This year College hosted the annual Remembrance Day service. College students along with St Patricks Primary and many members from the public assembled in the BER to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives fighting for our country. Principals from the local school network, who were at the College for a meeting, joined the students, as well as Pyramid s newly appointed Senior Constable, Brett Johnson, who laid a wreath. The Ceremony began with Mrs Lee reading a very heart warming story called 'The Red Poppy', by David Hill, with pictures from the book projected onto a screen for all to see. Every student, as well as some community members, placed poppies (that students made themselves) or wreaths. Three of our brave year 7/8 students took on the challenge to read aloud the poem 'In Flanders Fields'. We then stood in silence for one minute. Once the ceremony was over morning tea was served. Thank you for showing your participation in our community event and thank you to Mrs Bronwyn James for her thoughtful and meaningful presentation and to everyone who contributed in any way. Wait! How did I hear that? Oh yeah, it s a minute s silence. It was intense. It was so quiet. It was just so-o-o-o-o quiet! Keeley Forster The Red Poppy was a great story from my point of view. I thought the ceremony was very solemn and respectful. Bradley Moon 1

This year I had the friendship and a volunteer from one of this year s Duke of Edinburgh Award, Pyramid Hill students. I would like to share this with them and wish them all well in the future. Margaret Williamson Taken from a speech made at the Commonwealth Youth Sunday, 1964 in - I would like to say it still applies. So grow up being grateful to God and your fellows for what you have. Train yourselves for leadership within the community. Be a worker, not a shirker. Only then, in a very small way, will you be repaying the debt to society, which is yours. This community needs leaders, it needs citizens who have accepted responsibility and are willing to accept it and above all, it requires that those who take the lead in our social and national life, be people of character and common-sense. Given these qualities, we cannot help but make a worthwhile contribution to that great Commonwealth of which we are a part. Dauntless, Abnegation, Candor Erudite and Amity are the titles of four groups with different attributes, but with one vision: to work on behalf of the world so that good can prosper and thrive. Children of any group must, as they reach their teenage years, decide whether they remain in their parents party or change to another. The titles of those parties suggest the mode of life they are to follow, if they pass an aptitude test and achieve a pass in strict and alarming initiation tests. Girls, we well as boys, are put through tough and nerve shattering tests in three stages. The last trial involves being given an hallucinatory drug injection in the back of the neck. Nightmarish experiences follow which seem to last for hours, but not more than a few minutes, depending on how each candidate copes with them. Christina wanted to change from her parents group, the Abnegation, to Dauntless. She resented the frugal self-denying, almost Puritanical life she was leading, to look for more excitement and freedom. Though small and underdeveloped in stature, she was sharp minded and soon became secretly admired by one of the team leaders. In the dog-eat-dog atmosphere of competition with her peers, she often found the Dauntless attitude of win at all costs distasteful. There was in-fighting among all the factions, as well as secret deals among others who betrayed their own and made secret deals with other groups. Erik and Max made a deal with the Erudites to develop a serum which would program minds to do what they were told, virtually turning them into zombies. The aim was to defeat the Abnegations, the group Christina, now Tris was born into. Eventually, the source of the serum was discovered and the program destroyed, but not before much loss of life. This book ended with a few Dauntless survivors jumping onto a train and leaving the scene of desolation. We will find out more in the two following books. So.. What did we think of that? It was brutal, eerie, scary, over the top! Just a good story? We should look at the world perhaps a little differently. I was disturbed at the way girls were characterized, perhaps too farfetched, but is that the way we are heading? Divergent gave me nightmares, but I must admit it was a real page turner even on the second reading, I could not put it down. 9 More District History Part 36 By Ern Ferris More of the 2011 flood. The seasons changed from the nearly 20 years of drought to a continuous series of rains each few weeks when around 20 to 30 mils of rain became a regular feature. All looked bright for anything agricultural and naturally the Businesses also. For some time it looked as if a time of recovery was at hand but the climatic conditions just did not give way to a normal summer and the rains became heavier and more frequent. The rains continued and many towns became under the threat of severe flooding. The Lions club barbeque was stationed at the Memorial Hall which became a place of refuge. People who had taken refuge at Calivil were brought to as the flood moved northwards. A number of older folk were the evacuated to Echuca when the water burst through the banks that were holding it back at the east end of Ottrey Street burst. Quick action by the excavators soon bridged the gap and the water just escaped along Ottrey Street to McKay Street. The people remaining in the town were summoned by the fire siren to assemble in the railway yard and fill more sandbags when required. \the efforts of the men and women together with the excavators, shovels, sandbags and whatever was necessary to build levees that protected the town were the heroes of those desperate times. Riverine Herald January Navy Help Marooned Pigs. A Royal Australian Navy Sea Hawk helicopter had an unusual job delivering around 14 tonnes of feed to pigs, owned by the Griffiths family of Macorna. Unable to truck feed into the piggery because of the surrounding flood water, the unusual step was made to take to make sure the pigs had enough feed for the week. The Griffiths family have been overwhelmed by the support it received from the community who battled alongside it to help save the pigs and property. The