2 Team/Player Concept 1. Be at every practice. 2. Always give 100 percent. 3. Be willing to spend extra time outside of practice to improve. 4. Be positive toward yourself and encourage others. 5. Golf is a mental game, having a good mindset is the key to a good practice and a good round. Positive Player Characteristics 1. Players who listen. 2. Players who are willing to try new and unfamiliar skills without question. 3. Players who are good students. 4. Players who are honest and demonstrate integrity. 5. Players who have a love for the game of golf. Grades All athletes must maintain at least a 70 in all classes to be eligible for competition as determined by the UIL. Golfers must be passing all classes at UIL grade check on March 7, Not doing so may result in removal from the team. Equipment and Uniforms It is the athlete s responsibility to provide their own set of golf clubs in a golf bag. Golf shoes are not required, but if you have golf shoes they must be soft spikes. All school issued shirts and/or apparel are property of BISD and must be returned upon request. Shirts are not to be worn at school and are only for tournaments. Communication We must work together as a team in order to achieve our goals. Therefore, any name calling, put-downs, or negative talk among team members will only hurt the success of the program. Continual communication between the coach and the parents will help the athlete succeed and stay focused. Negative communication between players or between players and coaches will be handled on an individual basis with consequences up to and including removal from the team. An list will be created so that parents can communicate and share transportation responsibilities to and from practice. Conduct and Sportsmanship Players are to conduct themselves with respect for fellow players, competitors, and coaches at all times, at practice, on the course and during school. Players are to respect the property of others including equipment and the golf course itself. Disregard for the rules of golf and proper etiquette, especially during tournament competition, is unacceptable. ISS/DAEP If you are in ISS/AEP you will not be allowed to practice or compete with the team that day. We expect good behavior from my athletes. Good choices are a requirement to be included on the golf team, not an option. Not following school expectations may result in removal from the team. Transportation Each player is responsible for their own transportation to and from the various practice facilities. Facilities in the practice rotation may include The Caddy Shack Driving Range (Temple), Tee Box Driving Range (Nolanville), Greenbrier Golf Course (Moody), Sammons Golf Course (Temple), Stone Tree Golf Club (Killeen), Mill Creek Golf Course (Salado), or other facility. Bus transportation will only be provided to and from tournaments. Those playing in the tournament will ride with the team to the golf tournament. If a parent needs to take a player after the tournament, please speak to the coach of your golfer. Golfers will need to be signed-out by a parent before leaving. After school tutorials If your golfer has been selected for before or after school tutoring please notify your coach about what days you will need to be at tutoring. It is important that tutorials are attended and the coaches are supportive of the academic needs of each student. Practice Practice time should not be used to catch up on homework, make up tests, or go to any other appointments. Our practice time is limited and you need to be there. If there is any reason that you should miss a practice, you will need to notify your coach the day before or as soon as possible. Daily practice will revolve around several facilities including area courses and driving ranges. Do plan on dedicating your after school hours of 4:30-6:30 p.m. to the golf team Monday - Thursday through the first week of May. Monday: Caddy Shack, Temple (Classroom days, TBD or optional) Tuesday: Sammons Golf Links, Temple Wednesday: Caddy Shack, Temple (Classroom days, TBD or optional) Thursday: Sammons Links, Temple / Wildflower CC (WCC members with Coach Kirk, all others at Sammons) Practice pick-up Please be on time to pick-up your golfer. We love your golfers, but we love our families too.
