Recognising our talent Awards season is here, when we recognise some of the best players from across our VFL and TAC Cup competitions. Last weekend a host of up-and-coming TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls players were rewarded for impressive seasons, with a new-look awards night format introduced for the first presentation evening for the two under-18 competitions. Jack Higgins was named the first Oakleigh Chargers Morrish Medal winner, rewarded for a strong second half of the season off the back of winning Vic Metro s MVP award following the 2017 NAB AFL U18 Championships. Dandenong Stingray Bridie Kennedy and Calder Cannon Chloe Molloy were recognised as the joint TAC Cup Girls best-and-fairest players, with the pair announced winners of the inaugural award earlier this year. It begins a big few weeks for Molloy, as she lines up for Diamond Creek in the Swisse Wellness VFL Women s finals series this Sunday before being honoured on Monday at the VFL Best & Fairest night with her second goalkicking title in the last five months as joint-winner of the Choose Tap VFL Women s goalkicking award, following on from the TAC Cup Girls title. This weekend we begin the Swisse Wellness VFL Women s finals, after a break for the AFL Women s State of Origin clash. It was great to see some of the best players from our competition representing not only Victoria but also the Allies in the match, with up to 20 of the 27 VFL Women s players in action last Saturday night set to take to Piranha Park, Coburg this Sunday as the premiership battle between Darebin, Diamond Creek, Melbourne Uni and St Kilda kicks off. The season decider will be played on Sunday September 24 as part of a triple-header state-league Grand Final day with the TAC Cup and VFL competitions. It was an exciting start to the Peter Jackson VFL Love the Game Finals Series last weekend. Football fans were treated to four close contests across the AFL-free weekend. With no AFL in Melbourne on Saturday or Sunday again this weekend, we look forward to good crowds and strong Channel 7 ratings, with an average viewership of over 240,000 across Victoria tuning in for week one of the finals. 7 Higgins wins TAC Cup s Morrish Medal Oakleigh Chargers midfielder/forward Jack Higgins claimed his club s first-ever Morrish Medal for the TAC Cup s best and fairest player during the 2017 home-andaway season at the TAC Cup boys and TAC Cup Girls awards night on Sunday. The 18-year-old East Malvern (South Metro Junior FL) product polled 22 votes the highest tally since 2011 in 13 games for minor premier Oakleigh, a club that has won four TAC Cup premierships in its 23-year history but hadn t previously produced a Morrish Medallist. Higgins finished two votes clear of Calder Cannons skipper Brad Bernacki (20 votes), with Geelong Falcons goalkicker Gryan Miers (15), Sandringham Dragons 19-year-old Hamish Brayshaw (15) and Eastern Ranges big man Sam Hayes (14) rounding out the top five on the leaderboard. Brayshaw led the count after Round 8 with 12 votes (ahead of Miers on 10), having polled maximum votes in four games before progressing to play 12 senior VFL games for the Sandringham Zebras. Bernacki assumed leadership of the count with four consecutive three-vote performances and a two-vote performance between Rounds 8 and 12, sitting clear of Brayshaw on 16 votes at the end of that run. Higgins didn t play from Round while representing Vic Metro at the NAB AFL U18 Championships and was five votes behind Bernacki when he resumed in the TAC Cup in Round 13. He commenced his charge immediately with a three-vote performance, before drawing level with Bernacki following a two-vote performance in Round 15, moving clear with three votes in Round 16 and then taking an unassailable lead in the count with another three votes in Round 17 the penultimate round of the home-andaway season. 178cm Higgins averaged 24 disposals, five marks and six tackles per game this season, while also kicking 29 goals to finish seventh on the TAC Cup goalkicking table. The NAB AFL Academy member polled three votes in five games, two votes on three occasions and one vote once, with his three-vote performances including: - 28 disposals and one goal in a 40-point win against the GWV Rebels at Warrawee Park in Round 6; - 20 disposals, seven marks and four goals in an 88-point win against the Dandenong Stingrays at Shepley Oval in Round 7; - 30 disposals, 11 clearances, seven tackles and two goals in a 48-point win against GWV at Eureka Stadium in Round 13; - 21 disposals, seven tackles and three goals in an eight-point win against Sandringham at Rams Arena in Round 16; and - 13 disposals and seven goals in an 88-point win against the Bendigo Pioneers at Warrawee Park in Round MORRISH MEDAL LEADERBOARD Jack Higgins Oakleigh Chargers 22 Brad Bernacki Calder Cannons 20 Gryan Miers Geelong Falcons 15 Hamish Brayshaw Sandringham Dragons 15 Sam Hayes Eastern Ranges 14 James Worpel Geelong Falcons 13 Toby Wooller Oakleigh Chargers 13 Callum Porter Gippsland Power 12 Jaidyn Stephenson Eastern Ranges 12 Will Stephenson Gippsland Power 12 Daniel Johnston Murray Bushrangers 11 Cassidy Parish Geelong Falcons 11 * Visit taccup.com.au for full voting 3

