5 Love the Game this September AFL Victoria is pleased to announce the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation as naming rights partner for the 2017 Peter Jackson VFL Love the Game Finals Series. The Foundation s Love the Game campaign encourages football fans, officials and players to think about why they love the game and to appreciate the skills and performances of teams that play in the competition without engaging in gambling. The finals series partnership will continue to remind supporters to enjoy the football on the field win or lose during the most exciting part of the season. The VFL Love the Game Finals Series will aim to take the emphasis off betting and on to raising awareness about how gambling has changed the way people experience sport. AFL Victoria understands the importance of reducing harm from gambling and we encourage all clubs and fans to focus on their love of the game, not the odds, during the finals. The ongoing support of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation is helping clubs to create safe and healthy environments for members, as well as teaching them about the risks of normalising gambling in the community. People need to be aware of their limits with gambling and the impact it can have on young people, particularly in a sporting club environment. The 2017 VFL Love the Game Finals Series shapes up as one of the closest in recent years, with the top eight teams only being decided in the final round last week. The VFL finals begin this weekend and will conclude with a triple-header of state-league Grand Finals at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 24, with the VFL Women s, VFL and TAC Cup deciders all featuring. The VFL Women s season also came to a close last weekend, with the finals to begin on Sunday September 10 at Piranha Park, Coburg. The VFL Women s teams will have this weekend off for the NAB AFL State of Origin game at Etihad Stadium, with 24 VFL Women s players selected to play in the all-star match. Best of luck to all clubs involved in finals over the next month. 10 Peter Jackson VFL Love the Game Finals Series Week 1 Preview By Jake Morris James Munro (Casey Demons) 1st ELIMINATION FINAL RICHMOND (5th) vs COLLINGWOOD (8th) Saturday September 2, Fortburn Stadium For the first time since becoming an AFL standalone club in 2014, Richmond will feature in the VFL finals, while the Magpies have registered their fifth consecutive finals appearance. Leading the competition in scoring with an average of 106 points per game, the Tigers boast one of the VFL s most powerful and even forward lines. With Ben Lennon and Sam Lloyd leading the charge, Richmond will be looking to outscore Collingwood, which averages 83 points per game. Despite the difference in scoring power, Collingwood s shock two-point win against Richmond at Punt Road Oval in Round 14 will give the Magpies added confidence heading into this encounter. Trailing by 16 points at three-quarter time, they dominated the final term with 12 scoring shots to four to inflict the Tigers sixth loss of the year. After making his AFL debut last week, Collingwood forward Kayle Kirby will return to the VFL side and look to make an impact on the scoreboard, with a semi-final berth against either Williamstown or the Casey Demons on the line for these two proud clubs. Gus Borthwick (Collingwood) 1st QUALIFYING FINAL WILLIAMSTOWN (1st) vs CASEY DEMONS (2nd) Saturday September 2, Burbank Oval Williamstown opens its finals campaign at home against a Casey Demons side that could make this a danger match for the minor premier. If their clash in Round 17 is anything to go by, this will be a defensive slog, featuring the league-leading Gulls defence (allowing only 63 points per game) and Casey s competition-best tackling pressure (87 tackles per game). Despite Williamstown s (83) to 8.12 (60) defeat of the Demons at Burbank Oval in Round 1, it will be the Round 17 clash at Casey Fields that will stick out in the minds of all 44 players on the field, with Casey taking down the ladder-leaders (78) to 7.12 (54) on the back of fierce tackling pressure. This will be second time in as many years that these teams have squared off in September, with the 2016 preliminary final still fresh in the minds of many players on both sides, when Casey ran out convincing 42-point winners at Fortburn Stadium. Look for a tight, tough and contested type of game, with the winner booking themselves a ticket to a preliminary final. 6

