1 Barrow Hedgelines Issue th October 2017 Editor: Miss Laura Smith READING EYFS PARENT WORKSHOP On Wednesday 11 th October many Reception parents attended the Reading Workshop. As usual the feedback was very positive. Many parents were in awe of the three Reception Teachers and commented on what an art Early Years teaching is! We hope to see as many parents and carers attend the next workshop on Early Writing (Thursday 23 rd November at 6:30-8:00pm). HAPPY S CIRCUS By Sarah Woods (Nursery Teacher and PTA Link) On Monday evening Happy's Circus came to Barrow Hedges. A wonderful evening of entertainment was had by all who attended. The spectacular red and yellow big top was filled with laughter and cheers from children and adults alike. The children were talking about how much they enjoyed their evening for days afterwards. HARVEST FESTIVAL Our thanks go to the PTA for organising this fantastic event and raising over 2000 for the school. HENLEY FORT Y6 TRIP By Oliver Willsher & Nicola Cottage (Willow Class) Thank you to everybody who made a donation towards our Harvest Festival. The Rotary Club of Carshalton Park will pass the goods on to the Romanian Aid Foundation (RoAF) and local day centres for the elderly. Year 6 visited Henley Fort (near Guildford) recently as part of our topic work on A Child s War. It was clear to us that the two members of staff who run the day enjoy what they are doing and really engaged with us; as a result we had a really engaging day. On our trip, we experienced what it would have been like to be ARP

2 wardens and soldiers during the war. We got to handle the weaponry (guns) and were surprised at how heavy they were! GREATER LONDON WEST COUNTY REVIEW By Lynn Johnson (Year 6 TA but also Brown Owl) We were dressed in camouflage jumpsuits/boiler suits and berets and took part in training (ID, bayonets, grenade throwing etc). During the day we put out fires whilst acting in the role of the ARP wardens (bucket fillers, two hose holders, hose positioners and the water pumper). We had a thoroughly enjoyable day and learnt a lot from the experience. Many of our girls here at Barrow Hedges are involved in Guiding via Rainbows, Brownies or Guides. On Saturday 30 th September I was privileged to see two of our year 6 girls in action at the Greater London West County Review. (This is an afternoon where groups from all over the county show highlights of what they have been up to throughout the year.) Throughout the event there were presentations, singing, a dance and video messages. Emily (Chestnut class) and Jaimee (Sycamore class) had to wait until almost the very end before it was their turn, however they did not let their nerves get to them. They stood up in front of over 100 people and gave a polished performance with

3 a clear confidence that many grownups in the room envied. They told the assembled audience all about a huge sleepover (which many of the Barrow Hedges Brownies may well have attended in the summer, at Broadstone Warren) before challenging our County Commissioner to make a Tree Face out of clay, pine cones, conkers and leaves. The girls were a credit to themselves, to Guiding and of course Barrow Hedges. Well Done Jaimee and Emily for being great Ambassadors for Barrow Hedges! YEAR 4 ENTERPRISE MORNING By Naia Hymans & Adrian Walters (Walnut Class) On Thursday 12 th October Year 4 took part in a workshop during the morning sessions. The man running the workshop was called Tim Hall; he taught us about running a successful business and how to ensure you make a profit by managing your costs. During the session we had to collaborate with each other to solve a problem. This was based on a scenario of surviving on a desert island and trading items. The sorts of items we thought about trading were fish, drinking water, materials to make a fire etc. It was good to learn about what successful business men and women have to consider when setting up their companies. YEAR 6 ENTERPRISE AFTERNOON By Siyuan Lin and Emma Wang (Willow & Sycamore) The afternoon session with Year 6 was all about money! We talked about parents spending habits and what they might have to budget for in terms of outgoings. Firstly, we got in to our classes and played a game where we had to go through the alphabet naming banking terms and money related items. Afterwards, we were put in to smaller groups to play a game where we were given an imaginary 200 budget for our monthly entertainment. The game was similar to monopoly in terms of picking cards with chance events e.g. You can spend the money on a fashionable pair of school shoes for 50 or get unfashionable school shoes for 25. Which do you chose? Our group was very prudent with our spending however we still ended up with the least amount of money! SIGNALONG By Mikey Lowes (Deputy Headteacher) On Thursday 28th October, Mrs Davies, Billy (Y3) and Nathan (Y5)'s Mum, came into school to teach some Signalong to Elm Class. Mrs Davies taught the children to sign their name and favourite activity.