The 2017 VFL Best & Fairest Night will see one Swisse Wellness VFL Women s player walk away with the game s highest individual honour the VFL Women s Best & Fairest Award. First won by Darebin champion Daisy Pearce in the inaugural 2016 season, the award is set to be hotly contested yet again. With the introduction of AFL Women s and a number of players rested throughout the season, this year s award is wide open. Callum O Connor takes a look at the players that have impressed him from the top four teams on the ladder this season. Watch the live stream of the VFL B&F Night on vfl.com.au from 7pm Monday VFL Women s Best & Fairest preview Melbourne Uni s Alicia Eva KATIE BRENNAN (Darebin Falcons) Games: 10 / Goals: 32 Champions step up when they ve got a point to prove. Brennan spent the AFLW season frustrated by an ankle injury that saw the Bulldogs marquee selection and inaugural captain play just two games. The power forward was similarly hampered early in the VFLW season but once she regained full fitness, Brennan showed she had lost none of her touch and was at the peak of her powers in her 32-disposal, 14-mark, four-goal performance in the Round 11 top-of-the-table clash with Diamond Creek. She came home with a full head of steam, kicking 20 goals in her last three games to share the Choose Tap Goalkicking Award with Chloe Molloy, who had held the lead all season. Other Darebin players to watch: Darcy Vescio, Karen Paxman CHLOE MOLLOY (Diamond Creek) Games: 14 / Goals: 32 Watching Molloy strut her stuff up forward in 2017, it was hard to believe the 18-year old was in her first season of senior football. She was in white-hot form before the VFLW season even started, winning both the TAC Cup Girls Best & Fairest award (jointly) and the leading goalkicker award after an outstanding campaign for the Calder Cannons, then gravitated almost immediately to the position of Diamond Creek s key forward with 10 goals in her first two VFLW matches. Molloy combines a vice-like marking grip with an incredible knack for hitting the ground running and using her agility to evade tacklers. Few are as accurate in front of goal, which meant the youngster could turn a match with only a handful of opportunities. Other Diamond Creek players to watch: Al Downie, Emma Grant ALICIA EVA (Melbourne Uni) Games: 14 / Goals: 7 26-year old Eva had already established a place as an outside runner and an undeniable play-maker but took her game to new heights in The Melbourne Uni/GWS on-baller pushed herself to become an elite inside midfielder, reaching more contests and impacting games with a new-found physicality while maintaining her good decision-making when disposing of the ball. Considering she was redefining her style, Eva s consistency was remarkable she played every game and featured in the best players 12 of a possible 14 times. Coach Andrew Jago lauds the leadership his vice-captain has shown, noting her defensive running has far exceeded the standard his side has set. Other Melbourne Uni players to watch: Ellie Blackburn, Emma Kearney TILLY LUCAS-RODD (St Kilda) Games: 13 / Goals: 4 There is an admirable lack of pretension to Lucas- Rodd s game style: She wins the ball, she clears the ball, and she does both prolifically. The 21-year old Carlton AFLW star s rise saw her win a NAB Rising Star nomination and she hit the ground running this VFLW season. Alongside fellow midfielders Jenna Bruton and 2016 VFLW Best & Fairest runner-up Brianna Davey, Lucas-Rodd was a mainstay in St Kilda s mission of holding onto a top-four position without 2016 s century-goalkicker Moana Hope. Her match-turning performances against Melbourne Uni in Round 9 and the Eastern Devils in Round 11 were not only crucial in shoring up a finals spot for the Sharks, they were the mark of a player maturing from precocious talent to crunch-time performer. Other St Kilda players to watch: Jasmine Garner, Brianna Davey 7

Peter Jackson VFL Love the Game Semi Finals P review 1st SEMI FINAL Richmond s Jacob Ballard Photo: Cameron Grimes CASEY DEMONS vs RICHMOND Saturday September 9, Fortburn Stadium A preliminary-final date with the Box Hill Hawks awaits the team that can best withstand opposition pressure in what is set to be a highly-contested match. Richmond was the VFL s top scoring team during the home-and-away season (booting almost 28 points more per game than Casey), primarily using the ball by foot once clear of congestion to give dangerous forwards such as Ben Lennon (40 goals in 2017), Tyson Stengle (28) and Sam Lloyd (23) a host of opportunities to score. While the Tigers may have only put 76 points on the board in the teams Round 12 clash in Beaconsfield, they held the Demons to just seven majors in a 28-point win on the back of dominance in the contests. Casey will need to match the ability of Richmond hard-nuts such as Anthony Miles, Jacob Ballard and Brandon Wood or at least pressure their kicking game enough to force crucial turnovers. Indeed, the Demons are the top-ranked tackling team in the competition and if the likes of Corey Maynard, Tom Bugg and Jay Kennedy-Harris can bring their usual pressure, they may be able to use their slick ball movement to feed exciting goalkicker Bayley Fritsch inside 50. 