11 2nd QUALIFYING FINAL Shannen Lange (Port Melbourne) BOX HILL HAWKS (2nd) vs PORT MELBOURNE (3rd) Sunday September 3, Box Hill City Oval For the first time since 2009, the Box Hill Hawks enter September action while their AFL affiliate Hawthorn begins its off-season, and for the second time in three weeks their opponent will be Port Melbourne at Box Hill City Oval. Unlike in their epic Round 7 clash at Fortburn Stadium, a draw will not be enough this time. The (108) to (108) tie will be remembered as one of the best games of the VFL season, but the rematch produced a much different story. That day in Round 18, the Borough was able to hold the VFL s second-highest scoring team to just 58 points, with the resounding 28-point victory over the then ladder-leading Hawks a reminder that Port Melbourne would be a real threat to win its first senior flag since an undefeated season in Behind Williamstown, the Borough is the secondbest defensive side in the competition (conceding 68 points per game), while Box Hill is the second-best scoring side (101 points per game) behind Richmond. This will be a battle of offence and defence and, with a preliminary final berth on the line, a clash not to miss. 2nd ELIMINATION FINAL ESSENDON (6th) vs FOOTSCRAY (7th) Sunday September 3, Fortburn Stadium For the third consecutive year, Essendon and Footscray will do battle in a final. The ledger is currently at 1-1 after the Bombers resounding 66-point win in a 2015 semi final was matched by the Bulldogs 19-point semi-final win last year. Unfortunately for both sides, finals heroes like Alex Browne and Kyle Hardingham for Essendon and Bailey Dale and Mitch Hannan for Footscray instrumental in those past encounters won t be on hand for this clash, with new match-winners needed. The Bulldogs enter September having lost their last two games (one against the Bombers), falling from third position on the ladder to seventh in just three weeks of football. Essendon was able to win three of its last four matches and leap-frog Footscray into sixth spot after their Round 17 clash at Windy Hill. The (88) to (83) victory made sure the Bombers would play finals football and gives them an advantage heading into this clash, where the winner will advance to a match-up with one of the powerhouse sides of the VFL the Box Hill Hawks or Port Melbourne. 13 German on to next project Retiring Coburg senior coach Peter German has talked about what might be in store for him following the end of his long coaching career. Speaking on Monday s VFL Rewind program on 94.1FM 3WBC, German said he was already thinking about the next phase of his life in football. I ve been coaching for 23 years now and it s pretty much all I know in many ways, but I see it as an exciting time, he said. I d really like to get into football management, whether it be list management or recruiting when you coach at VFL level, you re almost list manager as well. I ve had a lot of satisfaction coaching a lot of young men who may not have gone to the top level but just been good quality people... Now is probably the time I can start ringing them up and catching up because there s not much else to do at the moment! Visit vfl.com.au to listen to last week s VFL Rewind podcast featuring the full interview with Peter German. Development League finals An even AFL Victoria Development League season will reach its climax over the next three weeks of finals. Just three wins separated first on the ladder from sixth, with the Casey Demons claiming the minor premiership from Port Melbourne on percentage and the Northern Blues and Sandringham missing out on finals berths by half a game. The Demons and Borough will play off in a qualifying final at Box Hill City Oval from 11am Sunday for a grand final berth, while the third-placed Box Hill Hawks will face fourth-placed Williamstown at Burbank Oval from 11am Saturday to progress to a preliminary final against the loser of the qualifying final. Milestone for Talbot AFL Victoria congratulates field umpire Andrew Talbot for bringing up a significant milestone in Round 19 last week. Talbot officiated in his 150th senior VFL match in the Richmond vs Coburg clash at Punt Road Oval on Sunday. VFL News Lisle wins #RaceforFrosty Port Melbourne key forward Jordan Lisle claimed his second Frosty Miller Medal as the Peter Jackson VFL s leading goalkicker last week in easier-than-expected circumstances. The 27-year-old went into the Borough s Round 19 clash with Collingwood at the Holden Centre even on 42 goals with first-year Magpies dynamo Kayle Kirby, but an anticipated shootout for the title at either end of the ground never eventuated. Kirby was a late callup to Collingwood s final-round AFL team appearing in the fateful defeat of Melbourne at the MCG while Lisle went on to boot four goals in Port Melbourne s six-point victory over the Magpies. His second Frosty Miller Medal comes after he shared the 2015 award with Sam Grimley (Box Hill Hawks) and Liam McBean (Richmond) for a 42-goal season. Finals week 1 milestone men Blake Pearson (Port Melbourne) The following Peter Jackson VFL players will bring up milestones if selected to play in this week s first round of finals: 50 games: - Mitch Honeychurch (Footscray) - Blake Pearson (Port Melbourne) 9

