1 Sea Street The sandy pennsula of Cape Cod, reachng nto the Atlantc Ocean, was ntally created by glacers durng the ce age more than 23,000 years ago. The Cape Cod Pearl Boardman & Polando wth ther plane called Cape Cod. Cape Cod pearls were nvented about 85 years ago by a resourceful and mysterous chemst, Edward I. Petow, a Russan mmgrant born n Odessa n Usng fsh scales from local herrng and a process nspred by the pearl ndustry n France, Petow perfected hs formula. In 1917, he refurbshed the Hyanns Yacht Club on Pleasant Street for hs factory. The new venture was called Cape Cod Unted Products Co. The Cape Cod pearl was an nstant ht, wth product sellng nternatonally as far as Inda. Style changes & nexpensve optons eventually caused the factory to close. But many stll chersh ther pearls as an herloom & memento of Cape Cod. Hyanns Arport Polando & Boardman In 1928 Robertson Aylng bought & cleared the Waggoner Farm to buld a runway. On June 17, 1928, the frst plane landed n Hyanns. The arport quckly became a communty gatherng spot for watchng ar shows. It ultmately became the gateway for many, ncludng John F. Kennedy and hs plane called Carolne, durng hs presdental campagn. Boardman-Polando Feld s named after two avators, Russell N. Boardman & John L. Polando, who, n 1931, set a new non-stop dstance world record for transatlantc flght. They consdered the Hyanns arport ther home base, even namng ther plane, Cape Cod. They traned here for ther record-breakng flght, startng n the summer of Fortes Beach Eugena Fortesv hstorymakers.org Cvl rghts actvst Eugena Fortes ( ) was born n Cova Joana Brava, Cape Verde Islands. At nne years old she mmgrated to New Bedford, MA, later movng to Hyanns to work at the pearl company. An outspoken actvst for the poor & for racal equalty, Fortes founded the Cape Cod chapter of the NAACP n In 1945, when asked to leave the beach at the end of Sea Street, she refused, and later advocated for t to reman publc and unsegregated. In 2004, the beach was renamed Fortes Beach n her honor. C The Mayflower Block The block contanng the Federated Church s known as the Mayflower Block, for the famous Mayflower Restaurant, at 334 Man Street. The Mayflower flourshed there from 1932 to One wrter called t the sgnature stop for dners n Hyanns. It was owned by CW Megathln, the frst presdent of the Chamber of Commerce. From the Barnstable Patrot, 1905 C. W. Megathln s new drug store was opened on Thursday and was lghted for the frst tme on Thursday evenng. Snce then Mr. Megathln has been the busest of men,... acknowledgng congratulatons for hs store, the newest and best ths sde of Boston... It has a very fne large soda fountan...bult by the Puffer Co. of Boston especally for Mr. Megathln. Ths handsome marble structure n soda fountans... attracts already crowds of vstors. Why Pneapples? Sea captans travellng the world would brng pneapples home as a source of vtamn C. They would put a real pneapple outsde ther homes, on fence posts, to show t was avalable nsde to the people of the town. Hence, t has become a symbol of hosptalty. Reverend Sarah Dxon The Reverend Dr. Sarah Dxon ( ) was the frst mnster of the Federated Church, and one of the frst women pastors on Cape Cod - along wth Reverend Anna Howard Shaw ( ) n Denns. The current buldng, bult n 1958, s the 5th on the ste snce the frst meetnghouse was bult n One was destroyed n the Fre of The congregaton s ncknamed The Frendly Church wth the tradtonal glded pneapple over the man door. Man Street 1950s The Fre of 1904 On December 2, 1904, a devastatng fre began n the east end of town near Center Street, across from the ralroad depot. The sound of church bells rngng & tran whstles blowng alerted the resdents of Hyanns. An east wnd blew the fre down Man Street through the wooden structures to Barnstable Road. More than 15 buldngs were destroyed, ncludng the telephone exchange, post offce and Frst Unversalst Church (later rebult as Federated Church, now at 320 Man St.). 