1 NGCOA CHAPTER NEWS NGCOA CHAPTER NEWS ATLANTIC CANADA David McCafferty (506) The Atlantic Canada membership currently stands at 104 members with our provincial breakdown as follows: New Brunswick 26 Nova Scotia 39 Prince Edward Island 26 Newfoundland 13 Golfmax Demo Day & Meeting Our chapter Demo Day and meeting was held on March 31st, 2003 at the Holiday Inn Select in Halifax, NS. Despite the very wet weather, a good turnout of approximately 50 members took in the morning meeting featuring a chapter update and a national report by our Executive Director, Jeff Calderwood. Take-a-Kid to the Course week, compensation survey, oncourse drinking water and our national conference scheduled for November in Ottawa were discussed. Following the meeting were three breakout sessions on food and beverage, pro shop and irrigation provided by our Golfmax suppliers. The day ended with lunch and the Demo Day with a good number of our Golfmax Suppliers on hand to take part. SPECIAL EVENTS Halifax Golf & Travel Show The inaugural Halifax Golf & Travel Show owned and managed by the Atlantic Chapter of the NGCOA was held March 28th 30th at Exhibition Park. This show, which promises to become a major event on the Atlantic Canada golf calendar in years to come, attracted in excess of forty exhibitors. Special events included the Halifax Amateur Long Drive Championship, sponsored by ReMax/Nova and hosted by World Long Drive Finalist Carson Way, the Myrtle Beach Putting Contest, sponsored by Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort and staffed by volunteers from the Nova Scotia Lung Association, and the indoor driving range and golf clinics by CPGA professionals. The Long Drive championship saw in excess of $650 raised for the IWK Children s Hospital Fund and the Putting Contest saw over $1,400 raised for the Lung Association. Planning for the 2004 show, which will take place from March 26th 28th again at Exhibition Park, has already begun and promises to be even bigger and better. QUEBEC Justine Freund (450) jfreund@golfmax.ca The Province of Quebec now has 67 members and continues to grow. As a developing chapter, the growth has been quite impressive. The chapter held its first Golfmax Demo Day at the Club de Golf les Quatre Domaines on Thursday, March 12. The day began with a welcome and chapter overview by Gilles Debut, Chapter President, followed by an update from the national office. Owners and operators had a chance to network with several of the Golfmax suppliers in attendance at the mini-trade show. Many thanks are extended to Gilles Debut and his staff for providing great service and a wonderful lunch. REGIONAL DIRECTOR As Claude Quinn hits the links and moves to the Gaspé region for his retirement, the NGCOA Canada is pleased to announce that Justine Freund will be joining the team as the Quebec Chapter. Justine s experience working in the Quebec region and her knowledge of the needs of owners and operators of golf courses within the province will enable her to continue to add value for current members and encourage the continued growth of the chapter. The entire team at the NGCOA Canada wishes Claude a happy and healthy retirement. From the onset, Claude was an asset to both the Quebec Chapter and the national team, bringing enthusiasm, experience, hard work and a sense of fun to his efforts and has served the Quebec NGCOA members well. Thank you! ALL ONTARIO NEWS Pesticides Caledon has passed a restrictive pesticide bylaw. Golf courses are exempt, with a requirement to have IPM Accreditation by January 1, 2005 and have completed 2 modules of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (Environmental Plan and Pesticide modules). The Town of Perth has passed a bylaw restricting the use of pesticides. Golf facilities are exempt with a list of conditions which include the mandatory use of IPM and full Audubon certification or equivalent. There is only one course that is partially located in the town limits. The City of Toronto is to vote May 21st on a restriction of pesticide use by anyone, including golf courses. There are some exemptions for applications, including an infestation of property, which is not defined, and for health hazards. The Toronto vote is seen as crucial to influence the direction of the 446 other municipalities in Ontario. Property Tax The hearing to present appeals of assessments for the 2001 tax year is going ahead. After several postponements at the Assessment Review Board, while we "negotiated" with MPAC, statement of issues is scheduled for December 1, We continue our lobby efforts at the Ministry of Finance, and while we receive a sympathetic ear, we still await their efforts to mitigate the impact of increased assessments. Many thanks to those who have contributed to our fund to challenge this change in assessments. We are only half-way to our goal and would appreciate contributions at any time. This is going to be a long and expensive process. Examine your final municipal tax bill expected in June and let us know how it has affected you. There have been instances where MPAC has removed income from driving ranges and other ancillary revenue activities from the income stream. Call your local MPAC office to go through the reconsideration process. A ninehole par-three facility was reverted to the cost method and old assessment, when it was determined that 4 of the 5 income sources were nongolf related mini putt, lessons, driving range and dairy bar. EASTERN ONTARIO/OUTAOUAIS Steve Meabry (613) stevem@golfmax.ca To date the membership of the Eastern Ontario/Outaouais Chapter has climbed to an impressive 141 members. 