breeder unit was saved by a levee bank and while water is inside it did not get into the piggery itself. A hastily constructed levee bank helped save the house, but that being one of the only dry spots, became a haven for insects and bugs. Rod did not realize there were such big spiders. Most of the pigs were trucked out and are being housed near Leitchville. They can never be brought back and because some were breeding stock, production losses will be felt for the next six to seven months. When they decided to move the pigs there were five trucks there within the hour. People were sandbagging the house and excavators working through the night to build levees. Leading Seaman Nick Lowe from 816 Navy Squadron in Nowra said it was the first time he had been involved in delivering feed to a piggery. They had just returned from Queensland where floods were the floods were totally different. The devastation was so graphic up there, whereas here the water is much more slow- moving. After The Floods in January 2011.To take a look around and the surrounding areas one can not but wonder, Was it a dream or was it real? Surely many people will have had that same feeling. Most people know that it was really true and something to that extent had never happened before, really did happen. One has only to note the grass, straw and other debris on the fence wires to the height of which the water rose and see clear evidence of where the water had risen to and how high it rose when it reached the sandbags that were keeping the water out from the town and properties. At the channel near the swimming pool after the flood had subsided it looked strange to see those sandbags on the channel bank nearby where they had stopped the water entering Victoria Street At the peak of the flood the water was almost 2 feet high where the crossing was sandbagged, and the water was well above the surface of the Swimming Pool. This same situation could be seen near the Pyramid Hill College at the Seven Months Creek crossing. In general it was the hastily constructed levee bank around the western side of the town that saved the town from being inundated. 12 Bowls Notes Some good stuff to sing about this week!! Firstly.. The 60+ lads played at Kerang where the greens are lightning fast. The lads, (3xAs + E = Allan, Alan, Andy & Ernie) were on fire and won their first game 10 zip. Had it been Pennant, there would have been a requirement for the losers to display their jocks on the flag-pole, but apparently that rule was not evoked last Thursday. The next game they played a draw and were required to play an extra end that unfortunately was lost by 1 shot. That must have knocked the stuffing out of the chook because they lost the last game by 3 shots. A very fine effort, lads! Mid-week Pennant : No match scheduled for this week, so we can dream that we had a win at least we weren t defeated. Saturday Pennant: Division 1 travelled to Leitchville and, like last week, very nearly won. Lionel, Marie S., Andy & Terry fought the good fight but did not claim the victory with the final score It seems the opposition team liked to have the jack surrounded. Fred, Glen, Laurie, & Helen F certainly did their bit to capture the flag with a win. Beau, Ian, Kate & Graham met with some tough opposition and lost And so the story continues; that the team was more than competitive but fell short on the card (65-73). I m sure it won t be long before the cards will fall our way. Division 3, on the other hand, were singing all the way home from Gunbower where they claimed an emphatic victory, thanks in particular to the rink played by Brian and his crew. Charlie, Glenys, Alan J & Peter toiled hard to record a win by 2 shots ( 21-19) something they seem to be making a habit of (the two shot win, that is). Brian, Ernie, Allan F & Bill had a day when everything they did and touched turned to gold. They played so well and scored so prolifically that they ran out of numbers on the score board. (Of course, it could have been a bit of one-up-manship given that the ladies & gents in midweek Pennant had achieved similar heights a few weeks earlier!) The winning tally was with the opposition scoring more than half their score on the last two ends. Oh, what a feeling!!! Jan, Marie N., Lorraine F & Andrew had a great match, managing to get ahead on the score board and gradually peg away to complete a comfortable 10 shot win (26-16) thanks to some magnificent bowling by Skip, Jan. Some of her up-shots had to be seen to be believed!!! The amalgamated scores showed a whitewash win with a total of and full points on the premiership ladder. Tournament Day: Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the successful tournament held last Sunday. Fourteen teams took to the greens and enjoyed the resulting effort put into the green preparation by the Green Keepers. The venue looked picturesque with the lawns trimmed and the roses blooming. Thanks to the two shifts of ladies who prepared and served the luncheon and afternoon tea. Thanks also to those who dropped tools to make up a team when one of the visiting teams failed to show up. Others to thank are the ones who manned (or lady-ed) the bar, those who donated raffle prizes, those who marked the greens, and those who did all manner of things to assist on or before the day (especially Lionel). Every little contribution was helpful and appreciated. Sponsors for the day were the Loddon Shire, Ellwaste and Lipps Fertilizers. Their generosity was gratefully received. The extra trappings provided by Lipps Fertilizers was a bonus and added a touch of class to the day. Winners of the day: Cohuna Golf Skippered by Alan Porter. Runner-up Calivil (Skip, Barry Meighan). Best last game Cohuna (Skip, Keith Foreman). Dates to mark on your calendar: Saturday Pennant Round 6, 15 th November Division 1 host Gunbower; Division 3 host Kerang White. Mid-week Pennant- Round 8, 19 th November Division 1 host Barham Sports; Division 2 host Cohuna Golf Sunday 7 th December: A/C Triples Tournament. For Sale: A reminder to all club members that grippo & chalk are available for purchase at the clubhouse. Singles Championships: Congratulations to players who have participated in the Club Singles Championship competitions. There had been some closely contested games to date. The ladies Championships have reached the final stage when Glenys and Marie S will go head to head. Good luck and good bowling to both players!
