by Paul Burgner. The Pre-Trip Meeting is scheduled to be held on May 14 th. Deep Creek is considered one of the premier wild trout streams in Southern California. It has, by Southern California s standard, a large population of browns and rainbows. 6 6 TARGET TALK MAY 2013 Tyee Fishing Old School DALE DAY, MEMBER Oar blades dip into the water in a smooth quiet rhythm that matches the early morning solitude. There is a glow of light starting to peek over the coastal range indicating that sunrise is on its way to Southern British Columbia. Roderick Haig-Brown wrote about and fished these waters. Kenny Enns, his god son, is rowing us in a traditional twelve foot wooden dory in the salt at the mouth of Campbell River. This method of fishing for Tyee was brought to this area by Scottish immigrants some eighty years ago. This is our third morning of fishing with a red and white painted wooden plug with a single hook and a Hardy Silex reel loaded with monofilament mounted on a ten foot fly rod. The rod tip moves with the pulse of the plug that matches the speed of the dory. We have seen fish every morning but we have not hooked up. The tension builds each time a Tyee rolls beside or behind the boat. I started to hold my breath for extended periods of time in anticipation of a take but I soon realize breathing is part of fishing so I exhale. Tyee is the indigenous term for the Chinook salmon. The goal is to land a thirty pound fish using the prescribed traditional Scottish methods so one can be honored with being admitted to the Tyee Club. We have been fishing for nearly two hours so we make the decision to row for the dock, eat breakfast, take a nap and resume fishing in the afternoon. The line is still in the water as we organize our gear. The rod tip is starting to bend and we thought the plug had snagged the bottom but now the reel is starting to spin with increasing speed. Still thinking that we are hung up I pick the rod up and start to reel up on the snag. Then I hold the spool handle and pull up on the rod. This action sets off the line being taken off the reel at an alarming rate. We still think we are hung up but within a half second the though occurs to both of us that there is a fish on. Now the fish is pulling the dory through the water and Kenny is trying to keep the bow pointed at the fish. Our attention goes from nap time level to full on adrenaline rush. We talk about various strategies to land the fish, which includes not being taken north by the tide to Seymour Narrows were the tidal current runs at fourteen miles an hour. The goal is to keep the fish in the Campbell River Estuary. The fight is half way between a rodeo event and sculling race. The fish first heads north and I change the angle of the rod trying to turn the fish s head. Now the fish has changed direction westward toward the mouth of the river. Kenny is crabbing the boat so the fish has to pull more surface area through the water. We have covered about a half a mile from where the fish was hooked. Finally after twenty minutes of hanging on we are gaining line on the fish. First I reel and then palm the spool to hold the fish. Again and again I reel and palm finally the fish comes

7 TARGET TALK MAY to the surface thirty feet behind the boat. Raise the rod and reel, raise the rod and reel, the fish is now ten feet from the boat. We start discussing how and on which side of the boat we are going to land the fish. Momentarily, the fish rolls on its side like it is exhausted but then turns its head and runs seventy to eighty feet up the Campbell River. Now the rowing becomes more difficult against the rivers current. The line starts to go slack and Kenny starts to row back down stream and I reel line in as quickly as possible. There is a sinking feeling the fish got the best of us on this last move but then the line tightens as the fish passes us going back down stream to the ocean. I am beginning to speculate on how much longer the hook can stay in the fish with all the angle changes plus when the line went slack. We catch up to the fish again and it surfaces five feet from the stern and we repeat the drill and this time the fish swims into the net. The mandatory measurements were taken for the Tyee Award. Then I held the fish against the hull while Kenny rowed for several more minutes so we could revive it. Then after a few strong strokes of its tail the fish swam free. We change seats so Kenny can rest and I rowed back to the dock. Breakfast was especially good that morning. Later that summer Kenny guided his girl friend to land the largest Tyee of the year. The fish weighed sixtytwo pounds. She became the British Columbia Tyee fisher person of the year and Kenny was awarded the Tyee guide of the year. Their prize was two Air Canada tickets to travel anywhere in the world so they went fishing in New Zealand that winter. Successful Spey Demo Event DALE DAY, MEMBER The Long Beach Casting Club was the host to Gene Oswald, American Airlines captain, from Lakewood, Washington. He brought twenty-one Bruce and Walker Spey rods with their appropriate reels and lines for club members to use. The pond was beaten to a veritable froth by more than thirty beginning to advanced Spey casters. Assisting in the event were Jim Ansite, Mike Ivy, Dave Ross and Al Ward. The record of how many Spey casters that can use the pond at one time was officially set at seventeen. Dave Ross, Howard Uller and Al Ward received their new Spey rods fresh off the British Airways flight from Scotland. These lads were so happy with their new gear that they couldn t sleep that night. It is rumored that Gene sent a trademark cast of one hundred seventy-five feet to the delight of all. There was a lot of sharing of lines, rods and casting technique advice. The excitement about the day s event is still a topic of conversation around the club house. There was a true spirit of sharing with every one that attended the event. Gene has offered to return in the fall to the club for more instruction and casting demonstrations. Every one that attended the Spey event would like to thank Gene Oswald for sharing his expertise with members of the Long Beach Casting Club.