2nd SEMI FINAL PORT MELBOURNE vs FOOTSCRAY Sunday September 10, Fortburn Stadium Port Melbourne s ability to win the ball in space will be crucial in deciding which team advances to a preliminary final against Williamstown. The Borough has been transformed from a top-three team for contested possessions and clearances per game in 2016 into a top-two team for uncontested possessions and marks this year, and that new game style was on full show in their 30-point victory over Footscray at Fortburn Stadium in Round 5. Trailing by three points at the last change, Port Melbourne exploded with seven goals to two in the final quarter as highly skilled runners such as Eli Templeton, Damian Mascitti and Brodie Murdoch cut the Bulldogs to ribbons. If the reigning premiers can t win first use of the ball in the contests through hard-nuts like Nick Jamieson, Lukas Webb and Liam Nash, Borough inside midfielders Toby Pinwill and Tom O Sullivan will feed their teammates on the outside all day long. As they did so effectively against Essendon last week, Footscray defenders Matthew Boyd, Jordan Russell and Bailey Williams might be called upon to repel a raft of opposition forward thrusts as well as blunting the impact of dangerous Port Melbourne goalkickers Jordan Lisle and Dylan Conway. Footscray s Liam Nash 8

Week 1 finals recap 1st QUALIFYING FINAL WILLIAMSTOWN (118) d CASEY DEMONS 11.7 (73) Goalkicking sprees were the order of the day at Burbank Oval, as Williamstown booked a preliminary-final berth and forced Casey into a semi final against Richmond. The Seagulls blew the contest open by booting eight unanswered goals with the breeze to open the second quarter, but the Demons then reeled off the game s next nine majors to take the lead early in the final term. However, Williamstown answered again with eight straight goals to steam to a see-sawing victory. 2nd QUALIFYING FINAL BOX HILL HAWKS (77) d PORT MELBOURNE 9.10 (64) Box Hill repelled a raft of Port Melbourne challenges during a tense contest at Box Hill City Oval to advance to a preliminary final. The Hawks stunned the Borough early, piling on four unanswered goals in the first 19 minutes of the match before Port Melbourne fought back into the game on several occasions to eventually draw level into time-on of the final quarter. That only spurred Box Hill to find yet another gear though, as Brendan Whitecross and Andrew Moore booted late goals to see their team home. 1st ELIMINATION FINAL RICHMOND (85) d COLLINGWOOD 11.7 (73) Richmond prevailed over Collingwood in a 10-goal final-term shootout at Fortburn Stadium to advance to a semi final against the Casey Demons. The game looked over during the second term as the Tigers jumped out to a 36-point lead, but after kicking just one major to half time, the Magpies surged to the lead into time-on of the last quarter. With scores then level late in the match, Sam Lloyd and Jake Batchelor booted goals to see Richmond home. 2nd ELIMINATION FINAL FOOTSCRAY (96) d ESSENDON (91) Footscray prevailed in a see-sawing contest at Fortburn Stadium to end Essendon s season and progress to a semi final against Port Melbourne. The Bulldogs used the breeze in the opening quarter to create a 13-point lead at the first change, but could only watch as the Bombers changed the game with five unanswered goals to start the second term. Footscray lifted its intensity to storm back into the match and build an 18-point advantage midway through the final stanza before holding off a late Essendon challenge. * See full match details on page 31 of the AFL Victoria Record. VFL News Tsitas named top Cat Ball-winning midfielder James Tsitas won Geelong s 2017 VFL best-and-fairest award last week. In his second season with the Cats after two years at North Ballarat, the 22-year-old averaged 26 disposals at 77 per cent efficiency, six tackles and four clearances per game in 15 matches before suffering a season-ending knee injury in Round 16. Tsitas finished ahead of fellow VFL-listers Ben Reid in second and Geelong co-captain Jake Edwards in third. Russell calls time Dual Footscray premiership captain Jordan Russell has announced to his teammates that he ll retire from playing in the Peter Jackson VFL at the end of the 2017 season. The 30-year-old has been a development coach at the Western Bulldogs since 2014 and will now concentrate more of his energy on those duties. A 125-game AFL defender with Carlton and Collingwood, Russell was the stand-in captain for the Bulldogs 2014 flag triumph and led the club in his own right for last year s success. He has played 137 total senior VFL games for the Northern Blues, Collingwood and Footscray since Milestone man Port Melbourne s Eli Templeton The following Peter Jackson VFL player will bring up a milestone if selected to play in this week s Semi Final: 50 games: - Eli Templeton (Port Melbourne/ex-St Kilda) 9

