2 Annual Report Aquaculture in 17 In brief Index: The Federation of Greek Maricultures (FGM) is one the largest Associations of sea bass and sea bream farmers globally. It was founded in 1989 and currently represents nearly 7% of s production and 7% of the industry s employees. The purpose of this document is to give stakeholders a better insight into the sea bream and sea bass farming industry. Executive summary Country Profile 1. Marine finfish farming in Spatial distribution of farms and labor. Volume and value of main species produced Organic Sea Bream and Other marine species. Economics of sea bass and sea bream farming Feed Market Production of Juveniles. Main markets and trade of sea bass and sea bream State of aquaculture in - Executive Summary In 1, aquaculture production reached 1, with a value of 8. million, which is 1.% less in terms of volume but.% more in terms of value over the previous year. Early forecasts for 1 show % drop of the overall production (1, ). Finfish and mussels are the main groups of produced species. Fish farming (marine and fresh water) holds a dominant position of 8% in volume and 99% in value, followed by mussels with and respectively. Fish farming (marine and fresh water) reached 11, in 1 with an estimated value at first sale of 1.1 million (% less in volume but,% more in value over the previous year). Shellfish production reached 18,1 in 1 with an estimated value of.89 million s (1 more in terms of volume and.8% more in terms of value). In 1 the production of sea bream and sea bass reached 1, with an estimated value at first sale of million. In 1 exports of bass and bream are estimated at 8,, of which 98% are marketed in the EU. In 1 supplied 9% of sea bream and sea bass sold in the EU and sold worldwide. In 17 sea bream and sea bass production is expected to reach 11,, which is.7% more than the previous year.. Growth vision 1 Supported by:. Bibliography 1 Clarifications Methodology The most recent and complete statistics on aquaculture at international and European level are from 1 and mainly provided by the FAO, EUMOFA and the JRC. The most recent and complete statistical data on Mediterranean fish farming (sea bream and sea bass) are from 1 and provided by the FEAP, FGM and Kontali. 17 estimates come from FEAP, FGM and Kontali. Provisional statistical data used in this publication will be updated in upcoming editions and differences may arise. Production of export value denotes the value at the first sale by the producer and not the final price paid by the consumer. The value of aquaculture production at international level is provided by FAO in US dollars and the average annual exchange rate of $1. =.8 (rounded) has been used for conversion. 3 Annual Report Aquaculture in 17 Country Profile 1. Marine finfish farming in % of seafood harvested in comes from aquaculture and the remaining 7% comes from wild cathes. Total seafood harvested from aquaculture amounted to 1,, with an estimated first-sale value of 8. millions (-1.% in volume and.% more in value over the last year). Per capita seafood consumption is kg/person, close to the EU average. ranks nd in volume and nd in value among the EU-8 in fish farming (following the UK). volume 8% Finfish Mussels source: Minagric, FGM Main groups of species produced value 99% thousand Wild catches Aquaculture source: FAO, Minagric, FGM Mariculture is the main aquaculture activity where finfish and shellfish are the main group of species produced. Fish farming represents 8% in terms of volume and 99% in terms of value of the total aquaculture production while mussel production stands for and respectively. Marine fish farming (mainly sea bass and sea bream) holds a dominant position accounting for 97% of the volume and 98% of the value of the fish farmed in. Fresh water species (mainly trout) stands for % and respectively. Supply of sea bass & sea bream EU-8 1 % % 8% % % % 9% Portugal Cyprus source: FAO, FEAP, FGM Supply of sea bass & sea bream Global The farming of marine Mediterranean fish has been the main aquaculture activity in the country for years. The main species being bred are (Sparus aurata) and (Dicentrarchus labrax), accounting for about 98% of sales, while on a much smaller scale about of other Mediterranean species are farmed such as Sharpsnoot seabream (Diplodus puntazzo), Red porgy (Pagrus pagrus), Spanish Seabream (Pagellus erythrinus), Meagre (Argyrosomus Regius), Dentex (Dentex dentex) and others. Since 1981, when the first farms were set up, the industry toped in 1 the Mediterranean fish farming. Today, businesses are operating units all over where most of them are family - owned, small and medium-sized enterprises. There are, however, larger groups that own vertically integrated companies that, in addition to fish farming, produce fry and feed. Institutionally, the sector is represented by two associations, the FGM and PANEMMI. In 1, the industry confirmed once again its exporting orientation and acceptance of its products in the global market. The country s total production showed a slight decrease compared to the previous year reaching 1. while the average prices ranged slightly lower than in 1 due to the fall in the price of sea bream, without affecting the economic results of the industry. A milestone of 1 was the establishment of the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO) representing