NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 2 RUGBY CONVENOR Senior Rugby results v Redfield College CCGS 1 st XV 17 defeated Redfield 12 CCGS 16s 10 defeated by Redfield 48 CCGS 15s 26 defeated Redfield 7 CCGS 14s 22 defeated Redfield 10 CCGS 13s 10 defeated by Redfield 25 WOW. What great day for CCGS Rugby last Saturday at Redfield College. Out of five games played, CCGS managed three wonderful victories against teams who were premiers last year. This demonstrates improvement across the board and a terrific attitude by our Boys each week. The 13s match was disrupted with an early injury and the match was moved to a smaller field. The match was keenly contested with Redfield controlling the rucks a little better to run out deserved winner. The 14s are the big improver this season, they are playing with much more intensity and purpose and thoroughly deserved their victory. The 15s have a small squad but are not short on talent and turned the tables on their grand final opponent from last year with a dominant display of running Rugby. The 16s played with much more intent this week against a very strong opponent but went down after demonstrating a strong willingness to compete. The 1 st XV match was another high intense spectacle with two teams demonstrating a real willingness to run the ball amongst fierce defence. A match not out of place in division 1 and one that could have gone either way, the CCGS boys showed real grit and determination to run out deserved winner This was Redfield College s first loss on their main field in 4 years. Well done Boys. This Saturday we make the track down to Sydney University for our clash with St. Andrew s College. Up until 2005, SACS played in ISA division 2 and our two Schools played many memorable days of Rugby. They are now returning after 7 years in ISA division 1 and will provide tough opposition for all our teams. Good luck all teams. Sam Collett played with the Central Coast Under 18s last week and that team won the country championship for the second year running. Congratulations Sam. Photographs will be taken at the RLC before the games on Saturday 1st June. All players are asked to be ready early for your photograph. The School is still looking for Parent volunteers to assist with the running of BBQ at home games in term 2 and 3. If you can help out in any way please contact Paul Geddes by on pgeddes@ccgs.nsw.edu.au

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 4 CCGS 1sts XV CCGS 17 Defeated Redfield 12 (Tries: Collett, Slade, Harrod. Goal: Shearwood ) A monumental game of hard give no quarter rugby. Many said that it was the best game of rugby they had seen in a long time. No team took a sizeable lead in the match. The score board read: Redfield 7-0 CCGS Redfield 7-5 CCGS - try to Sam Collett CCGS 10-7 Redfield - try to Edward Slade Half time with CCGS in front Redfield CCGS CCGS Redfield - try to Josh Harrod; Full time a win to CCGS - goal to Max Shearwood Intermingled with the scoring were displays of huge defensive commitment and attacking flare by all the boys. Rugby was the winner!!!!

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 5 CCGS Under 16 CCGS 16s 12 Defeated by Redfield 48 (Tries: Bain, Kernan. Goal: Barnett ) What a great game of rugby. Our boys didn t give up playing this week. The score line doesn t show it but we were attacking the opposition s line for the last 10 minutes of this game. We were unfortunate to convert this too much need points. Our team was short players which meant that every boy had to play a full game, with a number of 15 s backing up. This was tough on all players but they did it and I congratulate them for this effort. We ran in 2 well deserved tries. Dylan scoring first after a strong forward attack had set up play. He charged on over the line with his forward pack driving him on. The second try was scored by Vaugh. Our back line, when given room, is very dangerous and they attacked the space which opened up in the Redfield defence. This try indicated a big improvement right across the park by these boys from the previous week. The forwards showed more determination at the contact zone, thus giving the backs the space they need. We know that we have a long way to go but if we can repeat this performance and the effort again I am confident that this team will make people look up and watch. We have St Andrews this weekend and a repeat effort may just see us win this match. All boys need to committee to the training as this is essential in developing and establishing team play and personal fitness. CCGS Under 15 CCGS 15s 26 Defeated Redfield 7 (Tries:. Goals: ) If there s one way to wind up your opposition, it s to rub the last 2 years results in their face. We arrived at Redfield College to find a delay to our kick off due to several injuries, this gave us time to peruse the match day program. In this program, it kindly reminded us of 4 losses to Redfield in the past 2 years. The Game: both sides agreed to a 14 aside game as we both had injuries and players unavailable. CCGS started strongly and after 10 minutes were leading (according to the erroneous scoreboard) 70:0 with an excellently worked try down the left. The positive play continued with great support and communication throughout the team. Half time arrived with CCGS leading 14:0. The second half continued in much the same vein with Redfield having few chances and scoring a fortuitous try from a charge down in our 22. Redfield started to get a little mouthy after the try but this new found bravado was soon put to rest by Josh Sheridan with a spleen crushing tackle on the largest U15 anyone has ever seen. The game finished 26:7 which should give the boys a massive confidence boost ahead of the (possible) Grand Final warm up against St Andrews College next Saturday. An excellent game boys, Well Done!

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 6 CCGS Under 14 CCGS 14s 22 Redfield 10 (Tries: Robson, Ireland, Oak, Brown, Chettle. Goal Oak) An excellent game was played by our Under 14s. Again, starting on the right foot, we played in their half, creating pressure by forcing them backwards at every phase. Our ability to change defence into attack helped the score advance steadily to 17-5 at half time. The forwards were steadfast in their rucking and mauling, even though the Redfield boys were quicker to the breakdown and forced a number of turnovers. Our scrum over-powered their tight unit not allowing them clean ball from the base of the scrum. Our back-line and loose forwards shut down their main attack over and over, forcing Redfield to change tactics - and to make more errors.

