Produced by College Kelly Street,, 3575 Tel: Fax: press@pyramidhillc.vic.edu.au Website: Bowls - Regional Winners Congratulations, Lionel and Marie! What a dynamic duo!! Last Sunday, having already beaten all opponents at District level, Lionel and Marie S., with a small but enthusiastic band of supporters, competed against other District winners of the Region in the State Mixed Pairs competition held at Swan Hill. In their first match they were drawn against Murray Valley District. Without any evidence of nerves they got off to a dream start scoring four shots on their first end and were eight shots up after just three ends. They both played with great form and steadily built their lead to finish 23-5 after the required eighteen ends. That was not just a win; that was an annihilation! Following the lunch break, they played the other winning team from the morning s play, Sunraysia. It was much more closely contested with some absolutely brilliant bowling from both teams. However, no one was more brilliant than Lionel. Working as a well-balanced combination, Marie in her leading role, always had bowls in the head or near vicinity to work on. But it was Lionel who even had the opposing supporters in awe with his precision draw bowling. Such finesse! It was truly something to behold! No opposition bowl was sacred. Lionel, with Marie also chipping in, could just gently nudge their bowls out of play. Time and again the supporters squealed with delight at the skill and accuracy. and then that little wry smile would briefly appear on Lionel s face, before he knuckled down to the next shot. It was brilliant, just brilliant!! They won the match with some fantastic bowling on the second last end when Marie managed to edge one of their own bowls between three opposition bowls to take the shot away from what would otherwise have been a three score deficit. Talk about precision! Even Lionel was left shaking his head at that one. The final score, 18-13, looks comfortable on paper but it was certainly a tense tussle basically determined by the last three ends where their adroitness shone out. Lionel and Marie are now down to the last sixteen competitors in the State and will play their next match in Bendigo in April. The Club is proud of what they have already achieved and wish them the same great form when next they play. With the venue much closer to home and most other commitments filled by then, we will be encouraging a greater army of supporters to come along and cheer them on. 1

Vale Dave Burke Our Club was saddened to learn of the passing of our friend, former President and great supporter, Dave. Dave was President of the Club on three separate occasions and certainly enjoyed his games and collegiality. Dave s interest in the Club continued long after he finished playing and, even when in the Rest Home, he would make the trek on his gopher to spectate the local matches. He enjoyed joining in the social nights and participated with enthusiasm. It was heartwarming to know that the Burke bowls were being brought out of the closet to be used for Barefoot Bowls. The Club extends sincere sympathy to the family of Dave and trust that your fond memories, combined with ours, help ease the pain of your loss. 8 Pyramid Bowls 60 and Over: The guys took the trip to Swan Hill to play the 60 and over matches last week. The team consisted of Ernie, Andy, Allan and the recruited Bill. Sincere condolences to Alan J who was absent due to a family bereavement. The team got off to a promising start winning their first two games 12-7 and 8-7. The second game was a nerve-racking event with the score tied at 7 a-piece going into the last end. The final game began well with a three shot end on the first and then neck-toneck scoring to be only one shot down going into the final end. Sadly, the chicken got wing clipped and three shots to the opposition meant they finished 4 short- that s two legs and two wings short of the full chook. A very big Thank You to the 60 and Over folk who agreed to the suggested move of their matches this week to Gunbower in order to allow the Club House to be available for the funeral of our esteemed life member, Dave, on Thursday. Consequently, Pyramid will host the 60 and Over tournament next week. Saturday Pennant: Yippee, WooHoo! Finally a win!! Not just one win: two wins!! That s certainly worth a happy dance. Last Saturday our Club hosted the Wakool Bowling Club whereby we enjoyed a great day of social engagement and bowls. Although we gave the Wakool folk a warm welcome and embraced them with some friendly banter, our hospitality ran out of flavour when it came to contesting the match. Division 1 were finally able to field teams close to full strength and set about their task of matching their vocal opponents in all manner. At times there seemed to