3 Hyanns Harbor WELCOME TO THE WORKING WATERFRONT Hyanns Harbor, bustlng wth all the actvtes of a workng harbor. In the second largest commercal fshng port on Cape Cod, vstors can watch local fshng fleets off load ther cargo & enjoy recreatonal boatng. A schooner s a salng shp wth two or more masts. the Englsh farmers who settled n Hyanns n 1639, took to fshng for a lvelhood. Durng the 19th century, wnd-powered vessels domnated the commerce of the seas. By 1840 more than 150 sea captans had made ther home near the vllage s sheltered harbor. The age of sal lasted untl the advent of steamshps & the ralroad n Untl 1872 the Old Colony Ralroad s tracks extended to a stone wharf where passengers could debark to catch the boat to Nantucket. Wampanoag Trbe The Wampanoag Indans, members of the Algonquan Naton, were among the frst settlers n the area. They were here for thousands of years before the European nflux to North Amerca n the 1600s. The Cape offered a plentful sea harvest & temperate clmate to ts natve nhabtants. Iyannough was leader of the Mattakeese trbe of Cummaqud, a sub-group of the Wampanoag. The vllage of Hyanns and the Wanno secton of Ostervlle are named after Iyannough. From nshore fsh and deep sea fsh, to lobsters and bottom fsh, you ll fnd endless speces lvng n the Atlantc Ocean waters off Cape Cod. Inshore you wll fnd fluke, pollock, sea bass, and scup, whle deep sea charters wll see cod, halbut, bluefn & yellow fn tuna. The frst boats n and out of the harbor were buld of wood, from canoes to ketches to catboats. In 2004 a buldng overlookng Hyanns Harbor opened as the Cape Cod Martme Museum, focusng on the hstory of these early boatng tradtons. A replca of the 1886 Herbert Crosby catboat, the Sarah, was bult n the museum s boat shop and s moored n the Hyanns Harbor. HYANNIS HARBOR s protected by a breakwater whch dvdes the harbor nto Lews Bay, to the north, and the outer harbor. The Hyanns Harbor Lght, bult n 1849 & decommssoned n 1929, can be seen from the outer harbor, outsde Lews Bay. And when we go back to the sea, whether s t to sal or to watch t, we are gong back from whence we came. Presdent Kennedy, September 1962 Presdent Kennedy loved returnng to Hyanns Port. Lookng for rejuvenaton, he enjoyed salng hs Wanno Senor, Vctura, gfted to hm by hs father when he was ffteen years old, wherever the day s breeze would take hm: Hyanns Harbor, Lews Bay, and Nantucket Sound. In 1992, the John F. Kennedy Hyanns Museum was founded, attractng vstors of all ages desrng to connect wth the Presdent and hs famly. The museum serves as ambassador to the legacy of Presdent Kennedy, nsprng people of dverse cultures, and preservng the conc connecton wth Presdent Kennedy. Travel back n tme, experence the Kennedy famly through the museum s exhbts and artfacts. It s a place to relax, play & hosts a varety of entertanment year round. The bandstand was contrbuted by the Hyanns Rotary Club n The Walkway to the Sea, marked by the red brck & grante path, wnds through the Vllage Green & the Overlook artst shantes to Hyanns Harbor. Crossng South Street, to the rght ( west), s the Hyanns Armory (225 South St.). Bult n 1958, t s where Presdent-elect John F. Kennedy presented hs vctory speech on Nov. 9, 1960, on the mornng after hs electon. It s on the Natonal Regstry of Hstorc Places. The lbrary was founded n 1865 by a group of 14 women, led by Rosella Ford Baxter. She became ts frst presdent. From 1909 untl 1943, Ora Adams Hnckley was the lbraran. Barnstable Town Hall 367 Man Street s a Romanesque Revval-style buldng, desgned by Boston archtects Hartwell, Rchardson and Drver. Intally t was the ste of the three-buldng campus of the Hyanns Normal School, bult n 1897 to tran elementary school teachers. The Old Town Hall, presently the locaton of the Kennedy Museum, s a neo-federal two-story brck buldng, wth a fve-bay man block flanked by symmetrcal sngle-story wngs. Its entry s dstngushed by a semcrcular portco supported by Cornthan columns. Coleman ( ) who created more than 100 murals for FDR s WPA program n the 1930s. Rumor has t that the shp changes course as the vewer moves poston. The lbrary buldng at 401 Man Street was a former Hallett famly resdence, bult c It s a full-cape structure over 250 years old. It was purchased n 1908 for use as a lbrary, and, wth two addtons n 1939 & 1974, s stll an mportant part of the lbrary today.

