While disappointment can sometimes be the catalyst for early submission to hardship, participation in sport is thought to be a factor in nullifying this tendency. The occasionally adopted default to declare everyone a winner, regardless of the outcome, can de-signify the humbling value of winning and managing the disappointment of failure. As we know, losing does not predispose the individual to failure, instead, through wise coaching, players, and, by extension, the team, can benefit by rectifying and reversing performance by assiduous refinement of

2 skills. The ideal goal of the magical hours benchmark is probably beyond our young players at this stage, training twice a week and playing matches on Saturdays, however, the principle applies resilience and perseverance. While attempting to avoid a utopian ideal in this exposition, the principles speak for themselves. Consequently, I would like to encourage our boys to persevere through the challenges this season. Although some teams will have larger mountains to climb than others, their Rugby destiny is not determined in a season: Adam Freier, a former Wallaby hooker, began his Rugby career in the 13Ds playing in the blue and gold at Lower Queens Park. Andrea Folli MIC Rugby 1st XV The fixture against Sydney Grammar School at Weigall Oval on Saturday allowed the Trinity First XV the opportunity to build on a solid foundation established in earlier fixtures. Despite the rumours circulating about the quality of the opposition, the Trinity players maintained their focus and refused to lapse into complacency. The Sydney Grammar First Fifteen presented as determined opponents who treasured the ball and took advantage of the turn-over opportunities that Trinity errors provided them. Grammar successfully built on a series of phases through their rugged forwards to actively challenge Trinity s dominance in the game. However, through some sustained stages of controlled forward play, the Trinity backline frequently penetrated Grammar territory, scoring on four occasions. While Trinity remained in control of the game for most of the match, handling errors and uncurbed enthusiasm by some forwards who mistimed their runs off the half-back into defensive gaps, limited the score-trying chances on the day. Nevertheless, the support provided by the quick Trinity backs ensured that the Boys in Green maintained their lead throughout the game. We wish the First Fifteen success on Saturday away at St. Aloysius College Oval. Andrea Folli MIC Rugby 2nd XV On Saturday 20th May Trinity 2nd XV took on Barker 4th Grade at 10am on Trinity No.1 oval. Both teams put in a good account of themselves, but at the end of the day Trinity had a little too much fire power for Barker. The final score was Trinity 29 Barker 0. Tries were scored by Nikolas Ginis (11Ta) (2), Harris Vlahopoulos (12St) (2) and Jack Maher (11Yo). Conversions Thomas Corias (11Hi) (2). It was a

3 good opportunity to give a number of under 16 s and opens 4th s players some on field time. Thank you to the following boys for supporting on the bench, I hope you enjoyed your time on the field playing for the 2nd XV Zane Chesterfield (10He), Harrison Layton (10Du), Joshua Thanopoulos (12Hi), Matthew Brooks (12Hi) and Jacob Gadiel (11Mu). Andrew Payne 2nd XV Coach 15A After falling behind from an early try to Grammar, the 15As worked hard back into the game. Too many one out runners left the Trinity ball carrier unsupported and gave Sydney Grammar opportunities at the breakdown to turn over possession. A better second half performance saw Trinity s attack break open the defence with Kye Willoughby (9WH) sparking the attack into form. Lachlan White 15As Coach 15B A solid effort from the 15 Bs last weekend against Sydney Grammar. Trinity came out on top with a win of Tries were scored all throughout the team with Joseph Nassif (9He) scoring 2, William Beretov-Millar (9Ho) scoring 1, Joel Passerini (9Hi) scoring 1, Matthew Moore (10Ke) scoring 1 and Ben Newall (9Yo) scoring 1. A great performance by Matthew Moore (10Ke) with the kicking, converting 4 from the sideline. Great team effort all round, continue the intensity for the our next round against Kings. Angus Mooney (9La) 15C Saturday s fixture saw Trinity come up against a very enthusiastic Sydney Grammar side. Trinity dominated the first half scoring many unanswered tries, thanks to some great ball security from the forwards. Special mention must go to Zak Balzan (9Ta), Athan Koutsogiannis (9Yo) and Alexander Shannon (9We) for all bagging two tries each. Luca Dimeglio (9La) provided some excellent service and communication from scrum-half, ensuring that our forwards were working together to take on the defensive line. Credit must also go to Mr Cook for stepping in as coach in Mr Miller s absence. It was a great team effort and the boys are now ready to take on St Aloysius this Saturday. William Barlow (9Ar) 14A The 14 A s have continued their winning ways with a comfortable victory over Sydney Grammar. The forward pack asserted their dominance early, which set

