Students art work from the Kool Arts visit to Melbourne and the Loddon Shire Healthy Minds competition was displayed. Junior students presented a dance performance and then it was all out fun as the activities kicked off. There was entertainment for all ages as many community members had their own stalls as well as the various student activities with all the usual goodies - fairy floss, snow cones, popcorn with a very professional coffee shop for older folk. A beautiful roast meal was served in the evening. The 2014 Kool Skools Launch had everyone rockin in the stadium as students from Pyramid and the other schools who were involved in Kool Skools performed their items from the CD, which is available for purchase at the college if anyone would like one. To top off the event, two movies - Despicable Me 2 for the young ones and The Sapphires for others were shown. The College would like to thank the community stall holders and everyone who attended for helping make the event such a success. Special thanks to Kim Lister/Kellie Stewart who organized the meal, along with many parents/staff helpers who assisted with a variety of tasks. Thank you to our students who have produced such great work for showcasing and for your enthusiasm and assistance on the day. We are very proud of you. 2 Monday Night Netball Welcome back to Sherri, the new bride and congratulations. We also wish Brad a speedy recovery from his ankle injury. The Pink team made a great spurt towards the finish line at the 7 o'clock game, although not enough to win the game. The Red team had the game sewn up on the court. The same could not be said for the ball. The point of difference between football and netball is that the foot is not used in the later game. The emergency ball came out to complete the game with Red defeating Pink Kristen may be handy on the court but after Monday night s effort she will no longer be in charge of the timer. The 8 o'clock game saw Katrina take on the umpiring role, and on some occasions allowing the power to get to her. Some great defending by the Blues along with Pete's skill in the goaling circle. A 'lift' in the final quarter was to no ones advantage. Final score: Blue 42 def Purple 18 (we are presuming as scores were not taken in the first quarter). 9 Water Storages on the Creeks (By Ern Ferris) From the beginning of settlement in any part of Australia there always was the urgent consideration given to the stock and domestic water supply because no venture can thrive without water No doubt there were more than I know of but I will note some of these storages which were devised by the people who lived in close proximity to the streams where water would at least flow when the rainfall was sufficient to create a run of water. On the Picaninny Creek there were there were dams constructed by the creating a bank of earth across the bed of the creek from a high water level on each bank. Some of these banks were constructed including a spill way where water could be allowed to flow on downstream when the water level was high enough. As can be imagined there was much controversy at times when the settlers downstream considered they were being deprived of their share of water. There were times when a bank was mysteriously breached so that the water could flow on downstream. On this creek there was one dam known as Harris Dam at the site of the Harris farm and it remained intact for many years. This dam enabled there to be an Orchard and vegetable garden as well as stock water for many years. Water was pumped from the dam using a steam engine for power and stored in tanks and troughs for the stock rather than let them drink from the dam itself. To the South of that dam and in the vicinity of the Terrick Terrick Station homestead there was another bank that became known as the Sheep-wash, due to the fact that in those days the sheep were washed before they were shorn. This dam created a very suitable place for the building of the actual pondage where the sheep could be washed to clean the dirt and dust from the wool before the sheep were shorn. At a time when the creek was in flood, the water spilling over the top of the bank created a crater-like pool where a holding yard and granite floored draining pen was built so that the sheep could drain off the water from their wool after the bath. The sheep would be penned and moved along the granite block lined yard to where they were forced over the side and into the water bath from which they emerged free of much of the dirt and dust. That dam was close by the Terrick Terrick Station Homestead, part of which still survives today. In more recent years there was a dam created north of the Jungaburra Homestead during the years when the Picanniny Creek