MAY SPEAKER RICH BEAN Imitating The Worm This Months topic is Imitating the Worm, a show about tying and fishing imitations of the most popular bass lure ever made. A quick biographical background on our speaker Richard Bean, shows a lifetime of writing for some of the finest books and magazines we all enjoy reading. Richard & Barbara Bean are family members of Deep Creek Flyfishers and Richard is a full-time freelance outdoor writer. His credits include articles in California Fly Fisher, Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Fly Fisherman, Fly Fish America, and Southwest Fly Fisher, as well as a number of conventional tackle magazines, including, but not limited to, Aqua-Field Publications, Bass master, Basin Magazine, Bass West, Angler, Game & Fish, Black Bass Journal, California Game & Fish, and others too numerous to mention. He also is the Warm Water Columnist for California Fly Fisher Volume 25 Issue 5 May 2008 Magazine. He is managing editor of California Bucks, and California Hog Hunter. While he writes on a number of subjects, including hunting, both big game and upland birds, plus all kinds of fishing, he prefers fly fishing, primarily for warm water species, and is a long time fly tier and rod builder. In 2002 his book, Fly Fishing Southern California s Lakes & Streams was published by Aguabonita Books, and his new book Fly-Fishing For Bass in the West, is now available from the author. Prior to getting into the outdoor field, Richard was an automotive magazine editor. He wrote about high performance hot rods, racing cars and motorcycles, plus soft-cover books on automotive and motorcycle tune-ups, citizens band radio (remember them?), and was co-author of a correspondence course on motorcycle maintenance. So come and join us at this months meeting on May 28 th, to hear one of the most interesting speakers we have had to date, someone you could spend all evening talking to on any subject subject you have. Remember, this months Barbecue and White Elephant sale will be held before the meeting, see flyer on page 6, so please help out and bring a white elephant donation to the meeting. Everyone will benefit from this fun fundraising event. Ron Bishop VP Deep Creek Fly Fishers

PRESIDENT S CORNER MAY MESSAGE The 2008 fishing year is now well under way and I hope everyone has had an opportunity to get out on some of their favorite waters and enjoy the outdoors and the fishing. It is always wise to check over the new fishing regulations before going out on the water, as there are always some changes which can affect a trip on the water by a surprise visit of the game warden (when they show up, it always seems to be a surprise). The Opener at Mammoth Lakes was one of the best attended in recent memory. Thanks to Mike Telles for organizing the trip. We had filled four condos this year with Deep Creek members. The weather was some of the best we have had for an Opener with no rain or snow. The fishing, however, was a little slower than most Openers. This doesn t mean we didn t catch fish, heck, even Ray Moon and John Halcomb caught fish. Crowley Lake fished a little slower than many of us would have liked, and we had a bit of wind to contend with from time to time (not an unusual event in the Eastern Sierra). We had a special treat one night when we had Mike Morrison, the Department of Fish and Game Biologist for the eastern Sierra area down to our area, including Deep Creek, as our guest for dinner. I was shocked to witness some of our members grill him extensively about secret places to fish and the quality of the fishing in certain areas. Nevertheless, I did obtain some insight into future fishing prospects. Chef Bill Reeves outdid himself with his culinary preparations with steak two nights! Regardless of the wind, and the slow fishing, I think everyone who made the trip had a good time. Remember that this month we have our annual White Elephant sale and Barbeque thanks again to Bob Krieder. Be sure to check this newsletter for the particulars on time and what to bring for the White Elephant auction. We usually have the May meeting earlier than the usual 700 PM. This has always been a fun meeting for members with good food and more time to talk and share fishing experiences and just get to know each other a little better. Our speaker this