2 Message from the President By Clay Meininger, TCC President & COO It s hard to believe that a year has passed already; and what a year it has been for The Topeka Country Club! I am coming up on my second year here at TCC, I want to thank all of our members and team for making my time here so enjoyable and fun! This past year, 55 new members joined our Club- an awesome recruiting achievement! And we have you, our members, to thank for introducing your family, colleagues and friends for your help in furthering our membership developments. Our team here at the Club works hard to provide the highest quality of service and amenities to our membership. TCC took pride in rolling out its new website this past year. It has added another dimension to recruiting and has made new tools available for our K members, such as an online membership directory, billing features and clubwide events calendar. Adding items such as the Outdoor Terrace with Fire Pits, ACH Withdrawal, Purchases to be made by Credit Card and Zumba Classes were just a few of the amenities we began offering to our membership in the past year. For 2014, we have planned some new and exciting events we hope will generate excitement for all of you! We are very excited about the New Year and the possibilities 2014 brings for continued growth of your Club. As you gather with your families this holiday season, I extend to you our wishes for a safe, happy and joyous celebration. Please know that on behalf of myself and the Executive team, we appreciate each and every one of you and everything you contribute to making TCC the amazing Club it is. Happy New Year! Message from the Chef By Marc Wilson, Executive Chef New Members We would like to welcome the following new members to the Club! Avery Munns Junior Tennis Welcome to the New Year from your culinary team!! We are really excited about 2014 for your team will be offering many fun and exciting changes over the coming year. Please look for more health conscious items featuring carrots, squash and figs. We are really looking to source local produce as well as meats from Kansas; to keep with the sustainability of Kansas. Also we are intently looking at recipe development to reduce the saturated fats and sodium amounts on the menu. This will afford all of us to be health conscious without sacrificing flavor. Also we ll be offering small plates to aid in portion control. Come visit us in the Grille Room and try out our new winter selections Your 2014 Culinary Team menu, beginning on Tuesday, January 7. Some of the new menu items include, Pan-seared Duck Breast, T-Bone Steak service for two, Spinach Spanakopita and much more! We enjoy offering new items and hearing your feedback, so please let us know your comments! The management team will be looking for many avenues to promoting the restaurant so all suggestions are welcomed. Please let us know what you would like to see in the restaurant or what you would like to see on the upcoming monthly features. This year we are striving for quality products prepared with balance of diet and flavor. Please join me on Wednesday, January 22 for a Cooking Class on Low Fat Cooking. I look forward each month to introducing our members to tips, recipes and more in our Cooking Classes! If you haven t attended a cooking class, please make it a goal of yours to attend this year- we would love for you to come! Did you know Kansas City, Missouri was named the 2nd Tastiest Tailgate City according to McCormick Grillmates as among the 32 cities with NFL teams! TO P E A C.C.