was not flooding as often as in the past. That dam held water back to supply the homestead with stock and domestic water and was quite successful. However as always with these dams, what is a benefit to some was a creation of a problem to land owners down stream and created tensions. I recall that the Jungaburra dam was breached by a mysterious explosion one night much to the delight of the downstream landholders There would have been other dams on this creek. Further to the west there were dams built across the Bullock Creek and the major one of these would have been the lake created at the West of the Cemetery. This dam was constructed by the building of a wide bank across the creek bed and a weir complete with three or four gates with drop bars for control of the water flow as required. That weir with its foot-bridge was often used as the means of crossing from the old township above the Cemetery to the township that was built around the railway line. It is a pity that this natural lake and weir was eventually destroyed because of flood waters during the 1990 s. Further North along the Bullock Creek there were two other dams that I know of and they were the Sydney Watson s Dam and the Camden Dam. The former being so named because of Sydney Watson who was a property owner at that location, The Camden Dam was so named because of the mob of Camden merinos imported by the owners of Mt. Hope Station nearby had chosen to camp on the bank across the Bullock Creek at the location of the dam. There would have been other dams of varying size built along these creeks. However I do not have that information. We were fortunate in that many of the roles were not vacated due to the willingness of those to continue in that role. This will not be the case in the very near future as some of these positions will be vacated in the next season. Parents are urged to consider taking on one of these roles in the future for fear of a similar circumstance to that of our Basketball Competition. All Committee members are most willing to discuss their current roles and what each entails. Those who did gather elected the new President for the coming season: Deb Dingwall. The Committee on behalf of the Netball Club, players and supporters welcome Deb and look forward to a successful and enjoyable season, particularly as the work on the new courts has commenced. A warm welcome also to Gemma Scott who has taken on the role of Match Secretary, which includes the role of submitting final scores to the LVFNL. Thank you and welcome Gem. Our outgoing President, Kate Bartels is to be congratulated on her success in the position which was held for four years. Kate has been at the forefront of a number of changes including new uniforms and courts. Her knowledge of the game and the sport and all that this involves has been an asset to the Club, players and supporters. Kate will continue to play an important role in the Club as she remains on the Committee for the 2014 season. Thank you Kate. Kerang Greens started really well against Mincha West in both the men s and women s sets and ended up going into the mixed with a handy 45 game lead. Mincha West was without a few men and although they put together some handy mixed combinations they couldn t close the gap. Greens ended up winning by 72 games. Greens juniors won against Mincha West on forfeit. Sylvaterre dominated against Kerang and although the games were a bit one-sided, it was still played in good spirit by both sides. Gemma Scott played confidently in her second game of tennis of her life, easily transferring her outstanding skills of agility and speed from the netball court to the tennis court. Foundation members, Vaughan and Neville never fail to impress, discussing strategies at every critical moment and running down balls with determination their younger opponents could only dream about. The controversial pairing of Liam and his mother, passed without incident as they won comfortably and the remaining mixed pairs did the same. Sylvaterre s recent success has been credited to their unofficial team coach, Darkie Ritchie, who was once again on hand to give timely and much needed advice. Left on Community Bus A while ago CD Case with CDS Please call Millers Ag If they are yours A bit further up the highway Yarrawalla played against Lake Charm. The day was a long one as 8 tie breakers were played. Well done to Barry Lingenberg, Justin Moon, Michelle Schmidt and Kim Lister who won all their sets. Unfortunately, Pam retired sick and we all hope she is feeling better. The Yarrawalla men won by 2 games, the women won by 11 games and Lake Charm won the mixed by 4 games. At the end of the day Yarrawalla was too strong for Lake Charm winning by 9 games. The results were