Eight Pyramid Hill College students, together with Fiona Moon, Dirk Gunther, Don Stewart and Cr Cheryl McKinnon, and ten students from Boort travelled to New Zealand s north island. From student reports, one of the highlights was visiting a deer farm, which was a completely new experience and they all learned a lot. Other places of interest were a sheep station, robotic dairy and beef cattle farms. Apart from farms, the group visited the local agricultural school, Gallaghers electric fencing factory and an Innovations Centre. Students were impressed with how green and pretty the scenery was and the hot springs of Rotorua (apart from the sulphur smell). A gondola ride up and the luge down, were highlights. Exploring the city of Auckland was interesting with the Maori culture very prominent. Like us on facebook at - Gwen Hampson s 90th Birthday Celebration A wonderful celebration party for Gwen s 90th birthday was held on Sunday at the Victoria Hotel. It was fantastic to see so many friends and family come through the doors to join us. Some for lunch, some after church, some before church, and some travelled a long way. Two grandsons doing an awesome job, Justin from Canberra, with his two daughters; Christian and his wife Stacey and three children from Red Cliffs. Granddaughters Belinda and family in Townsville and Sharyne in Brisbane were unable to attend, although both would have loved to be there, and sent Grandma their best wishes, so they were there in spirit. Overall a good number of her family were represented, the oldest being a sister-in-law to Gwen, who also recently turned 90. The youngest was Cooper Dingwall (nearly 3) who couldn t resist hopping up on a vacant footrest on Grandma s wheelchair when the candles were lit, then helping other great grandies to blow them out. The photo displays were interesting to all, as it seems she was quite a stunner in her former years. So when she hit Durham Ox as a young teacher in the 1940 s it must have caused quite a stir. In those days schools had only one teacher for all classes, and they boarded with local families, thus they became quite close to the students. Gwen was blessed to have six former Durham Ox students at her 80th birthday, and four out of the six came this time. Trish Whytcross was an apology, as distance was too great, and illness prevented Gwen Miller from attending. We were feeling for Gwen and Ernie, as we know how dearly they wanted to be there. Hope you are both back to better health soon. We thank everyone who made this day so special for our family for all who attended and your good wishes. Dave and Debbie and staff did a fantastic job catering and waiting on us as well thank you. It was a great celebration for our dear Mum. It has been an eventful year for the Hampson family we have two Mrs Hampsons turning 60, one Mrs Hampson turning 50 and a Mr Hampson turning 60 all being noughty. 9 More District History Part 34 By Ern Ferris Out on the western side of Pyramid Hill there was also much flooding of roads and the Loddon River overflowed towards Durham Ox and on to the Kerang area. It was after this flood that many young Red Gum trees appeared where the water flowed out over the river flats. Those trees are evident today on the left-hand side when approaching the Loddon Bridge on the way to Boort first made their appearance and now they are a grown forest. It was not only that these young trees germinated. The same thing that happened in most places and out in the Sylvaterre are those Pine and others we see now as beautiful avenues along these roads, germinated at the same times. The fact that many trees survived was also made possible when mobs of stock (especially sheep) that had been travelling these roads in search of feed, would graze off anything that was vegetation, were banned by law from travelling the roads. Dry Year There was very little harvest this year and it was this year that a dense dust storm rolled into Melbourne and gave the city people a sample of what dust storms were like. This was very much a shock to city folk who up till then had only heard of these storms from what the media chose to put forward. Hail Storm December It was in late December this year that the worst hail storm known in the district developed and the hail stones large a golf balls pounded the district. Grain crops being harvested were flattened as were all vegetation and gardens. Motor vehicles travelling or not under cover, were pounded mercilessly and left with enormous dints where hit by the stones and the same thing happened to galvanized iron roofs and tanks. Many paddocks whether they were crop or grass were made a tangled mass of minced vegetation as were vegetable and flower gardens. Floods, January Loddon Times January 26 th.flooding has left a trail of destruction across the Shire of Loddon. District communities are now in recovery mode after a mass of flood water swept through the district over the past two weeks leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Most towns were either inundated or isolated and huge swathes of the landscape were entirely submerged for days on end after the deluge of rain lasting almost a week dumped millions of litre of water over Victoria. Rural properties in the path of the floods have been devastated with millions of dollars of crops totally destroyed and thousands of sheep and other livestock dead. The true cost of the flood is still being tallied and many parts of the district are still covered in standing water that could take weeks to dissipate. The initial flash flooding swamped many areas, destroying or down grading crops and leaving thousands of animals stranded, but the worst was yet to come. Rain water dumped into the river and catchments upstream gathered speed and volume as it surged through the district. At the height of the flood the Laanacoorie Reservoir was spilling an incredible 194,000 megalitres a day into the Loddon River, which was soon surging through the two nearest towns downstream, Newbridge and Bridgewater.. The reservoir outflow has now dropped below the minor flood level of 2,000megalitres per day. The peak recorded on January is the highest flow on record since 1909, and more than 100 times the volume of normal outflows from the reservoir. Pyramid Hill residents managed to save their town with tireless sandbagging and levee building effort and Pyramid Hill Progress Association Secretary, Sue Lacey said that a huge team of past and present residents used six excavators and countless sandbags to seal the town from the raging floodwaters