month will be noted author and Deep Creek member of long standing, Richard Alden Bean. Richard has written many articles for fly fishing magazines as well as several books, including Fly Fishing Southern California Lakes and Streams. His presentation will be Imitating the Worm. I know Rod Castanien was working feverishly to compile the statistics of numbers and sizes of fish caught during the Opener, so check out his article for details of the trip and pictures. The membership participation in our recent club events has been great. These are fun times, and the members have a lot of fond memories of fishing, helping the environment and the camaraderie with fellow members, and have fun doing it. That, along with fly fishing education, is one of the main reasons for joining the club. So, I encourage all members to participate whenever possible. 5 Bear Creek - More Fish than Trash Earlier this month we had our annual stream cleanup day on Bear Creek. Thanks to the largest turnout in years, 17 people, we spent more time holding fly rods than trash bags. Nothing interesting to report in the trash this year, a few car parts, lots of beer cans, bottles and spent shell casings. All the excitement was with the fishing, with a half dozen folks brand new or just starting flyfishing. The fish were a bit picky, but with some mayflies and little stones coming off they were at least looking up in case you drifted something they wanted. I nearly everyone at least saw a fish go for their fly, and a couple even landed their first. Most notable was Jack Stratton s grandson Dominic, who s first fish ever on a fly, was a wild brown trout on a dry fly that day. Thanks to all who came and helped out for the day, included Kaz Hata from the Long Beach Casting Club who probably spent more time driving than fishing that day, but he did catch fish. For those how might be interested in heading to Bear Creek, only Middle Control Rd has been graded this year, all the other roads are pretty rutted, and the last few miles down to the Slide Lake area is quite a bumpy ride. Steve Kopp Golden Trout Conservation Projects There are currently two projects in Monache Meadows on the calendar for this year looking for volunteers. They are June and October 4-5. This is a beautiful area just south of the Golden Trout Wilderness, with good fishing and a chance to get away. For more information visit Steve Kopp Conservation Chairman Page 5

Trout In The Classroom News We re busy as one armed paper hangers with trout releases right now, with 16 classrooms completed and 9 to go.---had some excitement last week when an unwelcome rattlesnake appeared amidst our students. Our hero Bill Reeves calmly herded it into the brush and no one was bitten. Harold Ewart, our resident legal eagle and risk manager recommended that we warn teachers and students to avoid walking in grassy and brushy areas--done!!! Harold has also been helping the Forest Service Ranger Station refurbish and update the animal wildlife display in their lobby. He has offered a tour of the exhibit to our TIC teachers after they release their trout as well as serving as tour guide to boot. He has generated a lot of interest and may soon have to work nights and weekends! Charley Taverna, one of our stellar new volunteers, was running the aquatic insect station for a group of continuation high school girls last week. He explained that the mayfly adults lived only 5 days, had no mouth parts, did not eat and that their only function was to mate and reproduce. Charley understood one of the girls to ask if any of the insects were divergent? Thinking divergent was a biological term that he was not familiar with, he asked her to repeat the question. She asked do any of the mayfly adults die virgins? Charley answered that he thought that some did. too bad commented the student. Never a dull moment at TIC. Come join us!!! Doug Q & A, Fiction & Facts, Jokes & Lies Question of the month: What fly rod will work best in windy conditions? Answer: A fast action rod has greater action in the tip and will make a truer and longer cast. Check it our for yourself or read the advertisements if you don t believe it. F & F of the month: There is evidence of the use of flies tied on hooks made of bone as early as 1400 BC (over 3,000 years ago) in Egypt. Joke of the month: Fly-fisherman s wife: Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and you get rid of him for the whole weekend! Have a qustion (or Answer) about fly fishing? Do you know something that the rest of us need to know? Heard a good on lately? Wally Hayes at Tatankause@hotmail.com Christmas Banquet Location Change or Stay In last months newsletter we talked about the possible changing of our Christmas Banquet from the SPAGHETTI FACTORY in Riverside to the Steak House in Colton, called PINNACLE PEAKS. This Month we are going to try to set a plan into motion, one or the other. I asked for all members to let me know or to talk to another member of the Board so we could get a good idea as to what you wanted to do about this idea. My information from the Club Membership and or Spouses was almost all the same. Make the change! I did receive negative thoughts about this, but I still think that everyone should have the right to speak their minds, Yes on No. If you have any suggestion on this subject, please feel free to come to me or another member of the board to let us know what you think. THIS IS YOUR CLUB, YOUR DECISION! Hope to hear from you at the May Meeting; Bar-B- Que and White Elephant Sale come May 28 th. See you there, Ron Bishop Page 7

Deep Creek Fly Fishers Journal for the 2008 Opener The data for this journal was compiled each day around dinner time as the stories came in from the streams, the lakes, or after a bragging sessions in the individual condos. The one thing we learned several years ago was the number and size of fish caught increase each time the story is told. Since we gathered this information within a few hours of the events, we believe the numbers are reasonably accurate, with only minor embellishments. A hardy Thank You to Mike Telles for organizing this year s opener, and obtaining the four condos needed to house the 29 members who required sleeping quarters. The group is especially thankful to Bill Reeves, who prepared seven (7) breakfasts and five (5) dinners, and to Bob Habereder who prepared his famous Jumbolia meal for one dinner. These two members kept us well fed with quality feasts for a ridiculously low cost. And, the ice cream dessert at every dinner was greatly appreciated, especially after Bob served us his tasty CAJUN Jumbolia. In addition to the 29 members who stayed in the four condos, there were two members who had private residence in the area. That brought the total to 31 members who participated in this outing. At one of our evening dinner and fish story (BS) sessions, we were fortunate to have Mike Morrison, a Department of Fish and Game Biologist from the Bishop office, spend the evening with us. Mike is an old friend of the club, and several members remember Mike when he was still in college and doing summer work for the Department of Fish and Game. I can t go into much detail, but it is rumored that the alcohol flowed freely on those long hikes into the wilderness, and along the East Walker, but somehow everyone survived. We will save that story for another time. The weather cooperated this year, and we didn t have complaints about rain or snow, but the wind was another matter. It was often difficult to cast a light line on the Upper Owens and get it to stay near the water, let alone put it where you wanted it. However, we did enjoy the fishing and the time spent renewing and developing friendships among our members. The Fishing was slow, especially on Lake Crowley, and some of the more experienced members were not very happy about sharing the number of fish caught or having that number put in the newsletter. Therefore, the statistics will be gentle towards the individuals who exhibited less that normal performance. Also, the size of the fish will only be disclosed if the length exceeded 17 inches. Fish that Page 8 appeared to be only 2 ½ inches won t be mentioned. Thursday, May 1, 2008: This was the day for driving, and only four members went fishing today. Brett Browning and Rick Proux arrived early in the morning, and spent a full day fishing Hot Creek. They both did well with 15 fish caught between them. Mike Wright and Rod Castanien stopped at Shepherd Creek, about ¾ of a mile off HWY 395, just above the Manzanar Historic Site, between Lone Pine and Independence. Three fish were caught and released into