3 Fees All golfers are responsible for any associated fees at the respective practice facilities. These range from $4 to $10 per day. Allow $20-25 per week. Tournament schedule 1. Monday, March 17 th Copperas Cove Hills of Cove Golf Course, Copperas Cove 2. Monday, March 24 th Midway Cottonwood Country Club, Waco 3. Thursday, April 3 rd St. Mary s Wildflower Country Club 4. Tuesday, April 8 th Temple Sammons Links Golf Course, Temple 5. Thursday, April 17 th District Stonetree Golf Course, Killeen 6. Thursday, April 24 th Belton Middle Schools Mill Creek Golf Club, Salado No Parent Coaching at tournaments Coaching during tournaments by parents is not allowed. Only coaches can talk to players during a round and this must occur between the green of one hole and the tee of the next. If you feel the need to tell your golfer something please relay that information to a coach during tournament play. Spectator Distance Rule of 50 feet from the players at all times (minimum) and cart path only (this is new for all tournaments 2014). Extra Tournaments Playing in additional tournaments is a great way to gain experience. There are numerous golf tournaments in the area (especially in the summer). Your coaches will provide information when it becomes available. Lightning Safety Spring season golf brings with it the possibility of thunderstorms. Your coaches will try as best as we can to cancel practice in a timely manner if the weather looks to be severe but we cannot control the weather. If lighting is in the area, practice must be stopped immediately. There must be an absence of thunder and lightning for 30 minutes before practice or play can resume. Most often if lightning causes a stoppage in practice the rest of the practice will be cancelled. Fundraising In lieu of a student fundraising activity, a voluntary donation of $20 per player will be accepted to cover team operating costs through the season. All cash donations and checks made out to each school will be recorded and deposited into the Golf account with funds being used directly to support the team and the player s efforts. Area Professional instructors Your middle school coaches are more than happy to provide instruction on how to best play the game of golf. However, they are teachers first and not professional golfers. Golf is played as a team but is an individual sport that demands individual attention. Practice time is limited, and it is not possible to provide each golfer with the one-on-one attention that is needed to most effectively improve in the short time we have. Below is a list of area facilities that provide lessons and instruction. The list is not inclusive and there are, perhaps, multiple quality instructors at each location. Best advice is to find a swing coach that has a personality that matches your golfer and provides lessons on a schedule that works for you at a price you are comfortable with. Heart of Texas Golf (254) Ray Lamb, John Antunes Wildflower Country Club (254) Greg Antunes Sammons Golf Links (254) Robert Ward Stonetree Golf Club (254) Brad Belson Caddy Shack Driving Range (254) Don Mitchell Other Spring Activities It is possible to do more than one activity in the spring such as track, cheer, band, baseball, etc. Please try to limit the amount of time away from golf practice and arrange your other activities around the golf tournament schedule. Belton ISD pays the entry fee for you to be there. Those fees are not refundable. Your teammates and coaches are depending on you to be at each tournament. If you have a conflict with the schedule please let your coach know ASAP. Field Trip Each year we take a golf team field trip to watch a practice round of the PGA Tour event at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. A good time is had by all! The date for this year is Tuesday, May 20 th. More information to follow. 4 2014 Belton Tiger Middle Schools Golf Tournament Schedule Monday, March 17 th Monday, March 24 th Thursday, April 3 rd Tuesday, April 8 th Thursday, April 17 th Thursday, April 24 th Copperas Cove Invitational Hills of Cove Golf Course, Copperas Cove Midway Invitational Cottonwood Country Club, Waco St. Mary s Invitational Wildflower Country Club Temple Invitational Sammons Links Golf Course, Temple District Tournament Stonetree Golf Course, Killeen Belton Middle Schools Invitational Mill Creek Golf Club, Salado All tournaments are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. instructions and rules meeting with a shotgun start to follow, unless otherwise noted. Tee off to take place no earlier than 3:45 p.m. Regular Practice Schedule All golf practices are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. If golfers take a 9 hole round, they will finish after 6:30 p.m. Mondays Tuesdays Wednesdays Thursdays Fridays Caddy Shack, Temple (Classroom Sessions, TBD or optional) Sammons Golf Links, Temple (Combined practice with BMS, LBMS and SBMS golfers) Caddy Shack, Temple (Classroom Sessions, TBD or optional) Sammons Links, Temple / Wildflower CC (Wildflower members at Wildflower CC with Coach Kirk all others with Pipes & Rasar at Sammons) OFF COMBINED AND SPLIT PRACTICE SCHEDULE (overcoming limited practice space and highway construction) Due to limited practice space in the area as well as the current road construction projects on I-35 and US HWY 190, we are limited to the use of only two public golfing facilities for regular practices: Sammons Links Golf Course and Caddy Shack Driving Range. We are also challenged with the fact that multiple golf teams practice at Sammons (Temple middle schools, Temple High School boys and girls teams, Belton High School boys and girls teams). Therefore, we have been limited on the availability and use of Sammons. We are allowed one combined middle school practice day on Tuesdays at Sammons this year, but we can only take half of our total number of golfers from all three middle schools to Sammons on Thursdays. Since over half of our golfers this year are members at Wildflower CC, we will have a split practice schedule on Thursdays. All Wildflower members, from either BMS, LBMS and SBMS, will report to Wildflower CC for Thursday practices with Coach Kirkpatrick (BMS Coach); all others will report to Sammons at 4:30 p.m. with Coach Rasar (LBMS Coach) and Coach Pipes (SBMS Coach). All golfers will report to the putting green to check in with the coaches at both sites on Tuesday s and Thursdays. 