Stats Central The contested marking of Arryn Siposs (R) was a key factor in Williamstown s Qualifying Final win Keys to September success Stats Central this week looks at one key stat that helped teams to victory in the first week of the Peter Jackson VFL Love the Game Finals Series. 1st QUALIFYING FINAL WILLIAMSTOWN d CASEY DEMONS With these two hardened teams generally breaking even in the contests, Williamstown s 45-point victory was strongly influenced by the marking ability of its forward targets, who then converted their opportunities into goals. The Seagulls took 14 contested marks in difficult conditions at Burbank Oval compared to Casey s nine, with Arryn Siposs (five goals), Lachlan Schultz (two) and Ayce Cordy (one) all taking three contested marks while Sam Dunell (four majors) and Leigh Masters (one) took two each. In contrast, Demons forward Bayley Fritsch (three contested marks and four goals) was the only consistent aerial threat up the other end. 2nd QUALIFYING FINAL BOX HILL HAWKS d PORT MELBOURNE As the Hawks have done many times in finals of recent years, they dominated possession of the ball in space during their 13-point triumph, recording 32 more uncontested possessions and 38 more uncontested marks than Port Melbourne. But perhaps more impressively, Box Hill also demonstrated some defensive steel by laying 17 more tackles than the Borough. The toughness of Mitch O Donnell stood out as he laid a gamehigh 10 tackles, while Andrew Moore, Brendan Whitecross and back-line general David Mirra recorded seven each and 202cm ruckman Marc Pittonet also got his hands dirty with six. 1st ELIMINATION FINAL RICHMOND d COLLINGWOOD Richmond s thrilling 12-point win was built on superiority in the contests, beating Collingwood in the contested-possession count by 11, in the tackle count by seven and in the clearance count by eight. The ability of Tigers hard-nuts to clear the ball from congestion and provide their forwards with 11 more inside-50 entries from which to potentially score was an important difference in a tight battle. Anthony Miles proved crucial with a game-high nine clearances, while Corey Ellis (seven clearances), Jacob Ballard (six) and Sam Lloyd (five) were other key members of Richmond s on-ball brigade. 2nd ELIMINATION FINAL FOOTSCRAY d ESSENDON Essendon might feel like this was one that got away, with the Bombers going down by five points despite beating Footscray in almost every key statistical category. The one that went the Bulldogs way other than the final scoreboard was the rebound-50 count, with a handful of resilient defenders helping restrict Essendon to just 13 goals from 63 inside-50s (21 per cent efficiency compared with Footscray s 24 per cent). The experience of Matthew Boyd proved crucial as he recorded a game-high nine rebound-50s for the Bulldogs, while back-line buddies Bailey Williams and skipper Jordan Russell each recorded six. See the VFL Finals Week 1 stats leaders on page 30 of the AFL Victoria Record 10

Brianna Davey will be important for St Kilda s chances in finals Photo: Kadek Thatcher VFL Women s Finals Week 1 Preview The first week of the Swisse Wellness VFL Women s finals series kicks off this weekend, with two intriguing matches to be played by very evenly matched teams. As Mitch Wynd writes, both finals will be played at Piranha Park in Coburg on Sunday. The first match of the day is the Elimination Final between Melbourne Uni (third at the end of the home-and-away season) and St Kilda (fourth) at 11am. Melbourne Uni senior coach Andrew Jago summed up his team s season so far. We achieved a few of the things that we wanted to, but we didn t achieve everything that we wanted to achieve, he said. Hopefully we re still improving and we re finally getting our full combination back on the park. Hopefully we ve got some improvement left in us for the next couple of games. The Mugars have already faced the Sharks twice this season, for one win and one loss. Explaining what they learned about their opponents in their battles, Jago highlighted the quality of some of the St Kilda players. Brianna Davey is a dominant player, Phoebe McWilliams is having a really good year and Jasmine Garner is in the best form of her life, he said. Maddie Gay has also come in and had a huge impact since she s come into the midfield. They re a well-coached, well-balanced team and they re going to be difficult to keep up with, that s for sure. Sunday s second match is the Qualifying Final between Darebin (first at the end of the home-andaway season) and Diamond Creek (second) at 1pm, with the winner to progress to the Grand Final and the loser to face the winner of the Melbourne Uni vs St Kilda clash. Like the other two finalists, Darebin and Diamond Creek finished equal on wins (12-2 apiece), with only percentage separating the two. Also like the other finalists, the two sides have each claimed a victory over the other this year, the Creekers winning a thriller at home by one point in Round 3 and the Falcons bouncing back to win by 25 points in Round 11. Darebin senior coach Jane Lange said the Falcons learned a lot of lessons about Diamond Creek from the single-point defeat early in the season. They hold onto the ball a lot better than what they have in the past, so that s a real difference in terms of how we have to be ensuring that we re really solid across our defence, Lange said. But all lines are really accountable for their opponents and they bring a lot of fierce contest around the footy, so it s really important that we can match them in that area around stoppages and in contested ball. As for the Creekers, senior coach Scott Gowans