Minutes - Delegate Meeting Friday 4 th August MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT Judy Shelton, BDLGA President Judy tabled the Management Committee Report: We had the AGM and Delegate s meeting on Friday 10 th March this year. We didn t take long for the management committee to be busy once again, with the final of the Junior Pennants held on Sunday 12 th March at Redland Bay. We had 6 teams compete this season with 2 teams being composite. If we hear from clubs that they haven t got enough juniors to form a pennant team, we do join these juniors up to become composite teams. This year Pacific juniors won the pennant shield, with Redland Bay Juniors coming second. Thank you to all junior co-ordinators at clubs, juniors parents where some of them acted as caddies, and to the spectators that came along to watch the girls. Also thank you to our B&D Junior Co-ordinator, who did a great job coordinating all the juniors and clubs to hold this event. Our first tournament for the year was held at McLeod Golf Club on 24 th March. We had 59 teams from 15.clubs contesting the District Foursomes. This tournament was also the start of our Race to Hua Hin competition. After some minor changes after that day, it was decided to still hold the final tournament at Oxley Golf Club on 24 th November for 120 players. Thailand Golf Tours have given the Brisbane and District a Thailand holiday plus air fare as a raffle to be drawn at the conclusion of the event on 24 th November. To be in this raffle draw, all the Brisbane and District players have to do is enter our B&D tournaments. The more tournaments you enter, the more chances you have to win this marvellous raffle. To be one of the 120 players who get to play at Oxley in November, again, the more tournaments you enter and receive points the better chance you will be one of the 120 players. I must thank Thailand Golf Tours for this marvellous prize to be raffled. So far our point system registers 243 players have played in one or more of our B&D tournaments. We have 99 players on 2 points or better, with the rest on 1 point for entering a tournament. There are 2 ladies on 15 points one from Keperra and the other one from Wynnum. One on 9 points, 5 on 8 points, 10 on 7 points and it goes on. Thanks to Lila Carson for being our book keeper, keeping all these records. Little did we know that 3 days after the Foursomes, flooding would occur around south east Queensland. Again we had courses flooded and badly damaged from flood waters. We were to host the Australian Lady Professional Coaching Clinic at Oxley on 27 th March, but this had to be postponed due to the flooding. We did hold the Junior Championships at Virginia Golf Club on Wednesday 5 th April in conjunction with Junior Golf Qld. This year was the last time we held the championships in conjunction with Junior Golf Qld. and as from next year we are the solo organiser of this event. We had 26 players on this day, very disappointing numbers. Hopefully with a new date organised and more contact with the juniors when they are playing their pennants we can increase the numbers. Our Closed Junior Champion is Zoe Maxwell from Virginia with a fine 72 gross on the day. On this day our Junior Jug team was announced, to travel to Cairns in July. I must thank all clubs that worked hard to have their courses ready for the start of our pennant season. We commenced these on Friday 28 th April with Divisions 1 to 4-46 teams and Sunday 30 th with 3 weekend divisions. Without the hard work put in by all club members, club staff and volunteers our pennant season would have been disrupted. I must thank the clubs that offered their own courses to the ladies who couldn t play at their flooded courses for a few weeks. I am sure these ladies appreciated the offer. Some of the Page 2

Minutes - Delegate Meeting Friday 4 th August 2017 management committee were players or caddies in these pennant games, and I travelled around to the clubs watching some games. My biggest thanks goes to our pennant co-ordinator, Deborah Marsland, who managed all these disruptions calmly and wisely managed the changes that had to be done. Also to Lila Carson who kept all the figures for all pennant games, who had played and what handicaps were played during the season. On Monday 29 th May we held our Divisional Challenge and Champion of Champions tournament at Brisbane Golf Club. We had 123 players from 19 Clubs, with only 12 Club Champions competing. This was disappointing. This tournament is our biggest with 7 Perpetual trophies with 3 handicapped divisions, plus Veterans and Senior Vets