almost 8% of the volume and value of Greek bass and bream production. HAPO was created to boost the competitiveness of the sector as its main activity is the design and implementation of integrated marketing strategies in target markets. Regarding the effort launched in 1 to simplify and modernize the institutional framework of the sector, in 1, as in 1, little progress was made completing several reforms. Marine fish farming % % Mediterranean fish farming - 1 Food Supply Social Cohesion 1,T of production of global supply million meals annually delivered in over countries companies in the Ionian & Aegean Sea 1, employees Cyprus Portugal Tunisia source: FAO, FEAP, FGM Concerning the international environment, third-country competition is still growing, particularly from, which is constantly increasing its production. As a result, in 1 Greek producers witness the biggest difference in the selling price between Greek and Turkish products, especially in sea bream. The main reason for this development was the political instability in the neighboring country in the second half of 1, which led to a sharp decline in tourism and the domestic consumption. As a result, large quantities of fish were diverted to other markets, exerting strong pressures on the prices. Interestingly, competition with other European countries, especially and is growing since those countries increase gradually their production while also carrying out targeted promotional campaigns. Other Economic Contribution. bn production value. bn exports value Ranks 1st in animal food exports Concluding, 1 was also marked by the entry of foreign investors in the Greek aquaculture industry with the acquisition of ANDROMEDA by the American fund Amera Capital Management, as well as the strong investment interest in other companies in the sector.
4 Annual Report Aquaculture in 17 Spatial distribution of farms and labor. Volume and value of main species produced In total there are 1,97 aquaculture farms, with 8% of them in marine waters ( fish farms and 9 shellfish farms), and in fresh and brackish waters. In the above analysis the hatcheries are not included. Regarding the spatial distribution of fish farms, 77% of them are located in three decentralized Administrations where 8 of the leased sea and 81.% of the production takes place. These are the Decentralized Administrations of: 1. Peloponnese, Western and the Ionian Islands,. Thessaly and Central,. the Aegean In 1, sea bream and sea bass production reached 1, valued at.9 million s, (.% volume decrease and 7% value decrease over the previous year). Specifically the industry produced 9, of seabream and, sea bass, worth 98. mil. and.8 million respectively. corresponds to % of the production volume and sea bass at %. Compared to 1, bream production fell by.8%, while sea bass increased.8%. Main species produced % At regional level, out of the 7 regional units countrywide the industry operates farms in of them. Industry activity is concentrated in 11 units (Evia, Dodecanese, Etoloakarnania, Kefalonia, Fthiotida, Thesprotia, Attica, Argolis, Corinth, Chios and Preveza) with an average of less than 1 licensed farms per unit in the remaining coastal areas. Further growth is expected in 18 as production is expected to reach 117. tones Harvest of sea bream & sea bass % In terms of employment, has one of the highest percentages of total employees in the aquaculture in the EU. The industry employs directly and indirectly about 1, workers and scientific, technical and managerial personnel. Most importantly, these jobs are created in remoted coastal areas contributing significantly to the economic and social development of local communities. Marine aquaculture (fish and mussels) accounts for 8% of employment in the sector, brackish water 8% and inland aquaculture 7%. With regard to marine fish farming, the industry creates jobs in ten out of the thirteen Regions of. /Kg Ε Average annual price development Prices in 1 decreased for sea bream and improved for sea bass compared to 1. 5 Annual Report Aquaculture in Total Meagre Sharpsnout Bream Red Porgy Total Sales of organic sea bass and bream source: Minagric, FGM 1 17Ε In 1, the average price of organic sea bream and sea bass was at 8 / kg. In 17 it is expected that the organic sales will grow marginally by.%. There are two companies certified to produce organic fish in presently and there are three private agencies providing such certification schemes for aquaculture. The certification companies are authorized and supervised by a state agency (Greek Agricultural Organization Dimitra ). Other marine species Other marine species Organic Sea Bream and Organic aquaculture consists of approximately 7 which is.7% of the total harvest. However it should be noted that only of this production was sold as organic fish (.% of the total aquaculture production), while the rest was sold as non-organic. Compared to 1, there is an average decrease of % in sales (8.% for sea bream and.8% for sea bass) due to the withdrawal of one of the production companies involved in organic aquaculture. Organic fish are up to % more expensive than the nonorganic and markets are fragmented with relatively slow growth in demand. Apart from sea bass and sea bream, there are also some other Mediterranean species (often described as new species ) that represent approximately.