Lions Market Saturday 12th September Memorial Hall A Grade LVFNL Premiers 2015 PYRAMID Hill won its first Loddon Valley Football Netball League A- grade netball premiership since 2007, with a thrilling win over Calivil United in the grand final last Saturday. The Bulldogs were pushed all the way by the defending champions, but s better efficiency in the goal ring proved to be the difference in the end. While the Demons whittled the margin away to two at the final whistle, it was the third quarter that proved to be match-defining. Calivil United came really hard at us in the second half, an elated Pyramid Hill coach Gemma Scott said. We were under a lot of pressure in that third quarter but the girls held on really well. The grand final win was s 16th-straight victory this season. The magnitude of the performance was even greater considering the training difficulties the team endured this year. We ve never had a training session where we ve all been at training together, Scott admitted. The team is spread out, so it s hard to get everyone together at once at training. It just shows how well we can come together as a team on the day and get the job done. Phone: Bowls 60 & OVER: The fellas got off to a slow but steady start to the 60+ season last week. That s okay, guys. We know your tactics are to lull the opposition into a false sense of security. You don t want to show all your cards on the first day out. Last year the team basically comprised of three A s (Allan F, Allan J and Andy) along with stalwart Ernie. For this week anyway we had a changing of the guard. We had a team of Stick Men and young Andy. We welcomed back Bruce who has had a considerable lay off but returned in great form. It s so good to have you back, Bruce. Alan J, Bruce and Ernie have all resorted to swinging the stick which is a skill in itself. Whatever it takes, lads! And so the chase for the dead chook is on again. This week we have the home ground advantage so we are looking forward to great things. Good luck! COACHING: A great session of coaching was enjoyed by seven of our ladies on Wednesday. A huge thanks to Tony Cantwell for his time and patience. It was a session of great benefit to both the new bowlers and those who have been bowling for a while. Just altering one or two small things can make an amazing difference. Tony will return on Tues, 29 th Sept.1:00pm for a follow up session. If you missed this week, don t stress, you are still welcome to come along on the 29 th. PRACTICE: There was good roll up of men at practice this week. The ladies were noticeable in their absence. Accolades for the three committed ladies who fronted up for the evening practice following on from the two hours of solid rolling in the afternoon. The sausage sizzle was well received. We welcomed new bowler, Barry, and hope that he finds the PHBC a good place to be. DISTRICT PAIRS: Last Monday our Club hosted the NDBD 60 + Pairs competition. Thanks to the green keepers, Dave, Allan & Brian for preparing the greens. They ran beautifully. Also, thanks to Lionel for cleaning the ditches, Graham for painting the lines, Nola and Marie S for help in the kitchen. Many players noticed our new ditch surfaces and comments regarding our Roll Royce rakes were also received. Well done to all concerned! Now we just have to do it all over again next Monday. A HINT OF HUMOUR: We all recognise that kids are streets ahead of us older folk when it comes to technology; ipads, phones, computers etc. As well, they are very proficient at creating their own meaningful texts. For example: BFF = Best Friends Forever, and LOL = Laugh Out Loud. Why not have a few codes for Seniors??!! FWIW = Forgot Where I Was. CBM = Covered By Medicare. GHA = Got Heartburn Again. Watch next week s Press for a few more ideas. 11 Netball Club A Grade Grand Final We started with the first centre and with some great play we very soon had us off to a good start. Calivil didn t take long to reply and began to chip away at us but we were able to hold onto a slight lead and be 2 goals up at the first break. 