4 a fantastic platform for Hunter Hannaford (8Du) to orchestrate some smooth backline plays. Early converted tries however, can lead to some white line fever and Trinity definitely demonstrated episodes of this. After half-time forwards captain Tyson Jackson (8Fo) managed to get the pack refocused and they played with more variety in the second half. The test will be to see if the team can start a game in that fashion. This week will provide more of a challenge as the team plays St Aloysius in the last trial game before the start of the CAS rugby season. Will Campbell 14As Co-Coach 13A The 13As met formidable resistance at the breakdown from their determined and proficient opponents at Grammar. However, strong ball carries and crucial turnovers allowed Trinity to get out to a handy half time lead. The second half focus was on improving the effort factors. Namely, ruck and tackle effectiveness. The team displayed renewed vigour in these facets in the second half. The role of the tackled ball carrier and the first and second man into the ruck improved markedly. This meant that Trinity increased its percentage and speed of possession. This was the platform for some exhilarating multiphase rugby. The ball was moved fluently and many of the team's eight tries were scored in the wide channels. In addition, the intent and effort in the 1 and 2 channel of the defence lifted in the second half. As a result the team was able to keep its opponent scoreless in that stanza. The challenge is to make the effort factors at the ruck and in defence the cornerstone of the team's performance this coming week. Trinity 50 [Tries; 2 Kai Roberts (8La), 2 Jaiden Timperi (7Hi), Sam Wade (7Ke), Harrison Evans (7La), Jude Robinson (7St), Hunter Goldsbrough (7Fo) Conversions; 5 Jude Robinson (7St) John Allen 13As Coach 13B The 13Bs were keen to test their mettle against yet another GPS school this round, albeit one that dominates the HSC scoreboard more than any rugby scoreboard. The teams were very evenly matched, and Grammar showed superior commitment to winning the space over the ball at the breakdown. However, superior size and aggression saw Trinity running in some amazing solo-effort tries. Nicholas Hubbard (7 WE) and William Blanchfield (8 HO) were stand out performers in the forwards, always making meters after contact and scoring three and two tries respectively. The second half saw Grammar come out with something to prove, and they delivered back-to-back tries running, including one from the kick off. Once Trinity decided to tackle with shoulders instead of arms, the tide again turned in our favour, with Ahmed Hijazi (8 WE) and Jonathan Fouad (8 WJ) able to burrow their way over the white line seeing Trinity win the match convincingly. Sam Wade (8 KE) and Nicholas Keogh (7 TA) shared the kicking responsibilities and both performed

5 well. The boys will have to work on their shape in attack and defence if they are to continue their winning ways next week against an in-form Aloy s outfit. Phillip Roser 13Bs Coach The Waratahs Visit Trinity Grammar hosted the Waratahs on Number 1 Oval On Tuesday. A number of teams, ranging from the U15s to the Opens had the opportunity to be coached by some of the Waratah players, who provided some professional touches to training and drills. Mr Cameron Blades, a former Wallaby front row player and current Waratah forwards coach, remained behind and assisted the 3rd and 4th XV coaches at the Opens afternoon field session. As a Rugby community, we are grateful for their contribution to our players rugby experience, as well as the involvement of Messrs Lachlan White and Jayson Brewer in organising the day. Friends of Rugby Meeting The FOR Committee will be meeting again on Tuesday 13th June at 6:30pm in the Braga Room (The Music Department Office opposite the Terrace Room).
