Our vision is of the world s oceans teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations.

Our vision Our Mission is of the world s oceans teeming with to life, use and our seafood eco-label supplies and fishery certification programme to contribute to the health safeguarded of the world s for this oceans by recongising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, and future influencing generations. the choices people make when buying seafood, and working with our partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis.

How do we achieve this? MSC and the Eco-labelling concept Promotes and rewards sustainable fisheries Generates benefits for these fisheries, but also motivate less sustainable fisheries to work towards MSC To deliver a credible message from the supply side to the consumer

Background to the MSC International non-profit organisation, independent since 1999 The MSC operates two leading, global standards to ensure credibility: 1. Standard for sustainable and well-managed fishing 2. Traceability standard called Chain of Custody ztxckxre_-sjei-pxr6o8e0z68gyt1s 6

Background to the MSC: North Atlantic example International non-profit organisation, independent since

Benefits of the MSC programme Potential benefits include: Sustainable fisheries Reputation enhanced Livelihoods protected Access to new markets Existing markets secured Market stability and security Product differentiation Possible price premiums 8

MSC Theory of Change 9

Fisheries which meet the MSC standard are independently certified as sustainable Retailers and restaurants choose MSC certified sustainable seafood More fisheries choose to improve their practices and volunteer to be assessed against the MSC standard How the MSC works with fisheries, suppliers and retailers to encourage a more sustainable seafood market A traceable supply chain assures consumers that only seafood from an MSC certified fishery is sold with the MSC ecolabel Market demand for MSC certified seafood increases Consumers preferentially purchase seafood with the MSC ecolabel MSC 10

Project UK Fisheries Improvements: Credible FIPs A roadmap towards sustainability Credible FIPS make an important contribution to improving overall fisheries health and in promoting sustainable seafood with potential market benefits Initial gap analysis using against MSC Standard (MSC pre-assessment) Develop an Action Plan for improvement Linked to MSC performance indicators Regular reporting of progress against the Action Plan Progress reports prepared & reviewed by MSC assessor to evaluate progress Pre-determined limit to amount of time spent as a FIP Potential for FIP to enter MSC full assessment to demonstrate sustainability 18

Project UK Fisheries Improvements A collaborative stakeholder partnership working towards an environmentally sustainable future for UK fisheries, facilitated by MSC Builds on the outputs and methods of Project Inshore: Pre-assessment process as a tool to inform management Supported by funding partners made up mostly of supply chain and retailers but also NGOs and the fishing industry Multi-stakeholder FIP Steering Groups 19