this beautiful little creek. Friday, May 2, 2008: Hot Creek was the popular fishing hole today with Brett Browning, Carl Ronk, Rod Castanien, Rick Proux, Bob Habereder, Mike Wright, Carlo Marchese, Dennis Patrick, Jim Babtiste, Fred Borst and Dave Parker casting lines into the stream. Fifty fish were caught with Dave Parker and Mike Wright landing half of them. Lake Crowley was visited by Jim Bradford, Will Johnson, Russ Smith, Gene De Fouw, and Joe Veca. Only three fish were caught, with one person catching two. Earl Eide, Wally Hayes, Bruce Rummer, Bret and Zeny Pemberton went to Rush Creek, above Grant Lake, and caught two fish among them. McGee Creek was the least attended by our group with Bill Reeves, Jim Wilt, Kent Berge, and Ray Moon trying their luck here. Twenty five fish were caught by this group. Dave Parker and Ray Moon tied for the biggest fish caught today, each with an 18 incher. They also tied for the most fish with 15 each. Eighty fish were caught by DCFF today. Saturday, May 3, 2008: McGee Creek was the popular place today with Carl Ronk, Bill Reeves, Jim Wilt, Earl Eide, Wally Hayes, Bruce Rummer, Bret and Zeny Pemberton, Mel Dvorak, and Ray Moon showing up. Thirty four fish were caught at this location. Lake Crowley was next on the popularity list, with Bob Habereder, Jim Bradford, Will Johnson, Russ Smith, and John Halcomb present. Ten fish were landed, and everyone caught at least one. Hot Creek was next on the popularity list, with Brett Browning, Rick Proux, and Kent Berge walking down the cliffs. Eighteen fish were caught. Last on the popularity list was the Upper Owens, with Mike Wright, Gene De Fouw, and Rod Castanien braving the afternoon winds. Nine fish were caught. Ray Moon had the largest number of fish caught

with thirteen, and Ray Moon and Rod Castanien shared the title for the biggest fish, each landing a seventeen incher. Seventy one fish were caught today. Sunday, May 4, 2008: Several members left before sharing their catch, so the numbers will be lower than actual for this day. Big Springs was the popular place to be, with Carl Ronk, Bill Reeves, Earl Eide, Bruce Rummer, Ray Moon, and Rod Castanien all jumping (or climbing) over the rocks. Sixteen fish were caught. Lake Crowley was next in popularity, but I can t imagine why. Only one fish was caught by the entire group, consisting of Jim Bradford, Russ Smith, Gene De Fouw, Joe Veca, Mike Telles, and Mel Dvorak. Jim Wilt and Kent Berge went to McGee Creek and caught one fish between them. Brett Browning and Rick Proux continued their stay at Hot Creek, and landed 14 fish. Steve Reyes went to Pleasant Valley Reservoir and caught 8 fish. Rick Proux and Steve Reyes tied for the largest number of fish today, and Steve Reyes had the biggest at 17 inches. Forty fish were caught today. Monday, May 5, 2008: Hot Creek again became the most popular fishing spot, with Brett Browning, Rick Proux, Will Johnson, Gene De Fouw, Joe Veca, Mel Dvorak, Jim Wilt, Steve Reyes, John Halcomb, and Mike Telles climbing down the hillside. Thirty Nine Fish were caught on Hot Creek today. Big Springs was next, with Earl Eide, Wally Hayes, Kent Berge, and Bruce Rummer going to this clear clean water. Three fish were caught, and Bruce broke his fly rod. McGee Creek was next in popularity, with Rod Castanien, Mike Wright, Bret and Zeny Pemberton dropping lines in the water. Twelve fish were caught today in McGee Creek. Three members, Steve Clark, Russ Smith, and Jim Bradford, went back to Lake Crowley where fourteen fish were inspected. Mike Telles caught the most fish today at twelve, and Steve Clark landed three fish, each hitting the eighteen inch mark. Sixty two fish were caught today Tuesday, May 6, 2008: Hot creek was again the most popular spot, with Earl Eide, Wally Hayes, Kent Berge, Bruce Rummer, Bill Reeves, Brett Browning, Rick Proux, Gene De Fouw, Joe Veca, Mel Dvorak, John Halcomb, Mike Telles, Ray Moon, and Bob Habereder dropping in. Sixty fish were caught at this location. Convict lake was next in popularity, with Will 2008 Opener Continued Page 9 Johnson, Steve Reyes, Jim Bradford, and Russ Smith stopping here. Six fish were caught. Last in popularity was the Upper Owens, below the Monument, with Jim Wilt, Rod Castanien, and Mike Wright participating. Eighteen fish were caught, fourteen