2 nd quarter Calivil upped the anti and applied defensive pressure all over the court. We were made to work extra hard for it and under the pressure it took us nearly 6 minutes to add to our score tally. Calivil had chipped their way back at us and had taken the lead. Once we got going we broke back the lead and edged away again to remain 2 up at half time. 3 rd quarter play went from end to end and it really became a battle of the goalies. Lucky for us Calivil s had lost their eye and missed a few, while we made the most of each opportunity and remained on target, only missing 1 for the quarter which gave us a 5 The Neighbourhood House would like to thank everyone who supported the launch of our Knitted Knockers Program and our daffodil day BBQ. We had a great day. Special thanks to the Victoria Hotel for donating a dinner for two and the Pyramid Bakery Café for selling daffodils on our behalf. Congratulations to Wanda Atkins for winning the raffle draw. All proceeds from the day will be donated to the Cancer Council. goal lead going into the last break. Changes were made by both teams and despite missing our first few opportunities we continued to hold and lead by 4 for most of the quarter. In a last ditch effort of the dying minutes of the game Calivil broke back and added 2 quick goals, but in our favour the timer was up and their run home was going to be too late. PHFNC Congratulates Coach Gemma Scott and her team on their victory in what was a well fought out battle from both teams until the final siren. Final Scores PHill 31 def Calivil 29 Best on Court Kirby Mann Other Mention Abbey Dingwall On behalf of the A graders a big thankyou must be said to both the Coffee Bank for their huge generosity in shouting all players a celebratory meal & to LaPiazza for their hospitality in hosting, and allowing the after party to continue. 12 Life Members Netball Club PHFNC proudly awarded life memberships to both Deb Forster and Kate Bartels at their Vote Count/Presentation Day on Sunday 30 th August. Kate and Deb have both been talented and valued players but also highly respected and hard working committee members of the PHNC for 20+ years. Deb Forster Deb is the longest playing member of our club after having played her entire netball career with PHNC. Deb s affiliation with the Netball Club began at the age of 10 in 1988, when she began playing in the juniors, and continued until she retired at the end of season She has been a team member of all grades, both juniors and seniors at various stages throughout her playing career. Sadly there is no record kept of matches played, but there is no doubt Deb s tally would be between the club games. Deb has achieved x 1 senior B&F, x 2 Senior R Up and x 2 Junior R Up club awards. She was a valued member of the 2006 A grade Premiership Team, and has been a member of many other Senior and Junior Finalist teams throughout her career. Deb has been both a Senior and Junior coach within the PHNC and is currently still the well respected Junior Mini s coach at present. Within PHFNC Deb currently holds the position of PHNC Treasurer and has for the last 7 consecutive years. She has also been PHNC Vice President twice, PHFC Ladies Committee Member twice, Assistant Secretary to LVNL and is currently Assistant Treasurer to the newly amalgamated PHFNC. Kate Bartels After getting married and moving to the town in 1991, Kate has been heavily involved in PHNC since. Kate has been a very talented Senior player of various Senior grades until retiring from injury during season Kate has achieved x 3 A grade B&F, x 1 B grade B&F club awards. In 2009 she was awarded the LVNL B grade Runner Up. Kate along with others, has never been fortunate enough to win a Premiership with PHNC but has been a valued member of both A & B grade Runner s Up Teams & also many Finalist Senior teams. Kate is the only member of PHNC that can claim fame to having played an entire season of senior netball with her daughter Georgia. Not only did Kate & Georgia play the season together in 2011, but in another amazing achievement they took out the club awards with Kate being equal B&F and Georgia being R Up. Kate has also been a well respected Senior and Junior Coach within PHNC many times over the years. Within PHFNC Kate has been PHNC President 5 times, PHNC Vice President 2 times, a PHNC LVNL delegate and has always been a PHNC Committee Member almost every year of her involvement. Kate was a key member of the PHFNC 125yrs Reunion Committee and has also been a PHFNC Ladies Committee member for the past 2 years. As with all clubs it takes all of us to chip in and do our bit so our clubs continue to function. But whilst some just simply take their turn others go above and beyond. As with all volunteers, these people never do it for any monetary benefit or personal accolades. They do it because they firstly have a passion for the sport, and then that passion becomes a commitment and loyalty to the club. People like Kate and Deb can never be thanked enough for their contributions to our club. On behalf of PHFNC we congratulate and THANK YOU both!
