1 CEO Talk Members & Patrons, I wanted to start off with thanking those who entered the Melbourne Cup Sweep and attended on the day. This was a huge success, with many happy punters. Winners for the Cup Sweeps are on page 2. Another great success was our Dinner & Show. Those who attended had a good time and enjoyed the food & entertainment. We will be hosting another event next year, so look out for more information in the next few months. A huge congratulations must go to the Sports Club and in particular Ian MacKenzie. The Club has won the Community Partnership Award from Scope for helping to organize the football & cricket teams for people with a disability. Also for providing and presenting medals & trophies to the kids at the grand final. We are honored to accept this award and appreciate the recognition. It was great to watch the Aussies win the first test in The Ashes series on the big screen. Check out this month s calendar for dates that the next games will be shown on the big screen again LIVE. The Football Club held their AGM on Tuesday 26th November Please check the football club page for details of the nominated positions. Congratulations to Dave Dennison for being voted Life Member of the Football Club. The Clubs AGM was unfortunately postponed due to the Audit Report not being finalized. A new date will be forthcoming very soon, and members will be notified. Unfortunately the Melbourne Storm had to cancel the 20/20 cricket friendly we were organizing. This was due to players personal commitments, however please look out for a Celebrity Cricket Bash to be organised for Sunday 2nd February. It should be a cracker! The St Albans Gift will be run on Saturday 18th January. We hope it is a fine day and we get lots of support & volunteers from the club. It should be a big day out for families and best of all it s FREE!. Check out the prizes on offer for Christmas Raffles which is drawn on Sunday 22nd December Also we have out very limited Johnnie Walker Promotion. This bottle is only available in Duty Free stores and will be drawn on Monday 23rd December I d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. John French Club News Coming in December the Sports Club will be opening the CLUB CAFÉ Serving delicious cakes, muffins, sandwiches, wraps and more. Grab yourself a coffee or hot chocolate & enjoy in the TAB or Gaming area! Open daily between Bistro menu still available CLUB VOUCHERS The Sports Club will be offering Food & Beverage vouchers for members and patrons to either purchase or use to redeem points on their membership card. 11 Football News SENIOR SUMMARY PRE SEASON TRAINING Senior Pre-season training has commenced as follows: MONDAY 6pm - THURSDAY 6pm - Brimbank Park (bottom carpark) The St. Albans Spurs have hit the ground running to start the pre-season, adding a whole new fitness and physio department as well as some exciting additions to the football staff. Former Melbourne footballer Russell Robertson has taken on a developmental role at the club, adding to new Reserves Barry Kennett, new Youth Girls coach Bree White and Seniors Assistant Coach Sean Potter to the coaching ranks. Matt Russell will take charge of the Senior team in A whole new list of players looks set to take the field in 2014, many of them young and coming from our partner, Victoria University. We re much further advanced than we were this time last season and are players with our coaching and fitness team acquisitions. While improving and taking steps for our future on-field, we are very happy in the steps we have taken off field. Former Melbourne director and current CEO of Guide Dogs Victoria Karen Hayes has taken over the club Presidency. We re extremely proud to have her on board, adding business nous and experience to a great club. We were also thankful to receive a $10,000 grant from the Bank of Melbourne s Local Project competition, as well as $5,000 from footy lover philanthropist Sue Alberti. This has helped make our September 2014 trip to the U.S.A a reality. We have currently raised over $6000 for our trip, and are very thankful to all who have donated. We ve been very happy with the output of all players who turned up for day 1 of pre-season, and look forward to that continuing over these next weeks before the Christmas break. Go Spurs! Junior Update Pre season training has started for the junior teams with the Summer Training Program. There has been a fantastic turnout so far each week with over 50 kids attending each week. If you are interested in joining in, we d love to see you there. 13 Golf News Hookers & St Andrews Beach MICHAEL PORTELLI GETS HIS ARSE KICKED BY DANNY WILD IN THE MATCHPLAY FINAL! Sunday 17 th November 2013 St Andrews Beach Round 10 Stableford A perfect spring morning on the Mornington Peninsula greeted us for our game at St Andrews Beach. It was a nervous day for some with Danny Wild vs Michael Portelli in the Matchplay final, as well as the business end for a few others in the race to be crowned Club Champion. Nicholas The Great Giasoumi had his eyes firmly fixed on avoiding the dreaded pink shirt and was thinking of nothing else. The build up to the Matchplay final was interesting with Portelli preferring to go down the trash talking route talking himself up on Facebook as if he already had the title safely in his keeping. Wild on the other hand went down the path of less said the better and went into hiding leading up to the final. Portelli for all the talk has remarkably never won a Matchplay title although has likely been runner up a number of times. Wild has never won anything in the Hookers and Slicers since joining some 20 years ago. For all the build up and anticipation the Match itself was crap. Portelli rolled over like a puppy looking for a belly rub and got his big hairy arse kicked from here to Tasmania. All hail Danny Wild the new Matchplay champion winner 6 and 4. Michael Portelli has not been seen since the weekend and from all reports has suspended his Facebook account. Poor form Michael, he who giveth should never take it away! Danny s winning ways continued as he also won the day with 36 points. Poor Johnny Rutar went from chocolates to boiled lollies just missing out on his maiden win last month to coming last this month. Wear that pink shirt with pride John and maybe a better preparation for your game next month is in order rather than getting smashed the night before at the Sports Club. Club championship is nearing the final round with Rod Brown holding on to a slender lead over the pesky Portelli who needs a better game than he produced Sunday if he is going to win. Great to see that Millo and the Champ Farrugia up there fighting for a spot in the top 3. So its off to Bacchus Marsh for the final round of the year on 15/12, lets all try to make the effort to get there and have a few quiet Christmas drinks before we take a break until the New Year. The Saints Angling Club is for members of the Sports Club who enjoy a bit of fishing. They meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month and usually have monthly fishing trips. All new members are welcome to join. The cost is $10 but you must already be a member of the Sports Club to register.