divisions. I was getting nervous about 10 days before this tournament that the numbers were down, but on the closing date 15 May I was attending the AGM of Golf Qld. and I had to turn off my mobile phone and ipad, as they were ringing non-stop with lastminute entries. At our Divisional Challenge Tournament we had 8 players attend from Bulimba Golf Club. These ladies are from the newest club to become affiliated in the Brisbane and District area. We eventually held the postponed Coaching Clinic, this time on 8 th June. 60 players spent the day having excellent tuition from 6 lady professionals. I only heard praise and complements about these ladies, that it was a great day and can we have another one next year. Hopefully this will happen. We were able to gain a sponsor for this day, Tony Hollands Funerals, who contributed to this day so our players could pay a cheaper amount. Pennant divisions 1 to 4 finished their season by Friday 9 th June and weekend by 18 th June. The winning clubs were: Div. 1 Indooroopilly Weekend 1 Oxley Div. 2 Wantima Weekend 2 Wantima Div. 3 Royal Qld. Weekend 3 Wynnum Div. 4 Gailes Congratulations to all the winning clubs. All finals were attended by management committee members who presented the pennant flags to the winning clubs. No sooner did the 4 divisions finish their season, and Divisions 5 to 8 commenced the following week. We did have some matters to overcome before the starting date, as 2 clubs pulled out of their divisions. The pennant co-ordinator tried to combine divisions 7 and 8 and make their season longer, but comments that we received from clubs, they didn t like this, as their players had set their dates for organised holidays and other commitments, so we had to stick to the original divisions. We had 24 teams competing in Divisions 5 to 8. These divisions finished on Friday 28 th July. Winning clubs were: Div. 5 Div. 6 Div. 7 Div. 8 Royal Qld. Brisbane Nudgee Wynnum On Saturday 1 st July the Junior Jug team travelled up to Cairns. Our team for this year was: ZOE MAXWELL VIRGINIA BROOKE BECK WYNNUM KATERINA MARSHALL NUDGEE Page 3

Minutes - Delegate Meeting Friday 4 th August 2017 CAPTAIN CECILY TURNBULL and myself as the manager We played at Half Moon Bay from Sunday to Wednesday lunchtime. As soon as we got to the course on the Sunday afternoon, the warning was BEWARE OF THE CROCODILES THAT LIVE ON THE COURSE. I have never seen a golf course with so many out of bounds posts around the course. This was an incentive for the players to hit straight. The B&D team fell 1 ½ points short to win this year. The winning District was Sunshine Coast Burnett & District, B&D second, with Far North Qld. coming 3 rd. Our girls played well and were a credit to the district, and their clubs. I had the pleasure to announce the 2018 Junior Jug Tournament will be played at Virginia Golf Club, hosted by the Brisbane and District. Once I was back home from Cairns, I got stuck into organising the 4BBB Challenge tournament to be played at Windaroo Golf Club. We had 45 teams (90 players) from 15 clubs. This was a shotgun start at 8.30am. After this year s AGM we started organising the Meg Nunn Salver to be played at McLeod Golf Club between Monday 10 th to Friday 15 th September. We get to host this event and the Junior Jug every 7 years. It is a very prestigious tournament to host and I m extremely pleased that Meg Nunn s daughter, Anne Brown will be at McLeod during this week, watching the event that was close to her mother s heart. We held the first trial game for the Meg Nunn Team at McLeod in June and it bucketed down!! I think the nominees were having bets amongst them, whether or not I had a heart and I would stop them playing after 9 holes - - I did after 8 holes, and we all went into the club house for coffee. After the second trial game at Mcleod Golf Club we announced the Meg Nunn Salver team to play in September. The team is: LYNDAL PLANT INDOOROOPILLY and MCLEOD MARIE PHILLIPS INDOOROOPILLY COLLETTE BYRNE MCLEOD JACKIE ZUIDAM WYNNUM MEGAN BELL RIVERLAKES MARGARET ANDERSON NUDGEE (Non-playing) CAPTAIN CHERYL STERNBERG It is the job now for these ladies to acquaint themselves with the McLeod course, and be ready to play well and hopefully win the Salver. Without the sponsorship from our sponsors we couldn t keep the tournament entry fees as low as we do. Thanks must go to: Vanity Fairways Tony Hollands Funerals Drummond Golf Woolloongabba Altitude Financial Services Thailand Golf Tours Jane Holt and her family Now I am working on the Interclub Team Event to be played at Pacific Golf Club on Monday 28 th August. The teams will be playing for the Lady Holt Perpetual Trophy, sponsored by Jane Holt and her family. To win this trophy, the team members must be from the same club. This year we are trialling 2 scores to count on each hole competition. Hopefully this will speed up play. I would encourage clubs Page 4

