5 resort view 3 Editor Tan Sze Wah theeditorspeaks Dear Members, This year our annual Charity Golf tournament was held at Kranji Sanctuary golf course on weekend of May 16 and 17. We are grateful to Dr Ng Eng Hen, Defence Minister, for gracing our event and giving away prizes to our participants and funds to our beneficiaries. The Management and organising committee worked hard behind the scenes to ensure that everything ran like clockwork and you can view all the event photos on our Facebook page. In this issue, we feature two of our staff for their quick thinking and action which saved the day for two visitors at our club recently. Their professionalism certainly make us feel safe while at NSRCC. Thank you guys. With National Day around the corner, we ve put together an exclusive SG50 feature, showcasing some of NSRCC s staff. In this issue, we continue with updates on our golf course development works and there is a report on the recently completed swimming carnival. If you are looking at getting fit the right way, Rohmat, one of our fitness instructors, shares some simple steps to follow on Page 19! The weather has been very hot recently and so do stay well hydrated when you are golfing. I wish to inform you that there is an increase in complaints of dangerous play at our golf course recently. Sometimes we strike the ball very well and it travels far. So please exercise patience and let the front guys drive off before playing your shot. After all, it is likely we will keep meeting each other at NSRCC for many more years so why let an unpleasant incident mar our future outings? Thank you and have a good day. Cheers! Sze Wah

6 resort view 4 seen&heard A Splashing Good Time at NSRCC Swimming Carnival and Flea Market! SRCC hosted its 18th Swimming Carnival on N 7 June 2015, along with its Flea Market event near the swimming pool s entrance. This year s edition drew more than 70 young swimmers over 30 events, an increase from the previous year. The day did not get off to a good start; a CAT1 notice was issued shortly before registration was slated to start at 8.30 am. Ominous grey skies threatened to disrupt the day s festivities. Nonetheless, the competitors warmed up for the day ahead from 9 am to around 9.20 am, before the first event kicked off at 9.35 am. Swimmers in action! Thankfully, while it did rain over the course of the carnival, no CAT1 notice was issued, and spirits were not dampened as spectators gathered at the sheltered areas at the end of the lanes. Parents remained at the side-lines cheering for their kids, armed with their cameras and handphones. Participants turned up bright and early for the event. All registered swimmers received a goodie bag sponsored by F1 Recreation. The last event for the day was the Parent-Child relay, which saw four teams racing to the finish point. Mr Dennis Tan, Billiard Convener from the Resort & Facilities Committee, did the honours of giving out prizes to the competition and lucky draw winners. Meanwhile, vendors at the Flea Market interacted with the crowds that milled around in between events. A young family manned a table selling swimming related items. Despite the rain, we manage to sell some items. It s a good experience for my family to explore this opportunity, said Mr Tang Yong Chong, a NSRCC member. Another table saw an ice cream vendor serving up yummy scoops of interesting flavours such as Red Velvet, Horlicks, and Vanilla. All Swimming Carnival participants received a coupon for them to redeem a cup of ice cream. This is our third time participating in NSRCC Flea Market since it was introduced. This location is better than at the Promenade because of the human traffic flow, commented Sarah, Ice-cream vendor. All in all, the day was a great success, thanks to the support of all participants! Eager swimmers warm up in the pool while their parents get their cameras ready.