5 Hgh School Road Hyanns holds a specal spot n the hearts of resdents & vstors, who love to lve, work & play n CAPE COD S DOWNTOWN year round. The carousel at 541 Man Street was bult n 1957 by the Allen Herschell company, one of the prmary carousel makers n the U.S. It was moved to ts present spot n Many fondly remember Lorana s Toys and Books, whch was located n the arcade buldng. It was a popular stop for JFK & hs famly when vacatonng on the Cape. Born n Hyanns Paul J. Pena ( ) was a Robert Brdge Rchardson, ASC Amercan snger, songwrter (1955) s an Amercan cnematoand gutarst who wrote the song grapher. He has won the Academy Jet Arlner n Award for Best Cnematography John Henry Alvn ( ) was an three tmes, for hs work on JFK, Amercan cnematc artst & panter. The Avator and Hugo. The buldng was once known as the Saturday Nght Club, where men from the Hyanns Board of Trade went to talk shop. The Crowell/Guyer Barn, 250 South Street, s a 1-1/2 Cape wood frame structure wth a front-gable roof that has decoratve brackets under the eaves. It was bult c and ts earlest documented owner was Captan Sdney Crowell, a shp master actve n the coastng trade. It s now the center of the HyArts campus wth galleres & shows planned all season. Cemeteres & Bural Grounds Wthn the Man Street area of Hyanns there are 4 hstorc bural grounds. Please respect the sanctty of these spaces. Ancent Unversalst 509 South Street between Man and Elm Streets, dates to 1737 behnd the Federated Church Old Frst Baptst Church dates to 1826 Oak Grove Man Street & Hgh School Road dates to 1828 dates to 1802 Captan Allen Hallett House, 27 Pleasant Street, was bult before It s the oldest resdence n Hyanns stll on ts orgnal foundaton and n ts orgnal locaton. Captan Asa Bearse House, 419 Man Street, bult 1840 and purchased n 1879 by local doctor Samuel Ptcher for hs home. Ptcher was famous for nventng a medcne called castora, a compound used as a substtute for castor ol. After hs death n 1907 the house was purchased and became the Beechwood Inn. Captan Wllam Hallett ( ) House, 568 Man Street, s a full Cape cottage rsng from a low grante foundaton to a gable roof wth a center chmney. Some Queen Anne remodellngs nclude a bay wndow on the west facade & a full shed dormer wth an eyebrow curve over the central wndows. Captan Hallett was a master of deep water schooners. Captan Charles Harrs, M.D. Dr. Charles E. Harrs Dr. Harrs ( ) came to Hyanns to start hs medcal practce n He played an actve role n establshng Cape Cod Hosptal. Years before the new hosptal was bult, he would host crcus fund-rasers n hs back yard where local resdents dressed up as anmals and clowns to entertan the guests. Sports The Hyanns Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League play at McKeon Park from md-june to early August. Hyanns s home to the Cape Cod Seadogs, a sem-pro football team whch plays ts home games at Barnstable Hgh School.