Minutes - Delegate Meeting Friday 4 th August 2017 to enter this event, and have the pleasure of displaying the Lady Holt trophy at their club for the year. Also to get your entries in quickly, as once the field limit is reached, the tournament will be closed. At this Delegate s meeting, you have the chance to suggest any changes that you might like to recommend for the 2018 pennant season. Anything suggested today, will be discussed at our next Management Committee meeting. When visiting pennant games this year, I spoke to many players and they suggested ideas that could help the Pennant competition. My reply to these players was HAVE YOU TOLD YOUR CLUB DELEGATE FOR HER TO RAISE THE ISSUE AT THE NEXT DELEGATE S MEETING? I hope before you came today, the players gave you their suggestions to raise on how we can make our pennant season successful. Our Management Committee lead a busy life, all as volunteers, but I know we wouldn t be on this committee if we didn t love the game of golf. Thank you ladies. 7. COUNCIL MEETING FEEDBACK Judy Shelton At the recent Golf Qld Council Meeting, David Brett was re-elected as the CEO. In progress - a junior partnership in conjunction with the Brisbane Men s Districts. At the Council Meeting Judy gave a presentation on what the BDLGA do; some members in the meeting were surprised at how much the BDLGA actually do for the ladies of the Brisbane District. 8. GOLF QUEENSLAND REPORT Judy Logan, Board Member, Golf Queensland Judy welcomed everyone to the Delegate meeting and offered her assistance to any clubs. The Golf Qld Foundation was set up 18 months ago to help junior and ladies golf and club support development. The Foundation has been a bit slow to get off the ground due to funding; affiliation fees don t cover the running of the foundation. Some clubs have added a couple of dollars onto membership fees which have been donated to the foundation. Golf Qld Brooch and Bowl this is a way that ladies golf can put something into golf and get something back. Nomination forms are in the GQ Women s Handbook. There has been discussion about a Queensland Ladies Open, all that is needed is a sponsor. 9. PENNANT FORUM Please refer to the attached discussion items. Judy thanked the clubs and players for good sportsmanship during the 2017 Pennant Season and made mention to speed up play in particular for caddies and players measuring shots. 10. General Business Rumour is the BDLGA amalgamating with the BDGA? There has been no discussion towards such a goal. There are three men s districts compared to our one ladies district. The comments heard could be related to the district men and ladies working together to get the junior development program underway. 11. MIND Presentation Sak Lee, PGA Professional (11.30am) Sak gave some tips to the Delegates on positive thoughts helping to play good golf: swing the club; don t try to hit the ball ; believe in your swing; don t over think. Golf is a lifestyle like driving a car! MEETING CLOSED at 12.10pm. Next Meeting: 17 th November 2017, Venue TBA Page 5

PENNANT TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION DELEGATE MEETING, 4 th August 2017, McLeod Country Golf Club Name, Club Topic for discussion Comments & Responses (BDLGA in italics) Jenna Lyons RQ (absent) We have discussed the format of the 2017 Pennant season not only with each other, but also with our players, caddies and captains. In that regard, we would like to submit the following points for discussion: 1. We wish to thank Deborah Marsland, Pennant Chair, and the entire BDLGA for organising and conducting the 2017 season. Our players enjoyed the season and the opportunity afforded by the BDLGA to play in the pennant competition. 2. The 7-week season, however, was too long and keeping a competitive team together for that l ength of time was nearly impossible. 3. In an effort to maximise the opportunity for our ladies to play pennants, we possible over-reached our capabilities by committing to 4 pennant teams with 7 teams in Div 1, 8 teams in Div 3, 8 teams in Div 4 and 8 teams in Div Is it possible to reduce the number of teams playing (and therefore the length of the season) by increasing the number of players in a team from 5 to 7? This would add stability to the team and reduce the incidence of players having to move from one division to a higher division when a player from a higher division is absent. Often, our players felt their own team was compromised when team members had to play up in a higher division. 