SBHS Football Vision Inspiring excellence in Football, on and off the field. SBHS Statement of Purpose SBHS is committed to developing boys into men who value integrity, excellence and who will serve their community and the world with competence, confidence and compassion. SBHS Values Commitment to learning excellence and creative thinking Sense of community and citizenship Appreciation of diversity Commitment to responsible leadership and teamwork Devotion to realising individual potential Respect for each other and our environment Esteem for our heritage SBHS Sport Philosophy SBHS students enjoy a wide range of sports designed to provide challenge, build friendships and which enable students to practice leadership, set and achieve goals and interact with their peers. Sport allows boys to work together as a team, to experience the joy of success and to learn to be gracious in defeat. Sport is an important ingredient in the formation of a student s identity and self-esteem. Most significantly, participation in organised school sport allows boys to feel a sense of belonging. SBHS is committed to a policy of participation with all students encouraged to take part in both a summer and winter activity to ensure they maintain a high level of fitness and balance their academic application. Teams are coached, managed and supervised by members of staff who may also coordinate the input of specialist coaches, parent volunteers and old scholars. The highest standards of sportsmanship, fair play, behaviour and dress are expected from all students representing SBHS and they do so with great pride and obvious spirit. SBHS is a member GPS and as such abides by the AAGPS Code of Practice Page 4

Player Commitment Player development is key both for individuals and the growth of SBHS Football, however, schoolwork is also important. Please approach your coach if you have any concerns. Players commit for the full season Teams are entered into GPS competitions/leagues based on the numbers of players registering. Football players in Year 7 upwards are therefore expected to commit to both training and match days throughout terms 2 and 3. Lack of player commitment and parent support can put teams in jeopardy and the school reputation at risk. The Football season The Football season runs primarily in terms 2 and 3. Tours and camps usually fall outside of this during the school holidays. Preseason training First and second Xl players also have preseason training. Balancing club and school commitments Club players are encouraged to talk to their coach with regards to balancing their Football commitments. Procedure in Event of Illness / Unable to Attend Training Please remember training sessions are planned in advance, based on team numbers, which includes your involvement. Players that are unwell and unable to attend a training session must phone their coach in advance. Match day absence Players unable to attend a match must phone their coach ASAP. If the coach is unavailable please phone the Technical Director Jason Hayhurst or Master-In-Charge Mr. Tesoriero. Early notification is essential, especially on match day, as absences can negatively impact the team structure and alternative plans may need to be made. Highlight: You must contact your Coach if you will be absent from match day Uniform Players are to wear the school Football kit, which includes shirt, shorts and socks - available from the school uniform shop. Full tracksuit should be worn to and from games. Senior squad to wear full school uniform. Players should also bring adequate water / recovery drinks and wear sunscreen. Highlight: Senior Squads - full school uniform Juniors full tracksuit In addition players must have Football boots and shin pads (compulsory), available from most major sports stores. NB. Referees have the right to prevent a player without shin pads from playing matches. Page 5

SBHS Kit and Colours 1st & 2nd match kit SBHS match kit 1st & 2nd training kit Player development - our future First Xl Football development pathway: SBHS has incorporated the Football Federation Australia (FFA) National Football Curriculum into its development framework for the school s football program. As a general outline, the National Football Curriculum distinguishes 4 training Building Blocks to provide practical guidelines for coaches working at all levels of youth development in order to help answer questions such as: What are the mental and physical characteristics of players in the various development stages? What type of practices are best suited for specific age groups and why? How long should a session go for and how often should I train? How do I plan and design my sessions? What are points of interest when I coach my team during games? With the aim to: Develop technically proficient players Develop tactically aware, proactive players Transform the physical and direct style of youth football in Australia to a successful style based upon technique and creativity To instill a lifelong passion and love for football in young players To create a real football culture in Australia. The result of this approach must be future generations of players with the skills and habits to make Australia a successful contender on the World stage, Page 6

The 4 training building blocks are: The Discovery Phase The Skill Acquisition Phase The Game Training Phase The Performance Phase The Discovery Phase The focus of this phase is the general introduction of football to the player and to initially focus on the following skills: 1v1 Running with the Ball Striking the Ball The Skill Acquisition Phase The aim is to provide a solid foundation of technical skill. If a player does not gain this skill foundation during this phase it will be very difficult to make it up later. Skills in focus during this phase are: First Touch 1 v 1 Running with the Ball Striking the Ball The Game Training Phase The Game Training Phase has the objective of preparing players for senior football by teaching them to apply functional game skills in a team setting using as the preferred formation. Another objective is to develop tactical awareness, perception and decision making through a game-related approach to training. Skills in focus within this phase are: Playing out form the Back Midfield Plan Attacking Disturbing/Pressuring Defending/Recapturing the Ball Transitioning (BP>BPO) Transitioning (BPO>BP) The Performance Phase Page 7

