I know of at least one member who had to rescue cattle from rising flood waters; not an experience to be repeated. Undeterred by the weather the stalwart members who enjoy showing their cattle have been out in force, using agricultural shows large and small around the country to promote Longhorns. The Society has also been busy in this respect, with a stand at Beef Expo, our now customary stand in the central concourse of the cattle lines at the Royal Show, and a new stand adjacent to the judging rings at the Royal Welsh show. Both Royal shows have been a great opportunity for me to August 2007 immerse myself in the world of Longhorns and I have managed to meet many members. I hope to meet many more of you at the AGM in November. Details are included in this newsletter. Foot and Mouth has had nationwide repercussions for Longhorn breeders with farm visits and production sales being cancelled. When new dates have been confirmed for these rescheduled events they will be posted on the website, or ring the office for more details. On the back cover are the advertising rates for the 2008 Journal. We have managed to hold prices for another year so I hope you will take advantage of advertising in our flagship publication that is such an excellent marketing tool for the breed. 2 Page 2 Page 15 Chairman s Message Sales 2007 It has been another trying time for livestock farmers all around the country with the threat of Foot and Mouth Disease (at the time of writing the all clear is yet to be declared, although movement restrictions are being reduced), the terrible damage wreaked by the flooding, some of which will take years to put right, and the very difficult harvesting conditions for both forage and combinable crops. There has been the delay of one key sale so far and more may follow, although there seems to be light at the end of that tunnel with moves taking place to rearrange their timings. Please visit the website for up to date news on this and other Longhorn matters. The current escalation of cereal prices will hit livestock farmers hard and provides a reminder of the advantage of keeping a breed, such as the Longhorn, that relies mainly on forage, with a low concentrate feed requirement. On a more positive note, the Show season was a great success up to the end of July; events following that unfortunately having been abruptly curtailed. There has been a good array of names amongst the prizes and it has been encouraging to see some new faces in the show lines along with the regular exhibitors. Also on the positive side, Debbie Dann has settled in seamlessly and enthusiastically as our full time Breed Secretary and her role is set to expand when we put all the administration under one roof as she takes over registrations and accounts from Libby Henson and Grassroots from 1st September. There is not space here to do justice to all Libby has done for the Society and there will be more to follow on this, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank Libby for her sterling work for the Longhorn Cattle Society over her many years of involvement. John Hedges Society AGM 17 November 2007 This will take place at the Shrewton Sports and Social Club, Shrewton, Wiltshire, commencing at 2pm. In the case of Foot & Mouth, in 2002 we were able to secure some derogations for holdings with 'rare breeds'. Most important was exemption from the contiguous cull. In the aftermath of the last outbreak this was formalised within Europe, and a register established of holdings with rare, traditional and localised breeds which might be at risk, and which could be eligible for any derogation available in the event of a future outbreak. In order to be included in this register your MUST apply, if you have not already done so. Application is very simple and does not commit you to anything, but may help if things get out of hand. If you have access to the internet go to If you do not have access to the internet please ask someone else to register for you, or call me at the office and I will register on your behalf. Time is of the essence. To register you will need your holding number, business name and address and the number of registered animals you currently own.