5. Will promotion and relegation be implemented for the 2018 pennant season? 1 Collette Byrne, McLeod: 7 weeks is not that long but there were too many teams. Ann Fell, Brisbane: only 5 players in their team but took 8 players in the Div 6 team to go for the 7 week length of time. Daphne Hine, Wynnum: Team in Div 5 took 10 players to fulfil the 7 week period. Handicaps impacted on the players that could be used. The old Silver division worked better for Wynnum. Every club is different; every club has different requirements and handicap ranges. Michelle Stanley, Redland Bay: Decide what pennants is all about is it about letting lots of ladies play, or is it an honour to be able to play pennants. Collette Byrne, McLeod: Agreed with Michele it is an honour to play pennants. To play in a pennant team is something for ladies to strive for. Look at men s pennants as an example for changes. Ann Fell, Brisbane: There is a distinction about a problem caused by more players in a team compared to more teams in the division making the season longer. Margaret Bennett: Stroke, 4ball and foursomes as the men play South East Queensland men s district. Had 7 in a team previously which worked why change it. Agrees it is an honour to get handicap down to make a pennant team. Sandgate: Would adding a division reduce the length of the season? Promotion and relegation was not done because we had so many teams nominate to play divisions needed to be organised to accommodate the number of teams nominated. Cheree Brown, Gailes : We had a similar problem this year, the cut off with the handicaps was the biggest impact. Redland Bay "Go back to the 2016 system we had for the pennants. A lot of matches were close this year.

PENNANT TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION DELEGATE MEETING, 4 th August 2017, McLeod Country Golf Club Daphne Hine (Wynnum) It worked so well compared to this year and the matches were close in 2016 not so this year". Order of play Handicap for Div 5 Where a game is cancelled all teams get 1 point, not good for hosting club 7 games to long I suggest the ideal div should have no more then 5 teams, no home games and season finished in 5 weeks Pennant Regulations; re downpour at Wynnum match was cancelled but course was not closed Thank You Daphne Hine Wynnum Order of play Ann Fell, Brisbane: Nobody complained about the order of play; play was marshalled and players were happy with that. The pace of play is set by the first players, if that s no. 5 that is too slow. Preference is sending No. 1s to go first. Cheryl mentioned that the change to the order of play was a delegate suggestion, not the committee. Further discussion required. Carol Thomas, Redland Bay: With Div 6 and number 5 going off first, this is intimidating with the other players around. Handicap for Div : Lower in 2016 so the players from 2016 couldn t play in Div 5 in 2017 (Wynnum). Joanne Lansbury, Oxley: People missing out an issue that needs to be reduced (Weekend). Collette Byrne, McLeod: It s all too complicated too many teams, too many handicap divisions. Can we simplify it some way. When teams went from 7 to 5, McLeod wanted to put more teams in to allow players a game. Lyla problem from figures show that the clubs who entered teams everywhere is what has introduced the bigger divisions. Clubs should only submit one team. Game cancelled all teams given 1 point, and cancelled match the points given are in the regulations. For the safety of the players on that particular day the match was cancelled. The decision was made in conjunction with all team captains and club staff (Cecily) for the safety of players. Terri Williams (Indooroopilly) to reiterate etiquette to sit with opponents; perhaps join Div 7 & 8 and then zone them geographicially; where clubs can have a 2 tee start so that teams come in around the same Seating will stay in regulations. Zoning has been suggested previously but has not been received well in the past. This is done for weekend pennants. 2