reversed in the junior competition with Lake Charm juniors being too strong against a young Yarrawalla team, winning by 38 games. Out at beautiful Lake Meran the home team ladies were very pleased with their efforts as they defeated Calivil Nth for the first time, winning 32 games to 24. Meran s bottom ladies of Katrina, Tanya and Tia were very pleased to win all their sets. Karina and Vikki also had a great win 7-0 against Paula and Bec. It was another story for Meran s men as they lost all of their sets. In the mixed Carl and Karina and Tim and Tia were winners but overall Calivil North had a great day of competition with Michelle, Lloyd and Keiran winning their three sets. A great social day was had by all. Calivil North 101 defeated Lake Meran 73. This Saturday, Sylvaterre hosts Greens, Mincha West hosts Lake Charm, Yarrawalla hosts Lake Meran and Calivil North hosts Kerang. 12 Bowling Club A busy week this week both on and off the green! Plenty of matches played and, fortunately, most with success as the end result. 60 & Over: The men (Les, Alan, Andy & Allan) had mixed fortunes winning one of their three matches. No offence to Les, but being the odd name out (L not A) must have upset the balance of the team! Saturday Pennant: A win for both teams! Well done guys and gals! Division 2 travelled to Cohuna Golf where they found the greens quite challenging. It was an incredibly tight competition all day but the points for a win finally fell our way thanks to the performance of Lionel and his team. Welcome back, Marie. Final score was Pyramid 69 to Cohuna Golf White 67. Ian, Brian, Marie N & Bev worked hard to make up for a slow start, edged in front, then gave away a clumsy 6 shots in the late stages to finish with the narrowest deficit Beau, Glen, Helen & Nola were on a knife edge with little between the two teams and finished down Lionel, Marie S., Andy & Terry all bowled strongly and won by 5 shots which was enough to carry the whole side across the line. Marie s faith in herself was thankfully restored. Division 3 had an easier match against Barham Services winning two of their three rinks with an overall score Ernie, with the Midas touch turning everything to gold, won the accolades of all and sundry again. What a Star!! Ernie, Julie, Gladys & Bill won Les, Alan, Peter & Graham won Charlie, Kate, Andrew & John nearly won edging closer to a win lost Mid-Week Pennant: Last Friday s match against Kerang was quite disastrous for Division 1 who were totally out-played by very strong opponents. Although our teams did not play poorly, the opposition pulled off some amazing shots. Final score was 49 95, so I think we will just leave it at that!! Division 2 were unlucky not to play a match again as they received a forfeit from Barham Sports. That s certainly one way to amass premiership points, but not a very satisfying way three forfeits so far this season! This week Division 1 hosted Cohuna Golf and Division 2 hosted Cohuna. It was lovely to see so many people out on the greens in the beautiful sunshine. Division 1 were beaten by Cohuna Golf, but managed to win one rink to avoid a whitewash. Perhaps a week s rest will help us take stock and round up some form. There was certainly no dash down the home straight today! In fact, the winning rink almost got pipped at the post but, like Fiorente in the Melbourne Cup, kept their lead to forge a determined victory. Overall score: Back to the training track! Jan (Skip), Helen, Graham & Bev floundered around the course and couldn t get a straight run to the finishing line going down More oats needed amongst the chaff! Kate (Skip), Julie, Andy & Allan improved somewhat after the feed and watering half way through the match but were still in deficit Nola, Marie N, John & Neil showed grit and determination to see the distance with a win 21 20! Yee-ha! Thankfully, Neil & John were on song to put pressure on the rest of the field. Division 2 lost to Cohuna Lorraine (Skip), Gladys, Jean & Murray lost Joan (Skip), Marg G, John Cat. & Dawn came a close Red Cardeaux second Marg L H. (Skip), Robyn, Bill, & Lily the birthday girl made a great recovery on the last end to stumble over the line for a win Yee-ha, again! Bowlers please note: There is no Midweek Pennant competition next week. Melbourne Cup Day: What a great day of fellowship and fun, and magnificent food! It was so good to relax and enjoy each other s company! A mix of activities, jokes and sweeps made the afternoon pass very quickly. Thanks to our dear ladies of the town (Glad, Elva, Harriet, Brigett, Lorraine, Mavis, & Jeanette) who came along to share the day with us. We enjoyed your company and appreciated your involvement in the day s activities. Eat your heart out Gai Waterhouse!!