6 The Arts n Hyanns Artsts have always been nspred by the beauty of Cape Cod & the charm of downtown. Guyer Barn, HyArts Campus & HyArts Artst Shantes The hstorc Guyer Barn (1865) anchors the HyArts Campus as a communty art space. The Campus also features a gallery & artst work studos. Steps away, along Ocean Street, the HyArts Artst Shantes, nspred by the fshng shantes orgnally located by the harbor, feature Cape Cod artsts who work and sell ther wares n ther seasde studos. Idlehour Theater, 1913 (razed 1970) The capton of the Barnstable Patrot photo reads On a busy afternoon n the Hyanns of pre-war years, one could often see as many as three automobles at one tme. Note the matnee throng n front of the old Idlehour Theater. The Cape Cod Musc Crcus, orgnally located on North Streeet and now the Cape Cod Melody Tent, began presentng muscal shows n The WPA Arts Program Zon Unon Hertage Museum Artwork on Man Street completed under FDR s WPA Program nclude: Vernon Coleman, panter 1. ol mural, of the shp Red Jacket, Barnstable Town Hall, 367 Man Street 2. wrap-around mural hgh on the wall, 474 Man Street 3. half round murals on wall, representng scenes of Cape Cod, 334 Man Street 4. The buldng was orgnally the home of the frst nterracal non-denomnatonal church located n Hyanns. The museum has 10 artsts-n-resdence who create unque works of art that reflect perspectves of people of color on Cape Cod. Benjamn Hawkns, sculptor 1. a bas relef sculpture ttled Cape Cod Fshermen, hangs nsde the front door at Hyanns Post Offce, 385 Man Street Lou Colombo Trumpet player & jazz gant Lou Colombo ( ) made hs home n Hyanns. He traveled the world wth Benny Goodman, Dzzy Gllespe & Tony Bennett, and was often seen playng n Hyanns, sometmes accompaned by other jazz greats, ncludng panst Dave McKenna ( ) I Have a Dream, Pamela Chatterton-Purdy Coltrane, Sean Cassdy Courtesy of Zon Unon Hertage Museum who moved to Cape Cod n Cape Cod Art Assocaton The Cape Cod Art Assocaton, founded n 1948 and stll actve as the Cape Cod Art Center (Route 6A, Barnstable), was orgnally located n Hyanns. Assocaton foundng members ncluded artsts Hans Hensche, Courtesy of the Cape Cod Art Center Wllam Lttlefeld, Vernon Coleman & Vernon Smth, who served as supervsor on Cape Cod for FDR s 1930s-era WPA Federal Art Project. Renowned artst Ralph Cahoon, from Cotut, opened one of hs frst solo shows on Ocean Street. The Assocaton was an art hub and a lnk wth the Provncetown art scene durng a post-war art perod of great change.

7 Man Street In the 1800s more than 150 Sea Captans called Hyanns home. Tree lned streets, such as Pleasant Street, or Sea Captans Row, lnks Man Street to the Harbor. The Old Colony Ralroad orgnally extended to a wharf n the Outer Harbor along what s now Old Colony Road. Salng the Seven Seas 35 Pleasant Street Greek Revval Archtectural Detals Capt. Allen Crowell ( ), whose home was bult at 35 Pleasant Street n 1852, s famous for havng saled the SEVEN SEAS. Hs home remans a fne example of the Greek Revval archtectural tradton popular n that era and found throughout the hstorc neghborhood of Pleasant & School streets. Crowell began hs career on the sea at the age of 10. In 1847, wth Captan Alan Baxter, he saled on the Cabot & the Amercan Belle, brngng gran to a famshed Ireland. On hs return, Baxter set the record of that era for an Atlantc Ocean crossng. Presdent Grant & the Rver Queen Old Colony Ralroad In the summer of 1854, the ralroad tracks for the Old Colony Ralroad were extended a mle and a half from Man Street to South Hyanns shore, to a stone wharf where the steamer Nebraska could take the ral passengers to Nantucket. The ral ran untl Old Colony Road marks the path of these orgnal tracks. In 1874 Presdent Ulysses S. Grant arrved n Hyanns on the Rver Queen to naugurate the extenson of the Old Colony Ralroad from Hyanns to Provncetown. Wth fanfare, he addressed crowds at the corner of Pleasant and Man streets, as well as at each stop on hs way to Provncetown. The Rver Queen was the floatng headquarters for General Grant, Presdent Lncoln and General Sherman durng the Cvl War. It was later operated by the Nantucket and Cape Cod Steamboat Co. n New Bedford, Martha s Vneyard and Nantucket. Can you name the Seven Seas?
