Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Inc. Izaak Walton League of America NEWSLETTER Volume 55, Number 1 February, March & April Mount Olive Road Centreville, VA Ninety-six Archers Participate in 2016 Fall Archery Tournament The IWLA indoor archery range was the site of the second annual fall STAR FITA archery tournament held on November 5 and 6, 2016, with a total of 96 registered archers. 3 Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Inc. President s Column January 2017 It has been suggested (actually, our secretary has twisted my arm quite adroitly) I devote this column to explaining the structure of the Izaak Walton League of America. A simple explanation of the complete structure of the league, top to bottom, A to Z, how everything and every one fits into the structure and the part we all play into making the league function. Oh yeah, and to fit everything into a couple of paragraphs. Each Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) chapter functions as an independent entity, handling its own membership, arranging its own dues structure, maintaining its infrastructure, and electing its own officers and directors. Each chapter is a part of the national structure and is covered by the national IWLA s 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. That s because the national IWLA is considered to be a charitable organization, dedicated to its mission of community-based conservation, by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). And, that s why each chapter has certain reporting functions to perform each year; giving to the national IWLA details of income, conservation activities performed, charitable activities accomplished, etc. Some chapters, like our own Arlington-Fairfax Chapter (ARL-FX), have their own status as separate 501(c)(3) organizations. Our IRS status is as an independent organization dedicated to education. But we are still part of the national IWLA and we support their mission of conservation. There are currently (all figures vary with time, but are roughly current) 240 chapters in the IWLA, with approximately 38,500 chapter members and around 1,500 additional members at large, who belong to the national organization, but not a local chapter. Some of these chapters are quite small, with ten or fewer members, and are typically dedicated to a particular conservation mission; for example, protection of a particular waterway or parcel of land. These chapters usually are not land owners and have no chapter facilities, such as shooting ranges, field houses, or lakes. Other chapters are land-owning chapters and have shooting facilities, field houses, lakes and/or ponds, etc. Obviously, IWLA chapters vary greatly in their size, makeup, facilities, and focus. Some chapters are focused on boating, camping, fishing, or shooting; others are strictly conservation oriented. The Arlington-Fairfax Chapter is limited by Fairfax County to 2,200 memberships. With family memberships figured in, our membership floats around 2,500 members total; the largest in the league by far. And, obviously, we have shooting ranges, field houses, a small pond, and very active firearms and conservation education programs. As a Virginia chapter, we are part of the Virginia division of the IWLA. All chapters within a given state are part of that state s division. The state divisions, all 17 of them, vary from a small handful of members (some divisions have less than 60 chapter members) to the Virginia division with around 10,000 members. The Virginia division consists of a total of 17 chapters, ranging from four members to our own 2,500. It s important to realize each level of the IWLA, chapter, division, or the national league, has its own organization, structure, and focus. For example, each level of the organization has its own officers, board of directors (BOD), employees (in some cases), functions, and assets. Obviously, these vary according to the size and focus of each chapter, state division, or the national organization. A chapter with three members, or a division with sixty members, is hardly likely to have a total of 19 officers and BOD members as does ARL-FX; nor would they need them. And, each level of the organization has its own dues structure. A chapter of three members, formed to advocate politically for the city (or county, state, etc.) to purchase and maintain a parcel of land as a bird sanctuary, doesn t have buildings, grounds, ranges, etc. to maintain. Thus, their dues structure can be set very low. At ARL-FX, our dues are relatively high, compared to some other chapters. However, our members also enjoy a level of membership benefits not seen in many chapters. For example, with the dues credit allowed for performing eight hours of work for the chapter, my wife and I paid around $ for our family senior 2017 dues. But, $50.00 of that went to the national organization to support what they do; and $7.00 went to the Virginia division to support what they do. So, only $ stayed in the Arlington-Fairfax Chapter to support what we do. Looking around at the facilities we offer, I think you would have to agree we do pretty well in the financial department. Our dues, for most members who take advantage of the dues credit for performing eight hours of work for the chapter, are just over $10.00 a month or around $0.35 per day. Not bad. President s Column continued on page 4 February, March & April

