NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 2 RUGBY CONVENOR Senior Rugby results v All Saints College CCGS 1 st XV 32 defeated All Saints 0 CCGS 16s 5 defeated by All Saints 19 CCGS 15s No Game CCGS 14s 17 defeated by All Saints 43 Last Saturday, three of our teams travelled to Bathurst by bus to play All Saints College in round 3 games. The 14s were coming off a big win at home against St. Andrews and took the field with plenty of confidence. They competed very well in the match but All Saints had two very good athletic players who both scored long range tries and proved to be the difference in the match. The 16s match was keenly contested with the match in the balance. It took a run- away try to All Saints College in the last five minutes which took the game away from CCGS. The 1 st XV were really committed to performing well on Saturday and they certainly raised their level of performance from the previous week against St. Andrews. They dominated All Saints College in every aspect and played some wonderful running rugby to run out deserved winners, Special thanks to the following Boys who worked hard for the program last Saturday. Matthew Douglass (Travelling match official), Tom Herron, Jack Kemp and Eden Leontarou. This Saturday we return home to play Redlands in our round 4 clash. Good luck all teams.

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 3 CCGS 1sts XV CCGS 32 All Saints College 0 (Tries: Hicken, Barnett, Massie 2, Wilkinson, Greenwood. Goal: Henderson-Foley) Even after the long bus ride to Bathurst, the boys came out with an attitude. Steamroller. Early pressure by All Saints was easily repelled and a try was scored out wide after excellent phase play up the field. All Saints didn t give up but all of their raids were resisted and CCGS scored two more tries in the first half. Still, good decision making gives the best field possession and more points were on offer. A leisurely start to the second half allowed All Saints to gain field position and for the first 20 minutes they were camped in our half. The defence showed our true mettle. With 15 to go three excellent tries team tries. An excellent win with belief beginning apparent. The TEAM is growing and will need to be such next week against Redlands at CCGS Under 16 home. CCGS 16s 5 defeat by All Saints College 19 (Try: Thomson) The first half started very strongly and after 10 minutes of pressure CCGS scored true team try after a backline breakthrough. Forward defence was relentless and the backs showed their willingness to attack at every opportunity. A number of mistakes crept in and penalties took the advantage when on the All Saints line. They scored two tries to one in this half The second half began well, however there was complete turnaround. Again mistakes took away any advantage gained allowing All Saints to score one unanswered try in the half. Confidence is the best defence when things aren t going your way. Confidence in your abilities will affect your actions and overcome adversity - especially when you know you are better than the other team. Lift your heads and go into the Redlands game on Saturday as hard as you can.

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 5 CCGS Under 14 CCGS 14s 17 defeated by All Saints College 43 (Tries: Medcalf 2, Tancred. Goal Tancred) What a difference a week makes! After a fantastic win against St Andrew s, the boys set off on the long coach journey to face All Saints College Bathurst (who, on the face of last weekend s results, looked to be one of the form teams in the division). The first half is probably better left veiled in mystery as both Mr Berczelly and Mr. Eades were at a loss to explain what happened after Huwan Medcalf crossed the line in the first 10 minutes. Suffice to say, the second half started with us trailing 28:5 and we had a point to prove. Play was more direct, more aggressive and generally better all round as Kye Tancred crossed the whitewash early and we applied pressure across the park. All Saints weren t to be held though and they crossed the line 3 times in the second half before Huwan Medcalf had the last say of the day, crossing for his second in the final minute. There were some positives to be gained from the away trip, namely, our man on fire presentation and the scrum which was solid throughout the game despite being the teams first real setup in 2 years. Work to be done this week boys before a return to Rugby 1 and hopefully a game full of passion and confidence. Australian Schools is published twice a year to schools around Australia. Murray goal) lost to Sydney Grammar 35 Under leaden tries and on a wet field, the Mighty Nines played their first ever home game on Rugby 3 against Sydney Grammar. It was a close contest early with CCGS powering forward via strong runs from Isaac Wasiliev, Max Murray, Flynn Jones and Lucca Phillips. However, Sydney were first to score and take the lead 5 nil. Jack McHugh answered right back with a scintillating long range try and, with a Murray conversion, CCGS hit the lead. After that, the visitors began to dominate territory and they charged towards the CCGS line, over and over again, only to be pushed back by wonderful tackles from Casper Mudge, Murray, Wasiliev, Charlie Bond and Harry Atherton. Eventually the pressure began to tell and Sydney scored three tries before half time to make it The messages during the break were for the forwards to get numbers into the rucks and drive over while the backs were asked to mark up. The forwards, led

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 7 CCGS Under 9 by Jack Venables and Mikey Tripolone began to be far more aggressive and they were followed by Ethan Bilson and Tom Potts. This allowed Jones, McHugh and Murray to all go on strong runs but, unfortunately, the team couldn t score. Backs, Oscar Fort, Fin Tomlinson and Lachlan Barnett all tried hard in defence but they couldn t prevent Sydney scoring three second half tries to extend their lead. The Mighty Nines had the final word when McHugh raced away for his fourth try of the season but the visitors were deserved winners by Bad luck boys. There were many good things to come out of the game but, also some things to work on. Best and Fairest; Max Murray 3, Casper Mudge 2, Mikey Tripolone 1, Jack Venables 1

