5 Educaton Bullhead Cty The earlest known human nhabtants of the Colorado Rver Valley were the Mojave people. The rch sol and plentful water provded the people wth a prosperous farmng lfe. In the 19th Century, the Bullhead Area mnng communty was named Hardyvlle. It was named for Wllam Harrson Hardy, a postmaster, county supervsor and a member of the Terrtoral Legslature. Wllam Hardy was a New York natve, establshed a ferry servce across the rver and rased Angora goats. By 1864, ths entrepreneur had a net worth of over $40,000, makng hm the 2nd rchest man n Arzona at that tme. At the begnnng of the 20th century, mnng began to fal and Hardyvlle became a ghost town. The only thng remanng from Hardyvlle s the cemetery. Wth the constructon of the Davs Dam, Bullhead Hstory Cty was rased from the ashes. Mohave Lake on the Northern border of Bullhead Cty ncreased nterest n ths desert area. The name of Bullhead Cty came from a landmark on the Colorado Rver called Bull s Head Rock whch was used as a navgaton pont for steamboats. The rsng water from the Davs Dam covered ths landmark. The Davs Dam was started n 1942 and completed n The popularty of helped greatly wth the growth n the area. Bullhead Cty was ncorporated on August 28, Ths locaton, consstng of a bar and motel, was establshed n the 1940 s for the constructon workers who bult Davs Dam and for gold and slver mners. After the dam constructon was fnshed, the town was bascally deserted. Don Laughln, a Las Vegas entrepreneur, bought the property n Laughln converted the motel and bar nto the Rversde Resort. He ntally offered 98 cent dnners, slot machnes and two lve gamng tables. Four of the motel s rooms were used for guests and the other four for Mr. Laughln and hs famly. The postal nspector named the town for Mr. Laughln. In 1972, 48 rooms were added and n 1986, a 14-floor hgh-rse was bult. Other casnos were soon to follow and growth also took off n Bullhead Cty. Shuttle boats were used to transport gamblers from Arzona to Laughln. In 1987, Don Laughln had the Laughln Brdge bult and donated at a cost of $3.5 mllon. Today there are many thrvng casnos, stores, shows and resorts, helpng make toursm a prmary employer n the area. Bullhead Cty Elementary School Dstrct The Bullhead Cty Elementary School Dstrct was founded n 1948, wth the buldng of a one room, Lttle Red School House. 10 Wth the unprecedented prosperty of the postwar years, Route 66 became one long neon avenue from Chcago to L.A. Through the years, the hghway has had many names, ncludng: The Man Street of Amerca, The Wre Road, The Wll Rogers Hghway, and the Mother Road to name a few. Songs and televson shows have mmortalzed t and Kngman was at the heart of t all. By the 1950 s, wth the ncrease n traffc came the Natonal Interstate Hghway System. One of the new nterstates was to be I-40, whch would parallel Route 66 n many places, and cover t n others. So ended a way of lfe for many of the communtes along hstorc Route 66. In 1987, the Hstorc Route 66 Assocaton of Arzona was formed promptng nterest n the hstorc hghway, thus ncreasng toursm along the Arzona porton of the old route n communtes such as Wllams, Selgman, Hackberry, Valle Vsta, Topock/Golden Shores and Oatman. Cottonwood Cove Located on the Nevada sde of Lake Mohave, ths s known as a famly resort area. Ths natural desert oass has been enhanced wth beach front lodgng, a restaurant and a small sundres store. One can also rent a houseboat, deck cruser, 3640 AZ-95, Bullhead Cty, AZ (928) Hstorc Route 66 From Chcago to L.A., more than two thousand mles all the way was the boastng lyrcs of the famous song Get Your Kcks on Route 66. Kngman s at the heart of the longest stretch of ths famed hghway stll n exstence and ntact. The foundaton for both the communty of Kngman and the hghway was lad hundreds of years ago. Natve Amercans who lved n the surroundng deserts and mountans, orgnally forged the path that was to become Route 66 as a trade route to the Pacfc. In the md 1800 s, the path became a tral (under the gudance of a mltary surveyor) that would eventually carry a naton westward. The Natonal Old Trals Hghway was the result and wth contnued mprovement, t was renamed Route 66 n go swmmng n the lake, or playng on the beach. They also offer a Natonal Park Servce campground and RV campng area. Grapevne Canyon Prehstorc Indans who lved n ths canyon, located near Chrstmas Tree Pass, are easly traced through the many petroglyphs (rock art drawngs) decoratng the canyon walls. The canyon was later named for the grape plants found n the area. Ancent ancestors of the Mojave people known as the Amacava bult rock shelters here as early as 1100 AD. Southern Paute people have also been known to camp n ths canyon. Take State Hghway 163 about sx mles west of Davs Dam. At mle marker 13 turn rght onto a drt road. Two mles up the road s a small parkng area and the tral head. A short, but rather steep hke from the parkng lot s requred to reach the petroglyphs. Katherne Mne Mnng actvty began n the Katherne-Unon Pass area n the md-1860s wth the dscovery of gold. The road used to haul ore to the mll passed by a soltary grante knob that protruded from a flat gravel plan. A fellow by the name of S.C. Baggs, who was haulng ore to the mll, panned some samples from the outcroppng. In September 1900, the outcrop was clamed by Baggs and became the Katherne Mne. Katherne was a boom town that ganed more from ts reputaton than from the ore that t produced. The Katherne Mne now les dead and decayng. All that stands s an odd assortment of concrete pllars, arranged as f n some forgotten graveyard pattern and