17 Diamond Creek broke away from Melbourne Uni to win in Round 14 VFL Women s The Swisse Wellness VFL Women s top-four positions have been decided and finals now await after Round 14 was completed last week. Darebin (first) will now face Diamond Creek (second) in a qualifying final and Melbourne Uni (third) will take on St Kilda (fourth) in an elimination final, both at Piranha Park in Coburg on Sunday September 10. And as Callum O Connor reports, Diamond Creek prevailed over Melbourne Uni by eight points in a topfour blockbuster at Melbourne University Oval to secure the double chance. The Creekers had to dig deep to win their second clash of the season against the Mugars but found a way to overcome both their opponents and treacherously slippery conditions to win 3.6 (24) to 2.4 (16). Rain and hail battered down before the match and returned intermittently to turn the contest between two skilful sides into a battle of attrition. Although a top-two finish and the finals double chance was on the line, many eyes were on Diamond Creek s dynamo 18-year-old forward Chloe Molloy, who needed just two goals to secure the Choose Tap Leading Goalkicker title in her first VFL Women s season. However, it was clear from the outset that the weather would make goals hard to come by. The Creekers kicked with the wind in the first quarter, but although they peppered the ball forward, it took 17 minutes before Britt Grech broke the deadlock after receiving a free for a ruck infringement. When Melbourne Uni immediately replied through a long bomb from Moana Hope, it was a return on investment for its defensive efforts. The Mugars got on the attack with their run-and-carry game in the second quarter as Gabrielle Pound and Monique Conti skated over the soggy ground. A crucial turning point came halfway through the term when a Diamond Creek free on the half-back line was reversed to Melbourne Uni. Further remonstration saw Mugar midfielder Emma Kearney brought to the goalsquare where she put her side in front for the first time. If they had any chance of building a defendable lead, the Creekers needed to strike quickly. Jess Kennedy and Millie Barden showed ferocious attack on the ball and allowed the run of Lauren Brazzale and Sophie Abbatangelo to drive their team forward. Christina Bernardi was the beneficiary of a holding free and reclaimed Diamond Creek s lead. After having to deal with watertight attention from veteran Melbourne Uni defender Cecilia McIntosh, Molloy finally seized her chance and put through her side s third goal from a free kick to make the margin nine points at the final change. The major helped Molloy draw level with Darebin s Katie Brennan for the goalkicking title. The Creekers stocked up their defence in the final quarter and, try as they might, the Mugars were under too much pressure to finesse their way to forward targets in the wet. Anna Saxton and Kirby Hicks were soon raffling intercept marks in the back line and Melbourne Uni s chances were fading with every passing minute and repelled attack. Molloy was forced into defence late in the game as her opponent McIntosh drifted forward, with the Diamond Creek forward unable to add to her third term goal and forced to share the goalkicking title with Brennan. The Creekers conceded just a single behind in the last quarter, helping them celebrate a win and the finals double chance. In other Round 14 results: - Darebin had a finals dress rehearsal against the VU Western Spurs and came away with a 62-point win, (86) to 4.0 (24). Katie Brennan s five-goal haul saw her come from the clouds to share the Choose Tap Leading Goalkicker title with Diamond Creek s Chloe Molloy. - The Box Hill Hawks finished their inaugural season on a high with a 32-point win over Seaford. The Hawks got off to a hot start and went on to win 8.5 (53) to 3.3 (21). - St Kilda will be hitting finals with a full head of steam after sweeping past Cranbourne by 84 points. The Eagles VFLW licence is set to be allocated to the Casey Demons in 2018 but the Sharks were in no mood for fairytales, spoiling the farewell party by kicking the first 14 goals en route to a 14.8 (92) to 1.2 (8) win. - The Eastern Devils made their last match one to remember as they kicked eight of the last nine goals to storm home over Geelong by 28 points. With finals out of the equation, the Devils had only pride on the line and certainly earned that in the 8.7 (55) to 4.3 (27) win. 13