2 N G C O A C H A P T E R N E WS Golfmax Demo Days Attendance for our annual Demo Day was thwarted by a snowstorm, allowing only half of the expected registrants to struggle through. The day was well received by all and we are very appreciative of Copper Creek for hosting the event. Summer 2003 GOLF BUSINESS CANADA Spring Golf Day A sunny day, balmy temperatures, and the friendly professionals at Westminster Trails in London welcomed our members and guests to our Annual Spring Golf Day on Tuesday, April 29. Scrambled Scorecards determined the Low Net winning team of Matt Carre (Puslinch Lake Golf Club), Jeff Calderwood (NGCOA Canada), John Wilton (Westminster Trails Golf Club), and Ryan Schramn (Puslinch Lake Golf Club). High Gross prizes were awarded (amongst a plethora of excuses) to Randy Dick (Innerkip Highlands), Pat Schmitz (Brookfield Golf & Country Club), Kate Johnson (Gentleman s Creek Golf Club), and Manny Mocci (Mt. Elgin Golf & Country Club). A warm Thank You to our hosts Lloyd and Shirley, and also to Darren and Heather, for providing a wonderful venue, day of golf, and dinner. GOLF BUSINESS CANADA C H A P T E R I N I T I AT I V E S GolfLinks 2003 Limited Edition Fire-Sale is the promotional slogan that has resulted in high demand and quick sale of the remaining 2003 GolfLinks Coupon Books. Almost 1,500 of our coupon books were destroyed in a fire at our central warehouse location (fortunately no one was injured). Options to re-print were hampered by cost, timing and insurance settlements. Golfmax Inc. has established Net$ave, an online coupon book available though Golfmax.ca, the NGCOA s consumer website. Complementing GolfLinks, Net$ave is an easy-to-maintain coupon directory enabling members to issue coupons anytime throughout the season. Rick Giroux, the newly appointed Sales and Marketing Manager for Golfmax Inc., has been contacting all of our members to invite them to participate in this member benefit program. There is no charge to participate in this service and proceeds go directly to NGCOA chapter funding initiatives. Your coupons can also be complemented by our highly effective broadcast and promotion pages, available through your Golfmax on-line account. For further information please contact our chapter office or Rick at rick@golfmax.ca. GolfLinks 2004 As we prepare our GolfLinks 2004 Coupon book, we invite you to join us in some new initiatives. GolfLinks 2004 has developed a Charity Fundraising Program to increase sales and strengthen community partnerships. We will be forwarding information and details shortly to a number of charity organizations. For any of our members that have an association or affiliation with any charities suitable and interested in participating in this co-op fundraising initiative, please contact the chapter office to ensure they are included on our initial contact list. Given the value, high caliber and fast growing reputation of our publication, many of our participating courses have chosen to support both our Chapter and the NGCOA by advertising exclusively in our coupon book. We are developing a new benefit program for our member courses that choose to advertise exclusively in this chapter fundraising initiative. After all, exclusive advertisers = high demand for GolfLinks = higher profit revenue to support Southwestern Ontario Chapter initiatives. Details will be available shortly. In the meantime, if you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact Katherine at knelson@golfmax.ca or Municipal Golf The finalization of a Level Playing Field approach and Fair Practice Accounting Summer 2003 Procedure for municipal golf product to meet market rates will allow the NGCOA to continue communications with other municipalities this summer. Our Municipal Golf Course Committee has diligently addressed this initiative to ensure the best interests of all parties are taken into consideration and we would like to thank the City of Kitchener in their commitment to the NGCOA to work with us as we address other municipalities. West Nile Virus Southwestern Ontario seems to be Canada s entrance for the spread of West Nile Virus. The NGCOA Canada and Regional Health Units have provided information on their websites, and the issue of West Nile Virus has taken a lead in conversations. How do you as a golf course owner/operator prepare and protect yourselves, employees and golfers as much as possible? Please check out the article in this issue of Golf Business