Women s Golf Association By Cindy Cooper, TCCWGA Chairperson Many thanks to Cathy McCoy for organizing our Annual Holiday Luncheon. What a great way to get the season started. Sally Zellers, Director for NET Reach, was the guest speaker. Her program was about the poverty and poor living conditions in the HiCrest Neighborhood and how NET Reach plans to offer the families help and hope. Her presentation was quite an eye opener. Our Golf Calendar is set for 2014 with many fun events and tournament starting April 1. We welcome any lady golfers to join us on Tuesday mornings for 18 holes and lunch. Or, if you are only wanting to play 9 and have lunch with the group we can work that out too. The Nine and Dine group plays on Tuesday evenings with dinner following play. Ann O Bryan and Julie Hejtmanek are in charge of Tuesday evening events. Have a Happy New Year! Cathy McCoy, Jan Wilson, and Pam Ferrell enjoying the Holiday Luncheon

5 Tennis News By Junior Brown, Director of Tennis Well, here we go. I am closing in on finishing up my 1st year at Topeka Country Club as your Director of Tennis and I just want to give a very big Thank You to not only the members but also the staff here at TCC. You could not have made this transition any easier than it has been. I am looking forward to many more years as your Director of Tennis and more importantly a part of the Topeka Country Club family. Another year has past us by but we look to the future with much excitement and anticipation. Our motto is Fun, Fitness and Knowledge and with every lesson and event that takes place we are dedicated to making sure that is exactly what you take with you as well as lasting memories. January is also historically a time to set your New Year s resolutions so because of that I have come up with a challenge for our tennis players of all levels which I hope will help both your Mental and Physical games. It s Time to learn a new Trick! I know what you re saying; I can hear it now I can do it all! Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just humor me and suppose for a moment if you will that there actually is something that you may be able to do just a wee bit better. Choose something and commit to mastering it over the next several months. Think of the 5 Dimensions Height, Direction, Depth, Spin and Speed. If you were to add any of these to any one shot in your game, how much better would you be? Learning a new shot or technique will not only make you a better player but it will also inject some excitement into your tennis. It s a great feeling to work hard on a new technique and then use it to win a match. Ultimately it is what makes the game more fun. Don t worry so much in what the scoreboard says. Enjoy the process. Enjoy the exercise, the fun and the knowledge you are learning to become a better player. Have a great year, play lots of tennis and I will see you on the courts! FREE FOR ALL Join us Saturday, January 11th for the FREE FOR ALL. This event is open to all members and is FREE. We will be doing clinics for Adults and Kids of all ages and abilities. AUSSIE OPEN DOUBLES TENNIS MIXER January 17th is your chance to pair up & play some mixed doubles with or without your spouse. Following play we will watch some Aussie Open action on the Big Screen in the Centre Court Lounge and enjoy great food, friends and drinks. Check in & warm up at 6pm. KIDS NIGHT OUT Hey kids, join us January 24th for games, activities, tons of FUN & food. Check in is at 6:30pm, pick up at 10pm. $25 per child. Children must be 5 years or older. Bring a friend. Sign up now! News By Leo Pellant, Greens Superintendent With a new year upon us, the golf course staff will start preparing the golf course for the upcoming golf season. Some of the projects this winter include: Roundup application to all warm season turf: This application is made to all tees and fairways and some bunker edges and is needed to control cool season weeds such as annual bluegrass that germinates and starts to grow in the zoysia during the cool fall and winter months. This application is made while the zoysia turf is completely dormant and unaffected by the herbicide. Trimming trees: Low hanging limbs are being removed from trees resulting in several benefits such as increased turfgrass vigor under the tree canopy as well as increased irrigation efficiency. Removal of these low limbs also provide a safer environment for the golfer as well as the maintenance staff. Diseased and broken limbs are also removed from the trees during the trimming process resulting in an improved appearance for the tree as well as better health for the tree. Equipment maintenance: The maintenance staff inspects all mowing equipment and makes the necessary repairs required. After inspection all units are sharpened for the upcoming mowing season. Shop work: Each winter all benches, ball washers, trash cans and tee blocks are refinished. Traffic posts are also refinished and ropes replaced where needed. Greenhouse: Bedding plants are seeded and transplanted to provide fresh plant material needed for the spring planting season. Amaryllis bulbs are forced into bloom for display in the clubhouse during the winter months. Drainage: Drain lines emerging from the practice bunkers at the driving range will be connected to an existing drain line running along #3 fairway which should help eliminate water from these bunkers standing on the soil surface. Railroad Ties: In the past railroad ties were used for steps and retaining walls on some of our tees. These steps and retaining walls are now in a state of disrepair after being in place for several years. These ties will be removed and the areas returned to a more natural look with the slopes re-graded and replaced with sod. The golf course staff looks forward to seeing you on the golf course this spring. You are welcome to stop by the shop any time you have a question or concern about your golf course or if you just want to stop in and look around the shop or greenhouse.