18 TAC Cup Round 17 Review The top eight for 2017 is close to settled after several important results in Round 17, the penultimate weekend of the TAC Cup home-and-away season. The Northern Knights (7th, 7-9-1) secured their first finals berth since 2013 with a 39-point defeat of the Murray Bushrangers (5th, 10-7) at Norm Minns Oval. After an even first quarter, the Knights drew away with six goals to three in the second term and extended the margin again in the final stanza. Northern s Alex Federico was the game s standout player with 44 disposals, 29 contested possessions, 15 clearances and two goals, while Ethan Penrith kicked three majors and Patrick Naish two for the victors. Meanwhile, the Gippsland Power (8th, 7-10) effectively claimed a finals berth after missing out on September action in 2016 with a 16-point comeback victory over the Western Jets (10th, 5-12) at Morwell Recreation Reserve. Gippsland trailed by 12 points at three-quarter time having managed only four goals for the match, but stormed home with five unanswered majors to end Western s finals hopes. Will Stephenson kicked three goals from 18 disposals for the Power while Callum Porter (20 disposals) and Aidan Quigley (19) were among their biggest ball-winners. Gippsland is now one win and almost 10 percentage points in front of the ninth-placed Calder Cannons with a match against the Bushrangers to come. The Cannons (9th, 6-11) will hope the Power lose that contest by a big margin while enjoying a huge win of their own against the Jets to be any chance of finishing eighth, after Calder defeated the GWV Rebels (11th, ) by 21 points at Mars Stadium in Round 17. The Cannons blew open an even contest with four final-term goals to one to steam to victory, with Brad Bernacki (40 disposals) and Jack Bytel (36) finding the ball at will and Noah Balta, Ben Caluzzi and Aidan Tilley all kicking three majors. The Dandenong Stingrays (3rd, 12-5) can t be moved from third position after beating the Sandringham Dragons (4th, 10-7) by nine points at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. The Stingrays looked to be cruising when 29 points clear at half time, but were forced to respond when Hunter Clark starred for the Dandenong Stingrays in Round 17 Photo: Greg Kowalczewski the Dragons hit the lead late in the third quarter. Subsequent goals to Jai Nanscawen and Hunter Clark saw Dandenong home, with Clark s 29 disposals and two goals for the match a defining factor in the result. Also in Round 17, the top two teams on the ladder flexed some muscle, with the Geelong Falcons (1st, 14-3) prevailing over the Eastern Ranges (6th, 9-8) by 58 points at Deakin University in Geelong and the Oakleigh Chargers (2nd, 14-3) accounting for the Bendigo Pioneers (12th, 3-14) to the tune of 88 points at Warrawee Park. Sam Walsh starred with 30 disposals and three goals for the Falcons as Jack Higgins booted seven majors from 13 disposals for the Chargers, with the 2017 minor premiership to be determined by the results of Geelong s clash against Dandenong and Oakleigh s battle with Eastern in Round 18. There is currently only 0.9 per cent separating the teams. 14

19 TAC Cup News Which team will follow the 2016 Sandringham Dragons as TAC Cup premiers this year? Finals around the corner Round 18 will resolve the last major unknown of the home-and-away season the 2017 minor premier before a revamped TAC Cup finals series kicks off next week. Most positions in the top eight seem close to settled with one round to play, save for first and second spots. The Geelong Falcons and Oakleigh Chargers both have records of 14-3, with the Falcons currently edging the Chargers by 0.9 per cent. The results of Geelong s clash against the third-placed Dandenong Stingrays and Oakleigh s battle with the sixthplaced Eastern Ranges will determine which team wins the minor premiership. Under a new three-week finals structure, there will be four elimination finals next week pitting first against eighth, second against seventh, third against sixth and fourth against fifth. This means the Falcons and Chargers will likely face either the Northern Knights or Gippsland Power in the first week of finals, with the seventh-placed Knights locked into a September berth and the eighth-placed Power one win and almost 10 percentage points ahead of the ninth-placed Calder Cannons. Dandenong is locked into third position and will almost certainly face Eastern next week, meaning the Sandringham Dragons and Murray Bushrangers will take part in the battle of fourth against fifth. The elimination finals will be played across Victoria Park and Mars Stadium, with the four winners to progress to preliminary finals at Simonds Stadium. The TAC Cup Grand Final will then take place at Etihad Stadium from 7.35pm on Sunday September 24. See the full TAC Cup finals structure on page 47 