International Rep - Spring Banquet Report Well, another Spring Banquet is in the record books and from all of the comments during and after the event, it was a success. What made it a success is all of the attendees ate good food, swapped a few stories, told a couple of white lies and left the event smiling. I am rejuvenated again. The Spring Banquet seems to do that to me. Irene from the Seattle area, presented Kevi and I with a beautiful basket of goodies and if that wasn t enough, she brought a cooler and it contained a couple of great looking steaks, some cheeses and pepper sticks for us. That was to show that her group appreciated what Kevi and I do for this club. Very humbling!!! To start the evening, Ben Altman presented me with a plaque from his group and it almost made me cry. I hope that I can figure out how to get a picture of it to send in this article. Again, very humbling experience for me and Kevi! I am humbled because I enjoy what we are doing and yes, it is a little harder to wear three hats; Columbia Basin, Washington State and International Rep going at the same time. But I am doing it because I want this club to continue on and I think we are headed in the right direction. Does it help me and Kevi to know it is appreciated? You bet!! That is why is say I am rejuvenated again and mostly from seeing good friends again. We had a guest speaker, Mike Leibold (owner of Everett Power Sports) and he gave a great talk on the 2018 Honda Goldwing. They have really come a long way in technology. I m going to test one as soon as I get my balance straightened out. But I thank Mike for the talk, but I m not sure the Harley group enjoyed it as much as I did, but they were gracious and let him speak. We heard from George and Willie Penner from the Okanagan group. They re holding their own and may have a new member soon. George and Willie are handling registration for the International and he said they have almost 70 registered. Registration usually starts coming in hard in June. Thanks for doing registration you two. You make it look so easy but I know it is not!! Ben Altman gave a report on Oregon State UMCI. I didn t realize that his area is so big. I thought Washington was spread out, but Ben is really has a big job, but he does it so well. Thanks again for the plaque, it was most appreciated, Ben. Irene from Seattle said she is still getting about 15 for her breakfast meetings and now that the weather is better she thought that would pick up. I want to thank Irene for all she does over there. I know it is not easy but it certainly is appreciate, especially by me. 4

International Rep - Spring Banquet Report, continued... Irene also presented David and Susan with a basket of goodies for all the work they do on the WASH and all the things they do for the club in general. I think everyone in the club should appreciate David and Susan. We have probably the most complete and readable newsletter in the bunch because of them and it is hard work to do that I know. Ben and the SparkPlug (Oregon s newsletter) is pretty good looking as well, but oh, guess what? David and Susan do that one too. We are very lucky to have them in our midst and David is very patient with me getting my information in to him. THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH!! Charlie Crane from the Spokane group gave his report and the Spokane area is doing OK. They are tied in with a couple of other clubs so they meet almost every Sunday and ride somewhere. They heard from Richard Hentz. He said his brother passed away and he was helping with his estate and was planning on heading back this way. Keep up the great work all of you. Charlie and John Fast are Co-Reps for that area. Well I know I am running this pretty long, but this will be my 3 reports rolled into one for this month s edition. I know David is patient but can t push him to hard. I want to thank all of you that came to the banquet and like I said, Kevi and I do these things because we believe in UMCI and we love the people that belong to this club. Believe in the Club, believe in your friendships and believe in your love of riding motorcycles and you just know we will survive and thrive. I and Kevi appreciate each and every one of the members of UMCI because we get to call you friends. Ride Safe, Ride Lots and most of all have a ton of fun. Kevin and Kevi Thank you all!!! 5

Presented to Kevin Besel at Spring Banquet by Ben Altman, Oregon State Rep May 20,

Inland Northwest News Thirteen of us were at breakfast at Denny's for our April meeting on a wet and windy Saturday. And not a single bike in the parking lot. Riding weather can't be far off, can it? Well?? Can it?? One has to think May will be different and we'll all be on bikes next time. At least I remembered to attend this month. Did you notice no Inland NW report in the last WASH? Can I blame old age? OK, I spaced it out and even though I knew our new meeting place was Denny's at Pines and Sprague, it seems I forgot to watch the calendar and missed the March meeting altogether... Charlie chaired the meeting and all the normal things were discussed. Tony from Canada was our honored guest and to make it even better it was his birthday. So he was given the chance to draw his own ticket for the $17 50/50 pot. What an honorable guy Tony is! He didn't draw his own ticket, he drew Billie's number. And thus ended our April get together. -Tom Wells 7