% of the total production of marine fish farming. In 1, their production reached,8, which is.% more than in 1. Among the new species, meager and bream hold the largest market share. In 17 their production is expected to grow compared to the previous year and exceed,. 1 17Ε Economics of sea bass and sea bream farming The main raw materials used in the production of fish are fish feed (7% - 9%) and juveniles (1% - ). Together they represent a total of 7% of production costs. The remaining % varies according to the size and organization of each company and is divided into labor costs (1), depreciation (%) and other operating expenses (9%). Feed Market Fish feeds are the most important raw materials used in the production process and represent 7% - 9% of the production cost. In, there are eight manufacturers of compound feed, three farming companies that own fish feed manufacturing companies and one feed manufacturing company that owns fish farms. The raw materials used in fish feed are fishmeal and fish oil, cereals, vegetable protein and oilseed products, which are imported to a large degree from South America, northern Europe and Africa. Feed sales in 1 are estimated at, showing.8% decrease compared to 1. Of these, almost 9% of the fish feed sold was manufactured in,.% was imported by fish feed companies and a very small segment of.% was imported directly by the farms (1, ) Feed Sales 1-17E E Anlayse In 1, fish feed sales reached almost.7 million s demonstrating.% decrease. 6 Annual Report Aquaculture in 17 Production of Juveniles 9% 9% Other Production of Juveniles The on-growing activity is supported by several hatcheries with an annual production capacity of - million juveniles. Almost 98% of the juveniles produced for stocking is sea bream and sea bass fry and the remaining is for all other Mediterranean species. In 1, the total production of juveniles for stocking was 7. million pieces, valued at 9. million, which is 8.7% increase in terms of volume and in terms of value compared to 1. and sea bass juveniles production in 1 was 8 million with a value estimated at 91.8 million. Out of these, 7.8 million juveniles (1.%) were exported to other countries (,, Egypt, UAE, Tunisia). Per species: 18 million sea bass juveniles were produced, valued million and production was increased.8% compared to 1, of which 1. million were exported, increase over last year. 8 million sea bream juveniles were produced, valued at.8 million. Compared to 1, there is 9.% increase in production volume and 1 in sales value of which,.8 mil. juveniles were exported, a.9 % decrease over last year. It is estimated that in 1 a small amount of fry from and was imported. In 17, production of sea bream and sea bass juveniles will decrease by.% and reach. million pieces (17. million juveniles of sea bass and million of sea bream, corresponding to 1.9% and.9% decrease respectively over 1). Production of juveniles. Main markets and trade of sea bass and sea bream The Aquaculture industry in is highly export oriented as approximately 78 % of the production is exported while the remaining is sold in the domestic market, the size of which ranges between 1,-,. According to the National Statistics Agency (ELSTAT), in 1 Greek sea bream and sea bass were exported to countries globally. By far the largest market for Greek products is the EU as more than 9% exports are sold there and a small percentage is exported to North America and other countries. The primary markets for the Greek fish are, and as 7% of the Greek production is sold there. Exports in 1 marginally increased although production decreased following the harvest trend. In 1, exports reached 8, (78% of total production) of which 8% was sea bream and sea bass. Main markets of sea bass and sea bream Portugal 8% 7% Germany % 1 Netherlands % 8% Other EU % U. Growth Vision In 1, FGM with the European Aquaculture Technology Research and Innovation Platform (EATiP) developed the growth vision of the industry until. The program foresees an average annual production growth of. and harvest of. million for the EU by. European production is expected to rise to. million of fishery products. Specifically, Mediterranean aquaculture is projected to grow at an average annual growth rate of %, which will provide, of additional production with a value estimated at 1. billion. This will require only, hectares of sea area while producing an estimated 1, new jobs. in particular, is expected to double its production by in order to meet the growing demand and maintain its market position globally. Harvested production is expected to reach nearly,, worth 1. billion s. The export orientation of the industry will be further strengthened (8% - 9%) as exports are expected to exceed, with a value at first sale of more than 1 billion. It is estimated that this will create up to, new jobs in direct employment and many more in related activities. However, given the ongoing restructuring process of the major companies in the industry and the economic situation in the country, the period form 1 1 was marked by a focus on stability and profitability rather than production increases. Therefore, the harvested volumes have been adjusted accordingly and after three years stagnation, it is projected that the Industry will achieve growth in 17.,, 1, 1,, Bibliography, 1.