Izaak Walton League of America President s Column continued from page 3 Each level of the league also has their own management structure. And those tend to overlap a bit. Here at the Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, we have five officers (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and membership) and fourteen directors. Seven of those directors are designated directors and are elected to run a specific area, such as skeet and trap or field archery. We also have seven directors at large, who have more general responsibilities and fill in as needed for special projects. National directors are allotted to each state division according to the number of members in that state. The Virginia division has eleven national directors and five officers. Those officers and national directors are elected by the entire Virginia division membership, through the chapter officers and representatives who attend the Virginia division meetings. National directors are appointed various chapters in Virginia, to which they serve as liaisons between the league, division, and chapters. These directors also function as national directors when attending twice yearly meetings of the national IWLA. Within the membership of ARL-FX, we have a total of four national directors; me, my wife Jill, Pam Meara, and Norman Leshan. We can also count among our members the division secretary, Michelle Bell, and treasurer, Scott Meyer. The national IWLA organization consists of a board of directors, which currently consists of roughly 58 national directors, six directors at large, as well as the current presidents of each of the 17 divisions and 12 past national presidents; for a total of 103 directors. There are also four national officers. Many, if not most, of the affairs of the league are conducted by the national executive board, which consists of two officers (chair and vice chair) and eleven members. The executive board is elected by the national board of directors. In addition, there are six regional governors, each of whom is responsible for maintaining contact with the several state divisions within their area. When you consider each regional governor covers an area of several states, perhaps more than 1,000 miles from end to end, you will understand why keeping regional governors is difficult. The national organization has a number of full-time and part-time employees and volunteers, who work out of the national office in Gaithersburg, MD. So there you have an outline, but only an outline, of the structure of the Izaak Walton League of America. If it sounds complicated, perhaps even convoluted, that s because it is complicated, perhaps even convoluted. But, bringing together 240 chapters and 40,000 members isn t a small or easy task. Each chapter is its own entity and the interests, passions, and pursuits of its members are even more so. But somehow we hang together and we do what we do and we all pursue a vision of a better future for our world. And we make a difference. Thanks, Ernie P. Passing of Charlie Doll On December 28, 2016, Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, IWLA, lost a good friend and member. Charlie Doll of Hanover, PA, passed away surrounded by his family at a hospital near his home. Charlie was a long-time member of our chapter, a coach, a teacher, and one hell of a trap shooter. Charlie coached the George Mason University Trap and Skeet Team from 1997 to During his tenure as coach the team won four NCAA national championships. As a trap shooter, Charlie averaged over.9800 fourteen times during his shooting career in singles, gaining his high average in 1974 when he had a.9921 average on 3,800 targets. He won nine state championships including Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, New York, Ohio, and New Jersey. Perhaps his most impressive win came in August 1991 when he won the Dayton Homecoming at the Grand American with 200x200 plus 175x175 in the shoot-off. In 1975 he broke all 500 singles targets at the Maryland State Shoot and had a long run of 865. He missed one and then ran another Volume 55 Number 1

Izaak Walton League of America From Field Archery Cub Run Archers would like to extend an invitation and a warm welcome to all members of the chapter to take advantage of the many facilities, training opportunities, archery equipment, events, and great camaraderie our club has to offer. The indoor range is available for your use anytime a qualified range officer is on site. It is common knowledge a good many regulars in the club are at the range house every morning from approximately 9:30 a.m. until noon. This is a great time to come down and introduce yourself and find out about the Cub Run Archery Club. We especially would like to encourage youth participation and have a great many youth bows that young shooters may practice with to develop their skills. The cost to join Cub Run Archers is only $15 per year. You do not need to be a member of Cub Run Archers to use the facilities. Our members receive a monthly newsletter, discount on archery purchases from Hoffman Archery, and the club has several dinners throughout the year for the family to attend. An application may be printed from the Cub Run Archers Web page or picked up at the indoor archery range. Mail the filled-out application along with a $15 check to Robert D Imperio, Cub Run Archers Secretary, Edge Rock Ct., Chantilly, VA You may Bob at robbyrayd@yahoo.com if you have any questions. There is also a crossbow station with a bag target for field points only and a broadhead target for broadhead shooting. Remember, crossbows are ONLY allowed to be shot from within the crossbow station and not at any of the other targets or ranges. A 28-point field archery course is also available for use to all chapter members. Daytime use only as there is no lighting on the field course. Air bows the latest thing to hit the market. 