1 Martha's Vineyard Surfcasters Association P.O. Box 3053 Edgartown, MA January 2018 Newsletter Hello Surfcasters! Happy New Year! Who s ready to for the warm weather and fish to arrive? We re only days away from our annual banquet on Saturday, January 27 th. Do you know what you re bringing yet dessert or an appetizer? I can t decide. Something chocolatey or a savory app. Might just have to bring both. Invite a friend or two, come solo, but whatever you do - don t miss the party... and the auction and raffle! Yearly Dues and Payments for our June Cuttyhunk trip will be collected at the Banquet. Support our MVSA Scholarship fundraiser: MVSA will be holding our annual used tackle sale on Memorial Day weekend. All monies raised will be contributed to the MVSA scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Don will be collecting used, or new if you don t want it, tackle, nets, waders, jackets, or any fishing-related stuff at the banquet. Don t forget: Bring it to the banquet! Huge THANK YOUs to everyone who donated to the Support Our Troops campaign!

3 Derby History The frigid temperatures of January must have us all wishing for warmer weather, longing to be back out on the shore and feeling the tug of the next big one on the line. While we wait for the spring schoolies to show up, let s continue looking at the achievements of MV Surfcasters in the Derby over the last twenty-eight years. Ron Domurat compiled all these stats for us. Since1989, the MVSA has had 23 Grand Leaders and 3 Grand Prize winners. 8 Meeting Wrap-Up: What You Missed or Forgot 1. Our annual Banquet is Saturday, January 27 at 1 PM at the Old Whaling Church. Members don t forget to bring a side dish or a dessert. 2. MVSA needs people to help set up for the banquet. If you are willing to pitch in, please arrive at 10 AM to lend a hand. If you re willing to help shuck oysters, bring a knife and a rag and come at noon. 3. Kathi is still collecting items for the Banquet raffle. If you have anything to donate, please let Kathi know. She will meet you anywhere if you can t get the item(s) to her. Kathi s number: (508) Ron Domurat is going to help Kathi with the raffle at the Banquet. 4. We will have two levels of raffle prizes this year. Tickets prices: 3 for $5 or 2 for $ Remember, there is NO February meeting. The Banquet is the meeting for February. 6. The MVSA Fishing Tag Sale/Fundraiser will be in May again this year. Don needs donations rods, reels, waders, nets, plugs, whatever fishing gear/stuff you have to give, please bring to the next meeting. We raised $2,000 last year for the scholarship fund, and Don wants to hit that goal again this year. Bring what you have to every meeting, or let Don know and he can pick it up. Don does not need any more fishing line. 7. Yearly dues are due in January. Cost is $30 for the year, whether you re paying for an individual, senior, or family. You can pay at the Banquet if you haven t sent in your check yet. 8. Bob Lane thanked everyone for our Military Donations. He will be making some beef jerky to send in the care package. If anyone wants to make some, contact Bob. The soldiers really liked the jerky last year. The Vineyard Haven VFW will contribute $100 toward the postage costs when Bob sends our care package. 9. Lou Ferrucci donated five fishing mugs for our monthly raffle. Barbara, Dr. Dave, Kathi, Cosmo, and Chantale each won a mug. 10. Don is going to look into prices for MVSA reusable shopping bags. 11. On April 29, there will be a Beach Grass Planting at Lobsterville. Please consider attending and helping out. We all can pitch in to protect our beloved beaches and represent MVSA. We ll have more information in the coming months.

9 12. Cuttyhunk Fishing Trip MVSA is heading back to Cuttyhunk in June. We ll go midweek when it s cheaper and less crowded. We depart Tuesday, June 12 and return on Thursday, June 14. If you re interested, let Don know or sign up at the Banquet. Cost will be $325, which will include a golf cart for our club members to share. 13. Ralph Peckham and President Don shared some their knowledge and secrets on bottom fishing. Ralph is old school old rod, no bait runner, and 30-pound Cajun Red monofilament. He uses a 90-pound leader with a VMC Octopus Hook in the perma-steel finish. Ralph uses a big float and keeps it high. For bait, Ralph will use live bait or frozen mackerel. I don t use big chunks of bait. About an inch to an inch and a half. I bring lots of bait and I check it every ten minutes or so, said Ralph. I go through lots of bait when the small fish are around. Ralph uses an 8-ounce, 4-sided weight. He keeps his drags set pretty tight. The fish can take the line, but he s basically going to hook himself. Bait is most important: keep it fresh and keep changing it. Let the crabs chew it up a bit, chumming up your bait. Don brought in his homemade metal sand spikes. Those spikes are awesome and Don promised they get into the rocky North Shore fairly easily. (I want a couple hint! HINT!) Don uses 50-pound braid for bass, and 120-pound mono during the day when fishing for blues. With two rods in the water, Don lobs one short, and cast the other far. He uses a bait runner and large floats. For bait, I use bunker, squid, albies, butters fresh or frozen, said Don, who uses paperclips for easy change of hooks. As the tides and locations change, so do Don s weights. On the North Shore I ll use a 3- ounce weight. On East Beach I ll use up to a ten pounder. On the Shelf If you re looking for something to warm your heart this winter, pick up a copy of Nelson Sigelman s recent release: Martha s Vineyard Outdoors: Fishing, Hunting, and Avoiding Divorce on a Small Island. One of my favorite lines from the book, There are people who like to fish, and then there are fishermen. The difference is the gulf that separates affection and passion.
