5 resort view 3 Editor Tan Sze Wah theeditorspeaks We could not decide on the SGA League Team or Youth Bowlers Team cover in honour of their respective Inter-Club title wins, so we decided to do a double cover. NSRCC SGA League Team has certainly hit on a winning formula, closing in on their 3rd successive Overall Champion title in the SGA Inter-Club League Congratulations to the team on this outstanding accomplishment. If you are an avid and frequent golfer, join our league team by contacting our golfing department to register your interest today. You can practise and perfect your golf skills at a competitive level. It has been a delightful coincidence as our youth bowlers also won the 14th Youth Inter-Club Bowling Mixed League 2013 Champion title. Hear our youths tell their success stories with their display of determination, dedication and how they pulled off the win as a team. Catch all the action on pages We also bring you highlights from the Southwest Monsoon Grand Prix, Open House and 19th Adult Inter- Club Bowling League, in the Seen & Heard pages. In Golf 101, we take a look at loose impediments, a common encounter for many of us during our rounds of golf. Know your rights within the rules to deal with these objects without running afoul of the Rules of Golf. For the club to remain relevant and healthy, two new committees, namely the Strategic Review and Engagement Committees have been formed. Both committees shall be working closely with the Board and Management to enhance the Club and facilitate engagement between members and the Management. In this end of the year issue of RV, I wish all readers Happy Holidays and a fantastic start to 2014! 9 seen&heard resort view 7 Tenpin Bowler Ismail Wins Silver Medals at European Championships in Prague ohammed Ismail, Assistant Executive, Bowling M Operations who has been with NSRCC for seven years, has done us proud again! At the recent European Championships in Prague held from 23 August to 1 September, he claimed two silver medals for the Singles Event and All Events. Hosted by the Czech Blind Sportsmen Association, a total of 44 bowlers from 10 countries namely Australia, Czech Republic, Finland, Great Britain, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, Singapore and Slovakia took part in the competition. I believe I did the right thing at the right time along with the advice of my coach, Francis Liew. It may be just little things like changing bowling balls and targeting but usually it makes the difference in winning or losing. For me, winning isn t something that happens on the lanes when the ball hits the pocket and gives you a strike, it is something that is building mentally and physically everyday when you train and every night that you dream. Simply incredible Ismail My secret in winning is never think of the outcome, just do your best, enjoy the game and everything will take place naturally. We are proud of you Ismail! 22 resort view 20 Member Feature Participant gets into the action with the F1 racing car stimulator A smile from the Lotus Team collectables booth A First-Timer at F1 ave you ever had the chance to see a Formula 1 race? For me it was H an experience like no other. Before this, I had the chance to watch Girls Gymnastics at the Youth Olympics but that was the closest I came to attending a global sporting event. Hearing the turbo-charged engines and feeling the ground shake as cars sped past was simply exhilarating. This will be my first experience of the Marina Bay Grand Prix Street circuit. It was 4pm and a long walk across from Millenia Singapore to the Sky Suites where I was headed to. The Sky Suites are said to offer guests a good vantage point of the high adrenaline racing action, from the private viewing balcony or atop the open-air rooftop Sky Terrace. Circuit park featuring Singapore GP merchandise and team memorabilia bustling with activities There I stood with uninterrupted views of cars exiting the Pit Lane and drivers negotiating the sharp Turn 2. It offered an excellent view of the Marina Bay Skyline! Inside the dining suite, I was treated to fine cuisine and impeccable service and even had access to an outdoor viewing area. Greeted by the suite ambassador and offered a welcome drink, I decided not to be inhibited by the indulgence and decided to quickly make my way to the F1 Village to soak up the atmosphere and make the best of my experience there. Epic turnout The village was bustling with activity and fans were checking out their favourite teams merchandise, interactive games and gastronomic delights. There were even several pockets of open-air pit stages with live entertainment to rouse the crowds. After spending an hour jostling with the crowds, it was time to take refuge somewhere quiet, up the flyer. The massive F1 race looked so small even though it was immensely packed with crowds. I could see the GP drivers parade in their classic cars. Outdoor lounge located above the action with comfortable couches all over

23 Member Feature resort view 21 View of the Sky Terrace Behold the awesome skyline Bird s eye view of the action on the pit lane It was hard to miss out on the track action with the live commentary and I was on the top of the news who was leading or crashed out. A treat for Mercedes and Ferrari race fans Marina Pit Stage and Village Stage open-air concert In all honesty, not being a racing fan myself, F1 used to be perceived as an event for the well-heeled and motorsports fans and not a wee bit enticing to watch on TV. However, it was surreal to watch the race under the floodlights and a treat for the eyes with all that high-octane action. Just one tip for newbies, you have to bring along earplugs. However note that it will shut you from all commentary, friends banter and deafening roars of the race car engines. It was a very memorable experience for me nonetheless. 24 resort view 22 frontpage Youth Team Returns Home Victorious with Inter-Club Bowling League Trophy Team NSRCC took home the 14th Youth Inter-Club Bowling League 2013 trophy after 23 weeks of intense competition from March to August. fter their nail-biting victory at Seletar Country Club (SCC), the A youths claimed their rights to the trophy. It was a beautiful victory for the team as they wrestled the trophy from Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC) who had retained the title for three consecutive times and when no one had expected the team to win. The team scored a total of 38,171 pinfalls and also won the Team High Game Scratch. Bowler, Joey Yeo won the High Game Scratch (Girls) with 279 pinfalls. We didn t expect to win; it was a bonus as the odds were against us. Our team spirit as well as our supporters who were there for us every week contributed to our win. Even though we had our awkward moments with Benjamin coaching the team for the first time, he was supportive on and off the lanes, said Jonathan Hong, Team Captain. Loke Chor added, It is fantastic to win this year s championship. We won by a single point and it was a nail-biting finish. It is my most memorable win as this is my last year with the youth team. For Huiwen who also trains with the national youth team, she thanked coach, Benjamin for his belief, He believes spares are really important, at almost every training session, he would try to give all bowlers an opportunity to train. He is committed and passionate towards bowling and never fails to come down to coach us. We deserved the win! Joey, new addition to the team, remembered vividly that at the last deciding match it was pretty intense and everyone on the team was cheering loudly down to the last frame, It was heartening to see how everyone came together. Benjamin makes an effort to come down every Saturday to try to get to know and understand everyone better and help them on the lanes. I am happy to be a part of this fun loving and nice community. As Florence Khemlani, Family Recreation Convenor defines it, NSRCC trains champions. Absolutely amazing and well done! NSRCC has won the championship three times in 2004, 2009 and 2013.