Seattle/Puget Sound Area News I had a great time at the Spring Banquet and don t know who didn t. It s always great to see Kevin & Kevi and the other State Reps and members. The food was good, the door prizes were great and the warm smiles from the staff who fed us and took our dishes away, a pleasant experience. I thank the members who are attending their first Spring Banquet. Hope you all had a great time. We couldn t have had better weather. Thank you Mike Leibold for the 2018 Gold Wing update and Wing Washington information. As the weather starts to get better, we hope to have more members join us. I am looking forward to the Rallys to come. I ll have to miss the Idaho State Rally as this is on the Saturday of our Breakfast meeting. I will be at the Washington State Rally at Pine Near RV Park in Winthrop and planning to attend the International Rally at Glacier Peak RV, in Columbia Falls, Montana. That is it for now. I m retiring from my job, August 31 st this year. I will split my time between Port Angeles and Mountlake Terrace. Will still attend breakfast meetings. Stay tuned for more information. I haven t planned too much of my retirement life yet. Anyways, I want to get back to the banquet. It was wonderful and Kevin and Kevi did a wonderful job as usual. Thank You very much!!! Ride Safe, and see you all down the road. Irene Blanes - Seattle/Puget Sound Area Rep 8

Northern Pygmy Owls! One of the beautiful aspects of the full time RV or "gypsy" life is the wildlife we are fortunate enough to witness. One afternoon, in central Oregon, we had a half dozen really cute visitors. After watching them for at least half an hour, we looked them up to find out exactly what they were. It seems we were being entertained by Northern Pygmy Owls (Call-1) (Call-2)! I commented that it was the first time they had come here. Steve said it was probably the only time we would see them. Unfortunately, so far, he has been correct. But that day, we did get to sit and watch them for about 2 hours. From The Gypsy, Mary Nordby 10

Cleaning Textile Motorcycle Gear After two years and 20,000 miles of wearing a First Gear Kilimanjaro 37.5, the high-viz lime wasn't looking so high viz any longer. I'll admit it, I'd probably waited a little too long, but none of my friends complained about riding around with a stinky dirt bomb, so I didn't rush things. Cleaning textile motorcycle gear isn't as simple as just tossing it in the washer. Some care is needed to be sure it has a successful go-around and doesn't get compromised in the process. And speaking of the process, here's one that works. 1. Empty the pockets - We've seen jackets with as few as four and as many of 20 pockets built into them. The more pockets, the more places we can store things - like - a garage door opener, passport, cellphone, spare key, kickstand pad, neck gaiter, broken key removal tool, papers, business cards, and so much more. None of these or any items are worth destroying in the washer, so be sure to check each pocket twice. 2. Clean the Velcro if necessary - Any Velcro closures can pick up alien substances like weeds, feathers, string, thread, and otherwise. If it needs to be cleaned, use an old toothbrush or pet flea comb to wick it out, taking car not to damage the hooks or the loops. 3. Remove the armor and any interior liners - Most textile pants and jackets will allow you to remove the armor. In some cases it varies on the left and right sides and may vary in size as well. Use a magic marker in black or silver to label each piece so you put it back together later the way it was intended. If the jacket has an interior liner, remove it and plan to run it in a regular load of laundry later. 4. Lock it all down - Zip ALL the zippers closed including the main zippers on the front of the jacket as well as the fly zipper on the pants. Button any and all buttons. And lastly, secure any Velcro adjusters, taking care not to have any hook sections (the scratchy side) exposed. These sections can tear up textile fabric in a single washing. Better manufacturers take care to hem the hook section on armor on the piece you remove, if the armor is sealed in fabric. 5. Manually treat any excessive stains - If you have an all-black riding suit, you can skip this section. Those of use who like a little color in our life can read it. Use a spray on stain removal product like Shout or mix up a table spoon of non-detergent cleaner like Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap with a cup of water. Apply the liquid to heavily stained parts of the garment, starting with the dirtiest areas first so they get more soaking time. Using a soft nylon dish brush, scrub the liquid into the stained area. Don't use bleach. 17

Cleaning Textile Motorcycle Gear, continued Wash it - Top load washers are pretty rough on textile riding gear and we've seen a garment or two get shredded over the years. Side load units are preferred. Using a non-detergent cleaner, like Nikwax Tech Wash, wash the garment through a regular cycle in warm water. Only wash one garment at a time. Run your jacket in one load; pants in another. If you're treating it with a washer-safe water-proofing liquid like Nikwax TX Direct, be sure to add it in to the bleach or fabric softener dispenser now. Never combine waterproofing agents with detergents or non-detergent in the initial cycle or you'll turn the jacket into a goopy, sticky mess worthy only of the dumpster. 7. Air dry it - Many jackets and pants profess to be waterproof and some seams utilize a tape to secure the barrier. Running a garment in a hot dry can cause these seams to weaken and fail. Our advice is simple - air dry it if at all possible. Now is also the time to apply any spray-on waterproofing solution if you plan to go that route. Products like Nikwax's TX Spray On prefer to go onto a wet garment, rather than a dry one, since the wetness creates the conduit the product needs to penetrate the garment. You can rub it in gently with that nylon dish brush for additional adhesion. 8. Put it back together - Once your gear is dry, slip the armor back into place, reinstall any interior liners, reload your pockets, and enjoy the ride until you reach the point of stinky dirt bomb again.