Canada for some ideas and suggestions. Please refer to the All Ontario News Section for information and up-dates on Property Assessments and Pesticides, and our editorial article addressing On-Course Drinking Water and West Nile Virus. MANITOBA, SASKATCHEWAN, ALBERTA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA Glen Bosecke (780) glen@golfmax.ca M A N I TO BA The Manitoba chapter now has 35 members and is moving to encourage new membership outside the Winnipeg Metro Area. Golfmax Demo Day April 3 was the perfect date to host our 2nd annual Golfmax Demo Day. The meeting, held at the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, drew an attendance of over 50 golf course owners/operators and their staff! The host club treated us to a great meeting environment and some excellent food at our trade show luncheon. Our new president, Bonnie Dalman, chaired the meeting beginning with an overview on chapter initiatives. Maureen Kennedy, Manitoba Women s Entrepreneur of the Year, shared with us some customer service insights in a special presentation, and updates from the national office by Jeff Calderwood, NGCOA Executive 53

3 NGCOA CHAPTER NEWS NGCOA CHAPTER NEWS Director and Nathalie Lavallée, NGCOA Director of Communications and, followed. The 2003 Golf Business Canada Conference & Trade Show, the new NGCOA Compensation Survey and the launch of Take-A-Kid-To-The- Course-Week, were some of the items discussed. Three smaller workshops focusing on the various operational departments of the golf course took place, followed by the mini-trade show and lunch. Golfmax suppliers were on hand to discuss the coming season with attendees to illustrate how they could help improve the golf course s bottom line. Réal Curé was presented with an award in appreciation for his service to the Manitoba Chapter highlighting his efforts to establish and grow the chapter. The award was presented by Glen Bosecke, the chapter s regional director and the current chapter president, Bonnie Dalman. Advisory Board Meeting The MB Advisory Board met prior to the Demo Day meeting and below are several highlights of the meeting: Calendar sales will continue through to the Father s Day weekend in June. Daniel Curé is the key local contact for clubs wishing to sell calendars through their golf shops this spring. The Manitoba board is planning a regional chapter meeting in Brandon the week of May 12 to promote membership growth in the Brandon area. This is the first of several meetings to be held throughout the province on a regular basis. All members and non-members are encouraged to attend the meetings to network with the owners/operators in their regions. Several board members will be assuming committee responsibilities to ensure good communications with the regional director (portfolios to be announced when established). Réal Curé will be focusing on pesticide issues as they arise in Manitoba. The board is encouraging participation of its courses in the Take-A-Kid-To-The-Course- Week, and will explore the possibility of promoting the game through local schools also. SASKATCHEWAN The NGCOA Saskatchewan Chapter Advisory Board is proud to announce that as a new chapter, the membership count has already reached 19 and continues to climb. A very successful regional chapter day was held at the Willows Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon on May 15th. All Members and nonmembers golf courses were invited to attend this event. The day began with a general meeting, including lunch, followed by a round of golf and an evening BBQ. The taxation evaluation by the SMHA continues to be under review throughout the province. The Weyburn Golf Course received encouraging news when the Appeals Board ruled that the golf course is eligible for a 50% abnormal economic obsolescence due the fact that golf course operations are seasonal in nature and are not opened during the winter months. This applied to course improvements with a ruling that golf course development costs should be reduced by 50% due to the fact that many developmental areas are unusable during winter months. Also included in this ruling - the golf course irrigation system is closed and tee and greens are unused when covered by snow effectively for five to six months of the year. The ruling effectively reduced the taxation portion owing on this development evaluation by 50%. The successful appeal of Weyburn sets a positive precedent for future taxation appeals on Saskatchewan golf courses. The ruling is currently under appeal by SMHA. Our Advisory Board member from Good Spirit Lake, John Neufeld, is currently monitoring this situation. Other Our regional director, Glen Bosecke, and Nathalie Lavallee, NGCOA Canada Director of and Communications, attended the Saskatchewan Regional Parks Association convention in Saskatoon and met with the board members and several golf courses. With over 70 golf courses that could benefit from our Golfmax Purchasing Program, we believe that partnership between these two associations could prove beneficial