of the AFL Victoria Record. TAC Cup B&F Night The TAC Cup Best and Fairest Night will be live streamed on taccup.com. au from 7pm on Sunday. The night will see the presentation of the Morrish Medal for the TAC Cup s best and fairest player, the TAC Cup Team of the Year and leading goalkicker, as well as the TAC Cup Girls Best and Fairest, Rising Star Award and leading goalkicker. The last two Morrish Medal winners have gone on to be top-five selections in the NAB AFL Draft, with Murray Bushrangers midfielder Clayton Oliver taken by Melbourne at pick no.4 in 2015 and GWV Rebels on-baller Hugh McCluggage taken by Brisbane at pick no.3 last year. The TAC Cup Girls Best and Fairest winners were announced shortly after the inaugural TAC Cup Girls season concluded in April but will formally receive their award on Sunday. Calder Cannons forward Chloe Molloy and Dandenong Stingrays defender Bridie Kennedy jointly won the Best and Fairest before going on to represent Diamond Creek and Cranbourne respectively during the 2017 Swisse Wellness VFL Women s season. Molloy in particular enjoyed a stellar senior campaign, jointly topping the VFL Women s goalkicking count. 15

20 Stats Central Pioneer stands tall Ruck contests are usually the domain of the tallest players on the ground, but the TAC Cup s leading hitout-winner of 2017 so far stands an unusually short 193cm. Bendigo Pioneers top-ager Jobee Warde has won 444 hitouts in 17 matches this season, an average of 26 per game and 124 more than the competition s next best player for total hitouts won. Making the achievement all the more remarkable is the fact the Moama product is at least five centimetres shorter based on start-of-season measurements than the other ruckmen in the top 10 for total hitouts this year (see table below). The next shortest ruckman on the list is the secondranked 198cm Dandenong Stingrays bottom-ager Bailey Williams, whose prodigious leap has seen him average 21 hitouts per game in 14 matches while also making appearances for Vic Country in the NAB AFL U18 Championships. Warde s turn as a ruckman has come due to Bendigo s dearth of genuine height in 2017, with the tallest players on the club s list standing 195cm well under the height of most elite-level ruckmen. One of those players is top NAB AFL Draft prospect Jarrod Brander, who has instead plied his trade mostly as a key-position player in two games at TAC Cup level and while representing the Allies at the U18 Championships. That situation has forced Warde to literally step up, and he has done so in a big way. How he d like to boast the height of Oakleigh Chargers big man Ned Reeves at 207cm, the TAC Cup s tallest player in 2017 and no.10 on the list of total hitout-winners but it seems some heart and a good jump can bring many opponents down to size. Jobee Warde Bendigo Pioneers cm Bailey Williams Dandenong Stingrays cm Matthew Volkanovski Western Jets cm Sam Hayes Eastern Ranges cm Lloyd Meek GWV Rebels cm Julian Patterson Gippsland Power cm Matthew Harman Northern Knights cm Joel Grace Northern Knights cm Mark Marriott Murray Bushrangers cm Ned Reeves Oakleigh Chargers cm Jobee Warde (Bendigo Pioneers) is the TAC Cup s leading hitoutwinner in Northern secured a finals berth thanks to dominance in the contests during a 39-point triumph over the Murray Bushrangers. The Knights won the contested possession count by 32, with Marcellin product Alex Federico winning a mammoth 29 contested possessions 12 more than anyone else in Round Dandenong s efficiency of ball movement was outstanding in a nine-point victory over Sandringham. The Stingrays generated two more inside-50s than the Dragons despite winning 104 fewer disposals, with Hunter Clark (seven inside- 50s), Aiden Bonar and Mitch Cotter (five each) the chief drivers. 39 Calder s ability to find the ball in space was a decisive factor in its 21-point win against the GWV Rebels. The Cannons +39 advantage in uncontested possessions was the biggest difference in an even match, with Brad Bernacki (35) and Jack Bytel (30) the round s leading uncontestedpossession-winners. BENDIGO PIONEERS The Rural Bank Bendigo Pioneers travel this week to Mars Stadium Ballarat where they look forward to meeting the GWV Rebels. Last game we had a disappointing result against a strong Oakleigh Chargers outfit who were far too good on the day after jumping us early with a nine goal to zero first quarter. Our boys came back well over the last three quarters to be outscored 12 goals to 8 after the first quarter. Leading into our last game it gives us the opportunity to thank all our staff for the tireless work they do the for program. The thankyou is extended to staff in all areas of our region including Swan Hill, Mildura, Echuca, Bendigo and