8 Izaak Walton League of America Feb , 2017 Cub Run Archers Indoor Winter Star FITA Shoot World Archery Indoor Tournament 8 a.m., noon, or 4 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Sunday Field Archery Indoor Archery Range 60 arrows/18 meters/40 cm FITA target Recurve/Compound/Barebow Information: Dan Roberts: wdanroberts@outlook.com Jim Kerrigan: Archerjim2532@outlook.com A Real Basic Pistol Match Bullseye Pistol League shooters often use target guns with special sights and nice grips, long barrels and barrel weights, even red dot scopes at times. Most of the shooters use automatics, while a few stubborn people still use revolvers. As a fun thing to do for getting back to basics, several of the shooters in the league recently shot an improvised snub-nose challenge match. All the participants shot snub-nosed revolvers with iron sights and barrels of three inches or less for thirty shots at a regulation target. This was ten rounds of slow fire (ten rounds in ten minutes), followed by ten rounds at a timed-fire pace (five rounds in twenty seconds), and finally ten rounds at a rapid-fire pace (five rounds in ten seconds). The targets were at twentyfive yards and everyone was shooting centerfire pistols. Needless to say some humor ensued. Sight pictures on these snub-nosed revolvers were rudimentary at best. Everyone was counting the holes in their targets and nobody had all their shots inside the scoring rings. A good time was had by all and the participants generally performed better than many of them likely expected they would under match-like conditions. If nothing else, it certainly increased the confidence of the various Pistol Match continued on page 13 Level 1 and 2 Archery Instructor Certification Course The Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Izaak Walton League of America, and Cub Run Archers sponsored a combined Level 1 and Level 2 Archery Instructor Certification Course on December 17 and 18. The class was held at the indoor archery range for 11 new archery instructors. The class was taught by Dan Roberts and Byron Kissane, both level 2 archery instructor trainers. The Level 1 Archery Instructor Certification Course provides graduates the necessary tools to maintain a high level of safety both on and off the archery range and ensures minimum standards for archery instruction are consistently taught to provide for the safety and enjoyment of the participants, instructors, and spectators. The Level 2 Archery Instructor Certification Course provides graduates the necessary tools to safely instruct beginning and intermediate archers in both short- and long-term programs and qualifies them to administer the USA Archery Level 1 Archery Instructor Certification Course. The 11 new level 2 archery instructors are Resa Combs, Bonnie Gray, Mark Gauntner, Fred Ansick, Donna Kissane, Daniel Song, Rebecca Shen, Tim Johnson, Opa Johnson, Robert D Imperio, and Lani Young. Many of these new instructors are involved with the upcoming AFC-IWLA Youth Archery Program that begins January 8. They are also involved with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, park programs, and other programs through the county. The AFC-IWLA Youth Archery Program has 33 students enrolled and will be held for 12 weeks, every Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the AFC-IWLA indoor archery range. If you are interested in becoming a certified archery instructor and would like to help with the youth archery program, please contact Dan Roberts at WDanRoberts@ outlook.com. 8 Volume 55 Number 1

Izaak Walton League of America AFC-IWLA Membership Minutes Good Day! (Any day at our chapter is a good day for me). My name is Benn Crandall and I have been a member of our chapter for over 12 years. I frequent the skeet and trap range most often, but thoroughly enjoy all of the property. I have served on the board of directors as a director at large for the past six years and just last month I was asked (volunteered) to serve as the membership chairman. A great organization is more than just great grounds and facilities. It s the members who make the difference. Members who are willing to contribute their personal time to improve every aspect of the chapter. Membership VOLUNTEER Notes Here are some interesting statistics for 2016: 253 NEW members contributed more than 2,000 hours of volunteer labor to maintain or improve our chapter established chapter members contributed more than 5,700 volunteer hours toward projects, events, and range duties. Our 19 directors and officers contributed more than 3,400 hours for meetings, events, and projects. These are just the documented hours for these groups. I know from personal experience, you can take the number of hours put in by the board and officers and triple that documented number. In the coming newsletters, I will update the membership on projects, events, and other opportunities where the members can volunteer their time to help. Donate to Arlington-Fairfax Chapter Using AmazonSmile Chapter members are reminded they can donate to the chapter by registering and using AmazonSmile at when they shop on Amazon. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the chapter. Our chapter is listed with AmazonSmile as Izaak Walton League of America Arlington-Fairfax Chapter. Please see for program details. Membership Notes Renewal update: As of 1/20/17, the office staff has processed just under 1,800 renewal forms. That leaves more than 400 yet to be received. Don t forget, any renewals postmarked after January 2, 2017, are late. In order to renew, you will then have to pay the late fee of $ DO NOT FORGET to sign the back of your renewal form. Otherwise, your application and check will be returned to you. BE PATIENT waiting for your credentials. We mail in bulk. That means we wait until we can bundle 400+ envelopes together before we take a trip to the post office. Membership renewal forms have been available online and on site since October. As a courtesy, we are including one in this newsletter. (If you are using the enclosed form to renew, don t forget to include the late fee along with your renewal.) In case you have missed the announcements, the chapter has implemented SignUpGenius as our way of communicating projects and events to our entire membership. So, whenever possible, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR ADDRESS IS CORRECT (and readable) when you register for a class, sign up to volunteer, or renew your membership. At this point, everyone should have received at least one invitation to participate in a chapter event. If you are not receiving s from SignUpGenius, please send an to the membership office at arl_ffx_iwla_mbr_sec@yahoo.com and let them know. That s all for this edition. I ll see you around. 11 Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Inc. Requested Chapter Bylaws Change Purpose: To convert one current Board of Directors at Large position to a new position of Designated Director for the Air Range. Rationale: The required activity and scope of the position of Air Range Director has reached a position of parity with other Designated Director positions. Therefore, the position of Air Range Director should be a Designated Director position. This will be voted on by the membership at the February 21, 2017, general membership meeting. Bylaw language remaining the same is printed in roman. Bylaw language being deleted is enclosed in black brackets ([ ]). New bylaw language is printed in italic. Interest Survey Any AFC-IWLA members interested in having a recurring members-only, adults-only air rifle/ air pistol time slot during a weekday, please Roger Thrasher, air range manager, at range@ afc-iwla-sillsairrange. org. While the Monday evening and Friday evening open practices are for both adults and youth, there has been reported interest in having an adultsonly session some time during a daytime weekday slot. The air range is certainly available, so the key enabler is having someone willing to organize the sessions and ensure proper range safety officer coverage. Junior Chapter Elects New Officers The junior chapter elections were held November 26 through December 2, 2016, and the membership elected a new slate of officers and directors and approved several bylaw changes. Newly elected are: President: Bryce Sturtz Vice President: Alison Chapman Secretary: Jack Curry Treasurer: David Linkh Director at Large: Niya Burney All have been duly installed and in accordance with the revised bylaws, they began their term of office on January 1, The group is already discussing chapter activities for the upcoming year, so watch the newsletter for further information. 12 Izaak Walton League of America Rifle-Pistol Range Are YOU helping out at the rifle-pistol range? Why NOT? We recently had a member come to the rifle-pistol range and set up his targets using the range-provided staplers in fact he used two of the staplers and in the process he emptied both of them. Upon returning from downrange, he did not bother to refill the empty staplers with the staples provided. The staples are in a bowl at the sign-in desk stand where the staplers hang from hooks. The staples for refilling the staplers are less than two feet from each other and in plain sight. The two range safety officers (RSOs) on duty asked the member to refill the staplers as a courtesy to the next member who might want to use the range staplers. The member flat out refused to do so and he tried to argue the point. Our IWLA chapter is a volunteer organization. Some members donate many hours each week to keep the chapter running. They are NOT paid for their time and labor. The RSOs work at least one shift a month and that includes various tasks, BUT their principal duty is range safety. The RSOs are not there as your servants. The members do NOT have the right to order the RSOs to do work at the range. They are not there to clean up after you. Each member has a responsibility to police their shooting point and benches before they leave. You should at a minimum clean up all expended brass and trash and put the discarded stuff into the appropriate containers. The RSOs are not paid for the time and work they willingly provide to the chapter. Those six hours of labor you donated when you joined the chapter 10, 20, or 30 years ago have long since run out. The chapter does not employ people to refill staplers, pick up litter, clean sinks or toilets, or return items to their proper storage place. What did you do to help out on your last trip to the chapter? No Eyes, No Ears, No Range Qualification Badge, No 2017 Blue Sticker, No Ammunition: All Equal NO SHOOTING! If you do not