8 resort view 6 seen&heard A National Day Special Feature! To every Singaporean, SG50 holds a deep meaning to them, as 2015 marks 50 years of our country s independence. In many ways, most of us, regardless of our age, remembers something special about Singapore. Big or small, everyone s role has been essential, and as we commemorate this significant occasion, some of our staff share their deepest moments as this grand milestone of Singapore makes its mark in history. Bernard Chen Bernard Chen, Officer (Accounts) B ernard lights up when asked about how he remembers Singapore. I grew up in the Sembawang area, and when I was a small boy, one of my favourite things to do would be to climb tall fruits tree (which his family grew!), and gaze into the sun as it set. Back in the days where 40 % of land area in Singapore was occupied by rubber plantations, Bernard remembers another one of his pastimes, cycling through them and two of the routes most travelled by him? Lorong Gambas and Jalan Ulu Sembawang. A very patriotic Bernard served NS from in the Armour Unit, and was also given the award for Best Recruit for Basic Military Training during his time. National Service training was tough, but it proved to be useful and I also feel that through this, I have contributed to the progress of Singapore, because strong armed forces are essential for the stability of a nation. Bernard truly believes that with stability, Singapore has progressed rapidly for the past 50 years. Tan Chen Hock Days to remember Bernard, a young man who served his nation with pride. Tan Chen Hock, Executive (Security) His Certificate of Conduct still looks crisp and brand new!

Tham Boon Siang Tham Boon Siang, CSO (Jackpot) Some of the young men of the Civil Defence Corps, can you spot Mr Tham? Tham remembers the days when he grew up during World War II Mr in Those were dark days for every Singaporean of my era and something that will always stick in my mind. said Mr Tham as he recalls his childhood as a 7-year old boy, in the midst of an on-going war. He goes on to say that Singapore has truly come a long way, and is privileged to have been given a chance to watch it grow from something small, to something phenomenal. You know, during my childhood, if people couldn t afford to have a television, we would gather at a neighbour s house that had one. They shared what they had, and at the same time friendships were forged as he goes on to talk about how the youths of Singapore are very blessed to have almost everything at their fingertips. Mr Tham is amongst one the first batch of men who served in the Civil Defence Corps, who began training in He says that though it has been many years, some of the skills taught to him, he remembers till today. Mr Tham s wishes for Singapore? Continue to grow and be the best, you have always been a home to me and I want to see this country prosper even more. hen Hock, now in his 60s looks back on his days when he was a young man, who just enlisted in the Army under the Singapore Infantry Regiment. As he speaks about the days when he was serving the Army he mentions During my time, the recruits stayed in wooden houses, which served as a shelter for us after a hard day of training. One of his proudest moments? Chen Hock was one of the first batches of Singaporean troops in 1969, which travelled to West Malaysia to be part of a Five-Power exercise, involving countries such as Australia, Britain, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore known as Bersatu Padu. I learnt a lot in during this exercise from all the other troops from the various countries, we used this time to talk about strategies and learn from each other. As Singapore celebrates its 50 years of Independence, Chen Hock has this to say We have definitely moved forward all these years, especially in terms of our armed forces, our country is well-protected.

Semi-Final was streamed down to four players: Brandon Thian, who returned to NSRCC s Snooker fraternity only in February 2014; newcomer Nicholas Chia; junior regular player Sim Qi Xuan, and another newcomer Jackson Law. Champion Brandon Thian (Right) with Billiard Convener Dennis Tan (Left) The Final was narrowed down to Brandon Thian and Nicholas Chia. It was yet another gruelling finale reminiscent of last year in more ways than one, as both brilliant cueists battled it out neck-to-neck to the final moments. Congratulations to Brandon Thian, whose name will be printed on the Roll of Honour board in the Billiard Room and on the Challenge trophy for the first time. He won himself 1st Prize trophy, $300 cash and a cue case worth $230 sponsored by Cuesports Singapore. 11 seen&heard resort view 9 NSRCC Staff Save The Day! The Club would like to commend a few of our Staff who displayed exemplary behavior under urgent situations. Swimming Pool On June 5, a guest staying at a bungalow was in the deep end of the adult pool when his leg started to cramp badly. Upon noticing the guest struggling in the pool, Budiman, Pool Supervisor, threw the floatation device to the guest while Danilo Balandra, Lifeguard, went to his area. Budiman and Danilo worked to pull the victim aside, assisted by a member who happened to be swimming in the pool as well. The conscious guest was brought to the poolside area near the Jacuzzis to recover while an ambulance was called for. After breathing through an oxygen mask, the guest recovered sufficiently and requested for the ambulance to be cancelled. He was advised to consult a doctor if he experienced any discomfort later. The guest returned to his bungalow when he felt well again. Golf Course (L) ( R) Poh Eng Choo & Phay Quan Theo On May 19, a member was golfing when he suddenly felt unwell; having had an angioplasty procedure earlier this year, the member feared it could possibly be the onset of a heart attack. Phay Quan Theo (Ah Kim), Chief Marshal, Poh Eng Choon (Ah Poh), Senior Buggy Steward, and the golf reception staff reacted swiftly. They managed to arrange for an ambulance immediately and in the meantime, provided shade and also cooling me down with icy towels, very professionally. I m extremely proud of your staff, said the member. After examination by doctors, the member was thought to have suffered from heat exhaustion, compounded by his compression garments. While it turned out to be a false alarm, it is thanks to the staff s calm demeanor and quick action that the member s discomfort was not prolonged. (L) ( R) Danny & Budiman