the foundaton of the once mpressve structure. Scattered about are the rustng remans of ron tanks and other equpment used earler n the mnng operaton. Deep beneath the surface, a labyrnth of passages s choked wth water, rotten tmbers and the memores of long departed mners. Oatman In 1915, two mners struck a $10 mllon gold fnd and wthn a year, the town s populaton grew to more than 3,500 and up to 10,000 at ts peak. Oatman was named for Olve Oatman, who was kdnapped as a young grl by Mojave Indans and later rescued n 1857 near the current ste of the town. In 1921, a fre burned down many of the smaller shacks n town and three years later, the man mnng company. Oatman later survved by caterng to travelers on Route 66. In the 1960 s, after Interstate 40 was bult, the town of Oatman almost ded. Today Oatman s an authentc old western town wth wld burros roamng the streets and gunfghts typcally staged on weekends. The burros are descendants of those that the mners turned loose when the mne closed. There are many orgnal buldngs stll n use today. The Oatman Hotel was once used as a honeymoon locaton for Clark Gable and Carol Lombard n Ther honeymoon sute s stll one of the major attractons n town. Gable returned here often to play poker wth the local mners. The town has been used as a locaton for several moves such as: How The West Was Won, Foxfre and Edge of Eternty. (928) Sprt Mountan Ths s the sacred grounds of the Yuman Indan people (Mojave, Hualapa, Yavapa, Havasupa, Quechan, Pa pa and Marcopa trbes). The hghest peak n the Newberry Mountan range at about 5,639 feet, Sprt Mountan, has played a promnent role n the relgous and mythologcal belefs of these people. It s beleved to be the sprtual brthplace of the trbes. These Natve Amercans contnue to use ths area n ther trbal ceremones and cultural tradtons. Named as a Tradtonal Cultural Property, t s also lsted on the Natonal Regster of Hstorcal Places. Telephone Cove Two secluded beaches located along a stretch of the Colorado Rver. Follow the paths away from the bg beach to fnd cozy lttle prvate coves and nlets. An deal spot for campng. Located 5 mles from Laughln just north of Katherne Landng. The Mojave Desert The transton from the hot Sonoran Desert to the cooler and hgher Great Basn s called the Mojave Desert. Ths ard regon of Southeastern Calforna and portons of Nevada, Arzona and Utah, occupes more than 15,000 square mles. The Mojave desert conssts of mountanand-basn topography (typcal of Kngman terran). Sand and gravel basns dran to central salt flats from whch borax, potash and salt are extracted. Slver, tungsten, gold and ron are mned n the Mojave. Ths desert s clmate s characterzed by a wde varaton n daly temperatures and an annual precptaton of less than 5 nches (average). Nearly all of the mosture normally arrves n wnter. Freezng can occur n wnter, whle summers are hot, dry and sometmes wndy. Although the desert clmate can be harsh, t s softened by the beauty of vegetaton as sprng brngs a magnfcent dsplay of colors from cactus n varous shades to wldflowers to the unusual Joshua Tree blossoms. Wllow Beach Harbor Nestled along the banks of the Colorado Rver n Black Canyon between Lake Mead and Lake Mohave about 90 mles north of Bullhead Cty and about 4 mles west of AZ State Route 93, ths lttle beach area s secluded and normally quet. 11 Upcomng Events Colorado Rver Hardyvlle Cemetery Establshed n 1865 Hardyvlle was one of the many Colorado rver towns that ferred people across the rver and served as a freght depot. At the most, Hardyvlle had about 20 permanent resdents. Wllam Harrson Hardy, for whom the town s named, s credted wth the nventon of the rveted mal sack. It was the ralroad crossng at Needles that doomed the town. It eventually developed nto Bullhead Cty. Its cemetery s the only thng remanng. It overlooks Hghway 95 on a hgh hll wth about 15 graves whch are unfortunately unmarked. The graves are crcled wth stones. The cemetery s regstered as a Natonal Hstorcal Landmark. Two of the wooden grave markers are now n the Colorado Rver Museum. Lake Havasu Cty Lake Havasu s about forty-fve mles long wth four hundred ffty mles of scenc shorelne, makng t the perfect place for every type of water recreaton magnable. Some of the most beautful scenery n Arzona can be found here. The mountans across the lake n Calforna make for a beautful backdrop. Lake Havasu Cty s a relatvely young cty. In 1963 Robert McCulloch Sr. decded to start a retrement communty n ths lovely desert oass. What better combnaton could you want than over 300 days of sunshne and a water wonderland? McCulloch used hs formdable sklls n marketng and the growth was on. In 1968, when McCulloch heard the world famous London Brdge was up for aucton, he decded t would be a terrfc draw to hs desert communty. He placed the wnnng bd and transported the brdge across the Atlantc, through the Panama Canal nto Arzona. He then had the brdge rebult brck by brck on Lake Havasu. Next to the Grand Canyon t s Arzona s second largest tourst attracton today. Incorporaton as a cty came n The Davs Dam and Powerplant The Davs Dam and Powerplant faclty was constructed by the Bureau of Reclamaton n Pyramd Canyon approxmately 2 mles upstream from Bullhead Cty. Davs Dam s an earth and rock-fll embankment wth a concrete spllway, gravty structure, ntake structure and powerplant. The prmary purpose of Davs Dam s to re-regulate Hoover Dam releases to meet downstream needs. Lake Mohave also provdes recreaton and habtat for fsh and wldlfe. Addtonally the lake captures and regulates the dscharge of flash floods from sde washes downstream of Hoover Dam.