of them by Mike. Mike Telles again caught the most fish with 17. Mike Wright caught the biggest fish at 18 ½ inches, followed by himself with 3 fish at 17 inches, and Rod Castanien with one fish at 17 inches. Eighty four fish were caught today. Wednesday, May 7, 2008: The Upper Owens, below the Monument, was the most popular on this last day with: Bill Reeves, Joe Veca, John Halcomb, Ray Moon, Bob Habereder, Rod Castanien, Bret and Zeny Pemberton, Mike Telles, Gene De Fouw, and Mike Wright all sharing that small distance of water. Forty eight fish were caught on the Upper Owens. Hot Creek was now the least popular, with Steve Reyes, Jim Bradford, Earl Eide, Russ Smith, Wally Hayes, Brett Browning, and Rick Proux once again climbing down the cliff. They caught 14 fish at Hot Creek this fine Wednesday. Gene De Fouw right had the most fish caught today with 14, and Mike Wright, Gene De Fouw and Mike Telles tied for the biggest at 17 Inches. Sixty two fish were caught today. All together there were four hundred seventeen fish caught and released. Brett Browning and Rick Proux caught the most fish, with each catching more that 50. however, neither of them caught the most in a single day. Mike Wright caught the biggest at 18 ½ inches. Steve Clark closely followed in the biggest fish category with three fish at 18 inches. A great time was had by all. I hope to see more of you at the Closer in October. Rod Castanien, Newsletter Editor We had three outings to report on this month, and all three had numerous pictures of members having a good time. We had so many pictures that I couldn t find room for all of them within the Newsletter. Therefore, pictures from the 2008 Opener are displayed on the web site, where they can be seen in vivid color. Please log onto the web site and re-live the experience.

April 08 Kern River Trip WOW!!!!! What a big river. The Kern is nothing like the Lower Owens in that it is wider, faster and contains a lot of pocket water that takes a lot of endurance and skill to fish. Over 20 members showed up for our first trip to this great river and it seems that most of us had some luck in catching fish and all had a great experience on new water. We started on Saturday the 26 th with a class on setting up rigs and then reading the stream. Additionally, we demonstrated how to fish nymph, dry fly and streamer rigs plus covered a short introduction to Czech Nymphing. This was done on the veranda of the Golden Trout Resort and then on the river just across the street. We also got to see and try out some of the excellent bamboo rods made by Mike St.Clair. Now it was time to fish. We broke up into groups and fished a lot of the general areas along SM99 which parallels the river all the way to the Johnsondale bridge. These areas included most of the camp grounds that afforded access to the river and had names like Headquarters, Camp 3, Gold Ledge and Limestone. Since this weekend was the opener for all waters north of the Johnsondale bridge, some went to places like Dry Meadow Creek and Lower Peppermint Creek plus other hard to find fishing holes in the wilderness. The days fishing being over, most of us met at a local Restaurant called Cheyennes. The food and drink were excellent and many fishing stories were swapped and of course someone told about the big one that got away. We also learned how difficult it was to catch a fish in a pool the size of your kitchen table with over 300 fish in it. Ask Keith Armbruster and Don Johnson and others about this thrilling experience. Ha!!!!! Now a bit about the fishing. We were fortunate in that a Stonefly hatch was going on. I swear one species looked like a Salmonfly and the other looked like a Yellow Sally. A lot of the fish caught were on big black Stonefly and golden stonefly imitation nymphs fished on the bottom. Jim Lloyd caught fish on top waters flys(stimulaters) and to the best of my knowledge, was the only one to do so. All in all this was a great first trip to this area for many of us and hopefully, many of you will signup for the July return trip. Members present were Keith, Dana, Wyatt, Guinn and Riley Armbruster, Jim Lloyd, Sandy Sanderson, Pat Page 10 Harris, Tom Paulson, Bill McDade, Fred Allred, Mike St. Clair, Hans Ten Thy, Chris Hynes and wife, Bob Williams, Bill Cousins and Terri Miller.