said they also have a number of quality opponents they will have to restrict throughout the day. They ve got so many good players, he said. I looked at a photo the other day of the AFLW captains and three of them were Darebin players, so that s pretty daunting. In terms of match-ups, we haven t really gone with a lot of match-ups this year. We ve played with a team defence mindset so we re going to have to defend whatever they dish up, but Katie Brennan is probably a step above most other players in the competition and we have to put some time into her. An extra concern for the Falcons is their seven players who were on AFL Women s State of Origin duties last weekend. The girls feel pretty good about their bodies and we ve rested them across the last few weeks, so hopefully that s made a difference to them, Lange said. We just need them to get through the State of Origin match and come out of that unscathed, and I ll finally be able to breathe a little bit! 11

TAC Cup Finals Series Week 1 Preview By Jake Morris 1st ELIMINATION FINAL OAKLEIGH CHARGERS (1st) vs NORTHERN KNIGHTS (8th) Saturday September 9, Victoria Park Fresh off his Morrish Medal triumph the first in Oakleigh s history Jack Higgins and his Chargers are in high spirits after claiming the minor premiership last week with a convincing 45-point win over the Eastern Ranges, enough to see them jump the Geelong Falcons and snatch top spot. They ll meet a Northern Knights side entering the clash off a 45-point loss at the hands of the Sandringham Dragons. Head coach Justin Wenke s men will enter the match as underdogs, with an 84-point loss to Oakleigh in Round 10 serving as a reminder of what their opponent is capable of. Chargers forward Daniel Stanford got a hold of the Knights that day, booting four goals as Lachlan Bugeja was named best-onground with 24 disposals and six tackles in the wire-to-wire victory. The winner of this clash will face off against the winner of the clash between Sandringham and the Murray Bushrangers. 3rd ELIMINATION FINAL DANDENONG STINGRAYS (3rd) vs EASTERN RANGES (6th) Saturday September 9, Victoria Park This match features the in-form Dandenong Stingrays winners in three of their last four games and the Eastern Ranges, who will be out for revenge after a 63-point defeat at the hands of the Stingrays in Round 8. In that encounter, the Stingrays were led by forwards Tom De Koning and Jai Nanscawen who kicked four goals apiece, as well as 24 disposals and 10 tackles from Mitchell Cotter, as they blew away Eastern with an eight-goal-to-one second term. Josiah Duncan kicked three majors for the Ranges but his side wasn t able to match Dandenong s potent scoring ability. Eastern did end the home-and-away season with two clashes against ladder leaders the Geelong Falcons and then the Oakleigh Chargers though, which could provide them with a good idea of what to expect from their opponents this weekend. The winner of this clash will square up against the winner of the match between Geelong and the Gippsland Power. 2nd ELIMINATION FINAL GEELONG FALCONS (2nd) vs GIPPSLAND POWER (7th) Sunday September 10, Mars Stadium As the second-highest-scoring side in the TAC Cup, the Falcons enter this match on a six-game winning streak with an average winning margin of 43 points per game. Despite this, they were unable to hold onto the minor premiership, conceding top spot to the Oakleigh Chargers in the last home-and-away round and setting up a date with Gippsland, a side they split their season series with. The Power enters the match on a three-game winning streak and with some confidence from a five-point victory over the Geelong in Round 9, but they did also suffer a 64-point loss to the Falcons in Round 15. Gippsland with need to watch Geelong forward Gryan Miers, who finished third in Morrish Medal voting also on the goalkicking leaderboard, while Geelong will have an eye on the Power s Callum Porter, who averages over 20 disposals seven tackles per game. The winner will face either the Dandenong Stingrays or Eastern Ranges in a preliminary final. 4th ELIMINATION FINAL SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS (4th) vs MURRAY BUSHRANGERS (5th) Sunday September 10, Mars Stadium The clash could be a real battle of defence and offence. The Bushrangers scored more than 12 points per game than the Dragons during the home-and-away season but also conceded more than 15 points per game than their opponents, meaning they ll be looking to clamp down defensively while continuing their prolific scoring in order to prevail this weekend. A Round 7 match-up between the sides saw Murray come out on top by 23 points, as the home team limited Sandringham to just 66 points. Three goals apiece from Riley Bice and the TAC Cup s leading goalkicker Daniel Johnston helped the Bushrangers to victory, but head coach Jeremy Barnard s Dragons are the competition s thirdbest team for points conceded (61 per game) and they ll be looking for revenge. The Oakleigh Chargers or Northern Knights await the winner of this encounter next week. 16