have eye protection you cannot shoot at the rifle-pistol range. If you do not have ear protection you cannot shoot at the rifle-pistol range. In fact, you need proper eye and ear protection to be on the paved firing line at the rifle-pistol range. You must display the white range qualification badge on your outer clothing to shoot at the rifle-pistol range. You also need to display the blue-colored 2017 current member insert in your white range qualification badge to get access to the rifle-pistol range. You must have the correct ammunition for your firearm to shoot at the rifle-pistol range. It is not the job of the RSO to check/inspect your ammunition to see you have brought the correct ammunition. That is strictly your responsibility. The wrong ammunition can result in a dangerous accident. For example: one time a person with a.270 caliber bolt-action rifle brought that firearm and.280 caliber ammunition to the range. The person loaded a round of.280 ammunition into the rifle. He noticed that the bolt was difficult to close but he was able to cam the bolt shut with some extra effort. The.280 round is slightly longer than the.270 rifle chamber. Camming the bolt shut increased the crimp on the bullet in the.280 case. The bolt fired the round but the extra crimping caused the pressure to go very high and the receiver broke into several pieces. The shooter was only slightly injured and the rifle was destroyed. FOR SAFETY: Ear and Eye Protection Required at ALL Times on Firing Line at the Rifle-Pistol Range When the Range is Live We have noticed members and guests are frequently NOT wearing eye protection when the firing line is live. Our RSOs will warn people to wear their glasses or other eye protection, but if people persist in not wearing eye protection, we will require them to leave the range! The RSO on duty announces ear and eye protection is required for all persons on the firing line every half hour. That is more than 6,500 times every year. This safety measure must be followed. Your eyes can be easily damaged if a spark of burning powder or a flying piece of brass or bullet fragment hits your eye. No exceptions to the rule! SPEEDING: Chapter Speed Limit is 10 MPH We have noticed many drivers are driving faster than 10 mph on chapter roads. Pedestrian safety is the principal reason for the 10 mph speed limit. Adults and children walk on the chapter roads and they have the right-of-way at all times. Driving faster than 10 mph raises dust clouds that can hurt people with dust allergies and the dust floats over the firing line and can damage some firearms. There is no excuse for members and their guests driving fast enough to raise dust clouds that coat firearms and fill our range houses and other facilities with a layer of dust. Slow down, you will still get there! 12 Volume 55 Number 1

Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Inc. Guests at the Rifle-Pistol Range There is some unnecessary confusion about bringing guests to the rifle-pistol range. This is covered in detail at the new-member orientation. Remember, members with temporary range badges are not allowed to bring guests to the rifle-pistol range. We also strongly suggest you visit the range several times prior to bringing guests. You need to know, and understand, how the range functions so you can properly supervise your guests. You may want to think twice before bringing a firsttime handgun shooter to our range. Asking the first-time handgun shooter to shoot at a target 25 yards away is a good way to make that first shooting experience much less than a good memory. From the Rifle-Pistol Range Rules: GUESTS. Range Qualified Chapter members are authorized to bring guests to the Rifle-Pistol Range. This does not mean that your son who is NOT a chapter member can, by himself, bring his buddies to the range for an afternoon of shooting fun. This also means that your son should not take your range badge and bring his buddies to the range. Yes, it happens! However, no guest will be allowed on the range unless accompanied and supervised by a Range Qualified Chapter member. This means that if you, the chapter member, bring two guests with you, you are NOT getting two or three shooting positions. Since you have to supervise your guests, you CANNOT shoot when they are shooting. You get one shooting position. You put only one firearm down on the position table at the firing line. You put only ammunition for that firearm on the table at the firing line. One person, you or a guest, shoots the firearm at a time. YOU MUST MAINTAIN COMPLETE CONTROL OVER THE ACTIVITIES OF YOU AND YOUR GUESTS AT ALL TIMES. Remember: One Badge, One Bench, One Gun Members are responsible for the conduct and actions of their guests. If your guest is shooting in an unsafe manner, the duty RSO will tell you to correct the unsafe action(s). If you ignore this or if the unsafe shooting action(s) continue, you and your guests will be required to leave the range. We cannot and will not accept unsafe shooting practices by members or their guests. The number of times that any one guest may be allowed to use the range is subject to the Chapter grounds rules (three (3) times in one calendar year). So you cannot bring your neighbor or co-worker to the range every weekend. This rule was created when some members would split a membership fee between themselves and a friend or two. And the member brought the other guys out as many times as they wanted. If the guest likes our chapter, he needs to