Handicapping * A player s handicap index is an important tool that PCC uses as follows: WGAP Team Matches A player s handicap index on November 1st is used to determine their position on the team roster the following spring. Women s Competitive Events The player s handicap index is used to determine within which flight a player falls as per various PCC and WGAP events. A flight 0 to 15.9 B flight 16.0 to 21.9 C flight 22.0 to 26.9 D flight 27.0 to 36.0 The handicap index is used to level the playing field within tournaments that include players of differing abilities. Players are expected to post their 9 or 18-hole scores every time they play from April 1st through October 31 st and during the off-season at golf courses in warm weather climates. Scores should be adjusted for equitable stroke control when posted as follows: Course Handicap Maximum Number 9 Double Bogey Scores may be posted in one of the following ways: 1) In the Wissahickon pro shop or Militia Hill clubhouse 2) On the GHIN website 3) On a player s mobile phone using the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) app Reminders: New in 2016 and continued in 2017 Posting scores hole-by-hole at PCC is not required. Players may anonymously trigger a peer review. All scores for plaque events should be posted as tournament scores. *Please refer to the Philadelphia Cricket Club and USGA websites for more detailed information on basic handicapping parameters, tournament scores, peer review and penalties. 4

Ringers (Plaque Event Gross and Net) Ringers is a season-long competition that combines scores on both the Wissahickon and Militia Hill courses. You must have a score on every hole on each course by the end of the Ringers season to be included in the competition. The GHIN handicap on that date will be used to determine the contestant flights (see below) and net scores. Ringers opens on April 1 and closes on September 30. A ringer is defined as your best score on each hole throughout the season. You may post a ringer if it occurs during a 9- or 18-hole round. Gross winners will be determined in 4 classes per handicap index: A flight 0 to 15.9 B flight 16.0 to 21.9 C flight 22.0 to 26.9 D flight 27.0 to 36.0 Ringers cards are located in the women s lounge at Wissahickon and in the Militia Hill Clubhouse. In the spirit of the competition posting of ringers within 2 weeks is encouraged. Players should adjust their Ringers cards each time they improve their score. The PCC staff will transfer the ringers information from the cards to a spreadsheet, which will be updated monthly and posted in the women s lounge. Players are required to post all rounds. A ringer may only come from a posted score. Entry Fee None First place for gross winners in each of the four flights and the overall net winner. 5

Women s Opening Day Women s Opening Day is a wonderful opportunity for our members to renew acquaintances, meet new players, and to find out about all the events the women s golf committee and PCC professional staff have planned for the season. It is also a good time to meet the members of the women s golf committee, as well as some of the professional staff. Women of all abilities are highly encouraged to attend this kick off event. Players are invited to play as many holes as possible at Wissahickon before gathering for dinner in the Clubhouse at 6:30. Tee times may be booked one month in advance. There is no formal competition or prizes for this event. Expected Participation >40 Fee $30++ pp 6

WGAP Team Matches (#5) and Eligibility Requirements WGAP team matches take place over 2 ½ weeks in late April and early May. They are on Tuesdays (3) and Fridays (2). The format is match play with no adjustments for handicaps. Qualification requires signing up as a WGAP member and payment of their $85 fee a handicap of 36 or better; and a minimum of 10 posted scores in the preceding 12 months ( PCC has five teams consisting of 7 members per team. Position on the teams is organized in order of handicap index on November 1 from the preceding year. According to WGAP rules, the lineups are flexible by up to 1.5 handicap index. Beyond that the following are considered: number of rounds a player posted in the preceding year, availability for the match days, record for tournament play during the previous season, and previous match play experience. When a player on the roster is not available to play on a given day those from below move up one spot. It is possible to play on two different teams within a season. Each PCC team has a designated captain who is responsible for coordinating the matches with both their own and their opposing team. WGAP organizes team matches, 2 or 3 of which are played at home and the remainder on the opponents course. While most team matches begin at 9 AM, PCC s matches are played at Wissahickon beginning at 8:30 AM as a modified shotgun from the IV tees. Play is in twosomes, consisting of the PCC player and her opponent, plus a shared caddie (in the case of PCC). Carts are only allowed at Wissahickon for those with medical excuses or who are 65 years old. Caddies are not available at some opponents courses. PCC players are charged a fee for lunches following the matches regardless of whether they eat. The 2017 team uniform is the same as in prior years and consists of black bottoms (i.e., pants, shorts, skirt, rain pants), a white or red shirt, a red 1/4-zip long sleeve top, a black vest, black hat or white bucket hat with black trim, and a black outer layer if needed. Other articles of clothing similar in color/style may be substituted. Those participating in team matches receive Swope Cup points as follows: 1 point for being on the team roster or being a hostess 1 additional point for each win 3 additional points for 3-4 matches won or 10 additional points for 5 matches won PCC Team Match Fee $30 pp covers registration for the matches and participation in practices/clinics. It also helps defray some of the expenses for the team match party that takes place at the end of the team match season. 7