TAC Cup Round 18 Review The Oakleigh Chargers snatched the TAC Cup minor premiership from the Geelong Falcons in the final week of the 2017 home-and-away season. Having entered Round 18 even on wins but 0.9 percentage points behind the ladder-leading Geelong, Oakleigh won its last-round match by a greater margin than the Falcons did in a victory of their own to claim the first minor premiership of its 23-year history in the competition. The Chargers (15-3, 166.5%) finished just 1.8 percentage points in front of Geelong (164.7%) after defeating the Eastern Ranges (6th, 9-9) by 45 points at Mars Stadium. The Ranges were within five points of Oakleigh at three-quarter time, but the Chargers accelerated with seven goals to one in the final term to help it secure top spot. Jack Roughsedge and Luke Stacker (27 disposals each) were the biggest ball-winners for the victors. Meanwhile, the Falcons (15-3) prevailed over the Dandenong Stingrays (3rd, 12-6) at Victoria Park, but the eight-point margin wasn t enough to help them claim the fourth minor premiership of their TAC Cup history. In a low-scoring slog that produced only 12 total goals, Geelong s three unanswered majors in the third quarter created a lead too great for the Stingrays to overcome. Sam Walsh won a game-high 32 disposals for the Falcons, while Cooper Stephens and Josh Jaska were influential in defence. Dandenong will now face Eastern and Geelong will meet the Gippsland Power (8-10) in the first week of finals, with Gippsland jumping into seventh spot with an 18-point victory over the Murray Bushrangers (5th, 10-8) at Victoria Park. Following an even first half, the Power s six-goal-toone third term set up their win, with Sam Flanders and Caleb Serong both kicking two majors for the quarter and Will Stephenson also important inside 50 with three goals for the match. Murray will be this week s finals opponent for the Sandringham Dragons (4th, 11-7), who sent the Northern Knights (7-10-1) from seventh on the ladder to eighth and into a finals date with Oakleigh with a 45-point win at Mars Stadium. Hamish Brayshaw returned from a long TAC Cup absence while playing for Sandringham in the VFL The Oakleigh Chargers soared to the TAC Cup minor premiership in Round 18 Photo: Greg Kowalczewski with game-highs of 30 disposals, 11 tackles and five goals for the Dragons, while his younger brother Andrew Brayshaw had 24 disposals and booted one major. Also in Round 18, the bottom four teams played off against each other, with the Western Jets (10th, 6-12) beating the Calder Cannons (9th, 6-12) by 21 points at Rams Arena and the GWV Rebels (11th, ) accounting for the Bendigo Pioneers (12th, 3-15) to the tune of 27 points at Mars Stadium. The Jets came from six points down at the final change against the Cannons, driven by 24 disposals, 15 tackles and three goals from Lachlan Fogarty as well as 25 disposals, 21 hitouts and two majors from Tristan Xerri, while five unanswered goals in the first term set up GWV s triumph, with Dale Cox (two majors) the game s only multiple goalkicker. 17

Stats Central Ben Caluzzi of the Calder Cannons led the TAC Cup for total kicks in 2017 High-possession heroes Some of the biggest possession-winners of the TAC Cup home-and-away season come from teams that won t be seen in the upcoming finals series. In recent weeks Stats Central has featured the TAC Cup s top players for total tackles and hitouts and this week we look at those topping the lists for total kicks, marks and handballs. The Calder Cannons, GWV Rebels and Bendigo Pioneers all finished outside the top eight but it wasn t due to a lack of effort on the part of several prolific ball-winners. Calder s Ben Caluzzi recorded the most kicks in the competition in 2017 with 281 in 18 matches at an average of 16 per game, just ahead of GWV s Aiden Domic with 277 in 18 games. Domic is one of the TAC Cup s best players at finding space, also topping the list of total marks with 109 at an average of six per game. Meanwhile, Bendigo s Darby Henderson has dished off the most handballs this year with 269 in 18 matches at an average of 15 per game. From those teams appearing in finals, watch for Geelong Falcons midfielder Cassidy Parish (second for total handballs) using his sharp hands in congestion and Murray Bushrangers key-position player Jordon Butts (second for total marks) wrapping his mitts around the ball in the air. The Falcons had one less kick than the Stingrays but 28 more handballs, with bottomage St Joseph s product Sam Walsh creating plenty of the play in recording game-highs for handballs (22) and handball-receives (15). 21 Oakleigh dominated possession in a 45-point defeat of Eastern, winning 89 more disposals than the Ranges. 21 Chargers players recorded doublefigure disposal tallies led by Jack Roughsedge and Luke Stacker with 27 each compared to just 10 Eastern players with 10 or more disposals. 11 Gippsland thrived in the contests during an 18-point victory over the Murray Bushrangers, losing the uncontested-possession count by 26 but recording a +11 advantage in contested ball. Sale product Nick Hogan won a game-high 18 contested possessions for the Power in a gritty performance. See the Round 18 TAC Cup stats leaders on page 44 of the AFL Victoria Record 18