to the golf courses and their operations. V ALBERTA The current chapter membership now stands at 135 with an increase of 16 new members since the same time last year. Golfmax Demo Days The Alberta Chapter Golfmax Demo Day was held at the HeatherGlen Golf & Country Club on March 24. An educational presentation by Dr. Judy MacDonald of the Calgary Health Region with regards to West Nile Virus started our meeting. Dr. MacDonald outlined the status of the virus, how it s transmitted and what steps golf courses can take to help protect their staff and golfers from the potential of contracting the virus. Dr. MacDonald s PowerPoint presentation has been posted to the NGCOA library found on the Members Only section of With over 70 members and staff in attendance, the day was a great success. Our thanks go to the staff of HeatherGlen and our Golfmax Suppliers for putting on a great tradeshow and lunch. Golfmax Invitational Golf Tournament The chapter will hold two separate tournaments this year one in the north and one in the south. The northern tournament will be held at The Ranch Golf Course in Spruce Grove on August 11 and the Southern event will be held at the Springbanks Links on August 14. We anticipate overall attendance to be higher, as less travel by members will be required. However, members are welcome to attend either or both tournaments regardless of location. We look forward to seeing our members at these events. Please encourage a neighbouring golf course to attend and support membership growth. Northern Region Chapter meeting The northern region hosted a chapter meeting at The Dunes Golf & Country Club on May 26. This marks the first northern meeting. Golf, Lunch and meeting were all wrapped into an exciting day. Deal Struck with Mobilcom The Alberta Chapter is please to announce that an agreement with Mobilcom is in place to supply hardware telecommunication systems to our members with a great convenience package, including a longer warranty, repairs and replacement teles. Mobilcom is a Telus dealer and supplies cell s, Mic radio/cell s and other telecommunications equipment to the industry. Natural Gas Deal for NGCOA Alberta members The chapter is looking to conclude its natural gas deal with EPCOR this spring when the price for natural gas stabilizes. This will involve approx 30 golf courses. The Chapter is also looking at extending the electrical and gas packages to all new member clubs and those that missed the opportunity to join last year. If your golf course would like to be part of this electrical and gas group, please contact Glen Bosecke at the chapter office. Allied Golf Industry News Pesticide education meetings are ongoing for golf course staff. The Alberta Golf Industry Association is working on producing brochures to inform the public golfer that pesticide use on golf courses is moderate and only applied under strict guidelines. The AGIA is encouraging the Alberta Golf Superintendents Association to look at implementing an IPM program for their members. The AGIA is also looking at educational sessions regarding West Nile Virus. The AGIA will highlight strategies that can reduce environments that attract mosquito-breeding areas. Further to this, the AGIA is also keeping abreast of the water regulatory bodies with respect to water usage. The AGIA will look at introducing water conservation at member golf courses in the next several months. BRITISH COLUMBIA The chapter s current membership stands at an impressive 138. Golfmax Demo Day The Golfmax Demo Day was held at the Point Grey Golf & Country Club on March 26, with over 60 owners/operators and their staff in attendance. The day began with a very interesting presentation by BackCheck on employee reference checks. Backcheck provides referral and reference checks for many major companies in Canada. Golf courses can access the Backcheck website at Chapter and national presentations were followed by breakout sessions covering F&B, the pro shop and the maintenance department. The day concluded with the Golfmax tradeshow and lunch. Many thanks are extended to George Pinches and the staff at Point Grey for providing outstanding service. BC Allied Golf Association Meeting The BC Allied Golf Association met to discuss several items of interest to the BC golf industry. As a group of associations we will support many of the various golf initiatives in BC over the next season. Further, the BCAGA will be endorsing the IPM programs of our golf courses and encouraging the growth of the membership in our related associations. The BCAGA is working on other programs relating to industry issues or concerns. Master Distributor for BC Chapter Ontrak Purchasing and Consulting Services (a Golfmax Program supplier) recently announced their partnership with Neptune Food Services as the BC master distributor for the Ontrak Program. Neptune Food Services is located in Delta, BC and currently supplies many NGCOA golf courses. "We are confident that this new partnership will strengthen the Golfmax Program and will provide rebate revenues