The aim is to prepare teams for a competitive environment where winning has become the main objective. In this phase, players train to focus on solving football problems, based on match analysis. Integration of football conditioning is also a key part of the phase. Skills in focus during this phase are: Big Games Middle Games Small Games More information on the FFA s building blocks can be found as follows: FFA Building Blocks/Development Plan The FFA National Football Curriculum can be found as follows: FFA National Football Curriculum Application of Building Blocks The following broadly illustrates how the Building Blocks will be applied throughout the different age groupings. However, this may vary according to factors such as: pre-existing skill levels, number of teams/players, speed of learning, etc. Performance Phase Game Training Phase Skill Acquisition Phase Discovery Phase U13 U14 U15 U16 Opens A A A A 1st B B B B 2nd C C C C 3rd D D D D 4th E E E E 5th F F F F 6th G G G G 7th H H H H 8th I I I I 9th J J J J 10th Generally, boys in the A/B teams will possess certain technical skills which allows them to be responsive to more performance related aspects of the game. Gradually, as boys progress through the age groups, they will naturally move through the different phases of the Building Blocks after consolidating what they learned from prior seasons. Page 8

Match / Game Day Players should arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to kick off for the benefit of the team and health and welfare of individual players. Prompt arrival enables the coach to confirm they have sufficient players for the match and when necessary adjust the team structure accordingly and do the final team briefing. Most importantly prompt arrival ensures all players are properly warmed up to minimize the risk of injury. All teams All players MUST stay for at least the first half of the next match on your field. It is important for the school that all players support their fellow team mates and to show High Spirit by being vocal in your support of the next team, no matter what age group or ability. All SBHS coaches, players & parents will conduct themselves in a manner that enhances the reputation of football in Australia. Coaches Deliver quality coaching Ensure safety and well-being of players Adopt role-model behaviour, specifically a professional attitude and positive approach Treat everyone equally Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every player regardless of their gender, ability, race, colour, religion, language, politics, national or ethnic origin Promote equality & stamp out discrimination, harassment or abuse in any form Value each player as an individual and develop them to reach their full potential Create a positive environment in which individuals feel motivated to participate and achieve Regularly review progress, learning and commitment Provide opportunities and reward commitment to competent players Recognise and maximize potential of exceptionally competent players Provide specialist skills to fast-track but not at the expense of a player s overall football education All training to be age specific Ensure a good balance between player, parent and the school s expectations Have good player and parent rapport and adhere to the schools code of conduct Adhere to GPS and FFA code of ethics. Players Should be motivated and willing to learn Take instruction and direction. Adopt a professional approach Adhere to GPS and FFA code of ethics. Therefore, players are expected to uphold general school rules regarding behaviour and dress. Page 16

Parent and Guardian Guidelines / Code of Behaviour Parents and guardians can have a huge influence on children s attitudes and enjoyment of the game, so please be positive and encouraging. Children play Football because they love the game and therefore it should be fun. Don t expect too much to soon Players do not respond to highly critical adults Players should play because they want to not to please an adult Focus on success and performance remember Football is a team sport what did you contribute? Praise effort as well as improvement Promote effort and teamwork learn to accept results and be better for next time Do not get involved in negative shouting from the touchline Remove verbal and physical abuse from the game Never shout or ridicule for mistakes/losing lead by example applaud good play for your team and the opposition Avoid coaching your child during the game Recognise the efforts of all players, not just the most talented Respect the decisions of match officials and teach players to do the same Players should be able to express themselves, on and off the pitch, without the fear of rebuke from parents or coaches Recognise and value importance of your coach Adhere to the Football Code of Conduct. Please ensure that any medication needed to be taken by your child before, during or after training is readily available. When collecting players from the schools coaching sessions we ask you to please wait, at a distance, for the coach to finish his session/talk. We are sure you will recognize the need for these guidelines to ensure the safety and well being of all players in our care. Match Day Assistance You may have noticed a few dedicated volunteers, whose tireless efforts ensure our boys home ground matches can take place. So that our coaching team can concentrate on the players parents are asked to please get involved when you can specifically helping with the nets and corner flags. Highlight: Please volunteer to help to dress the fields with nets and corner flags Page 17

SBHS Football Committee Join our team of dedicated volunteers helping to put SBHS Football on the map! There are lots of ways to get involved regularly, occasionally or just on game day. The SBHS Football Committee needs you. We are a dedicated group of parents committed to the growth of Football in our community. Our aim is to provide support to the Football program and coaching team, raise funds for expenditure that falls outside the School budget and cheer on our players on match day. There are lots of ways to get involved, regularly, occasionally or just on match days. Join the committee, offer assistance for specific community or fundraising activities or simply come and meet us at our meetings and events. You don't need to be an expert in Football... in fact we leave that to our very capable coaching team! Contact: SBHS Football Committee (sbhsfootball@gmail.com) School Football Events Fundraising and social events The SBHS Football Committee hosts major events during the season including the End of Season Football Dinner. These social events for the SBHS Football community help raise valuable funds to support our rapidly growing Football program. All school families are invited; you don t need to be registered to play Football to join in the family fun. Football Parking The SBHS Football Programme is allocated football parking duties throughout the year to help raise funds for the P&C and various subcommittees. Parking is held whenever there is a public sporting event at the Sydney Football Stadium or the Sydney Cricket Grounds. Generally, the funds raised find their way back to the school s sporting programmes, including Football. The Football Committee sends a call for volunteers a week or so before a parking event and parents and boys within the football programme should volunteer to participate. End of season celebration dinner The annual Football Dinner is a wonderful occasion for families to celebrate SBHS Football season; players and parents from all teams across the school are warmly invited. This year our end of season dinner will be held on the afternoon of the First Xl derby against Sydney Grammar School for the first time. Tickets will be available closer to the event.