8 8 TARGET TALK MAY 2013 Fly of the Month: Schroeder s Parachute Hopper JOHN VAN DERHOOF, EDITOR There is an old fly fishing adage states that the larger the fish the smaller rise. While it is obviously not always true it certainly seems to be the case most of the time. I have noticed it while fishing topwater for bass with hair bugs and especially while fishing for trout with hoppers. With hopper fishing it's always the little ones, those barely larger than the fly itself, that launch themselves through the surface trying to get their tiny mouths around their perceived meal. Meanwhile, the local toughs sip in the fly so quietly that you barely notice it. Years ago, while fishing the Wood River in Oregon, I had the epitome of a bad day. Here the river paralleled an agricultural field with a dirt road immediately next to its bank. As farm trucks ran up and down, the road the grasshoppers tried to fly out of the way only to be caught by the afternoon wind and blown right into the river. You could quite literally watch the rise forms follow the trucks up and down the river as trout, many of which exceeded 10 pounds, fed on the hapless insects. As I fished the rise forms were so subtle that I missed fish after fish. Oh, the pain! A few years ago I became reacquainted with hopper fishing on a small stream in northeastern Utah yes many of you who frequently go to fish the Green River will know what stream I am talking about. A little smaller than Hot Creek, this oasis in the desert was filled with 14 to 20 rainbows, browns and cutthroats. On a late summer afternoon the one fly that they seemed to crave was Ed Schroeder s Parachute Hopper. Ed s pattern is an excellent, low profile, slower water hopper imitation that is relatively easy to tie. Be sure to tie it in several sizes and in more than one color. One final piece of advice keep your eyes peeled. Materials for tying Schroeder s Parachute Hopper: Hook: Mustad 9671 or Tiemco 2302 in sizes 8,10 & 12 Thread: Primrose 6/0 or 8/0 Post Wing: White goat body hair or calftail tied short Body: Pale yellow dubbing is standard but also try tan and pale green Downwing: Oak mottled turkey tied tent style Legs: Brown turkey tail or ringneck pheasant tail glued and knotted Hackle: Grizzly tied parachute style Thorax: Dubbing to match body Head: Match thread color

9 TARGET TALK MAY Instructions for tying Schroeder s Parachute Hopper: 1 Start by cutting off two ¼ to ³/8 wide sections of turkey or pheasant tail for the legs. Apply a generous amount of head cement or Dave s Flexament (my preference) and stroke it into the fibers and set it aside to dry. Repeat this process for the other section. 2 Place the hook in the vise and attach the thread to the hook at a spot over the point of the barb. Wind forward to the headspace with smooth tight wraps. Cut off a clump of goat body hair that is about ½ to ¾ the diameter of a pencil. Knock out all of the short fibers and fluff, place in a hair stacker and align the tips. Tie in the wing with the tips forward, stand it up when secured and post it with a couple of turns of thread. As this wing is only for the parachute hackle it should relatively short no more than the gap of the hook. the sections on either side of the body. The knot should be higher than the tented wing and the tip should extend to the end of the wing. 5 Apply a small amount of dubbing to the thread and wind this to a point immediately behind the wing. Select a hackle whose barbs are about 1 ½ times the width of the hook gap. Tie in the hackle insuring that a small section of bare stem is exposed. This will help keep the barbs from going in all the wrong directions when you start winding. Wind the hackle by starting the first turn a little high on the wing and spiraling down to the body using about 4 to 6 turns and tie it off securely behind the wing. 6 Dub the reaming section of the body to the headspace, form a small, neat head and whip finish. Apply cement to the head and go fishin. 3 Wind back down to where the thread was attached and apply dubbing to the thread. The body needs to be a little thicker than the normal dry fly so be sure to apply more than the normal amount of dubbing to the thread. Wind the dubbing onto the hook about ¾ of the way up the shank. Cut a ½ wide section of oak mottled turkey quill that will be used for the down wing. Trim the tips of the section so that it is pointed in the middle. Using the loose loop technique tie the wing section in over the body like a tent and extending to the bend of the hook. 4 Select the now dry sections for the legs. Tie an over-hand knot near the tip end of the section. The portion from the knot to the tip should be ¹/3 to ½ the length of the section from the knot to the butt. With both sections knotted tie in one of

In addition to those games we hosted the 2013 Southwestern Tournament. Thank you to all of the casters that came out to compete and improve their casting and fishing skills. I extend a special thanks to all of you that volunteered to help with the casts and tournament. I have enjoyed being the Casting Captain again this year.