5 Our Middle School Golf Rules (Not really in the golf rules book) 1. IMPROVED LIE ALLOWED: Place your ball within one score card length of it s original location, not nearer the hole. Get in the habit of improving your lie, it will help eliminate a couple of stokes off of your total score. 2. OUT OF BOUNDS: Normal Out of Bounds penalty does not apply. If you go out of bounds, take a drop within two club lengths where it crossed the margin of play, then take a 1 stroke penalty. Every Out of Bounds and Hazard is played as a Lateral Hazard (look up Lateral Hazard in the USGA Rules of Golf). 3. PUTTING: Use continuous putting. Once you start, go ahead and finish. 4. MAXIMUM STROKE CONTROL: Maximum score on any hole is 8. If you lay 7, pick up and add one stroke. If you continue to play out, you will be required to take that score. 5. TOURNAMENT SPECIFIC RULES: Remember, some of the rules may change per tournament due to local rules and specific tournament rules. 6. SPECTATOR DISTANCE RULE: Parents and spectators may not speak to or coach the players at anytime during the course of play. However, they are allowed to clap and make encouraging remarks, such as: Nice Shot!, Good Shot!, Great Drive!, etc. Parents and spectators are required to remain on the cart path and at least 50 feet from the players. My Classroom Rules Always Apply: SR 2 Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful. Be Prompt arrive on time and ready to learn. Be Prepared have all materials necessary for class. Be Polite keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself and speak kindly to and about others. Be Productive follow directions as given and keep focused on all instructional activities. Be Disciplined Discipline Leads to Freedom! Consequences for not following the rules of golf, etiquette, or classroom rules: Verbal warning for first offense My lunch Detention Write a paper on golf etiquette Parent Call final warning Miss a tournament Cut from the team ISS = possible immediate dismal from the golf team.
6 Belton Middle School Golf Team Practice Rules & Guidelines General Golf Practice Guidelines: 1. Sammons Park Golf Course and/or Wildflower CC all players are required to check-in with Coach at the practice green prior to obtaining practice balls or taking a practice round. 2. Sammons Park Golf Course and/or Wildflower CC Practice Routine: i. Meeting at the practice putting green. ii. Putting drill. Putting drills must be completed prior to going to range or the course. iii. Range, Short Game area, etc. unless released to play a practice round. iv. If you are released to take a practice round, you are required to notify your parents in advance as you will most likely finish well beyond 6:30 p.m. 3. Caddy Shack Golf Range check-in with the facility and tell the staff that you are a Belton Middle School golfer. You may purchase balls on arrival. 4. ALL PLAYERS ARE REQUIRED TO CHECK OUT WITH THE COACH PRIOR TO LEAVING GOLF PRACTICE! No Exceptions! Practice Round Guidelines: 1. Golfers must check-in with the coach prior to checking in with the golf course to play a practice round. 2. Golfers must play in groups of 3 or 4 (no two somes) at all times! No pairs or groups of 5 are allowed without the permission of the coach. 3. All groupings will be assigned by the coach. No exceptions! 4. The 9-hole course of play (or the starting hole) will be determined by the golf course. Do not request to start on another hole. This may only be changed by the golf course or the coach with the permission of the Starter. 5. No player may walk or walk off of the golf course alone without the permission of the golf coach. If you are called off the course by a parent or want to leave your group for any reason you must have your parent call and notify the coach. A voic by the player is not sufficient. The coach will pick up any player in a golf cart. If you are in a group of three, you may not leave the group until the coach has given permission to do so. For example, if a player says to the group I must leave, all remaining players are to ask the player, Have your parent s spoken to coach? 6. No parent may call a player off of the golf course during a practice round without notifying the coach. A voic is not sufficient. 7. All golfers are required to allow faster groupings to play through. If you are teeing off, or if others are waiting extended amounts of time, you must waive them through or give them the opportunity to play through at the next tee box. 8. Modified Middle School Rules apply at all times. All Hazards, Lost Balls and Out of Bounds are to be played as a Lateral Hazard. If your ball crosses out of bounds (marked by white stakes), you are REQUIRED to take a drop two club lengths from where the ball crossed the margin marked for out of bounds no closer to the hole. If you lay 7 at any time during play, you are REQUIRED to pick up your ball, add 1 and take an 8 on the score card for that hole. 9. All players are required to keep a score card on themselves, plus one other in the group. In other words, no one player keeps all of the scores for the group. All practice rounds should be played tournament style. In other words, no mulligans. Practice like you complete; compete like you practice. 10. Your grouping must stay together. Do not play ahead of the player s in your group. Encourage teamwork and etiquette at all times. Scheduled Practices & Expectations: While golf is played as an individual sport, we compete as a team. All golfers are expected to practice with the team. Coaches must be able to monitor and evaluate the golfers skill set. However, if you have a private lesson with a golf professional on a scheduled practice day, this is acceptable for which a golfer may be excused from practice.