EST Club Notes PORT MELBOURNE We added another chapter to the famous recent rivalry of Port Melbourne vs. Box Hill in last Sunday s Qualifying Final at the City Oval. Unfortunately on this occasion, we fell on the wrong side of the ledger as we went down by 13 points in a thriller. The beauty of finishing in the top 4 is a second chance, and we get that when we welcome Footscray to our home ground of Fortburn Stadium this weekend. A win will see us through to a Preliminary Final match-up next week against arch rivals Williamstown! The Development League let slip an opportunity to progress straight to the Grand Final last week against Casey, however they will aim to take the long route into the Decider by overcoming Williamstown in the curtain-raiser. To coincide with our launch of a women s football program in season 2018, there is an upcoming Women s Footy Skills Session being held at Fortburn Stadium on Tuesday 19th September; commencing at 6:00pm. Contact womensfooty@portmelbournefc.com. au via for any further information, and to RSVP your place. On a social note, we are also now taking bookings for our 2017 Vote Count / Presentation Night, to be held on Friday 6th October. Contact the club for any further information. Best of luck to both sides today and fingers crossed for two wins! WILLIAMSTOWN What a fantastic day it was out at Burbank Oval last weekend seeing both Senior & Development teams win their respective finals and go deeper into September action! While our senior team enjoys a week s rest and await the Port Melbourne vs Footscray clash to determine their Preliminary Final opponent, our Development side face a Preliminary Final of their own today against arch-rival Port Melbourne. Best of luck to our Development boys today as they look to make it back to the grand final after missing out last season. If you need to update your Williamstown wardrobe ahead of next week s Preliminary Final at Fortburn Stadium, make sure you head to williamstownfc.com.au to order from a range of new merchandise items including hoodies, t-shirts, caps, beanies, scarves and more! We want to see everyone donning the blue and gold throughout the remainder of the finals series! 30 Club Notes EASTERN RANGES The Eastern Ranges take on the Dandenong Stingrays in Week 1 of the TAC Cup finals. The side is coming off a couple of disappointing losses to end the regular season and will be looking to produce their best in this elimination final. The Ranges finished the season in 6th position on the TAC Cup ladder and with the new elimination-only finals series, play the Stingrays (finished 3rd) in a must win match at Victoria Park. The Ranges were well represented at the Morrish Medal held early this week. Ruckman Sam Hayes polled 14 votes in the Morrish Medal count to finish 5th overall. Jaidyn Stephenson finished 9th with 12 votes. Eastern had the most players selected in the TAC Cup Team of the Year with a total of five. Congratulations to Joel Garner (back pocket), Jaidyn Stephenson (half forward), Sam Hayes (ruck), Adam Cerra (ruck rover) and Dylan Moore (interchange). A total of four Eastern Ranges girls were also selected in the TAC Cup Girls Team of the Year, including Olivia Flanagan (half forward), Emerson Woods (rover), Jorja Borg (interchange) and Georgia McPherson (interchange). Congratulations to all players and staff for once again having a healthy contingent of Eastern Ranges acknowledged at the Morrish Medal. GIPPSLAND POWER A windy afternoon at Victoria Park saw Gippsland Power defeat Murray Bushrangers, which finished off the home and away season with their third win in a row. The win pushed Gippsland into 7th position on the ladder to take on the 2nd placed Geelong Falcons in Ballarat on Sunday the 10th September in an elimination final. The two teams have met twice this year, with both sides getting the four points away from home, so an elimination final on neutral ground should prove to be a cracking game of football. The Morrish Medal was held last weekend, with several Gippsland Power representatives taking the stage to collect an award. Leigh Brown was awarded the Keith Burns TAC Cup Coach of the Year Award for his fantastic work throughout the 2017 season, Callum Porter was named in the TAC Cup Team of the Year as well as Darcy Guttridge and Tyla Hanks being named in the TAC Cup Girls Team of the Year! A magnificent effort for all the hard work they have put into their football throughout the season. Please check our website (gippslandpower@ aflvic.com.au) for information throughout the season, Facebook page (Gippsland Power Football Club), Instagram (@gippslandpowerfc) and Twitter page (@ Gippsland_Power) for photos, results and score updates. Good luck to all teams participating in the finals this weekend. Go Power! GEELONG FALCONS For the final round of the TAC Cup season, we travelled to Victoria Park to play Dandenong. The game turned out to be an arm-wrestle all afternoon, with only a strong thirdquarter performance from our boys really separating the two sides. Whilst we were pleased to come away with an 8-point win, the boys were strong on each other following the game about ensuring we come ready to play for four-quarters ahead of the business end of the year. Cooper Stephens had a great balance all afternoon between attacking flair off half-back and nullifying the influence of his opponent, whilst Josh Jaska