to the BC Chapter," stated Don Hand, National Service Manager for Ontrak. ATM Machines The BC Chapter is pleased to announce that DirectCash (our newest corporate member) will provide ATM machines to BC Chapter members. The agreement with DirectCash provides the club with an ATM machine at no cost. Revenues from transactions will be split between the club and DirectCash. The machines will be installed for a minimal fee and can be connected to a current credit card tele line. The NGCOA BC Chapter will also receive a portion of the transaction fee back to support future initiatives. Propane Deal A small committee is looking into the possibility of renewing a propane agreement with a BC supplier for 2003 and beyond. It is hoped that a new agreement can be announced by midsummer. License plates for golf carts Investigations into the mandatory use of license plates on golf carts that enter parking lots are ongoing. The Board is approaching the subject through the ICBC and BC Licensing and is hoping for a standardized policy similar to other provinces where license plates are not required. Visit the NGCOA Canada's official website to access the latest chapter news, lobbying updates, Golfmax Supplier deals and past issues of Golf Business Canada magazine. 5 NGCOA News To eliminate landmines, you can help with some hazards of your own. Canada s most challenging fairways are lined with daunting hazards and formidable bunkers. But for many around the world, just stepping outside can be a matter of life and death. In fact, every 29 minutes another victim is maimed or killed by hidden landmines. Your generosity could help. Please open your golf course to a Night of a Thousand Dinners fundraising tournament and banquet. And encourage your golfers to hold dinners of their own at home with friends and family. In doing so, you could save lives. For more information, visit or call Night Of 1000 Dinners NGCOA Canada Golf Courses To Raise Funds & Awareness For The Canadian Landmine Foundation Last year, the NGCOA Canada entered into a relationship with the Canadian Landmine Foundation to help generate fundraising within the golf industry for the ongoing challenge of clearing landmines. The effort involved our participation in a Night Of 1000 Dinners, a global fundraiser with 31 different countries participating. Every dollar raised by the golf industry was matched in contributions by the federal government, generating approximately $80,000 from fundraising dinners held at golf courses across Canada. For 2003, the Night Of 1000 Dinners will once again break bread and all NGCOA Canada golf courses are encouraged to give full consideration to participate in this worthwhile initiative. Not only will your involvement save the lives of innocent men, women and specifically children, but taking November 6th is when the golf industry will 'break bread' in support of the global campaign to remove land mines. part in an event like this presents your club with a tremendous public relations opportunity within your community, as you involve the media and generate positive word of mouth publicity. To participate, your golf course would dedicate a dinner, tournament, or similar event late in the season, typically October or November, which will become a Night Of 1000 Dinners fundraiser. The expectation is not to donate your golf or F&B, but to add a separate fundraising component. Supporting marketing materials are available from the Canadian Landmine Foundation and charitable tax receipts will also be provided. November 6th will be the highlight of the publicity for Night Of 1000 Dinners around the world, and there will be some high profile celebrity involvement to help generate publicity. Spearheading this campaign, as spokespeople for this cause, are Heather Mills and Paul McCartney. McCartney will be doing a fundraising concert to kick off the publicity on September 23rd. It is important to recognize how much we in the golf industry assume the use of so much land, without concerns over safety, while so many other regions of the world cannot even send out their children to play, states Jeff Calderwood, executive director of the NGCOA Canada. NGCOA Canada golf courses can make a significant difference because clearing landmines is entirely a function of having enough money to do so. The fact that the entire effort to ban and clear landmines throughout the world was initiated right here in Canada back in 97 makes a nice connection to the NGCOA Canada leadership on this issue. In our first year of this initiative, some NGCOA members chose to create themed dinners featuring a selection of dinner servings that represent the affected countries, and this is just one example of the creativity that can be applied to making your Night Of 1000 Dinners event into both a successful fundraiser as well as a very enjoyable and profitable function. Additional marketing materials will be sent to all NGCOA Canada golf courses as the golf season progresses and commitments by participating courses will be required in August.