Doubt as to procedure, (commonly mentioned as playing a second ball) GOLF Player believe ball landed in GUR Player announce to marker he wish to invoke Rule 3-3 and drops a ball one club length from nearest point of relief. Player chooses that ball to count if rules allows and plays the second ball This rule is unique to golf stroke play format and is not an option in match play. During a stroke play competition if a player is doubtful of his rights or correct procedure and a referee is not readily available, the player may without penalty complete the hole with two balls. The player must announce his marker or fellow competitor that he is invoking the rule, inform them which ball to count first and then keep score for both balls played. He must then report the facts to the competition committee before submitting his scorecard. Player plays original ball. an obstruction is an integral part of the course. Another possibility could be when his ball comes to rest in a badly damaged area which he feels that should be declared as a Ground Under Repair, ie GUR. This will then be clarified with the referee or tournament committee later. The competitor must report the facts of the situation to the Committee before returning his score card. If he fails to do so, he is disqualified. Players might use this rule when there are ambiguities and they do not wish to delay play. Sometimes the referee will instruct them to do so as he dealing with matters at another part of the course. Some scenarios for this rule could be a player uncertain about if

13 onpar resort view 11 The Forgotten Rule Knowledge of the Rules of Golf can help you in your game. I hear it a lot, but often wonder if others who hear it actually realise the real game implications or examples whereby the statement holds true. Whilst watching a PGA Tour event on television recently I observed something strange, something that caught my attention whereby a top 10 player in the world made, what I would say, a colossal error in judgment centred around the rule on water hazards, Rule 26. And the fact that a top player in the world could make such an error you can only imagine how likely we Club golfers are going to make this same error in our own games. It s in regards to an option for Lateral Water Hazards that seldom gets used, hence it often gets forgotten. For Lateral Water Hazards (red stakes), on top of the usual options available to us for normal water hazards (yellow stakes), we have the option of dropping a ball to the side of the hazard, within 2-club lengths of the point of entry. But the rule allows us another option of dropping on the other side, of the hazard, also 2 club lengths from a point that is equidistant to the hole as the point of entry. This is the option that is forgotten because if we really think about it - in most cases it is seldom practical. In this situation during The Players Championship, Jason Day chose to drop his ball after his 2nd shot on the Par 5 had come to grief after clipping an over-hanging tree branch and made an unfortunate bounce down into the hazard. Red stakes ladies and gentlemen. Jason chose to drop his ball on the side where the ball had crossed leaving him a far more difficult 4th shot over the water and bunkers to the green where the pin was cut on the right side of the green. An easier shot to me and to the commentators at the time was to drop his ball on the other side, within 2 club lengths from the margin of the hazard, at a point that was equidistant to the hole, leaving him a far easier angle into the flag, without the need to cross any water. Sad to say Jason went on to make a 7 on the hole, a double bogey, which at their level on the PGA Tour, when they are in contention probably equates in monetary terms to $100,000 give or take a bit. Ouch! It does pay to know your rules, so keep this one stored away - you ll never know when you will need the FORGOTTEN RULE. A significant milestone it is indeed for our Club, as it has extended a helping hand to the less fortunate in the community, throughout all these years. This year, Charity Golf was held on May 16th and 17th, exclusively at Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course, making it an inaugural event for this location, while Changi undergoes reconfiguration! In line with the SG50 theme, NSRCC adopted homes which care and provide support for the aged in our society. The festivities for the two days started off with everyone s favourite game of golf and of course all eyes were set on winning one of the remarkable hole-in-one prizes! Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence, graced this special occasion as the Guest-ofHonour on Sunday, 17th May Despite the weather towards the end of the evening, everyone gaily settled in the function room of the clubhouse, with a lavish 8-course dinner awaiting them and their hungry tummies. Through this event, NSRCC has successfully raised a total of S$316,000 to support our beneficiaries for 2015! To build up the excitement, the Club will progressively post updates in our bi-monthly issues of RV, to keep all of our members in the loop on the progress! Construction Of A Lake s Base Construction phases of a retaining wall The bottom of the lake is lined with red clay to prevent seepage, which is more cost effective than using waterproof lining. As the red clay is applied onto the lake s sides, water is drained from the hole as part of the preparation work before clay is applied to the base. When the lake is filled, the clay will not be seen; water levels will reach the stone wall, which helps to prevent erosion and maintain the lake s shape. With many sharp curves in the design, the new 9-hole will require many of such structures to maintain its shape.

19 onpar resort view 17 Waterproofing sheets are laid down in shaped bunkers to prevent them from getting waterlogged. After the tee box hard casing is completed, troughs are dug for the installation of subsoil drainage. After the kerb and the base of the buggy paths are set, workers prepare to lay the concrete. Instead of using the usual precast concrete kerbing for the buggy paths, the use of specialised kerb making machinery moulds and forms the kerb as directed by the operator, which helps to create smoother curves at the turns. 21 onpar Get NSRCC! Core Conditioning and Strengthening Tips resort view view nless you are working towards a visible six pack, it can be very easy to U overlook core fitness. However, your core does not merely consist of your abdominals; the term refers to the group of muscles that make up the front, back, and sides of your midsection. Do not think of your core as a vanity muscle ; it is primarily a stabilizer and many day-to-day movements involve your core. Having a strong core can do wonders for your posture and help give you more strength in other exercises like running and walking. Rohmat, our friendly Fitness Instructor, demonstrates some exercise to try for a stronger core! Bridges Leg lifts Starting position: Lie down with your back flat, hands by your side and palms down, legs straight. Movement: Using your palms for support and balance, gradually lift your legs upwards, with feet parallel to ceiling. Variation: For an extra kick, try propelling your pelvis upwards by bending your knees slightly and pushing off your feet! Planks Starting position: Lie down with your back flat, hands by your side and palms down, knees bent and feet firmly flat on the ground. Movement: Pushing from your heels, lift your hips upwards, using your palms for support and balance. Movement is complete when your back and thighs are in line, with your upper body resting on your shoulder blades. Besides your back, this exercise also helps your glutes. Variation: For a greater challenge, try single leg glute bridges! As you lift your hips, pull one of your legs towards the ceiling. Starting position: Start off in the pushup position. Movement: Lower both your forearms to the ground so that both your elbows and fists are flat to the ground. Your palms should be balled up, and elbows directly underneath your shoulders. Straighten your body but keep your neck and spine neutral (neither arched nor rounded). Imagine that you re a plank of wood! Your body should be a single strong line from your head to your heels. Hold the position as long as you can, being mindful to activate your abs and glutes, with minimal fatigue in your back. TRX Workout You can also try doing suspended planks on the TRX system! Having to stabilise your body with your feet suspended on the straps will add an element of difficulty. Variations: No longer feeling the burn from planks? Try single leg planks. Keeping your body stable and straight, slowly lift one foot at a time off the ground. Another move to try on the TRX system: the Pike. Starting position: Begin in a suspended plank position, with your body in a straight line. Movement: Pressing down on your elbows and forearms, lift your hips towards the ceiling and move your legs closer to your body, until your body looks like an upside-down V or as high as you can go. Slowly lower your legs to return to starting position for one rep. More core exercises tend to focus on the abs; try plank twists for the muscles on the side, your obliques! Begin in a pushup position with your feet together. Bend your right knee across to the left as you slide your right foot up to the inside of your left knee. Your hips should turn to the left. Slide your right leg back to start and then repeat to the left for one rep.

