1 Auctioneers: Cooper & Tanner, Symonds & Sampson WEDNESDAY 23 RD AUGUST SALE TIME: 11.00AM SPECIAL DISPERSAL SALE OF THE ATTWOODS HERD OF PEDIGREE DAIRY SHORTHORNS Attwoods Tabia 2 nd VG86 Lot 721 Frome Market Standerwick Frome Somerset BA11 2QB Tel: Fax: info@fromelivestock.com Website:

2 FOREWORD Welcome to Frome Livestock Market and this very special sale of the Attwoods Herd of Pedigree Dairy Shorthorns. These quality cattle are a credit of Keith and Susannah Mannerings and we highly recommend attendance to the sale. Frome Livestock Auctioneers appreciate being instructed to sell these quality Pedigree Shorthorns as well as their Commercial Holstein Friesians which are being dispersed through our weekly sales until the end of September. Trevor Rowland Auctioneer on behalf of Frome Livestock Auctioneers ************** Susannah and I have both been involved in agriculture from an early age, and in 1998 we were successful in obtaining a farm tenancy from Hampshire County Council enabling us to farm in our own right and to build a sound, family dairy farm near Winchester. We started with no stock at all, but in a very short while we were milking 60 cows. In those early days, we ran a flying herd, increasing our herd with strong traditional types of cattle, often looking for 4 th or 5 th lactation cows, feeling confident these would last well in our system. With the outbreak of Foot and Mouth in 1999 and the increasing threat from TB, we started to believe that a closed herd, breeding our own replacements, was the way forward. It was at this time that we visited Susannah s distant relative, David Spalton, with the Maxton herd of Dairy Shorthorns. We came home from that visit thinking that the beautiful cattle we had seen would really suit our system. We purchased our foundation Shorthorns from the Cotley and Chicklade dispersal sales and with Susannah qualified as an AI technician, we started down a path where the Shorthorns became an important part of our herd. These cattle are also responsible for our daughter Florence becoming besotted with the Dairy industry, showing a real stockman s eye and ability from an early age. Her enthusiasm has led us to the show ring with the Attwoods herd of Dairy Shorthorns. She has competed at many local shows, but also ventured further afield to bigger shows such as the South West Dairy Event and the National Show at Cheshire and has recently gained Supreme Champion Honours twice this season. It is with a great deal of sadness that this chapter in our lives is coming to a close, but with the council s policy of short term tenancies to encourage new entrants, we must move on. We are moving to a small farm in Kent, taking some young stock with us, no longer milking cows but with a new set of challenges before us. The cows that are in the ring today represent our dreams and ambitions and we will look back on this 20-year period in our lives with immense pride, and we hope that you can see the potential in these animals and that they will in turn serve you well. Keith Mannerings August 2017

3 HERD HEALTH AND MANAGEMENT BOVINE TB: The herd is in an annual testing area Last test 31/07/2017 All Clear No TB reactors ever recorded HERD HEALTH: The herd is vaccinated for Lepto & BVD; the latest booster was given in late May The herd is naturally Johne s free and there is no evidence of IBR through bulk sampling. HERD MANAGEMENT: The herd is NMR milk recorded monthly. Cows are routinely dried off using Cepravin Dry Cow and Orbeseal. DIY AI is carried out Sires have been sourced through Red Cattle Genetics and Cogent. Our aim has been for a high forage diet, using forage maize and grass; with any concentrate fed through the herringbone parlour to balance the ration. Concentrates are fed according to yield (0.24kg/l). As we are on a dry, chalk farm, we extend grazing for as long as possible with cows being loose-housed in winter. All replacements are also home-reared. Costings have been carried out by Martin Attwell of Attwell Associates for the last 15 years. Our local vets are Endell Farm Vets, Salisbury. We use them for Routine visits, TB testing, call outs and Medical Supplies and they have no hesitation in recommending our herd as a dispersal of genuine cows with an outstanding level of welfare. AVERAGES: The whole herd 305d average (Cows/Heifers) is 7,300kg In isolation, the Shorthorn figures show: - The Dairy Shorthorn Cow 305d average is 6,717kg The Dairy Shorthorn Heifer 305d average is 5,774kg