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 7 CCGS Under 14 The boys seem to be making it a habit of allowing an even score-line in the second half - a try a piece in a very tight affair. Torrid defence from both sides and an even attack made an enthralling half with both teams giving their all. Congratulations boys: 3 of 12

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 8 CCGS Under 13 CCGS 13s 10 lost to Redfield 25 (Tries: Scarr, Fleetwood) The match finally got started after an injury to an opposition player in the first minute. This was on the back of an injury in the previous game, so needless to say, we started later than expected. The game had to be moved to a smaller field with fewer players, so this made things a little difficult. We started the match well and held Redfield out until the last five minutes of the half. They ran in three quick tries, making it difficult to get back into the match. The boys played much better in the second half, finishing with two tries apiece. The first was a result of an excellent intercept from Jon F and the second from Tim S after an elusive run through the oppositions defence. Our performance at the breakdown was a significant improvement on the week previous and I was very happy with our set pieces in the scrum and lineout. We will need to work hard on our defence this week, particularly one on one tackles. We have a big match against St Andrews on Saturday and look forward to a big week at training and a good game against St Andrews.

Page 9 RUGBY NEWSLETTER FROM THE PREP CONVENOR Prep Rugby Saturday 18th May CCGS Under 9s defeated Tudor House forfeit CCGS Under 10s 14 lost to Tudor House 39 The Mighty Nines and Terrific Tens made the long trek down to Moss Vale on Saturday to play Tudor House. They were welcomed by crisp mountain air and a slightly disorganised opposition as Tudor House could only field eight Under 9 players while several of their Under 10 players arrived late. The Tudor 9s were forced to forfeit but the teams played a competitive eight a side match with CCGS displaying rapidly improving skills in many facets of the game. The CCGS 10s played immediately afterwards and were beaten but far from disgraced. After a poor first half in which several soft tries were conceded, they fought back bravely in the second stanza, showing steel in defence and enterprise in attack. A win is just around the corner boys and girls keep listening to your coaches and train hard! As a result of parental request and unbridled player enthusiasm, the Under 10s will now train on Fridays as well as Wednesdays with the second session being between 3:15 and 4:15 pm. The coaches and managers would like to acknowledge the wonderful support shown by all parents so far this season. It has made a big difference and is appreciated.

NEWSLETTER NO 6 Page 10 CCGS Under 10 Under 10s 14 Tudor House 39 TEAM CAPTAIN: Louis Sturm VICE-CAPTAIN: Max Rattray FORWARDS: Jesse Venner, Louis Sturm, Oliver Peres, Hamish Comber, Hudson Bush and Ellis Murray. BACKS: Tim Wilkins, Noah Stewart, Seb Plummer, Max Rattray and Jack Jenkins. This week we made the trek to Moss Vale to play against Tudor House. Our boys are improving each week and this was most evident in their sterling second half. The final score was to Tudor House but our boys fought back in the second half having most of the possession and scoring a try. We saw great runs up the field this week by Jesse Venner, Noah Stew- art and Jack Jenkins. Noah Stewart and Tim Wilkins also made great saves picking up the ball after a Tu- dor kick or catching on the full and running hard. Some great tackling was made this week by Hudson Bush, Ellis Murray and Jesse Venner. Seb Plummer made a great kick to help move us up the field as well as two great conversions. Our tries this week were scored by Hamish Comber and Hudson Bush with great tenacity and passion. Seb Plummer, Max Rattray, Ellis Murray and Louis Sturm were all tackling well. This week Oliver Peres and Ellis Murray had a great game, getting really involved. A big thank you goes to the Parents and Supporters on the sideline, for traveling down to Moss Vale and supporting the boys each game. We can feel the win is close boys so hang on, it s on it way Best and Fairest Player Award: 3 points Jesse Venner; 2 points Noah Stewart and Hamish Comber; 1 point Oliver Peres, Ellis Murray and Louis Sturm. TRAINING: The under 10 s will now have two training sessions each week and they will be on Wednesday pm and Friday afternoons pm. Please wear appropriate gear to both sessions.

Page 11 RUGBY NEWSLETTER CCGS Under 9 CCGS Under 9s This week saw the under 9s make the long trek down to Bowral to play Tudor House. Kick off was scheduled for 9am so most players left the coast at 5:30am to make sure they were there in plenty of time, with a handful electing to go down the night before. As a result, Coach Dobbin had all 13 players on the field at 8:15am running them through warm up drills in preparation for big game. Well done! A big thank you to all the players, parents and grandparents. It was extremely disappointing, and a little embarrassing for Tudor House, that the local team could only manage 8 players by 9:05am! We couldn't wait any longer. We had not travelled all this way just to browse through antique stores, we were ready to play rugby! A quick pow-wow with the Tudor House coach and it was decided to forge on regardless, eight a side with Grammar having almost as many players off the field as on. Our team played well, and showed great determination and commitment. Austin seemed to be everywhere on the field, running the ball well and once again showed great tenacity in defense. Jackson also showed commitment in defense with a couple of long chase downs. Toby and Austin combined well, setting Sam up for a try late in the first half. Lochi, River and Jake all had terrific runs taking the play back up the field. With so many reserves, it was tough pulling players off but there were no complaints, and everyone understood. Well done under 9s! Your commitment to CCGS and each other is commended. Keep listening to Coach and do your best and you will keep on improving week after week. Lets tighten up our play at the rucks, try to spread the ball out a little wider and continue to support each other. Result: Win by forfeit Captain: Spencer Holden Vice Captain: Lochie McBride Coaches Award: Austin Atherton Best and Fairest: Austin Atherton - 3; Sam Wolstonholme - 2; Toby Kitchen 1