Women s Better Ball (BB) of Partners (Plaque Event) and Eligibility Requirements The women s better ball (BB) of partners is a season-long competition that takes place over approximately 5 months. The deadline for the first round will be approximately 6 weeks from the registration deadline with subsequent deadlines at approximate 4-week intervals. Teams are made up of two PCC female players. Play is from the IV tees at Militia Hill or Wissahickon as decided on by the two teams. If necessary an alternative course can be used. Players must have a minimum of 10 posted scores in the preceding 12 months in order to participate, unless otherwise specifically approved. The combined handicap of partners must be at least 20 and no more than 50. If a team has a total handicap that exceeds 50 when it signs up for the tournament or on the date of a match, the team can play in the tournament. But, for each match, each team member's handicap will be reduced by 50% of the excess of their combined handicaps over the maximum of 50.* The maximum handicap of any individual player is 36. Scores should be posted as tournament scores. Players are responsible for making their own matches. Once a match date is determined, all players are required to confirm that understanding by sending an to the Director of Golf. Once communicated to the DOG, the agreed upon date becomes the deadline date and a cancellation will result in a forfeit unless both teams agree to change the date to a date within the specified deadline for the round. If such a situation arises, in the spirit of the game the Committee encourages all parties to be as cooperative as possible in trying to reschedule the match to avoid a forfeit. If players cannot agree on a time to play, teams will be assigned a tee time at either Wissahickon or Militia Hill on the deadline date of the round being played. Course and tee time assignments will be based on availability. Failure to be available for the match on the posted date and time will result in disqualification. Under no circumstances will a deadline date be extended unless the golf course(s) are closed due to weather. Expected field players, teams Entry Fee $10 pp First and second place awarded at the women s closing event Store credit from entry fees awarded to the top 8 teams *In 2012 the Women s Golf Committee decided not to allow teams that had a total handicap over 50 at the beginning of the season. This system was implemented for just that year. The rule was discussed again in 2013 with the committee deciding to revert to allowing teams to play with combined handicaps over 50 but limiting the total to 50 as described above. 8

Women s Better Ball of Partners Tips The BB championships are guided by match-play deadlines. They are advertised well in advance with no flexibility to extend deadlines. It is ideal for teams to immediately contact their opponents as soon as they know who they are so that the maximum amount of time is available to find common ground on timing to play. The BB Championships are open to primary, associate, and golf in waiting members. Matches that include two primary members on the same team may be played according to primary member tee time guidelines on weekends, even if the match is against a team with associate and/or GIW members on it. All other matches must be played in accordance with normal tee time guidelines. Scorecards for all matches should be secured through the golf shop (PGA Professional Chris Cerven). Please remember to check the scorecards for accuracy. It is the responsibility of the player to know the current handicaps with which the match is being played. All match play rounds must be posted as tournament scores and the responsibility to post the scores lies with the players in the match. If a player does not complete play of a hole, the score that would most likely have been made is to be recorded. If a match ends prior to finishing 18 holes, par plus your allotted strokes should be recorded on the uncompleted holes. Pace of play for the matches is limited to 4 hours and 30 minutes by the Pace of Play Policy. If a match is running slow but is finished after fewer than 18 holes are completed, the finish time will be extrapolated based on the average time played per hole finished and that will determine the overall pace of play. Please keep in mind that the guidelines exist for the benefit of everyone. While the matches are highly competitive, it's incumbent upon each participant to consider the experience of those golfers behind them when competing in the matches. Added priority is not available to schedule the BB matches - all should be booked via the normal tee time guidelines (7 days for primary/associate; 5 days for GIW). As long as a primary/associate member is part of the match (even against at GIW member), the 7-day tee time window may be used. Please be timely in reporting the results of a match. The staff member responsible for the BB Championships is Chris Cerven (ccerven@philacricket.com). All scorecards should be secured from Chris or another member of the professional staff on his behalf. 9

Swope Cup (Plaque Event)* The Swope Cup is a season-long competition of PCC female members using a point system based on results of WGAP matches and major competitive events for women as outlined in the Swope cup point system. The person with the highest number of Swope points receives the award at Women s closing event. History The Swope Cup was created to honor the memory of Elaine Swope, a life-long member at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, whose positive influence on the women s golf program is unmatched. She began playing golf at an early age with her father, won inter-city and WGAP tournaments, participated in WGAP Team events for over 50 years, as well as winning junior and mixed events. Elaine was both the Junior and Women s Club Champion. She was a highly motivated and regarded golfer, as evidenced by her competitive successes. And most importantly, Elaine loved the game of golf, competing with grace and true sportsmanship. The original point system developed in 2010 for the Swope Cup included points for those who not only won but also those who participated in the many PCC women s events offered as well. In 2012, the Women s Golf Committee discussed the limitations of this system as not being a true representation of Elaine Swope and her approach to golf. The committee moved to the current system, one more in line with Elaine Swope s ideals of competition and winning. The Swope Cup award is presented each year to the golfer that embodies these qualities and who has achieved competitive success throughout the golf season.