was his ever-reliable self deep in defence. In the engine room, Cassidy Parish and Sam Walsh capitalised on the first use from Dane Hollenkamp and Sam Conway, whilst David Handley was busy forward. Following the game, a number of our players and staff members headed across town for the 2017 TAC Cup Best & Fairest award night. Congratulations to Gabrielle Deller (Girls Personal Growth Award), Denby Taylor (Girls Team of the Year), Olivia Purcell (Girls Team of the Year), Lucy McEvoy (Girls Team of the Year), David Handley (TAC Cup Team of the Year), Cassidy Parish (TAC Cup Team of the Year), Gryan Miers (TAC Cup Team of the Year, third place goalkicking and third place Morrish Medal) and James Worpel (captain of TAC Cup Team of the Year) on their awards received on the night. Congratulations also to Lucy and Olivia on their selection in the 2017 NAB AFL Women s U18 All Australian Team. This Sunday 10 September, we play our first final against Gippsland at MARS Stadium at 11.30am. For all updates, please visit the Geelong Falcons Facebook page, our Instagram account (@geelongfalcons) or our twitter account (@geelongfalcons). 26

MURRAY BUSHRANGERS The Murray Bushrangers would like to congratulate all award winners in the TAC Cup Boys and Girls competition. Bec Webster and Illish Ross (Girls team of the year) and Ben Paton (Boys team of the year) and Daniel Johnston (Boys leading goal kicker) were Murray Bushrangers players recognised for their outstanding seasons. Last weekend we finished the home and away season with an 18 point defeat to Gippsland Power. After an even first half the Bushrangers led by two points. However the third term saw the Power really exert their running and forward strength, kicking six goals to one. The Bushies started the last quarter well kicking the opening three goals. However sustained pressure couldn t be maintained and Power were too strong in the final stages to run out deserved winners by 18 points. Doulton Langlands was again prominent with his run and carry which included one goal. Wingman Laitham Vandermeer also provided great run while defender Will Donaghey was good all match with 30 possessions. Alex Paech kicked two goals as a midfielder and Zane Barzen played well across half forward taking several pack marks and kicking two goals. Nathan Oakes continued his good form on return from injury while Nick Murray featured in the Bushrangers best players for his fifth consecutive game at TAC Cup level. Debutant Will Chandler also showed good form kicking two goals. Thank you to Phil Partington and the GWV Rebels staff for your preparation and coordination for this weekend s matches. Please support our local sponsors - YARRAWONGA MULWALA GOLF CLUB RESORT, AFL SPORTSREADY, DYSONS, DUNSTANS CONSTRUCTION GROUP, RELIANCE PARTNERS, SEYMOUR MCDONALDS, BYRNE REMOVALISTS AND STORAGE and THALES. Good luck to all teams this weekend. NORTHERN KNIGHTS This week the Northern Knights take on the Oakleigh Chargers at Victoria Park in an Elimination Final. Today is a fantastic opportunity to test ourselves against the top team in a final and see how far we have come this year. We look forward to a great contest between the teams. Congratulations to Captain Nick Coffield and Patrick Naish who were named in the TAC Cup Team of the Year at the Morrish Medal on Sunday night. Further congratulations to Maddy Guerin who was named in the girls Team of the Year. The Knights would again like to thank Technika, a leading producer of high quality kitchen & laundry appliances, for their 6th year as Major Sponsor of the Club. We thank them for their generous ongoing support of the talent pathway in the Northern Metropolitan Region. OAKLEIGH CHARGERS The home and away season is done and dusted and we now enter the exciting time of the football calendar. A great credit to the playing and coaching group to earn the clubs first ever minor premiership, but this will count for nothing if we don t continue to play to our best in this years cut throat final series. Our final home and away season saw us having to fight hard against a high quality opposition for three and a bit quarters, with our persistence and hard work in the end allowing us to pull away late in the game. This same willingness to work hard will again be required when we take on the Knights today. Congratulations to Jack Higgins on his Morrish Medal win on Sunday night. A great reward for his performances throughout the year, and the dedication that he shows to his footy. A special result being the first ever Charger to be awarded this prestigious award. A special mention to Toby Wooller who finished 2nd in the League Goal Kicking Award, and finished equal 6th in the vote count. A big well done to Jack Roughsedge who was awarded the TAC Cup Personal Growth Award for Some great recognition from the competition for a player who is so highly respected by those both within and outside the club. Don t forget our Best and Fairest Night to be held at the Mulgrave Country Club on Thursday 28th September. Please contact the club for more information. A big thanks to our 2017 sponsors, our major partner, Bendigo Bank Murrumbeena, The Phillips Foundation, Camberwell Toyota, Mulgrave Country Club and Concept Logistics. 27