Geelong. Particular thanks goes to Geelong Football Club for hosting our boys from Geelong Grammar training with their VFL team at Simonds Stadium, particularly Nathan Tweddle (Manager) and coach Shane O Bree have been so welcoming with these boys. Football Development Manager s throughout our region play such an important part with our program and we would like to thank them very much for their continued support, Trevor Ryan (Sunraysia), Jamie Macri (Central Murray), Trevor Mellington (Goulburn Murray), Tony McNamara (ex AFLCV) and Shane Koop (AFLCV). With the inclusion of Derek Smith Junior into last week s team it took our number of boys played this season to 65. Well done to Rick Coburn and his coaching staff in managing this large group, full credit to the team in developing such a large number of players from vast areas of our region. Important reminder the Neville Strauch Medal is being held on Saturday 14th October at the Bendigo Club in Strathdale. We would love to see as many players and parents attend this evening as it gives everyone an opportunity to catch up socially to and to say their farewells after another successful season. Social Media reminder to like us on Facebook at the Bendigo Pioneers Football Club page and follow us on pioneersbendigo to keep up with all the happenings with the Pioneers. 23

28 Club Notes CALDER CANNONS The Calder Cannons travelled out to MARS Stadium last weekend to play the Rebels in what was a fantastic contest from start to finish. Both teams displayed patches of free-flowing football and hard fought contests throughout the match with the Calder boys coming away with the win. Coming into the last round of the season, and still a slight chance of a finals shot, the Cannons encourage all families, friends and sponsors to get down to RAMS Arena for what will be a fantastic morning of TAC Cup Football. The Calder Cannons would like to thank all staff members on their efforts throughout the season and across all squads that have taken place. The contribution that each individual has provided has been invaluable to the continued success and developement of every player that has played at the club this season. The Calder Cannons alongside the Western Jets will be raising funds and awareness on Saturday 2nd September for the Ronald McDonald House, with donation tins, raffles and record takings all being donated to a fantastic cause. The Cannons would like to thank Tim Michell and the whole Calder Media team for their efforts with CalderCannonsFC, Facebook at Calder Cannons Football Club, and The media team were fantastic in continually developing stories and supporting players and sponsors throughout season 2017 with all boys and girls squads. Go the mighty Cannons! DANDENONG SOUTHERN STINGRAYS Our players responded to a wakeup call at the final break with the Sandringham Dragons showing why they are one of the best regarded teams in the TAC Cup this year. The game was fast flowing and highly contested football all day, with both sides having their opportunity to dominate the scoreboard. We took control in the second term, but a lapse and momentum swing in the third to the Dragons saw a real arm wrestle in the last in which we were lucky to be in front when the siren sounded. This week we have an amazing challenge ahead of us as we take on one of the most highly rated midfield team this year, as well as being on an old AFL ground. The Geelong Falcons at Victoria Park, where if they win they may claim top spot on the home and away ladder and with us secured third spot no matter the outcome- it should be a cracker of a game in the lead up to the TAC Cup finals. Reminder to players, parents and staff to book in for the 2017 presentation night with Peter Dye. Rayscave2017. GEELONG FALCONS Round 17 of the TAC Cup saw us return home to play Eastern in our first match for competition points at Deakin University Waurn Ponds. Despite very wet conditions early, our boys jumped out of the blocks to take a 24-point lead into the first break. Eastern fought back in the second quarter with two goals to one, however our guys regrouped at the main break and responded by keeping Eastern goalless in the second half to come away with a 58-point win. Cassidy Parish worked tirelessly on-ball, whilst Sam Walsh was everywhere with 30 possessions and 3 goals. Tom McCartin and Adam Garner provided strong targets all day up forward, and Cooper Stephens gave great drive off half-back. Last Friday night, we also saw the retirement of Club legend and AFL great, Luke Hodge. A member of our 2001 premiership team, Hodgey retires as a four-time premiership player, three-time premiership captain, twotime Norm Smith Medallist, three-time All-Australian, two-time Peter Crimmins Medallist and a Jim Stynes