join the chapter and pay for his fair share of the costs of running our chapter. Members may bring immediate family members to the range without regard to this limit on the number of uses. The member must remain in close proximity and immediate supervision of guests and family members at all times and members are responsible for the conduct and actions of their guests and family members. The chapter member must have immediate supervision over family members at all times. You cannot supervise your child if you are shooting at another bench. We have seen instances where the adult parks the child and a firearm on a firing-line table, along with a box of ammunition. Then the adult goes to another table to get some real shooting done. (Now occasionally the child shoots better than the adult and the child should be supervising daddy s shooting!) To keep the range safe for all participants and to prevent accidents that could lead to the county shutting the range down, we must make the chapter member supervise his/her family members. Dr Ed, CRO Education & Training Update The 2017 Education & Training schedule is available. Make sure you check out the schedule on the website: Pistol Match continued from page 8 participants in their ability to use their snub-nosed revolvers in various settings. The Bullseye Pistol League does rimfire, centerfire, and air-pistol matches on a rotating schedule each year. These are on the first Sunday of each month before the range opens for the general membership. There are often some open spots on the relays. We sometimes do fun things like the real basic pistol match as well. New shooters and people interested in trying this type of target shooting are encouraged to come by and check things out. 14 Izaak Walton League of America Virginia Youth Trapshooting League Each spring, the chapter trap range is full of youth shooters participating in the Virginia Youth Trapshooting League (VYTL). Coach Dean Spiridon leads the youth trap program over the course of the eight-week season, with upwards of 15 youth participating each year. The VYTL is a trap shooting competition for Virginia youth up to 22 years of age. The league s unique format provides shooters throughout Virginia with the opportunity to compete at their local clubs and have their scores compared with peers from throughout the state. Our shooters performed very well in both the season long competition as well as during the end of season state tournament. Earning VYTL high junior honors for the regular season was the Chapter s Eric Swahn, with a average. Our club was represented well at the VYTL/AIM (Academics, Integrity, Marksmanship) championships held in Winchester, VA. The team of Kevin Higgins, Alex Francisco, Eric Swahn, Reilly Cuccinelli, and Michael Kerner finished in first place in the junior category, bringing home the Virginia AIM championship with a score of 860x1000. The next nearest team finished eight birds behind. Also participating for the chapter were Patrick Higgins and Sean Kerner. Earning individual awards in Winchester were Eric Swahn, 180x200 (open junior runner-up), Reilly Cuccinelli, 176x200 (high lady), and Sean Kerner, 135x200 (open pre sub junior runner-up). Congratulations to the team and individual winners! We are already planning and looking forward to next season. If you or someone you know would like to participate in the youth trap program, please Dean Spiridon for more information at dean@trapshootingonline.com. Col. Birt Kidwell Winter Skeet and Trap League Kicks Off for 2017 The popular Winter Skeet and Trap League began the 2017 season on Sunday, January 8, with enthusiastic members braving bitter cold to come out to shoot. The season schedule includes six skeet and six trap matches for each team running every Sunday for 13 weeks, followed by an awards presentation at the annual chapter picnic. Most of the teams from last year returned for another try at fame and glory, with several new shooters joining as well. As in the past several years, we again fielded a full complement of 28 teams and 168 shooters. Competition for top honors in both the team and individual events promises to be as fierce as ever and many of the league members practiced diligently in the off season. Team awards are presented in two distinct categories: weekly match point competition between two teams and cumulative team score over the entire season. The first category rewards the ability to prevail in head to head matchups each week, while the second category rewards consistent performance over the long haul. Individual awards include high skeet, high skeet runner-up, high trap, high trap runner-up, high overall average, and most improved. In preparation for the start of the season, league members volunteered their time on the two Saturdays preceding the first shoot to perform a myriad of chores around the range. These range from moving boxes of targets into the trap houses to grounds maintenance to general housekeeping in the clubhouse. Keeping the trap houses supplied with targets is a constant challenge. Every season winter league members shoot at over 100,000 targets, equating to approximately 750 boxes weighing over 9 tons. Due to the heavy use of the facilities over the course of the season, regular cleaning and maintenance chores are a necessity. The success of the league is dependent on all of the participants contributing their time. Thanks go out to all of the members who routinely pitch in and to Pete Bills for organizing weekly cleanup crews. Welcome to the new league shooters and welcome back to all the old hands. Keep your head down, your eye on the target, and be safe. 14 Volume 55 Number 1