22 resort view 20 In&AroundNSRCC A Guide to Our Bungalows ur bungalows are one of NSRCC s most popular amenities. Located at a mere stone s throw away from the East O Coast shoreline on one side and near our swimming pool on the other, it is the perfect tranquil location for a staycation with the family or an intimate wedding solemnisation. The Club currently has 40 two-storeyed bungalows which are fully air-conditioned, with two twin-sharing rooms. Each bungalow features a kitchen that offers the basic necessities such as a fridge, freezer, microwave oven, electric air pot, induction cooker and cutleries for up to 8 persons. The two shower rooms; one on each floor; are equipped with bath & handtowels, toiletries and hairdryer. The living area is a centre of activity, with large, comfortable sofas and an LCD television equipped with 24 cable TV channels including Star Sports, MTV, Star Movies and HBO. The best part about our bungalows? Access to our myriad of resort facilities! From the bowling centre to the swimming pool, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities to do. If you are planning a BBQ, MoMo Hut can provide the food, so you don t have to fuss over having to get your skewers delivered. Applicants are required to complete the Authorisation form for check-in and out on their behalf. Can I check-in early and check-out later? The Resort would exercise check-in and check-out flexibility only if there is no back-to-back booking. Why can t NSRCC have earlier check-in time and late checkout time just like hotels? The Resort s check-in time at 2 pm is similar to hotels. Unlike hotels, our check-out time is 10 am instead of 12 noon. This is because the resort needs time to prepare the bungalow for the next check-in. Hotels can allocate guests to other rooms The ground floor of our bungalow consists of a spacious living and dining area, perfect for a gathering of family and friends. if a room is not ready for check-in. However, bungalow guests are given the privilege of selecting a specific bungalow unit for their stay. It is not possible to re-allocate a check-in guest to another bungalow if a unit is not ready. I m having an event at the bungalow. Can I get my own caterer? Yes, you can engage your own caterer. If you are getting tables and chairs from your caterer, please note it is limited to 20 chairs and 2 big (10 seater) tables only as there are not much space in between the bungalows. This is to avoid inconveniences to other bungalow occupants. Are pets allowed in the Resort? Pets are strictly NOT allowed in the Resort or the Clubhouse. How many vehicles can I park in the Bungalow compound? Due to limited parking lots in the compound, only 2 registered vehicles are allowed to park within the bungalow compound. First car is complimentary while the second vehicle is charged at $5/day for off-peak period and $10/day for peak period.

23 In&AroundNSRCC resort view 21 Hosting a BBQ? MoMo Hut can provide the food, so you don t have to worry about the delivery. All bedrooms in our bungalows are located on the second storey. You may do 1 night booking only 1 week prior to checkin date for peak period and 2 weeks prior to check-in for off-peak period subject to availability. You may call for assistance. The dining area provide an intimate space for conversations over food and drinks. Can the Resort allow more than these 2 vehicles to park inside? Depending on the occupancy, the Resort may exercise flexibility to allow more than 2 vehicles. Charges will still apply respectively. Where can my guests park their vehicles?