The two memorable moments would be; my chip for birdie on the final hole at Jurong Country Club to win my match and scoring the point for the team to square the game with Sembawang Country Club and defending our title as overall champions at Warren Golf & Country Club. I am proud to have been part of the team. It was definitely an unforgettable experience. Elizabeth Ang, Ladies Division I m glad to say that the only challenge I had at the beginning was finding the right partner. After being able to work well with my partner, the league became a more enjoyable experience for me. The most memorable moment was as I was driving back from the 18th hole with my partner at Laguna, the whole team was waiting at the club house all anxious to know the results as we needed one more point for the win and I gave them a thumbs up to show that a win for us and the next thing was unforgettable. 32 resort view 30 Tiny Stars Shine at First NSRCC Junior Medal Tournament The inaugural NSRCC junior medal was a huge success, drawing over 70 junior golfers aged 4-16 years to play at Executive Par 3 course. unior players without official handicap were allowed J to participate in the tournament, presenting them an opportunity to ease into the game and gain valuable tournament experience. Most importantly, this will help them develop their love and flair for the sport. The tournament was split into three divisions, namely Divisions A, B and C also known as Tiny Star. Great weather conditions helped some on the greens get off to a quick start. onpar On the A Division, Daniel Ian secured the top spot while Nicholas Tan and Lee Brayden clinched the B and C Divisions titles, respectively. 36 resort view 34 onpar Golf101 Rule 23 Loose Impediments Loose impediments are natural objects such as pebbles and leaves that can be removed without penalty as long as the object and ball are not in a hazard. Examples Loose clod of Earth A fallen tree or tree branch Loose Impediments Sand and loose soil on putting green are classified as loose impediments Stones, rocks or pebbles Ant hills, ants, worms, insects, or heaps made by them (e.g. spider webs) provided they are not adhering to ball Dealing with loose sand or soil on the putting green Place ball marker Gently sweep or clear the loose sand or Proceed with play soil with towel Objects that are solidly embedded or growing into the ground or stuck on the ball are not considered as loose impediments. Examples Loose soil is not loose impediment through the green A fallen tree or tree branch attached to stump is not a loose impediment ** Player must be careful not to cause the ball to move when clearing loose impediments. If movement of the ball occurs due to the removal of loose impediments, the golfer must replace the ball and incur a one stroke penalty. * Through the green is defined as the entire area of the course except teeing ground, putting green of the hole being played and all hazards on the course.

37 onpar resort view 35 Trouble Shots The Back-Handed Shot? The point here is golf is played outdoors, off uneven ground, in varying weather conditions, against Mother Nature. You have to navigate your ball around a playing field with so many potential unplayable lie situations that until you try different shots, you ll never know what you are capable of. In our defence, our training grounds are predominantly Driving Ranges, hitting off square mats with constant conditions of lie, hitting balls with little to no consequence so you can figure out what that type of environment produces. Let s take a look at one alternative shot choice, the back-handed shot. Sometimes due to where the ball winds up beside a tree or bush, because we are right or left-handed, the ball lies on the wrong side of the tree/bush to how we want to play the shot normally. If we could play the ball the opposite way to how we normally do, that would be one choice however not everyone is ambidextrous. However playing the ball back-handed is an option most of us seldom consider but it is really not as difficult as it sounds if practiced. Here s how Take a good look to ensure your aim is correct (Photo 1). Establish a clear picture in your mind s eye of where you want to hit to. Set up with the toe of the club resting on the ground behind the ball (Photo 2), not the entire sole. The ball position can vary depending on the height you need to hit but generally it will be close to your toe line. Take a short swing back (no wild haymakers here ladies and gentlemen, unless you find it fun to hit yourself in the ankle) and accelerate down and through the ball (Photos 3 and 4). The body keeps pretty calm during the whole swing, no panic, just a steady head. I learnt this shot from watching Greg Norman (former world number 1) who, as a trainee golf professional at Royal Queensland in Brisbane back in the 1970 s, the same Club where I did my traineeship 20 years later, used to pick the balls from the Range there every day before close. He would flick the balls from the outside into the middle by using this backhanded technique and he realised, after some practice that he got quite good at it. It developed from there and he started using it in tournaments or whenever he had the occasion to use it. I just followed him. It s a shot that you may only have the opportunity to play once or twice a year. However, in one recent tournament, I played it twice IN ONE HOLE, the 10th hole at Laguna National Masters Course go figure! Phil Brew Director Phil Brew Golf Academy