Medallist. Congratulations Hodgey on a remarkable career - the Club is very proud of all you achieved. This Sunday 3 September, we play our final home-andaway game against Dandenong at Victoria Park. For all updates, please visit the Geelong Falcons Facebook page, our Instagram account (@geelongfalcons) or our twitter account (@geelongfalcons). GIPPSLAND POWER Round 17 was a must win game for both Gippsland and Western to give themselves a chance to make the final 8. At the end of a tight third quarter both sides had kicked twelve behinds each and Western went into the final break with a two-goal lead. Power went on to kick five unanswered goals in the final quarter to come home with a sixteen-point victory and a great chance at playing finals footy. The final game of the home and away season sees Power come up against the fifth placed Murray Bushrangers in the second game of a double header at Victoria Park. A win for Power will cement a spot in the finals for 2017 so it should prove to be a high intense game of TAC Cup football. Gippsland Power would like to thank all our sponsors for the 2017 season, which have made the season possible. ENGIE, Gippsland Motor Group, Warragul Linen Service, Morwell RSL, Office National Warragul and Traralgon, Manny s Market, South East Podiatry, Medico and Patties Pies. We would also like to thank the staff, players and their families and supporters over the course of season so far, for the outstanding support we have received. Hopefully it can continue into September. Please check our website (gippslandpower@aflvic.com.au) for information throughout the season, Facebook page (Gippsland Power Football Club), Instagram (@gippslandpowerfc) and Twitter page (@Gippsland_Power) for photos, results and score updates. 24

Please head to Go Rebels MURRAY BUSHRANGERS The Murray Bushrangers head into the final round of the TAC Cup after a 39-point defeat to the Northern Knights in front of a home crowd at Wangaratta. The Knights didn t allow the Bushrangers to get the game plan into actions and their leg speed left the Bushrangers flat footed at times. Prior to his injury Laitham Vandermeer used his pace to stream the ball forward along with Doulton Langlands whose run continues to impress all observers adding two classy goals. Joe Richards kicked a goal rotating through the midfield and forward. Defender Jordon Butts was strong in defence often winning contests when outnumbered and his ability to read the play was excellent. Nathan Oakes in his return from long term injury was fierce at the contest; and Will Donaghey found multiple possessions from defence to drive the ball forward. Nick Murray continues to play his role to the coach s instructions in his fifth consecutive game at TAC Cup level. This weekend, the Murray Bushrangers take on Gippsland Power at Victoria Park in Abbotsford (Collingwood s old home ground) to round out the 2017 season on Sunday September 2017 at 2.00pm. The game will be the second of a double header. With finals just a week away, The Bushrangers players need to be doing their best on and off the field to achieve their best. The Murray Bushrangers would like to congratulate in advance all the award recipients for the TAC Cup Best and Fairest night this weekend. Please support our local sponsors - YARRAWONGA MULWALA GOLF CLUB RESORT, AFL SPORTSREADY, DYSONS, DUNSTANS CONSTRUCTION GROUP, RELIANCE PARTNERS, SEYMOUR MCDONALDS, BYRNE REMOVALISTS AND STORAGE and THALES. Good luck to all teams this weekend. NORTHERN KNIGHTS This week the Northern Knights take on the Sandringham Dragons at MARS Stadium. Today is a fantastic opportunity for the boys to build on last week s performance against the Murray Bushrangers. We look forward to a great contest between the two sides. Congratulations to two former Knights in Patrick Lipinksi who made his debut for the Western Bulldogs over the weekend and to Brent Stanton who retires after 255 games with Essendon. Further congratulations to Jaden Collins, winner of the Northern Knights U15 YJFL Rising Star Award. Also to Ellie McKenzie, winner of the Northern Knights U15 YJFL Girls Rising Star Award. Well done to also Sunny Brazier who made his debut for the Knights over the weekend. We thank them for their generous ongoing support of the talent pathway in the Northern Metropolitan Region. WESTERN JETS The Western Jets will finish our 2017 TAC Cup season this Saturday when we take on our neighbours the Calder Cannons at RAMS Arena. The two clubs are both supported by McDonalds and will once again play for the McDonalds Cup. There will also be auction items, pre and post-match functions on Saturday to help raise funds for sick kids at Ronald McDonald House. We encourage all parents to support this wonderful cause.