Below are updates on the progress of our four current AFC-IWLA environmental scholarship winners: Monica Banghart, 2015 Scholarship Winner My first year at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry has been great and I love the school. The first semester was a big adjustment, but I think I ve gotten the hang of things. I ve become a student ambassador for the school, an orientation leader for incoming freshmen in the fall, and I m currently applying to intern at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo down the street. I have a job as a dispatcher/communications officer for the SUNY-ESF campus police department and have loved every minute of working there. I m also involved with clubs that allow me to volunteer on farms in central New York and create lessons about gardening and the environment to teach at local Syracuse elementary and high schools. I ve met so many great people here the students are passionate and easy to get along with and the professors are very high in their fields. Even in my second semester I have gotten to take some interesting upper-level classes such as Government and the Environment and Peoples, Plagues, and Pests. I ve already learned so much and am looking forward to the classes I ll take and the people I ll meet in my next three years pursuing my bachelor of science in conservation biology. I would like to thank you again for supporting me as I further my education. James Green, 2014 Scholarship Winner As my second year at the University of Virginia has come to a close, I look back in awe at how quickly it has passed as well as how much I have learned. Over the course of this past year I have had to learn important life skills that have encouraged me to mature and grow as an independent young man. In particular, living in an off-campus apartment this year has forced me to learn skills needed for a functional everyday life including regularly paying bills for utilities and cooking a lot of my own food. Furthermore, now that I have a firm academic and social foundation at UVA, I have been able to further refine my interests and explore more relevant clubs and coursework. Starting in the fall semester I joined two groups, Green Grounds and Sustainability Advocates, both of which aim to advocate sustainable initiatives on UVA s campus and the greater Charlottesville area. These two organizations have given me access to a whole new network of people at UVA, all of whom have a common goal of making the world a more sustainable place. In academic news, I have declared a B.S. in environmental science as well as a Scholarship Updates Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Inc. B.A. in leadership and public policy. While the degree in environmental science emphasizes the physical science behind hydrology, atmosphere and weather, ecology, and geology, leadership and public policy develops ethical leadership and preparedness for public service. I hope the mixture of these two disciplines will allow me to bridge the gap between environmental issues and realistic solutions in the policy arena. I took several environmental science and policy related courses this year including Fundamentals of Ecology, Fundamentals of Geology, and Public Policy Challenges of the 21 st Century. As I write to you all, I am studying ecology and environmental policy abroad in New Zealand. Thus far, the experience has been nothing less than amazing and I am astonished at how much of New Zealand s environmental dilemmas and solutions are applicable to the United States. Alycia Bouchard, 2013 Scholarship Winner This semester I had the opportunity to study abroad in Copenhagen, the sustainable and innovative capital of Denmark. I was fortunate enough to travel extensively this year from working at a social enterprise last summer in Kenya, to visiting Thailand and Bangladesh, and finally exploring Europe during my studies this semester. I ve enjoyed discovering many new places and meeting so many people from other cultures. Some of the greatest learning experiences I ve had this year have been outside of the classroom, whether on a farm in Limuru, Kenya, in the busy streets of Dhaka, or teaching at a high school in Copenhagen. It s hard to believe I am about to enter my final year at Vanderbilt, but I am excited to see what the year has in store and am continuously grateful for my scholarship from the IWLA. Madeline Ryan, 2012 Scholarship Winner I want to say first and foremost how grateful I am for the scholarship this organization has awarded me. With the scholarship, I have been able to study and work hard through my fourth and final year as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech without having to worry about financial burdens. Time has flown by and I cannot believe I am graduating. This summer I will be doing research on nutrient cycling in Chesapeake Bay hatcheries. I will be starting graduate school this fall at Virginia Tech and will be pursuing a master s degree in biological systems engineering. I am so excited to see where my degree will take me and what I can do to help the environment. I hope to pursue environmental consulting when I complete my master s degree. Thank you again for all of your support and I know I would not be where I am today without your generosity. February, March & April
