1 Western Jets Football Club Developing young men in the west to meet their full potential Club Major Sponsor Competition Sponsor Major Associate Sponsors WESTERN SUBURBS Jetstream December 2009 Jets move into AFL System The Western Jets have three more players on AFL lists after Jack Fitzpatrick was selected with pick number 50 by the Melbourne Football Club in the 2009 national draft. Jack joins Trent McKenzie on an AFL list after Trent was selected as one of the 12 eligible seventeen year olds to be selected by the Gold Coast this year. Both players previously had been identified with outstanding talent to play at this level having both been through AFL/AIS academy squads which toured South Africa. It s a terrific achievement for Jack after battling Chronic fatigue syndrome for a number of years. As a bottom age player Trent McKenzie displayed outstanding skills and an ability to play the game and was one of the first players listed by the Gold Coast Football Club. One of the stories from this years draft/rookie draft was the selection of Sudanese born Majak Daw. Majak and his family (8 brothers and sisters) sought refugee status in 2000 living in Eygpt for 3 years. They then sought to migrate to Australia in Majak played his first game of Australian Football in 2005 for Taylors Lakes FC U14. The family moved to Werribee in 2006 with Majak participating for the first time at the Western Jets in the Ted Whitten U16 legends program. Daw s progress since that time has been significant, a tall strongly built player, Majak has always displayed outstanding athleticism and with rapid improvement in his football know how he was rewarded at the rookie draft when selected by North Melbourne FC. Presentation Night The Western Jets recently held their presentation the Yarraville club with Sean Tighe taking out the prestigious Barry Round Medal as the Jets Best and Fairest winner. After what was a closely fought battle for most of the night Sean prevailed by 11 votes from Matthew Notman with Scott Sherlock finishing third. Johnny Rayner and Dion Lawson rounded out the top 5. Callum Matheson was named as the U15 player of the year and Will Hoskin- Elliott U16 player of the year. Other winners included; Most Courageous Scott Sherlock, Most Improved Dion Lawson, Most Consistent Johnny Rayner, Coach's Award Joe Halloran and the Trainer's Award went to Sean Tighe. 5 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 3 Crofts Reserve Stage 2 Redevelopment Begins Following the successful stage 1 ground lighting project which was completed in October 2008 the redevelopment of the Crofts Reserve pavilion has began. Expectations are that the upgrade to the pavilion will be complete in time for the start of the 2010 season. Work commenced on the pavilion a few weeks ago and has already progressed significantly. Western Jets Region Manager, Shane Sexton said I m thrilled with the commencement of works and looking forward to the completion of stage 2. Crofts Reserve is an ideal venue for the Western Jets with 2 ovals, an established pavilion and has easy access via the freeway network. When completed additions to the pavilion will include a gymnasium, coach s rooms, medical rooms, property, meeting and office space in addition to a viewing room which will overlook oval number one. The venue is currently being used by Altona North Cricket Club, The Agility Dog Club and the Jets. Mr Sexton acknowledged the significant support the Western Jets had received for the project. The redevelopment is being jointly funded by AFL Victoria and the Jets aligned VFL club Williamstown. Another major contribution is being made the Burbank Group. The Burbank Group have designed and are building the extension at cost price. Eddie Sanfilippo, Managing Director of the company said. I m delighted to be supporting this project because it will support our youth in the western suburbs. Our company also see this venture as a community benefit for the people of the west. Mr Sexton also thanked the Hobson s Bay City Council which had allowed the Western Jets to relocate to Crofts Reserve at the beginning of the 2008 season. Altona North Ward Councillor Michael Raffoul said. The Council is proud to be working in partnership with the Western Jets. Council is a big supporter of sport in the community. The Council and Western Jets Football Club are working to create a state of the art pavilion at Crofts Reserve, said Cr Raffoul. The works will not only benefit the Western Jets, but visiting clubs, spectators and local residents. Research shows that 120 hours of driving practice as a learner dramatically reduces the risk of a young driver being involved in a serious accident when they have obtained their licence. The Western Jets are again participating in the TAC s L120: Experience not Excuses Program. All players who have not yet acquired their licence will be required to gain 120 hours of driving practice prior to gaining their probationary licence. The Western Jets will again monitor this practice. Schools within the region will also be participating in the program as part of the Western Jets wider community initiative. The Jets will again participate in the TAC make a pledge program New Staff Members in 2010 Every year sees changes to the Jets staff and this season is no exception. Paddy Steinfort has come to the club and will take on the role of midfield coach in Paddy played his junior football at the Oakleigh Chargers where he won All Australian selection in He also won the Larke medal as the best player in the U18 national championships. He then went on to be drafted by Richmond at pick 16 in the 1996 national draft. Paddy was part of the Richmond reserves premiership in 1997 and was at the club until the end of the 2001 season. From there he played at Coburg for two seasons before moving to Adelaide to play for West Adelaide in 2004 and Off the field Paddy has been associated with Leading Teams, an organisation that helps improve team performance by developing leaders and empowering players. He helped set up the Leading Teams program in New Zealand and brings a wealth of knowledge to the Jets. He will take over as midfield and ruck coach for the 2010 season. Other staff to come on board for the 2010 season include Scott Taylor who will help Jesse Campisi with fitness, Matt Pearce, Rod Lawson (runner), Mario Lirosi (U15 assistant coach), Alex Petrovski (U16 fitness) and trainers Aleara Wallace, Aleisha Stewart, Georgia Turville and Ashley Sarpi. Pre-Season up and running Pre-season training is now in full swing with nearly 200 players training in the U15, U16 and U18 programs. Everything is progressing well which will see the U15 take part in matches against other regions in first term school holidays. Likewise the U16 are preparing for the state U16 championships in April-May and the U18 for the TAC Cup season which starts on March 20.
