1 YAVERLAND HERD REDUCTION 28 October 2017 Worcester Livestock Market, WR4 0SQ FOREWORD The is the second major reduction sale of the Yaverland herd. Our herd sire, Ashton Jethro, was recommended to us by Peter Close, has five major show placings and has this year produced us our 100th calf. He will soon earn his retirement! He has done us proud. The herd is run with the sole intention of preserving some of the older more traditional lines on the Island whilst combining a smaller stockier animal too to improve beef potential for people who like to grow it faster. Last year we flew up to Scotland to select Fishwick Pascal for this purpose. We believe the two bulls to be a great combination. The first Pascal bull calf to drop is a fine looking chap we are watching with great interest. We feed a lower input diet as conservation is our main purpose. The herd grazes on conservation land in the summer and lives on hay and vitamins and calves receive low levels of concentrate to support through weaning in the winter. They are not fat for showing but if that is what people are looking for they very soon could be. The main reason for the slight reduction sale is to ensure grazing continues to remain plentiful and to share some of the good lines we have duplicates of. We would also like to improve equipment so we can increase winter feed quality. We have selected some cows that have some of Jethro s best offspring at foot in the hope some other people might produce them and even show them. Many of the cows are from lines we really think should keep going for a long time yet so we hope they will form new production herds. There are some lovely younger cows so there is a very good mix. We have included four great Jethro bulling heifers we can spare only because their mother has given us another. We hope they too will produce lovely Fishwick Pascal sons and daughters. Also offered for sale are a number of low input fed bulls from last year and three animals that were not productive last year. These are here so our transport is more cost effective however some of these too are quite nice and they are all looking for buyers. All cattle are BVD tested and routinely vaccinated. The heifers are IBR marker vaccinated. All cattle will be TB tested prior to sale