PENNANT TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION DELEGATE MEETING, 4 th August 2017, McLeod Country Golf Club time; Terri Williams, Indooroopilly: Maybe the zoning would help to reduce the length of the season. We should get as many ladies involved in golf. Indooroopilly liked the Diviions 1 4 off the stick. Suzie Gordon (Nudgee) 1. Minimum and Maximum handicap range to be listed on the top of every draw? 2. List the Slope Rating on the draw beside each host club? 3. The possibility of Division 1 Pennant being played on a Sunday instead of Friday to accommodate working ladies and students? 4. Shots given to players in all divisions? Feedback that in Div 5 6 have to give too many shots. This could be tightened affect availability of players? Overlap in Div 4 was an issue Ann Fell, Brisbane: Suggestion for off the stick range; could we try the concept of one big team off the stick; this might allow 5,6,7,8 for players on their way up. Sandgate: Smaller clubs wouldn t be able to do that. Margaret Bennett, Redcliffe: found it difficult in Div 2 (prev 3) but because they had one lady who had a GA of 8 missed out. Div ? The above suggestion opens up the opportunity to load the team. Cheree Brown, Gailes: Limit the amount of single markers that can be in the team; teams with more single markers could share those single marker spots in the team. 2 Tee Start: where we are given a 2 tee start we will use it, this is not always the case. What is the benefit of everyone getting in at the same time? Shortens the day; good for final match. No. 1 - We can do that. No. 2 for some clubs this will be different. No point in putting this on the draws. No. 3 Div 1 on Sunday: This is why we have weekend pennants. Won t happen. No. 4 shots to players in all divisions. No. The teams that are doing this complain about the number of shots given. 3

PENNANT TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION DELEGATE MEETING, 4 th August 2017, McLeod Country Golf Club Redcliffe: Div 5 & 6 are on a handicap, this is what it is for. If there is a 10 shot difference, that is because it is needed. Deborah reported: Feedback with regards to the length of the pennant season it was a long season mainly because Div 1 4 started in April, with 5 8 in June. This was trialled due to feedback from other clubs that for Divisions 5 8 there were not enough caddies to assist the higher markers. The spread of the season was easier to schedule due to less demand on the course availability. The long season did impact on the committee responsibilities for the season. It appears from current feedback that the preference is to keep the season shorter. The committee will work with feedback received, statistics collated and come up with a solution for Although our aim is to allow more ladies to play pennants, we need to give consideration to all feedback. From the floor: Dianne Baxter, Virginia. From Barb Thomas pennant result sheet be modified to include the daily handicap as well as the GA. Not a lot of room Vicki to check it out. Cheryl There are two schools of thoughts: it is an honour to play; and as many ladies playing golf as possible. How do we work with those two options? If we restrict it and only allow one or two teams per division then we are restricting how many ladies can play. Pennants is not the only golf game to be played there are other competitions within clubs. Deborah weekend pennants, we have 1,2,3 and open handicap max GA 34. What is the feeling if we looked at making WE1 the lower markers; WE2 with an overlap and similar for WE3? To make the WE1 team to be the stronger team. Ann Fell, Brisbane: 2 teams in WE pennants, their WE1 team would like to play off the stick Collette Byrne, McLeod: Agreed. Sue, Mt Warren Park: Small club, only a WE team 2017 no players for weekday; would not be able to field a lower handicap team in WE1. Joanne, Oxley: An idea of what the handicap range would be for the WE1? WE1 2.4 highest 20. Joanne reported that Oxley only fielded one team because they thought that s what BDLGA said they had to do this wasn t the case. The requirement was for two teams, two Sundays were required. Oxley made the decision to have just the one team. Gayle Kemp, Ashgrove: As a small club, trouble fielding a WE team. The WE handicap maximum 34 can this be reduced to 30 or 32. Had to give too many shots. BDLGA: How many would be happy if we went back to 2016 regulations? One club. Deborah advised all feedback will be taken into consideration. We have had feedback from clubs about course condition and refusal to play on those courses again. Everyone is reminded that not all clubs are as good as the other with strong female membership or voice at the club. The BDLGA represents all clubs in the area; when we play pennants at courses we are there as the guests of the club. To hear bad comments about the courses is not acceptable and not in the spirit we want to foster for pennants and the Brisbane District Ladies. We should be supporting all of the players and the courses who allow us to play. 4