4 Signalong is an excellent tool for supporting children in developing their speech and language; it can be useful for all children. Elm Class really enjoyed Mrs Davies' visit; they are using their new skills when communicating with each other. A big thank you to Mrs Davies for coming in; we hope she will come in again soon and teach some more of our pupils! OUR LIBRARY By Glenda Banks (TA across the school) Mr Brooker to play individually to prospective parents for the 2018 intake to Reception (whilst they waited for Mrs Wood s talk to begin in the hall). A range of musical instruments were being played. They were: violins, trumpets, trombones, the bazooka, flutes and the piano. I really enjoyed being able to play to a different audience and to be part of a group showing off some of the talented musicians we have at Barrow Hedges. PTA COFFEE MORNING On Thursday 12 th October the PTA held a coffee morning in the hall. This was well attended (especially by our new Reception parents and carers). At the end of the coffee morning the PTA held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) and reported on the fundraising they had completed in the previous year. MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING The library is up and running. I will in due course be writing to you about how you can support the use of the library though donating a Birthday Book. This scheme has not been run in school for while so please watch out for the letter detailing the types of books we are asking for. We also recently held a staff coffee morning to raise money for the Macmillan charity. A special thank you goes to Sarah Wheel (Teaching Assistant) and the Year 2 team who co-ordinated this event. It was a fantastic morning and we raised close to 300 for a charity close to many staff members hearts. PROSPECTIVE PARENT TOURS & OUR MUSICIANS By Mili White (Y6 Sycamore) Recently, a group of instrumentalists (from Year 3 upwards) were chosen by

6 The Sporting Hedge Sports Editor: Ms Kelly Wallis FOOTBALL (Mr Buckingham and Mr Pearce) The season is well underway for the boys with both the A and B teams playing their first game of the year. The A team played a borough cup fixture against St Elpheges. Despite a very promising first half and excellent effort shown on their first competitive game of the season, they did unfortunately lose the game in the second half but are looking forward to the beginning of the league season. The B team had a friendly match against a very strong Cheam Common side who were much stronger on the day. The boys thoroughly enjoyed their first game playing together and showed excellent commitment and team spirit. Training has also started every Friday with an initial focus on improving passing and movement off the ball. Mr Pearce and I have been very impressed with the determination and commitment of the boys in these early stages of the season. GIRLS FOOTBALL (Miss Duffin) What an amazing half term it has been for Girls Football! I am overwhelmed by the dedication of every team member and would like to thank the girls for bringing such energy and enthusiasm to all training sessions, meetings and matches. I would also like to thank parents for their continued support and assistance with providing lifts to and from fixtures, and for washing and returning kit promptly after each match. We kicked off our season with a friendly against Cheam Common back in September, which we won 3-1. A couple of weeks later the girls were back in action with our first league match against Westbourne. In the past, Westbourne have proved to be very tough opponents for us and at half time we were 2-0 down. Nevertheless, during our half time team-talk, the girls were able to identify their own weaknesses as a team and showed excellent collaborative communication in suggesting what we could do differently in the second half. This proved to be highly beneficial as we went on to win the game 4-2! Our second league fixture was against St Cecelia s on Tuesday 10 th October at Sutton United. The girls were absolutely buzzing for this game and keen to continue their winning streak. In our training session the day before, we watched Youtube videos of England Ladies matches and the girls were encouraged to identify areas of strength in the players who play in their positions. Overall, the team felt that the main difference between our match performance and England s match performance was that the England

7 players were always eager to get to the ball first before their opponents, rather than wait for the ball to get to them. It was great to see the girls applying this from the second we kicked off and within the first 5 minutes of the match, we were 2-0 up! The girls continued to pressure and press throughout the game and we ended up winning 8-0, with a double-hat trick from Emelia, and a goal each from Olivia and Zoe. Two days later we had a friendly against Dorchester, at Cheam Park. In this game, our more regular goal scorers were rested to give some of our other players a chance to find the net. The strength of our overall squad was emphasised in this game, as we still finished with a 7-0 win! Goals this time came from Amelie, Leila, Georgie (2) and a hat trick from Cristina. As it stands, we are currently top of the Sutton Girls U11 league! Please for updates on fixtures and results. NETBALL (Mrs Trafford) Netball training is underway and as a new coach to Barrow Hedges, it has been lovely to see the enthusiasm and energy of all the players. Whilst some of the players have a little netball experience, most are new to the game and it's great to see them all improving every week. We are really enjoying using the new Netball court at Barrow Hedges this year and look forward to putting it to good use, when competitive matches start after the half term break. Our first league match will be at Amy Johnson Primary School on Tuesday 31 October. A local netball club are also looking for new players see below: PE LEADERSHIP TRAINING On 29 th September 2017 Barrow Hedges PE Leaders (HIPPOS) attended a training course at Cheam Common Junior School. The purpose of the course was to give the children playground ideas and develop leadership. The children got to know other pupils from neighbouring schools and, once confident, were able to practice their leadership skills on some Y3 children. We look forward to the HIPPOs starting their new rota after half term and trying out all their new games on the playground at lunchtime.