from both the Bullock Creek and the Loddon River. The levee burst in a few places and workers had to race off to fill the breaks with sandbags to stem the new flows as they developed. The general consensus in the town is that the effort of the excavators and their back up on the ground saved the town and all were well supported by a large team of ladies and men providing meals and filling sandbags twenty-four hours each day. 12 Bowls Notes A week of mixed fortunes. I hope we have better luck picking a winner on the Melbourne Cup! 60+ lads Fred, Andy, Alan Jobling & Ernie travelled to Barham Sports and won 2 of their three games. It sounds like that darned chook got away again. If it s any consolation, fellas, I have a stray one that keeps getting in my garden.you can have it, if you can catch it! Mid-week Pennant : The End-of-the- Week Pennant match played at Kerang on Friday was a big highlight for Division 1, but not such a highlight for Division 2 unfortunately. A great 10 shot win by Jan Leed s crew was enough to get the other two rinks over the line with an overall win by 3 shots. Marie S and Kate led their teams well and they only went down by narrow margins (5 and 2 shots respectively). Great work, Division 1! This was a gigantic achievement against a very strong Kerang outfit. In Division 2 the scores were not as flattering and only the rink led by Jeanette Naylor was victorious. Never mind winning one rink is better than not winning any rinks. That joy came to fruition on Wednesday! This week, Division 1 travelled to Cohuna while Division 2 hosted Barham Services. It was a day of sorrow but many of the scores were not disastrous. Division 1 results: Kate, Marie N., Brian & Bev were flying until the lunch break. Then the wheels fell off; well, they fell off and were shredded. After a shot lead at lunch, only one end was won following the break and the losing margin was a pitiful 3 shots (30 33). We deserved to be paddled; but suffice to say we were trying!! Marie S., Nola, Andy & Helen F had the best come back but still finished 9 shots short of a win. (25-34). Jan, Glenys, Marg L H., & Graham had a really tough day and came away in deficit. Overall score: Congratulations to Cohuna: they were too strong & too good on the day! Division 2 results: Joan, Robyn, John, & Dawn had a tough encounter also and lost (17-32). Jeanette, Jean, Lily & Wayne almost finished first going down by just 4 shots (23-27) Lorraine, Gladys, Alan J, Bill were even closer and after being even on 24 all at 24 ends, the penny fell down the wrong way and they lost by 1 shot. Overall score: Sadly, no points on the ladder anywhere! Saturday Pennant: The bubble of last week burst this week in the heat. As well as the heat, we can find excuses in the fact that we had 7 key players unavailable for selection. Thankfully, several extra ladies put up their hands to help out. Division 1 went to Barham Services Beau, Ian, Kate & Graham continued their good form and registered a win by 5 shots. Marie S., Jan, Andy & Terry had a nail -biting game and only went down by a small margin (4 shots) at the end of the day. Fred, Laurie, Jeanette & Helen F had a good battle all day. Despite their best efforts and some great bowling all round, they were not able to record a win this time. (-13) Still, it was a great effort considering the odds. I bet the opposition were panicking! Division 3 travelled to Kerang and found the going tough. However, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. It was our first real opportunity this season to complain about the heat. Charlie, John, Alan J & Peter worked hard to record a win by 3 shots with a great bowl by Charlie on the last end building on his team s bowls in the head. Brian, Ernie, Helen & Bill had a tense game and managed to finish first over the line. This gave The Hill a win on two of the three rinks. Sadly, the ladies were out-played by some stronger men who could not be put off by some gentle jibing. Marie N., Lorraine D, Lorraine F and Jean had a very trying day they were trying but the deficit of 22 shots (we ll just say that quietly) brought the rest of the team undone. Let s just put it down to experience not necessarily an experience to be repeated! Dates to mark on your calendar: Saturday Pennant Round 4, 1 st November Division 1 host Cohuna Golf 2 while Division 3 host Barham Services Blue. Here s hoping for Saturday Pennant Round 4, 1 st November Division 1 host Cohuna Golf 2 while Division 3 host Barham Services Blue. Here s hoping for some better results. Barham Bus trip 31st October That s this Friday. Have a good night everyone! Oaks Day Please note the change from Melbourne Cup to Oaks Day this year. Oaks Day is on Thursday 6 th November and we will make a 1:00 start, serving High Tea at around 3:00pm This is an open invitation everyone welcome. 13 PHC developed a sister school relationship with schools in Tanah Grogot, Paser District, East Kalimantan (Indonesia) about three years ago. This saw us host four Indonesian students in 2012 and then in 2013 Pyramid Hill College together with Wedderburn College returned the visit, staying in Tanah Grogot for two weeks. Last term we met two staff and 12 students from Tanah Grogot at the airport. Pyramid Hill College & the community welcomed five students and one teacher, whilst the remaining staff and students spent their time in Wedderburn. A number of activities were organised, including visits to: Shearing shed - John & Alison Farrar Buffalo Farm - Jack & Alice Blow Salute Olives - Peter & Marlies Eicher Spanner Man - John Piccoli Rotary Dairy - Shelley & Kelvin Matthews Pyramid Hill climb/explore - Glen Bartels Kyabram Fauna Park Echuca Paddlesteamers Thank you to these families and businesses for welcoming us into your workplace & business, it was very much appreciated and provided both our exchange students and local students with some new experiences! 13
14 This list of activities is in addition to experiences undertaken with individual host families. Pyramid Hill College sincerely thank the following families for their hospitality over the three week period, without them the exchange program would not be able to run; Meg & Don Stewart (Emily) - hosting Khusnul & Vinkan Nev & Michelle Miller (Hugh) - hosting Ahlul Roderick & Margarita Balla (Rica) - hosting Stephanie Mark Lacey (Jasmine) - hosting Rika Dawn Hercott/Paul & Sharon Hercott (Daniel) - hosting Luthfi We look forward to continuing to develop the relationship between our schools in order to allow these exchange experiences to continue. 14