be a competition between who could raise the most decibels such was the intensity and exuberance of the players. At lunch things looked a bit grim as Wakool had the upper hand with Pyramid down on two of the three rinks. However, the sandwich fillings were doctored with the right stuff this week and there was a good turn around after the refreshment break, particularly Beau and his team (Ian, Kate and Graham). Ian was on fire all day and Beau pulled off some great Skipper s shots to enable their team to turn the arrears into a credit (24-21). Great work! Lionel s rink worked hard to keep within touch and certainly had the most raucous opponents to contend with. Lionel, who did his best to match the vocal enthusiasm, led his team (Marie S., Jan and Andy) to a very fine tally. Although they didn t win their rink they stayed close enough to be covered by the other rinks. Concentration was the order of the day on the third rink where Pyramid led from the start and did not let their lead falter. Peter, playing Lead, gave his team plenty of optimism with his consistent placements. This good work allowed Marie N. and Laurie add to the head, while the Skip, Fred delivered an amazing display of touch bowling. You know you are in a good place when the opponents have to resort to up-shots and driving shots. Naturally, some of these worked but mostly the near misses acted in our favour. Three dead ends for the game meant we had to play a bit longer but the overall result was the reward for persistence and endeavour. The end score Overall, won Again, Yippee!! Division 3 playing on the front green were almost as boisterous in their play and with good reason. They also had a victory winning two of the three rinks. Glenys (Skip), Lorraine D., Rose and Gladys held their nerve to win by the barest of margins Allan, Bill, Barry and Ernie were close all day but fell away at the end to go down but their deficit was more than matched by the noisiest of all rinks Robyn (Skip), Jean, Lorraine F and Beth who won Jean was in great form yet again and still managed to produce some wonderful shots without being distracted by the mirth of those around her. Final score: Pyramid won What a day of celebration to have two wins on the one day! It hasn t happened very often and does little apart from enhance our own self-esteem, yet it is nice to bask in the glory of success just once in a while. Great stuff everyone!! Saturday Hotel: Last round of Pennant matches this week with both Divisions travelling to Barham Services. Following the day s play, players are encouraged to return to the Victoria Hotel for dinner by 7:00pm. Family and friends are welcome to join the gathering. Tournament: For the second time this season we have had to cancel a tournament due to the extreme heat. Although it is disappointing to have to make the cancellation, the Match Committee felt duty bound to put the well-being of players first before other considerations. Thanks to all who had already done the hard work of preparing the food and the greens in readiness for the Day. Particular thanks to Catering Committee organiser, Kate, and her back up support of members and husband, Tournament Secretary, Jan, and green keepers Andy and Alan who put in so much time and effort. Working Bee: Due to the changed arrangements for 60 and Over matches, the working bee and the lasering of the front green has been pushed back a week. The Working Bee will now be held on Saturday morning 5 th March commencing at 8:00am. Please make an effort to contribute some time. Barefoot Bowls: Once again the music played as the bare-foot bowlers, and those wearing shoes, enjoyed the competition of modified Jack Attack. One highlight of the night was Keeley doing cartwheels as she followed her bowl down the green. Oh, that we could all do that!! A cart-wheel or two would have really shown Wakool what we could do last Saturday! Another highlight was the last bowl pearler delivered by Ally to help her team to victory. Ally received her very first ever bowls trophy that night. The boxes of little Easter treats were just a small step up from the non-functioning pens from the previous week. May your emerging form enable you to enjoy many more victories on the bowling green, Ally. Winners on the night were George and his team but they were declared ineligible due to having won on the previous week. That meant Max Farrar (yet-to-signthe-membership-form Max) and his team were winners. The Shearer s team ( Moon, Moon and Mann) was Runner-Up and the Mixed Netball, with barely a netballer in sight (with the exception of one old has-been) was also Runner-Up. Ally was part of, and the only eligible part of, that team to collect the coveted trophy. This next week will see the culmination of the competition and the prizes will be well worth the effort.