Page 8 CCGS Under 10 CCGS 10 defeated by Tudor House 22 (game not completed) After the first round wash out and the second round bye, the Under 10 team were looking forward to their first official game against Tudor House. Unfortunately the game was cut short soon after half time with precautions taken to aid an injured Tudor House player who required an ambulance. Fortunately, the Tudor House Player was later deemed OK. Up until that point, our Grammar team were attacking and had played extremely well, dominating the breakdown and scrum set plays often driving Tudor House backwards. The team were able to demonstrate plenty of go forward momentum off the back of strong runs by all forwards. Aidan was a notable standout making plenty of go forward metres for the team and was aided by some good strong runs by Will, Blake and Shamus. Defensively, the team were very strong in the middle of the park, however, conceded a couple of long range tries with Tudor House repeatedly exploiting us down the blind side and another from a turnover against the run of play. Our backs looked more settled and produced two sparkling tries with Darcy M and Toby finding regular space in Tudor s defensive line. Defensively, Logan and Luca made plenty of first half tackles and all players tried hard on cover defense but couldn t quite reign in Tudor House s big fast running Fly Half. I think our backline will continue to improve once they get a few games behind them and trust their passing and tackling game a little more. Overall the team showed good intensity and are developing well together but need some more match practice to get into a rhythm. Well played all and I look forward to our game against Grammar Edgelciff this week. 9 Page 9 CCGS Under 11 CCGS defeated by Knox With rain falling again on the central coast, the under 11s traveled down the freeway fully expecting to play Knox Grammar on a wet, sodden field. To the surprise of all, the other end of the M1 was bathed in glorious sunshine and we were greeted with another perfect Autumn morning. Coach Cusack held an intense pre-game warm up session, ably assisted by Matthew Welch and Jason Atherton. Special thanks to both dads for picking up the pads. Numbers were down, but thankfully Knox helped us field a team and then throughout the remainder of the game. After such a solid warm up session, the team were fired up and ready to play. Some good, solid defense early saw CCGS keep Knox out but as the game progressed, our defense opened up and Knox crossed the line to take the lead. The Knox team had the advantage of size and put it to good use, staying in front for the remainder of the game. The CCGS team displayed great tenacity and grit in not giving up in the face of such an obvious size difference. Our determination was rewarded when Harrison R. crossed the line late in the second half causing a deafening roar to erupt from the sideline. Harrison B. kicked the conversion and we were off the mark. The post match brief saw the team identify a number of strategies to work on; getting the 'green wall' closer to the play, and ripping the ball. Well done to all, a valiant effort.

Page 10 CCGS Prep 1sts Prep 1sts 0 Lost to St Aloysius 48 On a rainy Saturday we came to school to play our first rugby game of We played against a big and competitive St Aloysius team who did very well in wet conditions. We had a disrupted warm up because someone was hurt in the game prior to ours, and our game was moved to Rugby 1. This probably suited St Aloysius more than us. Despite the score line, we did have a lot of fun in this game. It was fun when it started pouring in the middle of our game and just playing again after a long break was fun too. Our defence was good in patches, but we clearly need some improvement in this area. In attack we didn t have the ball very often but when we did, we used it well to open up chances for ourselves. We didn t keep it for very long as we lost the ball to strong defenders who rucked and cleaned out better than we did. The big field provided lots of space to run on and pass. We did enjoy this bigger field because there was room to spread out. However, the bigger field also let their players find bigger gaps in our defence. We had to deliver too many kick offs, with some falling into place and others not. We probably should have avoided kicking it to their best runner so often This week we can t wait to play against Redfield on our home ground. We will be positive and thorough throughout this game and look forward to having even more fun than last game! Report by Luis Sturm and Seb Plummer

Page 13 ARU INVITES FANS TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF AUSTRALIAN RUGBY THE AUSTRALIAN RUGBY SURVEY NOW OPEN The Australian Rugby Union is encouraging fans, players and stakeholders to join the conversation on the future of the game by completing The Australian Rugby Survey, which is now open. Feedback from the survey will be incorporated into Australian Rugby s next five year strategy from ARU CEO Bill Pulver said one of Australian Rugby s greatest strengths is its passionate fan base: We know we have a passionate and enthusiastic fan base full of ideas and views on Rugby from grassroots to the elite. The Australian Rugby Survey provides our fans and all Rugby stakeholders the opportunity to have their say on the future of our game and how we should prioritise our investment at all levels and formats of the game to coincide with our next broadcast cycle from Feedback from the survey will help inform this strategy, along with workshops with Rugby stakeholders nationally so we can assess the views of the Rugby community about all levels of Rugby including grassroots and club competitions, development competitions, Super Rugby, Sevens and Wallabies. The 10-minute survey is now online and will be open until Friday 5 June. The public survey follows extensive market research that has been undertaken about grassroots Rugby and interviews and workshops with Super Rugby club CEOs and Member Unions CEOs. Fans who complete The Australian Rugby Survey will also be able to register their interest in undertaking additional consultation activities to create the Australian Rugby Strategic Plan. As part of the strategic review, the ARU Board has also commissioned an independent cultural review of professional Rugby in Australia. ARU Chairman Michael Hawker said the review will be conducted by independent notfor-profit organisation, the St James Ethics Centre. "This cultural review will examine the extent to which the values of Rugby Union in Australia are aligned and being applied by both players and administrators in the professional game. In other words, we want to know, if what we do and what we say are aligned, said Hawker. Around 400 people involved in professional Rugby in Australia will participate in the cultural review through an online survey and one-to-one interviews. Findings and recommendations of the cultural review will be incorporated into the broader Strategic Plan for Australian Rugby, which is expected to be developed by November 2015.
